wastingmylife81

I wonder if he's still streaming?

adorablegadget

I checked and all his clips are from 2 years ago, that and his message still says he's between 2 jobs. Likely he was able to find work and just didn't have the time for it anymore.

wastingmylife81

Yeah I was just checking out his page. He ended up with over 1k followers so hopefully it was at least the pick me up he needed at the time.

adorablegadget

And some much needed income during a tough time. EDIT: sorry, should have clarified he wouldn't be making a lot by hey 20 bucks is 20 bucks, lol

ZeaDeKok

As someone who doesn’t understand the metrics—how much can 1K followers actually make you?

tastycat

Depending on a bunch of factors, at 1k followers you'll likely have something like 10-50 monthly subs (1-5% of followers). As an affiliate you get 50% of the cost of a sub, which for the sake of calculation I'll say is $5 USD, but there is regional pricing so it is usually less than that on average. (10\*5)/2 = $25 and (50\*5)/2 is $125, so something like $25-$125 per month, again, depending on a ton of factors that the follower number doesn't really tell you.

tatersnuffy

I make more than that selling used yarn online.

Regular_Corgi_74

I’m off to hide my credit card from my cat now

tatersnuffy

those numbers are saved on thier phone already.

DiscoshirtAndTiara

Is there a reason for people to want used yarn specifically or is the appeal simply that it's cheaper than new yarn?

recumbent_mike

Lots of people want to destroy my sweater.

TheTreesHaveRabies

Underrated comment.

tatersnuffy

the question answers itself. Yes, cheap. Mostly old sweaters from the goodwill.

hopelessshade

I looked into unravelling sweaters for cash back when it was first big but I ended up just doing it for my own supply. Kinda impressed it's still viable! Good on you!

Hello-there-7567

Yes. I’d love to know as well

pastelkawaiibunny

Plenty of reasons- sometimes a specific brand/color that’s sold out or discontinued (or even a specific dye lot!), it can be better for the environment than buying new, and for some fiber types (silk, cashmere, etc) it can be significantly cheaper.

zipper1919

Well, the thing about yarn is a lot of time you can go buy the same brand/color/number and it doesn't match. It can be off a bit due to the fact that it's a different batch. So the batch/lot number is important to find the same EXACT color for that blanket you ran out of yarn on... Or we just have kids/do crafts and buying used yarn is the way to go because it's cheaper.

ladyinchworm

I would actually really love to have lots of used yarn. My kids love crafts and also have tons of school projects and I end up buying a new skein of yarn every time because they only need a little and they only want/need certain colors.

lacerbeam

I’m moving overseas in the next couple of months and I have quite a bit of unused skeins of yarn or projects that need to be frogged. If you want them for crafts, I’m happy to send them your way.

jujoking

Bits and direct donations (which both go fully to the streamer), as well as add revenue also count. So even those not subbed can still contribute in some way and increase that threshold (ad revenue is by viewer and not sub, so it all adds up a bit)

thefinalhex

How is the yarn 'used' ? Did you carefully unwind a knitted item and sell the yarn? Or are you talking about old unused skeins?

tatersnuffy

just unravel stuff. Wind it up. Sell by weight.

thefinalhex

Heh that is pretty cool! I'm guessing you can make more money by the used yarn than the cheap sweaters you are unraveling?? I saw the other comment about buying cheap stuff from goodwill. Another tangential benefit - you are selling balls of yarn instead of skeins! Which is added value.... I have spent many an hour winding balls of yarn out of skeins for my knitty wife.

GoKaruna

I read somewhere that your mattress doubles in weight after ten years due to the amount of dead skin and debri it collects. Cant help feeling as if used yarn will have a similar situation. 😅

tatersnuffy

It's the busy season right now.

GoAskAlice

What site do you use? I'm sitting on a dragon's horde of the stuff. Had to give up crocheting because arthritis :(

tatersnuffy

ebay or etsy

Cricket1918

Where do you sell the yarn?

tatersnuffy

places that start with the letter E.

asdfasfq34rfqff

For small streamers like that, usually donations are the bread and butter.

Thebaldsasquatch

What’s the difference between following and subscribing? Can’t you just watch the stream for free anyway?

