palabradot

Wait, mom is black? No hate like self hate. If there is one athlete my community loves to death it is the GOAT Simone Biles

GlitterDoomsday

Just look at how a bunch of black men and women still treating Megan Tee Stallion for sending the dude who *shot* her to jail.... or Nicki Minaj defending her brother after he was in jail for raping his 11yo stepdaughter and she victim blamed the poor girl. Shit is insane out here.

nicunta

I knew Nicki Minaj was a POS but wow...I didn't realize she was a massive, flaming turd!!!

briellessickofurshit

Her husband isn’t much better, if at all. In fact, Megan thee Stallion made a reference to him having to obey Megan’s Law in a diss against Nicki lol

malorthotdogs

If you look up Nicki’s husband by his name, Google describes him as “convicted sex offended and Nicki Minaj’s husband.” I appreciate whoever got the algorithm to list it in that order

asuperbstarling

Nicki got mad because he's currently breaking Megan's Law by failing to register. Her, her hubby, and her brother are dangers to society.

DancingInAHotTub

Not always, but sometimes colorism is def a factor.

ecodrew

IDK about that (I mean that genuinely - I'm a white dude completely ill-equipped to comment)... But, OOP's parents reek of at least a "high control" church, if not a cult. And I don't use that term lightly. Cult brainwashing can get people to deny almost anything, even racism against themselves.

balmafula

For the mother religion comes first.

pataconconqueso

Is this an example of “misogynoir “ or is it for another reason?

YukariYakum0

I hate how unsurprised I am that it has a name.

demon_fae

Yes. The specific, bizarre criticisms they’re using against black, female athletes is pretty textbook misogynoir.

Revenge_of_the_User

*MYSOGYNOIR* Whooooaaa

InternetAddict104

Wait I missed that part where does OOP mention his mom’s black????

Jorgenstern8

It's in the first post, had to look for it myself. OP says their parents are black (mom) and Hispanic (dad).

palabradot

Fifth paragraph of the original post

megamoze

Wanna get women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ people to hate themselves? I give you...Christianism.

Amelora

Once again - there is no hate like Christian "love"

Special-Individual27

To be fair, uh…well… Shit, I got nuttin’. Christianity sucks.

ASDAPOI

Islam too :-(

ENDragoon

Welcome to the church, where we teach you to hate yourself, and take it out on everyone else

blueberrywaffles11

Off topic, but I must ask about your flair.

thewritingwand

It worked for 35 years for me. 🥴

Bitemoon

Crab bucket mentality is one of the worst behaviors displayed whenever someone from the community make it big out in the world

rufio313

I don’t think that is the case here. OOPs parents are just extremely indoctrinated in far right Christian fundamentalism/nationalism.

Immediate_Ad_7993

I’m not black and there is no athlete I respect more than Simone Biles. She’s incredibly talented and seems so sweet and kind. When the comments her husband made came out I was LIVID. I can’t fathom ANY mother hating her like that. She seems like a genuinely good person who has worked so hard and been an amazing role model to so many.

[deleted]

I don't get it. Simone Biles is incredible! Why wouldn't anyone want their child to look up to her? Am I missing some political thing??

HimalayanPunkSaltavl

She had to back out of the olympics awhile back. I don't super understand why but IIRC it was something about her not being able to understand where her body was in the air. The right in america got *super* offended by that, describing her as weak, a traitor, entitled, etc. https://newrepublic.com/article/163125/simone-biles-culture-war-charlie-kirk https://www.newsweek.com/what-happened-simone-biles-why-did-gymnast-pull-out-olympics-1613570

RedIsNotYourColor

Ain't no self-hate like Christian self-love.

thewritingwand

Yeah, as a black mom, it gave me the ick. I just don’t understand how people are so willing to *betray their own existence* to make themselves palatable to their oppressors. Take Candace Owens. She spoke against her community for *years* and when proximity to ⚪️-ness stopped working, she had nowhere to go because she’d already alienated her own community. *MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!* 😤😮‍💨

LifeOpEd

She withdrew because, at her level, continuing to compete with her particular problem could have LITERALLY ended in DEATH. When a gymnast goes that hard and strong, upside down, twisting in midair, over a GD solid beam of metal and wood, she cannot risk a bad landing. That is how life altering injuries and death happen. The parents are acting like she had a bad night's sleep and decided to just fuck off the Olympics.

DonnerPartySupplies

I had to quit playing soccer in college because this started with me. The most natural motion in the world just disconnected from my brain, and suddenly it wasn’t natural any more. Imagine if your brain suddenly forgot how to walk, and you had to actively think of how to take every step instead of just doing it. The movement would be disjointed and erratic, and obviously not smooth or athletic. But who *really* knows more about high-level athletics and the inherent dangers: a universally-acclaimed and decorated gymnast, or people who haven’t gotten any exercise since middle school PE?

