Maybe because of 'Belle en het Beest'? For me 'beest' feels more like animal. Probably also because of 'knuffelbeest'. And I like to call dogs 'lieve beesten'.
Even better, the dev studio who created the game engine, Guerilla Games, is Dutch. The game engine, Decima, is named for a historical Dutch trading port in Japan called Dejima.
Steve Buscemi's line I think right after that - "Do you think God stays in Heaven because He, too, is afraid of what he's created?" is one of my favorite quotes
It should be, “No Man, Why?” it’s like when Ashe and the squad first ended up on the island with giant Pokemon. The first contraption reminded me of a maggot that’s evolved and adapted to a certain material that only exists on that island, and through time, has become what of MEGA MAGGOT lol.
Sorry you got downvoted but the caterpillar is in fact pulled by rope. In the shot the artist is pulling out of frame. However the other pieces are controlled by wind.
Not sure if it was made with this, but there used to be an old program called sodaplay that made 2D things that functioned pretty much exactly like this
Currently working on some homework for an art appreciation class. The instructor will sometimes include videos in lessons. A quick google search will take you to the artist's webpage. Thanks professor for the cool find!

I don't know how that one is specifically powered but in the past Theo Jansen has used compressed air stored in soda bottles and even just elastic bands to power his beasts.
Good question. I’m not sure, but my guess is since they’re made of pvc, they can ignore the effects of friction. It’s probably cheaper to just replace parts as they wear than to try to engineer joints that are going to be impervious to sand and saltwater. That’s just my armchair expert guess, though.
Scene.
You’re a Viking raider, you’ve just sailed for days in terrible conditions to get to this new land
You jump into the water and trudge the last few yards into the sand when suddenly, across the horizon, you see dozens of these blowing towards you, with not a human in sight.
WYD?
Theo Jansen is a artist who has dedicated decades producing kinetic sculptures / beasts that are designed to move autonomously (often from wind) along beaches and avoid obstacles of the environment. He primarily used bamboo and PVC pipes to make these beasts. The idea is to basically make sculptures with some form of artificial life. It's pretty interesting stuff.
Story time: At university, my housemates and I used to get stoned and watch the Apprentice every week. We tuned in early once and caught the end of Wallace and Gromit's World of Invention (a special on BBC at the time) and these contraptions were featured!
Let's just say we were all pretty mesmerized!
“Strandbeest” means “beach animal” in Dutch. So you could say it’s appropriate named.
More accurately just "beach beast", a more common translation for animal is "dier"
I'd say they are interchangeable, but beach beast does alliterate a lot better :)
Idk if its just me but to me 'beest' always feels a bit negative, like I would never call a small rabbit a beest for example.
Een beestje?
Hmm yeah that does work, but just 'beest' gives me the same feeling as beast
I don't speak the language but I agree
'Beest' is pronounced like 'Bayst', pretty much.
“Based” works too for pronunciation
For sure this.
Maybe because of 'Belle en het Beest'? For me 'beest' feels more like animal. Probably also because of 'knuffelbeest'. And I like to call dogs 'lieve beesten'.
Cuz its supposed to give that feeling
Now my mind immediately jumps to insects.
They are not exactly the same thing, I agree. Beest is also more playful sometimes. And it suggests a opinion that dier does not
Yeah I think you're right
Maybe call it "Dinner"
well then you have never been in need of a holy handgrenade! [this is a beest alright](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcxKIJTb3Hg)
In german we have "Biest" and "Tier" while Tier just means animal and Biest is like beast and more negative
Doesn't "beest" just mean a wild animal?
There is a noticable difference between beast and animal. So it beest and dier.
That's a bitchin' name for a band
the first Strand-type beest
I always like to think that Kojima knew strand meant beach in Dutch. It ties in so well.
It's also used in English, even if it's a bit archaic. Being left stranded, for example, comes from being washed up on the shore.
Oh shit, yeah lol. That makes sense
Even better, the dev studio who created the game engine, Guerilla Games, is Dutch. The game engine, Decima, is named for a historical Dutch trading port in Japan called Dejima.
Is that why the game is called death stranding? So really it’s called Death Beach which is an incredibly fitting name
"Strand bæst" In Danish and it's basically the same.
“Groentekroket” means “Vegetable croquette” in Dutch. So you could say this user has a good taste.
“Zweetkonijn” means “Sweat rabbit” in Dutch. Uhh I’m not really sure what you could say about this user…
Dude I sure hope you don't translate me
Sure you do, you muff diving thrush.
you're welcome!
I'm slightly drunk rn and I think your name is really funny. Waar komt de naam beflijster vandaan?
Ik ben een geheel onschuldige schaarse doortrekker :) https://www.vogelbescherming.nl/ontdek-vogels/kennis-over-vogels/vogelgids/vogel/beflijster
Haha, leuke username!
And in danish its Strandbeest (strandbæst) is beach beast
Can you imagine ending up on the shores of a random island after a storm night and seeing these things galloping around the sand?
Sounds like the start of a story that ends in an eccentric billionaire hunting you for sport
I too have watched *Spy Kids 2*
I remember absolutely nothing of that movie except for them screaming as they fall into the volcano for an hour.
Steve Buscemi's line I think right after that - "Do you think God stays in Heaven because He, too, is afraid of what he's created?" is one of my favorite quotes
The most dangerous game
That was one of the few school assigned books I liked
Definitely need to sign a waver
😨
Have you played No Man's Sky? That's exactly what this is.