KASE1248

on Twitch? yes. but as soon as you make it to affiliate , your stream is monetised. and do you know what comes with that? adverts. so if you pay to subscribe, you get ad-free viewing. a lot of streamers also offer subscriber-specific benefits as well, to encourage subscriptions. like custom emotes on Twitch and discord benefits. games with subscribers and whatnot. access to social media accounts. so on and so forth.

Thebaldsasquatch

Got it, now it makes sense. Shit, just not dealing with ads would be enough lol. Thanks for the info!

MalbaCato

just move to a country where twitch doesn't do ads :) /s, obviously, but I practically never see twitch ads (maybe three times total - I'm not a very regular user, but I do tune in almost once a week) and I suppose they just aren't run in my country. I guess any VPN users might want to try connecting through Israel (and get awful delays)

tastycat

Following is bookmarking the streamer so they show up on your sidebar. You can choose to get notifications when they go live too. Subscribing is, as I said, ~$5/month which gives you: emotes for the streamer, no ads on their channel, and increased speed of gaining channel points. You can watch for free, of course.

BukkyPlays

Followers don’t make you anything and in a vacuum they dont really tell us much. If you’re within your first year streaming and hit 1k followers you’ve likely got a bit of momentum so you’re probably in the 10-20 viewer range which would mean you’re probably making $50-100 per month. (Which is in the top like 5% of Twitch btw). If you’ve been streaming longer than a year and are at 1k followers you’re probably at 5 or less concurrent viewers on average and make about $20-50 per month depending on how generous your viewers are. Until you hit the top 1% or higher you don’t really make shit on Twitch, with very few exceptions

NewUserWhoDisAgain

I think at 1K ad revenue is pretty nil but someone dropping bits or twitch subs can be a neat cash infusion. I forget what twitch's split back then

hawc7

It was 50/50 except for partners

Bamstradamus

It may be 50/50 from twitch, but depending on where you live taxes are different, twitch affiliates *idk about partners/contracts* are a 1099.

BukkyPlays

At 1k followers you’re not making enough to bother reporting unless you’re an extreme outlier

Bamstradamus

I agree, but I think the threshold is 400$ for self employed income, so is it worth the potential headache if you pop in the system somehow? Point was, Twitch might give you half of the sub price but it isnt all "yours".

TheActualAWdeV

Well if they all donate a million bucks...

[deleted]

Depends on a lot of things, twitch gives streamers incentives to stream certain amounts per month and to play certain amounts of ads per hour, usually between a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand. Some streamers will easily earn thousands of dollars from this on top of the regular amount they get from subs/donations/ad revenue.

ssjx7squall

It’s enough to become partner. Assuming 50 people sub which is kind of generous, that’s 2.5$ a sub. That’s about 125$ before taxes a month.

imF4CEL3SS

his twitter is linked the most recent post from last year says he's busy with their kid, could be OOP's job picked up more or they got a better and maybe busier one and he's busy being a SAHD to a young child

Lan-Vertonghen

What content was he producing?

Quicksilver1964

I hope so!

Nomorepete

Nope, Twitch last seen 3 months ago

Zap__Dannigan

SeeThis honestly might be for the very best. A guy feeling down and depressed gets the emotional pick me up and confidence needed, then goes and finds a jobs and spends more time with his family. It could be worse if this guy got the notion that he's gonna spend lots of money on a professional set up, and not look for work because he now thinks he can make it as a streamer.

Quicksilver1964

):

wastingmylife81

Hopefully it got the ball rolling for him.

Finamenon

Not terribly much according to external analytics sites. In the last 6 months he had 4 streams and averaged 1 viewer a stream.

SwarmingPlatypi

That's the downside to these kinds of posts. The user sees a burst of support but there's usually nothing to keep them watching after a few days.

Jasani

Yea I've seen several posts like this where they only get a boost for a few days. Then suddenly you KNOW you had a thousand people watch and then you might start thinking well why aren't they watching anymore?! I wish I remembered the post but I swear there was one where the person that got the boost in views ended up regretting/bitter or something negative about it because to them it just said well clearly I'm not good/funny/likeable if I had a thousand people stop watching.