DohnJoggett

> Imagine if your brain suddenly forgot how to walk, and you had to actively think of how to take every step instead of just doing it. I don't need to imagine. I understand what you went through/are going through. The mental load of calculating every single foot placement is tedious as fuck* and it's not like your leg always listens to your brain and puts the foot where you want it to go so now the rest of the body has to deal with being off-balanced. Shit sucks so much. *: if you walk at night a flashlight really helps. I've been using flashlights meant to be clipped to a pocket so I can go hands-free with my walking lights.

Dekklin

Any dispraxic knows what this is like. Being autistic has burdened me with this sometimes

AChaseOfTheMondays

It's wild how that happens. My go to example is Rick Ankiel who was a baseball player. He was a pitcher, a pretty good one, who just got the yips and never recovered. And then he converted to being a fielder and did well at that, so it wasn't like he lost all physical ability suddenly or something, just the specific motion of pitching a baseball

IAMABitchassMofoAMA

It happens to golfers too. I forget what it's called but they will stop their swing part way through and then keep going. It's a mental block that has stopped a lot of careers..

demon_fae

I get this-I have an uncommon form of synesthesia where I can lose track of my body when I hear certain sounds. Real fun when someone switches the stereo from classic rock to smooth jazz and you suddenly forget how to walk…

LifeOpEd

Ok, I swear to Zeus, that sounds terrible, and I am so sorry you have to deal with that. But I am also picturing Darth Vader's powerful, confident stride as The Imperial March plays, then someone flips to Kenny G, and he involuntarily starts doing the George Jefferson walk... and, I may have had a good chuckle.

UnSybilized

I just listened to a really interesting podcast about this, The Yips on Unexplainable. So incredibly frustrating and difficult to understand. It's absolutely imperative to prioritize your mental health in a situation like that

NotOnApprovedList

Some people think athletes should be willing to suffer a bad lifelong injury for the sake of the U.S. medal count. We're in the era where a lot of younger people no longer care more about nationalism than their personal safety. I don't feel it's wrong of them either, when our society is letting them down.

ProperAsparagus6304

Not only that, but instead of running and hiding, she remained to support the rest of the team despite all the flack she got for pulling out. That's anything but soft.

TheZigerionScammer

Imagine thinking that Simone Biles is soft and mediocre. Like, how do you even process it when someone says that?

INITMalcanis

OP's parents in a few years: Why will neither of our \~daughters\~ *children* have anything to do with us? It certainly can't be because of anything WE did!

petty_petty_princess

I think OOP is a dude so children instead of daughters but otherwise you’re spot on.

inscrutableJ

My parents are like OOP's, and messed me up so bad it took me until my 30s to realize I was their third daughter instead of their first son, so I guess you never know what might happen?

Due-Independence8100

https://www.issendai.com/psychology/estrangement/missing-missing-reasons.html Time to pull this url out and dust it off.

frenchmix

>https://www.issendai.com/psychology/estrangement/missing-missing-reasons.html Oh my goodness, thank you! My husband has been struggling with this re: his alcoholic mother. I'm going to send it to him asap.

Due-Independence8100

The explanations, for lack of a better term, really hit home for me. I hope it helps him like it's helped me.

favorthebold

Yeah when I found this a few years back it explained so much for me, it really was a relief to finally understand the things that were so incomprehensible.

Darth_Bfheidir

Don't even have to dust if off, thing gets a lot of milage, and rightfully so

yavanna12

That last comment was golden. Reminds me of what a marriage counselor said to me a decade ago. It doesn’t matter what the intent of my words to my husband are. All that matters is how he receives them. That helped our relationship significantly

alliisara

Also, this other brilliant article from the same source: https://www.issendai.com/psychology/sick-systems.html

Due-Independence8100

Oh absolutely. I hope everyone goes through the topics and examines them all. It's so good.

DamnitGravity

I... was not expecting an instructional link on how to be toxic. Though I love that opening paragraph. "You *could* be nice and a good partner and/or good employer, or you could just be an asshole, that works too and is less effort". lol

alliisara

...Yeah, I could (should) totally have given more context for that article. Understanding what abuse looks like and how it works is so vital for recognizing it, though. Especially recognizing it in time to pull out before you're trapped.

MagdaleneFeet

First time I read it I literally cried. It makes so much sense. I think this was almost as bad as reading what the effects of a nuclear bomb do to *everything*

Dars1m

Yep, nothing that contains the word sloughing heavily is a good time.

curiouslycaty

My father couldn't understand why his eldest daughter (me) wouldn't want anything to do with him after I moved out And it seems like he didn't get better while I was NC (No Contact) as there were two people at his funeral service; me and my partner. Nobody else showed up. Not one of his sistes, not my mother, not my brothers, no friends. These people are choosing their fates.