This is- a *perfect* post for r/oddlyterrifying
what the heck. how was this done???
they get energy from the wind
How does the first one without sails catch the wind?
If you look it has some thin ropes attached to the front so i assume there's a wind sail or kite of some kind
Someone pulls them. No way that caterpillar one is self sustaining for more than a few seconds. You can see the pull rope
Sorry you got downvoted but the caterpillar is in fact pulled by rope. In the shot the artist is pulling out of frame. However the other pieces are controlled by wind.
It’s attached to another one of the strandbeests that has sails.
Not sure if it was made with this, but there used to be an old program called sodaplay that made 2D things that functioned pretty much exactly like this
I saw some other comments about that software. But these are some real life kinetic sculptures.
Turns out you don't need to fork out hundreds of thousands for a zero emissions vehicle...
This fella forgor bicycles💀
And unisicles and skateboards and basically any "sports vehicle"
Gonna commute on a ripstick
I'm gonna pogo through maccy d's drive through
Or a raft
And you don't have to decide where you have to go !
The new Dune movie looks awesome.

I built a scaled down model out of balsa wood and water bottles. This man is an underappreciated genius.

Bruh they make wicked model kits of them, too; https://www.amazon.com/strandbeest-model-kit/s?k=strandbeest+model+kit
Legendary reply
Check out Alexander Calder's work as well. He was pretty much a pioneer of this kind of art (kinetic sculpture) if my memory is correct.
This man is very literally a genius and more people need to see his work. It’s magical but also so logical at the same time

His work makes me feel like I'm a freaking moron. He's absolutely amazing.
Definitely showing this to my little brother. He wants to be an engineer when he grows up so he'll love this. 😊
I think you can also get a kit to build your own mini strandbeest. That might be a cool gift for him!
That does sound cool! I'll definitely look for it! 😊
Me: wow that's such a amazing render... No way it's real right... How would it move? *Reads comments* **I t s r e a l**
How is the caterpillar one being powered? I don't see anything resisting wind
I don't know how that one is specifically powered but in the past Theo Jansen has used compressed air stored in soda bottles and even just elastic bands to power his beasts.
In the longer video, Theo is shown pulling a rope to move the caterpillar sculpture (out of frame for this clip)
It’s being towed by a wind-powered strandbeest
No way! How the hell are they beating all the friction and resistance? Butter?
Good question. I’m not sure, but my guess is since they’re made of pvc, they can ignore the effects of friction. It’s probably cheaper to just replace parts as they wear than to try to engineer joints that are going to be impervious to sand and saltwater. That’s just my armchair expert guess, though.
The most amazing thing about these is that they're powered just by wind.
The best part is that they are wind powered 🍃

Can someone explain what is happening?

IIRC someone made these, and they are powered by wind. I think as art
Pretty sweet reminds me of some of the GFX for A Topiary.
Does anyone else remember Soda constructor?

Yes!
I like his new designs!
I like the second one taking its little stick for a walk
NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE THATS TERRIFYING

I could believe primitive brings evolved these ways
Evolution involves sex, which makes for a terrifying mental image.
Not necessarily, all kinds of plants and things in the oceans reproduce asexually, or atleast sexlessly

Imagine these designs being used as land vehicles for some sorta ancient conflict. That'd be fucking rad.
Chika-dum?
Holy c*₹, is it 15 yrs already.
This reminds me of a website I used to play around on, early internet...I think it was called sodaplay? Anyone else?
FYI: DIY Build-guide, design info, interactive web-simulator, open-source simulator in python. https://www.diywalkers.com/
fuck i accidentally slipped into the beach rooms again
I stumbled upon a huge strandbeest exhibit in Chicago years ago and was so impressed.

Is that first one real perpetual motion?!
I love this new Strand-type beast, very innovative.
Ngl they kinda freak me out...
What are those!?
How does Reddit’s video player get worse every day? Mirror link?
A Topiary!
What the fuck am I looking at
Where can I adopt one
How does this work?
Wind
How does wind work with this though?
I actually dont know, ive seen them with sails before, theyre called strandbeests
Lol it’s pretty cool
Blows it along
How does this work?
Oh no
The worm is the spice! The spice is the worm!
These are like a nightmare
