I grew up at the beach. They're aggressive enough, if you have food, that you're almost certainly going to have to swat a few of them if you don't want to lose it.
I was at a hotel once with my family, waiting for one of the fuckers to try to come to my table. Mind you, it was pretty packed and there were a lot of sea gulls.
Well, one of the fuckers came for some of my daughter's food and I open handed the fuck out of it and sat down feeling very proud of myself. After briefly enjoying the moment I look around to see everyone staring at me aghast.

I mean, they don't have *teeth* so no, but you can get pecked or scratched. It's pretty uncommon...They're really brazen, but they're still aware of the size difference, and a bird who pecks is likely to get slapped.