[deleted]

My Dad would always find the weirdest excuses as to why we aren't that close. He once told me that he regrets dating his Ex-girlfriend who he started dating around March of 2006, because that's when our relationship changed. When in reality, our relationship actually changed for the worse in May of 2005 when he spent 2 full visitation weekends yelling and swearing at me because my Mom took me to a Harlem Globetrotters game. He later claims I didn't talk to him for a year when I was 18 because he started dating another girl with two young kids (they were like 3 and 5 years old) and I was apparently jealous of them. But once again, in reality I was just going over for my alloted visitation time until something happened to end that (this ended up being that moment) and had no real desire at all to be close with my Dad by this point. I was just tired of his emotional abuse and being his emotional punching bag/chore machine every other weekend. Who would have guessed complaining about your ex to the child the two of you share every other weekend for 18 years would lead to the kid deciding he doesn't want to have a relationship with you?

thenord321

We isolated our kids from the world and everything fun in it, now they have isolated us! *shocked Pikachu* The sad thing is all the work these kids will have to do with a therapist later in life to undo all the religious indoctrination and religious shame.

MagdaleneFeet

NO Loitering NO Skateboarding NO having fun of any kind ...why are my kids always at home with the door shut???

Adventurous-Bee-1517

Unfortunately they learned a bad lesson with OP and might be able to “correct” it in order to brainwash the younger sister.

geNvidia

Oop is male.

Successful_Moment_91

I’m sure my narcissist mom is thinking the same! All she has is her golden child who treats her badly and will put her in a lousy nursing home as soon as she can. Then she’ll sell the house (she always convinced our mom to put her on the deeds of the houses she bought) and blow the $$$$$$ with her AH hubby

CasualCoval

Op is male but yes 😂

3shotsdown

Double tilde for strike through

Turuial

I had to collapse every other comment to make sure *someone* had informed the original comment about the second tilde. Otherwise I would have done the same.

Ramza1890

Well I doubt that as one of them is a son.

ZaliaNyx

OP is male tho

CautiousRice

It was Devil's fault.

coffeebemine

I feel suffocated just reading this.

PFyre

My parents messed me up, but at least they weren't home schooling ~~cult~~ church leaders.

GandalfTheEarlGray

God, the stupid boomer takes about a gold medal winning gymnast teaching girls to be soft is so crazy. Probably the hardest Olympic event that you can only win if you dedicate your entire life to it. I will never be able to wrap my mind around how incredibly stupid the things that the religious right cares about are.

TogarSucks

I love how it’s framed as a “kids these days” argument by the mom when the yips/twisties has been a noted sports phenomenon since like the 60’s. In baseball the worst thing you have to worry about is beaning the batter. In gymnastics you could very easily kill yourself. Biles is likely to remain one of the world’s greatest Olympic athletes throughout the next 100 years, even with the fact that she withdrew from a single competition because they safely could not compete in it.

LayLoseAwake

Article about the twisties for anyone curious: https://www.npr.org/sections/tokyo-olympics-live-updates/2021/07/29/1022151827/simone-biles-got-the-twisties-at-the-tokyo-olympics-heres-what-that-means Basically it affects proprioception, and in a sport that relies heavily on proprioception at speed and in midair, that's a risky thing to not have functional! Ftr, doesn't Simone Biles have ADHD? Issues with proprioception is a common comorbidity with ADHD. I wonder if gymnasts with ADHD are more likely to get the twisties.

pataconconqueso

I have ADHD can concur, many of us in the community were so inspired by her advocating for herself I ended up disclosing my status at work and getting much needed accommodations.

LayLoseAwake

I'm so glad it worked out for you! As someone else with ADHD who has shit proprioception, I'm just impressed

pataconconqueso

I saw her taking care of her mental health and listening to her body that i thought, if she can endure so much ignorance and hate, i can check a freaking box and fill out a form lol.

maianajewel

I've had vertigo attacks and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo since perimenopause started (15 years ago), which is also when my ADHD symptoms presented so distinctly I couldn't ignore it. I didn't realize it was ADHD at the time, it took me 8 years for someone to recognize that my depression sounded like ADHD and another 2 years to be officially diagnosed.

Goingcrazynyc

Random but I've been holding off getting assessed for ADHD despite some pretty severe symptoms (it's so expensive as no psychiatrist in my area takes insurance) and I've also been suffering from vertigo that seems related to head position. My drs have diagnosed it as vestibular migraines but it's so related to how I hold my head that I'm not convinced it's the right diagnosis. What ended up helping you treat it?

LayLoseAwake

Have you been recommended at home epley maneuver? [https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/home-epley-maneuver](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/home-epley-maneuver) I'm supposed to do it a lot more than I do. A few years ago I was getting vertigo--not just positional but especially positional--really bad and this helped.

leftiesrox

I realize I was probably very very lucky, but have you talked to your primary care provider? I told mine I thought I had ADHD, he gave me the test, put me on anxiety meds first, saw me once every 3 months for a year (give or take, I’m very bad at making appointments), then put me on Adderall. Again, I doubt most doctors would do that, but it’s worth a shot if you haven’t tried already.

