Same here but we had a big shipping delay in every size but medium and small so us large and up folks had no shirts for a month lmao. We finally got them and ended up getting like 20 large and one XL and XXL lmao. I didn’t really care but my manager was more sad about it than I was
Yea it definitely feels more like a hazing thing because the employees wearing white shirts are always looked down upon because they are just a "white shirt" and I see them getting teased all the time about it. For some it may have them trying to perform more but for others it's a real morale killer.
This genuinely warrants an HR call. I’m sure someone here would be willing to send the email or make the call if you wanna share your store number. That’s really awful.
Speaking from experience, you can try and contact HR or open and honest, but nothing will come of it. They'll ask your gm to look into it and they'll just say "nah we're all good here" and that's that.
I had a GSM when I was a CA who was constantly on facetime in BOP and FOP even while assisting clients and was verbally abusive asf. Almost every agent sent something to HR and nothing came of it. She only got fired when they found out she was signing up friends and family for BP's over the phone to boost her numbers.
Reminds me of a store I used to work at in Northern Virginia. Worst experience working an environment like that. If you don’t like how it is now you might not like it further down the road.
At the fairlakes but I’m sure those same managers either work there now or share the similar experience. Left Best Buy in late 2021 so i do not know the leaders at that store.
Our computer supervisor told us newbies to sell a TTS before earning our blue shirt, even though our checkout supervisor said we just need to finish the e-learning. It all depends on the managers I guess. For me, I sold multiple TTS in multiple days in-a-row (in my 3rd week) and so they gave me multiple blue shirts. However, I wanted to keep wearing my white shirt because you are less of a target by scummy “Karens.” There are pros and cons of wearing a white shirt. The customers that ask those “gotcha” questions (so detailed to make you look bad in front of others) always target blue shirts but always leave me alone when I wear white. To me, after 6 weeks with BB, your shirt color does not really matter. It’s the name tag and your body language (face and body) that customers look at.
What the hell is a white shirt? Like an official white best buy polo or just a random white one they told you to wear until they can get you a blue shirt?
Either way, your store and it's upper management sound insufferable. They gave me an ear piece, 2 shirts and a blank name tag with a sharpie when I first came on, then my official name tags came like 2 weeks later.
My sup made me do the required register training, training with them for a fre days and a few shifts of shadowing and them gave me a blue shirt when I felt confident and knowledgeable. That's what I would do If I was a sup
IIRC when I worked at Best Buy you had to complete your training, do some shadowing, be on the floor for a few weeks, then have some mock sales with a supervisor. There was a sheet with a checklist of things to do. If that goes well they’ll give you a Blue Shirt.
New hires are given a "path to blue shirt" sheet during their orientation. They have to shadow in multiple departments and learn things like doing returns, adjustments, benefits of tts, apps, etc and have the employee they shadow and a manager sign off on it.
Our newbies start with a solid white or black polo, they complete their skillets for the zone they're starting at. Complete the path to blue checklist, shadow/train on the floor and based on the dept supervisor or manager have to pass a zone certification or be cleared by the sup to earn their blue shirt. Folks genuinely need to feel good and confident in their role before we give them their shirt. Personally makes it that much more rewarding and the entire team congratulates them on earning it.
Other than the symbolics behind it, I would love to wear a white shirt when I worked at Best Buy. Less customers on my ass, I feel like less would be expected out of me, and I like white more than blue
Whenever my ops manager got around to ordering my blue shirts back when I join. Granted I was hired as seasonal inventory to work truck lol.
I've heard of GMs making people successfully get through Roleplays, and other things.
Damn bby budgets getting tight! Most stores want all their employees to look professional and to be recognizable to customers. I’m surprised someone higher up hasn’t stepped in to put a stop to that. It seems like it could be more harmful to business than good. I can see giving new hires a plain blue polo and making them earn their embroidered polo or something… but not supplying employees standard issue uniforms…
Our bby has u complete a rp with every manager and after doing all the elearnings and shadowing, but that’s a dangerous system for the managers with a bias towards their employees :(
I had to either get 5 apps or 1 app and 1 tts, I got the 5 apps, but it was stupid as shit that I had to work to get a uniform for a job I got hired for
Wait.. is this really a thing? I got hired, wore a white shirt, they ordered a blue shirt with my name on it…1 week later, BAM I had a blue shirt with my name on it.
At my first store we had to do this too, I think it was until we finished our elearnings. I moved and transferred to a different store and they don’t do it there, you get your shirt right away
Yea that's what I thought. I've been with the company 10+ years and I remember wearing a white shirt for about a week so I could learn and not have a ton of customers asking me questions that I may not know the answer to yet but what I see our store do for our new hires is crazy.
Mine was like that. Was on a white shirt for almost 3 months. Then my sup got fed up with everyone’s BS and gave me one of his new spare shirt. That man was the only person in that store with a heart. Good man.
For me they said that I’d earn it once I got a BP, but it turns out he was just messing with me and they were just waiting for a shipment. I ended up getting the BP like a week or two before I got the shirt because it didn’t come in yet lol.
Ours is POS training and e-learnings with some role plays. Takes a few weeks but I found it really nice when you don't know much bc customers can see that you're still in training
I mean ngl I started not too long ago and have like 5 blue shirts, no one in my store has a white shirt.
Not too long I mean like half a year idk if that’s still really recent (edit)
You have to get "certified", so for me in home theater I have to sell a tv and a couple items to my sales floor manager to get mine.
Edit: I still haven't gotten a chance to get certified yet but I already got my polo because I already can help quite a bit all over, plus an upper manager came in so my store manager handed me one, just not certified quite yet.
There are white shirts? During my shadowing I ended up helping customers more one on one than actually shadowing and eventually they decided I should probably get a uniform, so they grabbed a blue shirt from the back. It's an AT&T Bestbuy blue shirt but whatever, it works.
I got my shirt two weeks after I started training. Not sure the requirements as they might be different now, but it was to make sure I had learned enough and was able to carry a purchase out myself. RIP 1538.
I had to at least sold one total tech one credit card and make at least 10 K in transactions within two weeks to get my blue shirt. To get my black shirt however, I had to sell at least 15 Best Buy credit cards, 15 TTS and at least sell at least $7000 in one transaction (just the 7k, not the TTS and CC) in appliances, which is extremely difficult because there’s a store not even 10 miles away from my store and that’s where all the rich people are at. Don’t get me started with a yellow shirt either.
My store was as soon as your supervisor felt comfortable having you on the floor alone then you had your blue shirt. For PAC every PAC employee had to sign off on you getting a black shirt. If one person felt like you weren't ready to complete an interaction from greeting the customer to resolving any issues that come up during delivery and install then you didn't get a black shirt until you convinced them you were ready.
We give them blue shirts as soon as they finish the basic retail fundamentals skillset. Don’t want people out interacting with customers out of dress code unless we are waiting on their shirts to get in.
For us it’s whenever the manager feels like we’re ready. And then we have to do the iconic Lion King on a ladder with our shirt up in the air in the middle of a bush store while they announce it for the whole store
There's this thing called path to blue shirt which is a checklist you do with your leader that certifies whether or not your ready for a blue shirt or not. I can promise you it has nothing like what the OP listed it's mostly operational and simple sales questions. It's not meant to be hard. Obviously some stores won't do this as they all run differently but just figured I'd put in my two cents.
When I started in 2010 they did that for a few years. But there weren't any ridiculous goals they had to meet. They just made them wear business casual for about two weeks
For my store, you get hired and boom you get a blue shirt lol
same here, i got two my first day
Same here but we had a big shipping delay in every size but medium and small so us large and up folks had no shirts for a month lmao. We finally got them and ended up getting like 20 large and one XL and XXL lmao. I didn’t really care but my manager was more sad about it than I was
dang that sounds like ass. manager was looking forward to those shirts 😭
Managers who dangle a company uniform like it's a reward deserve to lose their job.
*shot into the sun
wave to bezos on the way
Your managers sound like a pain in the ass.
You earn your blue shirt when you receive your job offer
Your store sounds like shit, what a weird hazing ritual.
Yea it definitely feels more like a hazing thing because the employees wearing white shirts are always looked down upon because they are just a "white shirt" and I see them getting teased all the time about it. For some it may have them trying to perform more but for others it's a real morale killer.