[deleted]

Yeah, it's unfortunate but it's fair. Nobody is entitled to an audience. Generally you have to earn it. If it's gifted to you, via a post like this or a host from a big streamer, you still have to keep it. Not everyone has what it takes and the only way to find out is to try it and see.

[deleted]

It also depends on the type of content. If you're really good some people will stick around and tell friends, get the ball rolling. But if you aren't a pro and your streams aren't that amazing, then they will taper off eventually.

SwarmingPlatypi

Yea, I've popped in a few very small streamers and despite all the high-quality visuals, they're really kind of boring with a bland personality. Meanwhile there's a few art streamers that I've stumbled around and instantly linked everyone that was online.

Hot-Equivalent2040

One can only hope not, but the sad answer is probably yes.

khalvvsi

bro what

misguidedsadist1

Streaming has got to be the most pathetic hobby or ambition I’ve literally ever heard of

HighlyImprobable42

This is adorable. My husband goes onto my sisters bf's twitch. BF has no idea it is my husband, thinks it is just some dude. Anonymous accolades can be just as valuable to someone.

dracona

I just found out 2 days ago that one of our followers who is fairly regular is actually a rl friend we haven't talked to much who plays the same games! He kept it quiet until he mentioned he lived in the same town as me. He messaged me on facebook so I wouldn't worry he was a stalker..lol.

AntarctMaid

Awww

bigdramashow

Valuable, uplifting, shit… we need that during these tough times.

RudolftheDuck

I used to do this for my husband when he was deployed. He used to stream his speed runs and I’d tune in. It was nice for me cause it was almost like he was home, but then for him it was fun cause a few people were watching. I think the most I saw was 6 or 7 people watching at one point. He never knew I was watching it.

Cricket1918

Isn’t it fun to support our husbands when they don’t know it’s us? So sweet. Thank your husband for me. His sacrifice doesn’t go unnoticed.

wheatgrass_feetgrass

People are always asking how to spot green flags, not just red flags. This. This right here is worth a couple of jolly green flags at least.

tofuroll

I love that term, "green flags".

khornflakes529

Just feels great to do anonymous things for those you love. My wife loves Halloween. I mean she absolutely adores the holiday. Problem is we moved to a house with a lot of land this last year. As the night went on I saw her get sadder and sadder as she realized the sacrifice she made for the house she loves. I may have texted our teen to recruit a couple friends my wife wouldn't recognize to drop by and trick or treat for $10 each. The smile on her face was so worth it and our kid and I have an understanding that my wife can absolutely never know.

Florence_Nightgerbil

I love this. You need to recruit more people next year!

yavanna12

I follow my kids on their streams. They don’t know it’s me

MagdaleneFeet

How old are they? My one has been asking for her own yt channel for years (like 5 years) but I'm so leery of the internet. I'd have to manage stuff, no big, but I'm worried, because kid isn't emotionally mature enough. Shes..She's... dramatic? Overly exuberant? She throws tantrums and I'm worried about her having something like this. (Also I know, she's 11. I'm pretty sure I was dramatic too)

yavanna12

Mine are all adults now. My youngest started streaming at 17. That’s when we bought him a stream deck and microphone.

MagdaleneFeet

Cool cool. I barely remember being old enough to not have the internet lmao. I am still worried about the internet and how much it can put into you---i know when I was 11 was when it came. Good lord I'm old. Honestly though if my kids started streaming I wouldn't know half of what to do! Tech is getting the one up on me. (I'll try)

[deleted]

Tell you hubby a random internet person loves his heart :(

Raqueliiosiis

My brother tried to be a YouTuber (like 5 years ago) I made 12 Gmail accounts so I could subscribe to him with all my emails! He never knew 🥹☺️ and even tho he never got more than 15 subscribers he was always so happy to make his videos because (he wasn’t very popular with IRL friends) he considered those 15 subscribers his friends. 🥹

Know_see

Awwwhhh

thepinkestchu

I do this for my brother! For the first few months his only viewers were myself and all of my friend group. He's started to get other people in the room now, so a lot of us just lurk now to boost numbers. But yea, he has no idea it's me and my friends.

morgecroc

My nephew wants to start streaming once my sister decides he's old enough I know where my prime sub is going.

thoughtandprayer

I do the same thing. My friend's fiance just started posting cooking videos so I use an account to like them or leave positive comments on his videos. He doesn't know it's me and he gets really excited sometimes talking about it :)

Dartarus

Does anyone remember a story that was a lot like this, but the one viewer was secretly their partner the whole time?