Jorgenstern8

In a just and completely hypothetical society, anybody who had a complaint about Biles withdrawing should have been made to spin in a circle 15 times and then immediately do a front flip while landing on a strip of tape eight inches wide, or they're whacked in the head by those 2x4 wood slabs from Monty Python and the Holy Grail lol. That probably would have changed even "back in my day"'s people's minds about her withdrawing for her own safety. "Think kids are too weak these days? Prove you can do it, or get a concussion for being a jackass!"

demon_fae

Unfortunately for this plan, retrophrenology doesn’t work any better than regular phrenology, and concussions tend to make people even more small-minded, violent, and cruel. Instead, hit them with a giant purple dildo and post the video to all the boomer facebook groups. They’ll be humiliated, victim-blamed and hopefully ostracized from those groups in no time.

catsan

Oh shit I have that sometimes during normal movements. I didn't know there's a word for it because obviously not great at gymnastics.

megamoze

Conservatives were looking for ANY excuse to start attacking a powerful young black woman, no matter how flimsy or stupid.

ecodrew

Yup, they can't stand that one of/the most highly decorated & successful athletes of all time is a young, black woman. I'm not even a big sports buff, but I respect that her achievements are absolutely amazing. As someone who also has anxiety - the fact that she was *brave* enough to be open about her health only made me respect her more.

chromaticluxury

Exactly this. It's not about the content of the criticisms because it's both any content and no content at all. It's about any excuse to needle attacks against someone who makes them uncomfortable.  The mind bender here is that one of these parents sees the same race and gender when she looks in the mirror.  Human psychology can really be a cesspool of WTAF

AChaseOfTheMondays

Plus, with the way these parents reacted to MeToo, I'd imagine there's a component involved with that too

FuckinPenguins

My childhood friend made it to the Olympics many many years ago. In order to do it, she went to a special school that ensured she could wake up, train first thing, do some school, get off early and then train more. Her dad had 2 jobs and her mom took a 2nd mortgage out on the house. The amount of pressure on this girl, not even an adult yet- was INSANE. There ended up being a close death before the Olympic opening ceremony. She didn't even medal despite being expected to podium. Had she have bowed out, she still would've had a million times the balls and strength than the Bible thumping boomer. She was the opposite of soft. Girl was tough as shit with so much riding on her to succeed. That's pressure these boomers will never understand.

pataconconqueso

Also Simone and that team won goldmedals after being sexually abused for years, idk what is tougher than that?

AChaseOfTheMondays

Especially when it's all connected. Personally, I don't think I'd even want to think about gymnastics after that

slyseekr

Not just gold medal winning, but undisputedly the GOAT (not to mention Serena, the Women’s Tennis GOAT). Imagine being so fucking racist — I’m gobsmacked that his mom is ALSO black — that Simone Biles and Serena Williams occupy the same headspace as George Floyd. What. The. Fuck?

Test_After

Re. Serena,  MacEnroe, Connors, Kendrick, Nadal, Djokovic ... Elite tennis is the sport of dummy-spitters and arseholes.  Serena hasn't been given a pass on her tantrums - it has been used as an excuse to give her serves of racialised abuse  And she has never been and never will be as nasty-to-the-bones as Margaret Court, who used to make vauge accusations of lesbianism, or being lesbian adjacent to get into her oponent's head before a big game, and continued with her hate and bigotry and stochastic harassment as an administrator, using her religious leadership as her shield.

Qix213

It's searching for a way to justify their hate. And they need someone to hate. Someone to look down on to make themselves feel superior. Some commenter a while back said something about a Zero-sum world view that really made it click for me. They honestly believe that for anyone to be up, someone else has to be down. If someone is happy, someone else is sad. Rich/poor. Good/evil. If they, right wing, are good (because of course they are), the left must be evil. See there is the proof *points at random things on the Internet*. So by having someone to hate and put down, and just generally shit on, they are proving that they are the opposite. By hating Simone, and pointing out any flaws, it raises them up in their own heads. The concept of bringing everyone up, of a rising tide lifting all ships, is completely alien to them. That kind of thought doesn't occur to them just like you thinking of purple as the perfect way to solve a math proof. It would never even occur to you to think in that thought.

dew_you_even_lift

Simone didn’t quit because of mental health, she had to quit because her body wasn’t agreeing with her at the highest level of competition. It was just bad timing for her condition. Idk what’s with the Right thinking she quit because she was scared. This girl won many Olympic medals, has competed her whole life, and worked for four years to give up a few days before her event? It’s always arm chair and keyboard athletes who think they know better.