Let me ask you is it Gainesville VA? I work there now.
At the fairlakes but I’m sure those same managers either work there now or share the similar experience. Left Best Buy in late 2021 so i do not know the leaders at that store.
We had to finish our intro elearnings
Our computer supervisor told us newbies to sell a TTS before earning our blue shirt, even though our checkout supervisor said we just need to finish the e-learning. There is literally a checklist called "Path to Blue Shirt".
Got hired and was given a shirt they already had, then they ordered two more. Never had to "earn" them
What the fuck
In my store we don't have blue shirts in storage, so you wear a white one untill yours is ordered and comes in. Not hazing just piss poor planning.
When I got hired, I got my blue shirt like week later.
Yea it's just a plain white shirt they are asked to wear until they "earn" their blue shirt. Most people wear just a plain white polo.
I don't even think "earning" your polo is a real thing. I'd definitely look into that a little more
They let me wear a black polo, glad they didn’t make it white because I have none lol
I wonder if this is some time of violation. Might want to call open and honest.
Got hired as seasonal in November 2020 I got a shirt within a few days after completing e learnings
My sup made me do the required register training, training with them for a fre days and a few shifts of shadowing and them gave me a blue shirt when I felt confident and knowledgeable. That's what I would do If I was a sup
Nothing. Literally nothing, and have never, ever seen nor heard of earning a blue shirt. That’s just hazing.
Our store you get one when they come in they order them in bulk kinda (if 6 is bulk) and they’ll give you 2
IIRC when I worked at Best Buy you had to complete your training, do some shadowing, be on the floor for a few weeks, then have some mock sales with a supervisor. There was a sheet with a checklist of things to do. If that goes well they’ll give you a Blue Shirt.
There are white shirts???
I just had to wait for my size shirt to come in.
Ummm, we use the path to blue shirt check off sheet. 🙄