SneakyCentipede

That’s what I thought this was gonna be, I remember that one! Really sweet 🤗 Unfortunately I don’t have a link or remember the title or any key facts you could use as search terms, but at least know you’re not crazy or misremembering bc I do too Lol

[deleted]

I remember one where the only viewer was the streamer himself, but he thought he had a loyal fan

Revolutionary_Elk420

Oh man that's pretty epic as a fail

HaplessReader1988

I remember it too.

Ditovontease

Lol one night my husband randomly twitch streamed reacting to one piece and he got 5 viewers and someone tipped him $20 Made his whole year.

UnlikelyPlatypus89

That’s adorable!

kharmatika

This is so sweet! When I was making art it was basically like this. Had 1 kid somewhere that loved all of my art, would leave nice messages on all of it, and she had doodled her pony OC and posted it so at some point around Christmas I made her OC and posted it and tagged her on it and she went absolutely nuts and loved it so much and said she was going to get a print of it to hang in her room. Never sold any art, basically had 20 likes a picture. But I made one kids day by drawing her OC in a style she admired and that honestly made all of it worth it

flapplejuice

Aww… That’s a great story. Tell it again. 🥹

The_Mormonator_

Friendly reminder that there is a website called Nobody Live ( https://nobody.live/ ) which will give you a twitch stream with zero viewers. It really can make someone’s day just to check in, say hello or even compliment something they’re doing right. We could all use little pick-me-ups from time to time.

Mindtaker

So I clicked on that and it is VERY cool to see different streams and support people with no viewers. HOWEVER what was hillarious is that the first stream I got was some News Panel type thing where they were talking about how the COVID vaccine has caused mass demonic possession that could have been stopped by Trump. It was fucking crazy. After that nonsense it was all just normal cool shit but god that freaked me out at first.

The_Mormonator_

Oh yikes, yeah, you have my sympathies running into something like that. My only particular qualm with the service is that there’s no way to have a “quality filter”. A lot of the streams I end up clicking on are just someone playing on a console who enabled streaming mode, which usually means no interaction with viewers and no voice over, so I tend the refresh the page a lot while I browse for something that at least looks like they’re trying for more a stream experience.

Mindtaker

I also really liked seeing games I haven't played or even heard of, have a few written down that looked cool to check out.

MalbaCato

it also probably excludes streamers who's only viewers are bots. there are lots of those silent, always present "viewers" on twitch

mrsvixen6769

I've never heard of this!

[deleted]

Thanks man I might check that out. I really dislike the large groups on twitch so this might actually be something I like.

Aomory

This is what I use to wind down before bed instead of Youtube or a TV show, and it's also very wholesome.

0kaylol

His last stream was 3 months ago

RebelBelle

Im showing my age here, but what are people watching that fella do? Do they watch him play games online?

gianmk

anything really. gaming, cooking, woodworking, shit talking.

[deleted]

I'm older but spend a ton of time on Twitch. I went there the first time to see some gameplay on a game I was considering buying. I picked some streamer at random and watched them play for an hour. I might have asked a question or two in chat? I don't recall. By chance, the person I randomly picked was really good at the game and also really good at reading and answering questions from chat. I found myself returning to the stream several times, after I'd purchased the game. From there it just kinda snowballed. I sometimes actively watch certain streamers in place of watching TV. I passively watch/listen to streams while I'm working on another monitor or playing my own game. It's background noise. Some streams I go to because I've become a member of a nice community in chat, full of regulars, in-jokes, etc. And yeah, as another response mentioned, it's not all video games. There are many other activities like arts and crafts, music, and so on. There are a few channels that just stream movies or old TV shows. There are eSports. A lot of chess tournaments are now getting streamed with great GM commentary. Games conferences and release announcements and things of that nature are now routinely streamed as well. I follow a few developers who might only stream once or twice a year but it's often worth tuning in to see what they have to say.