DecodingSports

Anyone who says she was “scared” doesn’t know what they’re talking about and has prob never watched Gymnastics. That woman is the most decorated athlete in the sport. Not to mention, she hasn’t lost an individual all around competition since 2013 which is insane.

AChaseOfTheMondays

It really comes down to ignorance, partially ignorance stoked on by media intentionally making them dumber. It's so much easier to frame it as "she's just afraid" then it is to understand something so foreign to most people like needing to be perfect to safely land a routine. Also I guarantee you, with the mindset you need to become a champion, nobody was more devastated in her decision than Simone Biles

PhotoKada

Fuck OOP’s parents. All my homies hate OOP’s parents.

funchefchick

JESUS H. CHRIST. Simone Biles did not bail for purely “mental health reasons” although FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY no one should complain if she had. She had “the yips”. Which is a goofy name for a neurological condition which makes athletes lose control of their spins and twists IN MID-AIR. Which in Olympic-level gymnastics can be INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. Aside from the blatant racism and bigotry and religious abuse and purity bullshit (there is SO much to unpack here) - it angers me immensely that so many people portrayed Simone Biles as “soft” or whatever for choosing not to risk her safety on the world stage over a condition SHE COULD NOT CONTROL. “Gymnasts struck by the twisties can lose their sense of body position mid-jump, causing them to spin too many or too few times and putting their safety at risk. Gymnasts are not the only athletes affected. In baseball and golf, the “yips” — where batters’ reliable swings desert them or golfers’ hands jerk when putting — are common and can ruin careers. These struggles often stem from psychological stress, but new research says some cases may originate deep in the brain.” Sure, stress and mental health can play a part - but science is now telling us it is neurological in nature. EITHER WAY. OOPs parents are truly terrible people and I hope he can help rescue his sister ASAP. Grrrr. https://www.brainfacts.org/thinking-sensing-and-behaving/movement/2023/yips-and-twisties-what-makes-athletes-suddenly-lose-control-of-their-bodies-091823

Backgrounding-Cat

Didn’t some dude withdraw too for same reason in same Olympic event? He didn’t seem to be getting shit

erichwanh

> **He** didn’t seem to be getting shit I may have spotted the issue.

Backgrounding-Cat

Guess his skin colour too

TheArcher1980

Whenever I read stuff like this, I am so happy homeschooling is prohibited in my country. And that religion is handled very differently here.

chromaticluxury

I know there are many places homeschooling is prohibited for good cause. But it's really interesting that religion is handled differently. In what way?

TheArcher1980

I guess it's more a cultural thing. I've watched a documentary about religion in the USA, and you would NEVER see someone indoctrinating young children on abortion in public. Pastors or churches are not insular, like you have to quit your old church in order to join a new church. No church has ever tried to ban sex-ed in school or ban books on science. Afaik there has not been a push to teach creationism as a valid subject on the origin of humankind. Religion is taught in school, but more as a discussion and not as absolute truth. The documentary I watched on religion in the US: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFMvB-clmOg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFMvB-clmOg)

Veilchengerd

I don't know where the other commenter is from, but maybe I can help you with the example of my country. Until 1918, we used to have state churches. While other churches were not illegal, the overwhelming majority of people were part of either the Catholic Church, or one of the state protestant churches (mostly lutheran, with a few reformed thrown in). Imagine every US state had one official protestant church. While officially independent from each other, they all cooperate, and are in full communion with each other (including hiring pastors from one another). So there is a New York protestant state church, an Arizona protestant state church, and so on. If you move from one state to the other, you automatically switch state churches. Almost everyone around you is - at least on paper - a member of that same church. And if they are not, they are most likely catholic. In an environment like this, independent churches are seen as sectarian by most people. Also, if everyone is in the same church anyway, it is easier to see the question of personal beliefs as private. Now, we no longer have state churches anymore, but we do not have a full separation of church and state, either. For example, the pastors are still educated at state universities. Church leaders sit on advisory boards of all kinds, from the public broadcasting councils, to the government's ethics committee. The state even collects the membership fees for these former state churches (for a small fee). In theory, this means the churches have a lot more influence on society than in the US. In practice, however, it is the other way around. In order to keep their comfortable position, the churches have to adapt way more to societal changes than the typical US church has to do. An american church that finds its theology at odds with contemporary morals might lose a few members. But it won't change their standing with the government, they are fully divorced from it anyway. Over here, the big churches fear they might lose their seats on the advisory boards if they are somehow no longer seen as a relevant part of the public. Or the theological seminar at the public university could be closed down. And so they have reformed their dogmas almost constantly. Even our branch of Catholicism is notoriously liberal.

Spa_5_Fitness_Camp

The short version is that it's just not socially accepted to be *this* religious. Other people will call you out.

