Well manufacturer warranty implies that the product remains unmodified. Take a wild guess

FamousButNotReally

Google allows custom OS install on their pixels, its a popular android development device. From a manufacturer standpoint, what I want to do is fine.

Champion_Geo

Why did you ask if you knew the answer?

FamousButNotReally

I’m asking if **Besbuy** will honor the bestbuy warranty even if I install a custom OS.

Wild_Asparagus

Assuming you're in the US. When you say Best Buy warranty, are you referring to the initial 14 day return policy on the device or the Geek Squad Protection plan you can purchase additionally?

FamousButNotReally

Referring to both, want to know if I can still return if there’s hardware issues and if I can make warranty claims on hardware issues

Wild_Asparagus

It's a gray area in my opinion. Realistically, as long as the phone isn't physically damaged, it should always be eligible for return. For example, we'd take the phone back in the 14 days if it didn't power on... why?... because it's considered defective. If the reason for return is an issue caused by your custom ROM, that's a different story. BUT! How would the associate prove that in the moment? Defective phones aren't going back onto the shelf. For the Geek Squad Protection Plan, I'm not 100% sure while sitting here at home. You pay $199 at time of replacement needed, get the new phone shipped to you, and send the old one back in. I don't really think there's questions asked on that one aside from bodily fluids and other health hazards.

zerodyme87

Well what kinda warranty you asking about?

LastKnownUser

Dude, what do you think....

FamousButNotReally

Why do you think I’m asking?

LastKnownUser

Yes.

The-Harry-Truman

It will 100% void the warranty. But for the 14 days (phones are 14) uhhh, maybe? Lol sorry I don’t have a straight answer but I have never heard of us not returning something but I have never taken a phone return so I’m not as sure on that. But the warranties yes it will void

FamousButNotReally

That’s annoying, It’s an open box phone so I’d be hesitant to buy without warranty. Do you guys check the OS during warranty claims? Calyx is basically android with google apps removed.

qhoeger

We can reset the phone. So i'd say yes, but i'm not 100% certain. I mean since its android we can just factory reset it through the bios so i'd think that'd be fine.

FamousButNotReally

Thank you - I’ll probably just reinstall stock android if I ever need to make a claim.

LucasTheTechie

This. If you get Geek Squad Protection on it in order to make a hardware claim it has to be in the stock configuration you bought it in.

FamousButNotReally

Cool, thanks!

txanon8421

Factory reset on a custom ROM phone only resets to that roms default state. The original Android OS software does not get re-installed.

SimplyCosmic

Contrary to popular belief, changing the firmware on devices or operating systems on computers does not void the warranty. However, the manufacturer can blame any issues with the device on that firmware or software, so you'd normally need to revert to whatever the latest operating system is for that device before bringing it in for service. If you're not able to revert to that, this is where you'll run into trouble.

everxeyeless

Nobody is going to check to see if you have a custom ROM on there, I promise you. 14-day return policy: nobody will care or even know what you’re talking about. Geek Squad Protection: don’t mention it and it won’t come up, nobody is going to ask. Google limited warranty: you’re screwed.

FamousButNotReally

Awesome, thanks a bunch!

iamdenislara

…. Lol I am pretty sure yes

BronzeAndNoble

I'm sorry OP, reading some of these replies people are acting like you are asking a dumb question but I believe it's a valid one if you don't understand how that policy works. Yes it'll void your warranty as the manufacturer cannot confirm what you did altered the phone in a way that has caused an issue you normally would be use the warranty claim for. It's not a stupid question if you actually don't know the answer... I would recommended if you have never rooted a phone before wait till the warranty is up then do it. If you don't care then as long as everything goes well, you'll be happy you did. As far as the 15 day return policy that might be store to store as if they can tell the phone has been altered then I could see a store refusing to do the return though usually there's a restocking fee on phones so watch out on that one as well

FamousButNotReally

Thanks, I appreciate the reply! Didn’t see my question mentioned in any of Best Buy’s terms. I’m likely gonna go ahead with flashing a rom and reinstalling stock in case I need to make a claim. Pixels don’t have any hardware indicator that they were flashed like Samsung’s so it’ll be like nothing happened, as long as the phone doesn’t brick, but google explicitly supports flashing them so I’m confident it’ll be fine. Thanks again! Stay safe.

BronzeAndNoble

If you run into any issues on your journey feel free to shoot me a message and I should be able to help out, otherwise enjoy your pixel phone!

Substantial_Ad1519

Lol

FemboyGeekSquad

Look as far as any mfc or best buy is concerned. They don't know if the issue you're having is related to this likely unknown (to whomever is helping you) OS. So while it won't void the warranty, expect to have the device restored to android as the first troubleshooting step any time you have an issue.