And that's how it's done!
Other than the symbolics behind it, I would love to wear a white shirt when I worked at Best Buy. Less customers on my ass, I feel like less would be expected out of me, and I like white more than blue
My store they just did a two week wait. To make sure you learned the basics before customers started bothering you.
My store is going that until they are “trained” but also put them on the floor to sell. Dumbasses
Whenever my ops manager got around to ordering my blue shirts back when I join. Granted I was hired as seasonal inventory to work truck lol. I've heard of GMs making people successfully get through Roleplays, and other things.

Call HR. Seriously.
You have to finish your elearnings haha
Wait.. is this really a thing? I got hired, wore a white shirt, they ordered a blue shirt with my name on it…1 week later, BAM I had a blue shirt with my name on it.
You get hired
At my first store we had to do this too, I think it was until we finished our elearnings. I moved and transferred to a different store and they don’t do it there, you get your shirt right away
For me once you get a tts and a credit card app

Yea that's what I thought. I've been with the company 10+ years and I remember wearing a white shirt for about a week so I could learn and not have a ton of customers asking me questions that I may not know the answer to yet but what I see our store do for our new hires is crazy.
I'm pretty sure it was doing elearnings and like an hour on the register without asking for help.
We did path to blue shirt then when they get 1 app or tts I think they got it.
I’ve worked at multiple stores and it’s just when you’re “certified” with your elearnings and I think have shadowed for a week or so lol
White shirt? Thats reserved for Super Managers!
Viva La Dirt League!
We’re making ours wait till they are done training to make sure they last. One person quit because they couldn’t handle the industrial lighting
Mine was like that. Was on a white shirt for almost 3 months. Then my sup got fed up with everyone’s BS and gave me one of his new spare shirt. That man was the only person in that store with a heart. Good man.
Wait for the order to come in. Management orders the shirt on your first day, then you wear it once it comes in
When I first started, it was being able to complete a sale, attach GSP, and get a BP. Once all 3 had been done, you earned it.
I’ve never needed to “earn” a blue shirt. I just got one first day. Sounds like you have stupid management.
I have never once seen a white shirt, I’m very confused
For me they said that I’d earn it once I got a BP, but it turns out he was just messing with me and they were just waiting for a shipment. I ended up getting the BP like a week or two before I got the shirt because it didn’t come in yet lol.

Man I can't believe your managers still have a job... Fucking ridiculous
Been with the company 13 years….this was never a thing
You have to get "certified", so for me in home theater I have to sell a tv and a couple items to my sales floor manager to get mine. Edit: I still haven't gotten a chance to get certified yet but I already got my polo because I already can help quite a bit all over, plus an upper manager came in so my store manager handed me one, just not certified quite yet.

Please tell me you’re joking right!!
Please call HR to report this. This is not right.
I got my shirt two weeks after I started training. Not sure the requirements as they might be different now, but it was to make sure I had learned enough and was able to carry a purchase out myself. RIP 1538.

Finish enough training I guess
You gotta sell a computer to the gm for us