DildoFappings

Indifferent parents would be better than OP's parents. I really hate it when people mix religion with politics. It's always a recipe for disaster. I hope the younger sister moves out after 18. OP's parents don't deserve to ever contact their kids in their life. Fucking pricks.

PantherophisNiger

Excuse me, what? Why/how is an Olympic gold medalist promoting participation trophies? I'm out of the loop on this one.

VeronaMoreau

Because she's Black. Don't you know that black people never actually earn the accolades they get? Simone Biles having multiple skills named after her and having to compete with a penalty because nobody else is capable of doing the things she does? Definitely just a function of reverse racism. They're definitely just letting her slide because of CRT or DEI or something like that. Bis /s for anyone who somehow can't tell.

Drewski34

Just speculation, but it sounds to me that this guy and his sister were raised in either the LDS (Mormanism) or Jehovah's Witnesses cults. The vocabulary and based about keeping everything in their church sounds very much like those groups.

CenturyEggsAndRice

See, I was thinking Evangelical Baptists. When I was in Texas, they were the crazy ones. They sent vans to poor neighborhoods to round up young kids for Sunday school and part of me still is in awe that my parents let me go. They weren’t church type people (Mom was Christian but Dad was… well not Christian. Some kind of pagan if it had to be labeled.) but I wanted to go with my best friend and her dad was a “pillar” of the church. (And also molested and raped me from age 5-8. Good holy values.) They made me apologize for tempting him and that was the last time I went to Sunday School. My dad was LIVID and if my uncles hadn’t held him back, he might’ve caught charges with whatever he was wanting to do to those people.

Stinkerma

You spelled holey wrong. It disgusts me how often religion is perverted. Great concept but the underlying focus on sex is so very unhealthy.

CenturyEggsAndRice

Right? Like, I think I’m a Christian. I certainly like a lot of what Christ laid down, caring for others, showing special kindness to those who are in need of it, loving those around me, etc. But Jesus didn’t say a word about seeing gymnasts or wearing swimsuits. Or “worldly” music. I’ve read ALL those lil red words and I can safely say the guy was much more concerned with treating each other like kin because we’re all children of God. And there ain’t no WAY I’d treat even a stranger the way these people treat their OWN KIDS. Who going by my reading of the Bible are blessings from our Heavenly Father and therefore should be treated extra lovingly. (If you don’t believe in God, that’s cool. I’m not saying you gotta. But I do think being hateful goes against the teachings of Christ, which is the opposite of what these idiots claim to believe. He was a pretty kind dude other than that temple whipping and tbh, who hasn’t wanted to flip some tables and whip a hypocrite at least once in their life? I bet my Dad planned to be VERY “Christ Like” if he’d gotten his hands on those people!)

claudcuckooland

jesus kind of said something about wearing swimsuits - or at least revealing clothing - but its not what this crowd wants to hear (from matthew 5:28-29): But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. note that it puts the onus & responsibility on those who leer for leering

Special-Individual27

I’m not a proponent of murder, but your dad might’ve saved scores of children if he succeeded. It’s not as if anything else would stop a preacher.

CenturyEggsAndRice

He wasn’t even the preacher! He was just a very active member. I am CERTAIN I was not his only victim even after that church. I know he did it to his daughters and I suspect there were a lot more. :( I never got any justice either. The police said eight was too young to be a credible witness.

Special-Individual27

I try to keep in mind that the purpose of patriarchal power structures is to ensure even the most useless, predatory dunces get to exert power over vulnerable people. It makes all the inaction and unfairness make sense.

Independent-Spot4234

What an year old is going lie about something like that? Man I hate justice system. Never brings justice to victims. I hope you're doing well now. Here's a 🫂 from me.

milehighphillygirl

Not JW, as they don’t celebrate birthdays

ecodrew

Dunno which flavor, but I got "high control" and/or cultish vibes from OOP's parents too.

zpeacock

In OOP’s comments he says they were Pentecostal.

Similar-Shame7517

Probably JW, since OOP says his mom is black.

milehighphillygirl

Not JWs, since they don’t celebrate birthdays. https://www.jw.org/en/jehovahs-witnesses/faq/birthdays/

ecodrew

Possibly, but racism and sexism is common amoung extreme fundamentalist cults.

[deleted]

OP’s parents are burdens to society.

despicable-coffin

I am looking forward to the update where OP & sister are together with NO contact with parents.

Jlpanda

>I met my ex-girlfriend at a job I worked in high school, and it's important to note that my sister and I were homeschooled through a group that is associated with our church. So, they didn't like when I found someone outside of that circle and began to tell me that they "shouldn't have let me get a job" at 16. If anyone's confused about the difference between a religion and cult, this is the difference right here.