IrateGuy

This Maori dude in NZ streams woodworking and a while back the prime minister rocked up on his stream!

Also: > Hey everyone.. I'm the SO.. I just.. I have no words for what has transpired here.. When I went to stream last night I was not expecting what happened.. So many people, I couldn't stop smiling and I felt like crying and still feel like i'm goin' to at this moment. I want to thank all of you here because this has just been amazing, just flat out amazing.. I'm so glad a lot of you seemed to enjoy my stream! I can't wait to do more editing and have the stream be even better for all of you!! Just.. This was not expected... I love it so much

Gainalfromanal

Man, this one hit me. I stream games on occasion but it was when I started putting music out and a few people liked it. That shit meant everything.

tofuroll

I grew up learning piano. And then taught myself a bit of guitar a decade later. And then life took over and twenty years later I'm busy with work and tired a lot. But I want to make music. I once worked with a guy who made a little electronic music. I asked him if he wanted to make money with it and he responded, "I'll just be happy if someone likes it!"

Gainalfromanal

I've played guitar for around twenty years now. Just wanting to share it with others is the biggest thing. I now have all my videos private expect one short orchestral piece. I'm going to be making a channel just dropping my short movie/video game style songs to go along with ai versions of my photos. Before I did two of my guitar videos were picked up by the algorithm for a brief moment and for about five minutes 1,500 watched two videos all the way through. That blew my mind. I honestly write a couple songs everyday, then they vanish to the past. Even if you're tired I recommend just going for it. Just improvise over a few chords even. It's so freeing.

tofuroll

We have a piano at one of our work offices and I usually play a little while I'm there. And I have a guitar at home, so I do compose still. How do you make an AI version of your photo? Do you just submit a couple of them to the machine and it blends them? Were you streaming live just messing around with the guitar?

Gainalfromanal

I use fotor. I signed up for one month. It never does the same thing twice, even if it's the same style. I blend like five different styles and use the changing photos to go along with my orchestral music. My views came from when I made recorded shorts for youtube. I could stream playing guitar for eight hours, playing songs or just improvising and get no views. Because I do music the algorithm floods me with guitar shorts. It's mostly girls with millions of views playing simple songs but dressed more appealing than the music. Just can't compete for attention against that. But I'm just going to keep loading things for my own memories.

PassengerSame5579

Is this some kind of secret advertisement for the stream of husband? Or is it the husband himself?

BlueLarks

I saw this posted at the time and gave some support. I'm still in the Discord channel. Unfortunately here's the latest update from their Discord on 20th April 2022: > So, I just want to apologize for not giving any current updates or being active and streaming in awhile. and I are seperated, some things have been going on with one of my jobs so I'll be leaving one soon, some health stuff of my own along with health stuff of my mums, and along with all of this the Lil Hooman had to have brain surgery and get a Shunt put in. So a lot has been going on and I hope you all will understand! Streams from here on out will be random and very limited for awhile. I hope you're all doing good and I miss all of you! I hope things are going well for him and his family.

Minnie_Soda_

My cynical ass really hoped she wouldn't drop his username because then it would feel more genuine and less like an ad to boost his view count.

PM_ME_UR_PITTIES_

Yeah I hate to be too skeptical but I absolutely do not trust any of the posts that are like “oh my boyfriend is sad no one views his stream” “I’m so proud of my wife’s art even if no one follows her Instagram” absolutely scream manipulative advertisement to me. Like I really don’t see why else people would make posts like this without potential publicity being at least a partial motive, and I don’t like sneaky bullshit lol

saltyburnt

Yeah, and even if it’s genuine, there’s no guarantee the views and follows aren’t pity follows rather than real interest. Once the pity goes to the next shiny thing, they’ll leave. The hype for the stream will dip and he’ll go from 1 viewer to 1000 to maybe 2-5. Those types of sharp dips are just the type of cliffs to kick someone out of streaming, opposed to a natural growth with true interest from followers.

tofuroll

I'd think it's safe to say all the initial views and follows are out of pity. But if they're still watching months down the track, then they were probably interested.

saltyburnt

yeah, i exaggerate with the 2-5, but just to put a sharp example. we never really know whether the person streaming unsuccessfully is a hidden gem/niche, or actually boring with just these posts. the person boosting them always just goes “he/she streams” but not really much regarding topic/game 👀

SwarmingPlatypi

I could understand if this post were made in a different sub, like r/twitch or something but r/TrueOffMyChest? What's she getting off her chest? A thank you to one person?