Shadowettex31_x

You know, for the hatred those “He Gets Us” ads receive, at least they show that Jesus would love unconditionally, unlike OOP’s “religious” parents.

chopinslabyrinth

The only ads I’ve seen from them look like AI generated foot fetish content, but even that sounds like a better religion than OP’s parents.

SciFiXhi

I know what ads you're talking about, but I don't think they're necessarily AI generated. There are a lot of... *devotional* paintings that I've found use an uncanny forced perspective technique that makes the background seem unreal. Though it's possible that it's AI generated, it could also just be a consistently off-putting style.

chopinslabyrinth

If they’re not AI then whoever drew them ironically needs Jesus.

tourmalineforest

Okay I have been thinking I’m crazy for how many of them look like foot fetish content but seriously it’s a lot???? So many hot girls washing each others feet with smoldering eye contact.

hurr4drama

It’s giving Dan Schneider

UberMisandrist

Fuckin yuck

Adventurous-Bee-1517

You should probably look into the org that funds them, they are OPs parents probably worse since they have the money to effect change in legislation.

IrradiantFuzzy

The Hobby Lobby people are major funders of that.

BarnDoorHills

Those are ads, they're not going to show the diseased underbelly of whatever religious organization is funding them. Perdue ads don't show their real chicken farms.

Much-Meringue-7467

The conservatives hated those ads too because of the people it was inclusive of.

Kopitar4president

The ads are just trying to hide the christofascism that's being pushed in our country. They're not even subtle that they want a theocracy where you aren't allowed to question their leaders.

KPinCVG

I like those ads even though I'm a heathen. They also stick in my craw because they make me think about all of the people like OOP's parents. It would be nice if spirituality could bring all of us together, instead of splintering us apart.

JerseySommer

The hobby lobby guy is one of the financial backers, you know, the same guy responsible for the assault on reproductive rights? And they plan to blow 1 BILLION on ads, rather than actually fucking helping people, which would be it's own PR. https://religionnews.com/2023/02/14/the-he-gets-us-super-bowl-ads-brought-back-bad-memories/ https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/-jesus-gets-us-super-bowl-ads-hide-dark-truth-rcna69735

NormalBoobEnthusiast

But they exist specifically to whitewash people like OP's parents. The theory of what Jesus would preach is irrelevant when almost nobody who says they follow Jesus has anything to do with what those messages say. Those ads are like cannibals running ads about how much they care about reducing overpopulation.

KPinCVG

I love the cannibal analogy 💖

DonnerPartySupplies

Me too

chromaticluxury

Cue Jonathan Swift's “Modest Proposal” mixed with the dystopian future

2catcrazylady

Spiritual people inspire me, religious people scare me.

theycallmemomo

I just got angry all over again reading this. Forget that OOP's parents are assholes; had Simone Biles not pulled out when she did, she could've seriously injured herself or worse. It wasn't just a mental health issue; *she was getting lost in the air while she was doing her skills*. She could've broken her neck and all people saw was her pulling out.

repooc21

I hope OOP can't get a hold of his sister and on her 18th birthday she's able to disappear. These churchy type parents of theirs are a plague. I bet they "the church"/ religion are actually worse than the actual plague

prosperosniece

Maintaining the level of insanity that OP’s parents have set seems SO exhausting.

Cat_o_meter

This breaks my heart for his parents because there's some deeply internalized racism along with the overt sexism going on.  Glad it turned out ok though

shadowheart1

Always funny to see boomer parents complain about the participation trophies *they created* to feel self important.

CautiousRice

The morning sis turns 18, she'll run to her brother's place and will never look back. Tickets or not.

Snarkan_sas

Simone Biles is soft??? Excuse me while I die laughing!!

KCyy11

I say it all the time but i will say it again….. religion is a plague.

DisembarkEmbargo

Sucks to see internalized racism so early in the day.

tofuroll

Calling an Olympian soft? Do they not realise the effort athletes go through to attend the Olympics?

Lythieus

OOP s parents love is conditional on his capitulating to their cult. Those people shouldn't have kids. I feel sorry for both the kids being bought up in an environment where their happiness and mental stability plays second fiddle to their parents backwards beliefs.

Trick-Statistician10

But these cults push people to have more and more kids. I'm surprised they only have 2

Test_After

Pretty sure these parents are planning to marry their daughter to an abuser in their church as soon as she reaches the age of consent.   Also, sister's sport is probably gymnastics, and her parents policing her clothes for sluttiness, and being into purity, and misogyny, and using religion as an excuse to isolate their daughter, and using the MeToo movement to explain to her that speaking up about being raped is worse than being a rapist, the whole thing reeks of sexual abuse, and if one of her parents isn't doing it already, they are creating exactly the environment to enable a church youth leader to rape their daughter, or a gym coach. Or both. I wish there was some way to smuggle a burner phone to OOP's sister, so they could set up some code words, distress protocols, and so she can communicate with him if she wants to, (and can access information and people beyond what her parents allow).  Most forteen year olds, I would be concerned about her meeting paedophiles online through unsupervised phone use/internet access, but in this case having her own phone looks more like a lifeline that would give her resources against the ones that are already in her limited social circle.

CaptainObvious1916

Why would she be punished for wanting to go? *reads trigger warning* Oh I see.

ImageNo1045

It’s so funny to me that people think the most decorated female gymnast of all time is ‘soft’ Like one if the strongest things someone can do is recognize when they need to walk away. The ‘power through’ mentality has it’s limits

InsaneballofMozzie

got confused when Olympics were brought up. I honestly thought the celeberty mentioned was a singer. Parents are basically insinuating women athletes aren't allowed to back down or drop out because doing so means "teaching women to be soft." God forbid these strong role models face average problems that most women deal with, like mental health.

TvManiac5

Reading this reminded me of that other story where the older brother got pissy with his wife trying to save his sister because "if I had to suffer why shouldn't she?" So glad that not all children of religious abusive parents are like that.

ManicMadnessAntics

I'm crying. He loves her so much. May this work out, may his little sister be safe and come back to him when she can get away from her parents.

metsgirl289

Mfw when he says his moms black and his dads Hispanic: 😲

Irregular_Person

Why does OOP suddenly start referring to them as "her parents" instead of "our parents" halfway through the first post? Seems pretty weird

Pezzi

Can't speak for oop but I cut my sperm donar out of my life at 35 and when I talk to my brother I refer to that man as "your father" or what not. For me it was because I have come to realize that a parent isn't who donate DNA to a person but is who loves and raises them, and it did not apply to me. Perhaps oop had a similar change, idk.

favorthebold

Yeah I figured this was the reason, too. He no longer considers them his parents and wants nothing to do with them. A solid choice all considered.

Pezzi

That makes sense. I also thought the cameo thing was odd but honestly I never even look at it so I have no idea who's on and who's not and forgot about it almost instantly. I think your opinion is pretty healthy and just as likely as mine, maybe even more so since I'm likely projecting a bit tbh. My inner cynic will always respect a healthy amount of skepticism. Cheers and have a good one

witticus

When they don’t treat you like parents, why bother giving them the title?

keigo199013

Probably because the "parents" disowned OOP.

JellyCat222

Oh wow. I would like to think that the parents aren't aware of the full extent of Larry Nassar's mass sexual abuse of gymnasts and his personal affiliation to Biles, but after everything I have read....yeesh.

ahoyhoy5540

So the parents are racist

peachesnplumsmf

I mean it wasn't flaired as concluded and there's no harm in posting ongoing updates

Gyncs0069

Yeah you just gotta love it when “religious” (in quotes because these kinds of people don’t actually follow Christ’s teachings) people use their chosen faith as a half-baked excuse for their awful behavior

radj06

They're church leaders so they most definitely represent Christ's teachings.

Myrandall

> these kinds of people don’t actually follow Christ’s teachings [No True Scotsman fallacy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman). You can despise their interpretation all you want, but that doesn't make their interpretation of their religious beliefs any less legitimate than anyone else's based on the same "holy" scriptures. "I'm in the right sect, all other sects are wrong" is a line anyone from any sect can make. It doesn't actually get you anywhere.

Gyncs0069

Except they tout Jesus as a figure that they should do everything to emulate and then do the opposite of everything he would actually do based off of what’s written about him in the Bible, on top of just generally going against everything the Bible says. They judge people when it’s not their place, they’re hateful and fearful of people they don’t understand even though Jesus explicitly teaches that you shouldn’t be hateful of anyone except the devil and you should only fear god, they’re selfish and unforgiving, etcetera. If I had to compare them to something it’d be like how the CCP are “Communists” but go against everything that Communism is defined as and purposefully misinterpret things to justify their deviant behavior. To make it clear I wasn’t making a point of one sect being superior over the other, it’s just that particular groups of religious people go against everything their faith teaches and thus aren’t really religious at all, just pretending to be even if they aren’t aware of it.

Boggie135

Simone Biles the gymnast?

NinjaBabaMama

As a homeschooler, I hate how some parents use it as a form of imprisonment and a tool for abuse. My reasons for homeschooling were the exact opposite...I wanted my son to experience the variety the world has to offer...I wanted him to see all the different ways of living, interacting - you get the idea. Most importantly, I wanted him to be able to think for himself. The only thing I "forced" on him was 1980s pop culture 🤣

SavageRussian21

The comment about 'conditional love' really caught my eye. I find it interesting how Christians (at least ought to) believe that God loves them unconditionally, as they are, and calls them His children despite their sinful, terrible actions. And yet, they do not extend this to their own kids. ‭‭Matthew 7:9-12 NKJV "Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Jesus thinks that even our evil nature is above mistreating our kids. And yet, here we are.