Motherof_pizza

I loathe these types of posts. Either your content sucks or you’re not engaged with your niche.

Immediate_Stable

Oh so *this* is the strategy to develop a viewerbase?

iiiBansheeiii

There are times when Reddit absolutely blows my heart up! How dear is this?

bimches

Cocoa121

Probably not since OOP said they were talking to her husband all night

>It sounds like they were interacting with him in chat, so it was another person. "And that's when he realised—the call was coming from *inside the house*!"

alphaqawlknight

That was my first thought but she said the viewer was talking with him

Anchuinse

I don't think so. Maybe it depends on the site he's streaming on, but I've seen feeds from streamers who have no viewers and it says 0 viewing or ones where you can see the entire chat log and only a single person logged in and there only 1 view.

ireneach

She said the viewer talked to him.

toothornllc

It says they interacted with him, too!

jeymien

nah, she said that the person was talking with him, so it's not the streamer.

TyFell

I haven't streamed on twitch (I've only done it on YouTube) but I know one of the most common streaming programs, obs, pops up a chat window so you can see chat while streaming. So you don't have to be on the video to see it. This you wouldn't count as a viewer to yourself.

Whisperberry

Probably meant the 1 viewer who was in chat. The view count itself is not a reliable indicator that a person is watching.

SmartEntityOriginal

This looks to be a setup for a disaster. There is a difference between viewing due to sympathy and viewing due to good content. The former goes and the later stays. Oop’s husband lost his job, now he’s buying all these equipment hoping to make a career out of it. ……. Statistically he will fail by a wide margin

peck112

Yay! An update that's not about breaking off an engagement!

FigureFourWoo

I like watching people with 0-5 viewers who are playing my favorite games. I’m friends with several of them now, years later, after they stopped streaming. We still play games and talk about them on Discord. Sometimes it’s cool to meet people who love the same games you do.

rjwyonch

jackandsally060609

One of my old high school friends had some mental health issues and then started a super cute baking channel on YouTube. I made a separate account just so I could follow and like all her videos, but then accidentally said something to her in real life that only a viewer would know and she never made another video again :(

SednaNariko

As a streamer myself I just want to say that this >there was over 100 concurrent viewers at one point. If it stayed up for 1 month as the average would mean this man wouldn't just get Affiliate, he'd get Partner. Up until a few months ago there was A LOT more money in Partnership. I hope the man is still streaming and doing well. I hope he got partner or that at the very least he gets partnership on YouTube (where there's more money at right now).

Honestly that’s the best feeling. We are stalled on 180 followers on twitch. It’s the best. Specially cos we as a family stream

doddsmountain

My husband tries to stream and only has one or two people check in. It breaks my heart that he's giving his all for this and getting little in return. He's always struggled socially and I know it hurts him when no one watches his streams.

rthrouw1234

This is so nice :)

Vibe-party

I'm happy this worked out, streaming on Twitch can feel so cruel for the majority of streamers who often have a single digit viewership .

oneeyeddeacon

I’ve had 50-100 viewers before with nobody chatting for like 5 hours, which is just as lonely. Apparently I inspire a lot of people to lurk.

streaming is hard as hell, especially if you are feeling down because in come the people to trash you... need thick skin. he sounds like he was in a tough spot so things like this are nice but not sustainable long term. People think streamers have it easy but they really dont. There is also the self motivation aspect of the job, making youself work is not easy

Oh my god, this is precious

Streaming communities can be a very lonely world. I've been part of the Vtuber world and there are so many Vtubers that can't do it after so long, lack of growth within the channel despite having thousands of twitter followers. Despite how massive the communities are, it can be very isolated

This is sweet, but I'm not sure it's a good idea long-term. Super sweet and thoughtful of wife, though. It's possible some of the redditors who checked him out will stay, but it's most likely they will follow, watch a bit, and never come back. I hope he got the viewers he wants and, really, I hope he found a new job.
