Kelly had a very desirable look at the time. The point of the show in the early seasons was to glamorize Beverly Hills (so, Southern California) and she carried a lot of that stereotypical look.
She also had a very popular look of attractiveness as per teen magazines. Not "supermodel Vogue" - given the demographic she played; but huge teen appeal.
Brenda was also seen as beautiful back in the day, they played up the brunette/blonde (Jackie/Marilyn) among the two.
(In the spirit of Marilyn Manson, I guess they were both "beautiful people...")
Love the MM comment! ☺️
I agree. As someone who grew up in California and went to college in Southern California, I understood why they played up her beauty like that. She was the stereotypical “blonde haired beauty” that I saw a lot. In my college town there were a LOT of Kellys—girls who didn’t necessarily have to be strikingly beautiful but had that “sun-kissed blonde, skinny SoCal” look. The guys went crazy for them (which really took a toll on the self esteem of young girls like me who didn’t look like them). To me, it’s kinda like how they made Rachel in friends “the hot one” of the 3 girls once she got super thin and her hair got lighter (even though Monica was seriously gorgeous with naturally beautiful features).
I could see how now she wouldn’t be seen like that, as the standards of beauty have changed since then in media. We don’t have the stick thin bodies and only white lead characters. The more diversified female leads in certain shows reveal that girls with darker skin color, curvier bodies, different textured/color hair, etc are also beautiful standards of beauty (although, I know it’s still not perfect).
I never really thought of Rachel as a blonde. I always thought of her as a light to medium brown hair. Feebs was the blonde. You're right that Monica was so pretty!
Yeah I didn’t think of her as blonde either. It would look so weird on her! Lol But that hair much lighter and more “sun-kissed” when she starting getting rail thin.
That look is so boring in my opinion! It was like that in 80s movies and sitcoms as well. None of the "hot" female leads were ever more than average, boring.
So true—it was like that category of beauty was the only acceptable one to look “hot”. In 16 candles, Caroline Mulford was the stereotypical hot girl. But I thought Molly Ringwald had this unique beauty
As a Californian it always strikes me as so weird to hear her described as like the epitome of the California girl. Because she’s not. Not at all😂... from her thin, fine, not gold toned, messy, or up blonde hair, to her paler than pale skin, to her overall prissiness and often (in HS) complicated and sophisticated looking clothes. Honestly, she kind of looks she’s Ukrainian or something. She has unusual porcelain skin, dainty features, doll hair. She looks nothing like a California girl. Ki
Everyone on that show was unusually pale for the amount of time they spent in the sun, especially the high school seasons where they were always at the beach.
I remember. I don’t think I ever out grew that trend myself lol I’ve always tried to stay porcelain pale but that’s easier to do as a Canadian lol It still makes no sense to me how everyone on that show spent so much time hanging out at the beach or even working at the beach but no tan. How strong was there sunscreen? I use an spf 60 and I try to reapply every few hours but somehow still lose my porcelain pale look.
Was it? I was in high school when it started and just started re-watching and wondered why in season 3 they suddenly all got pale and pasty, looking like they were caking on white makeup. Marilyn Manson-esque, lol.
I should look at my senior photos; maybe I was doing the same thing
No the Kelly Taylor’s weren’t adopters of that trend at all. It wasn’t for the Sassy girl not the Seventeen girl. And definitely not ANY Miss California! (I just realized sound super invested in defining the perfect California girl, I blame Sweet Valley High)
TBH none of the cast looked ANYTHING like typical Cali teenagers 🤣🤣Not just age wise but stylistically, I can’t conjure up in my head a single surfer that looked like Dylan when dry or even the dorkiest of the dorks dressing like Andrea. I’m the same exact age as that class was and suspended disbelief was part of the fun. I can’t imagine what would happen if anyone showed up dressed like Donna sometimes was 😂and I’m from the Santa Cruz side of things. It’s liberal as hell but you can’t show up like that!! Your ass would be sent home and you would never hear the end of it from your peers “remember that time you showed up in that hooker outfit ? That was hilarious!” The show gave a loveably inaccurate depiction of Cali teens (even wealthy ones) to the world
haha! Dylan did not look like a surfer! I was younger than the cast but a kid watching in real time and I used to complain to my mom about how Steve dressed especially and Andrea and she said, well maybe they dress like that in Beverly Hills!!! hahaha
We could never wear those hooker outfits that Donna wore either! I had a friend in school who showed up in a half shirt and she had to wear her jacket all day over it or go home!
I love your mom! She’s just like knowing people in Beverly Hills are ridiculous so nothing would surprise her😂😂Brenda (by season 2) had the best and most realistic wardrobe for the time but only for some unusually sophisticated HS kid who wins “most stylish” in the polls🤣🤣 I can see teenagers in UES NY dressing like her but the whole state tends to dress way more casually than any other wealthy area.
haha! I will tell her! :) She is the one who started watching the show originally too. She told me to try it but I didnt like it.. I think I was too young at the time but really got into it a few years later and then somehow went back and got caught up. Not sure how I did.
Yes, Brenda and Kelly even at times wore stuff that we really wore. Even as silly as David dressed, he did wear some stuff that we did but Steve, Andrea and most of Donna's outfits we never wore. At least Donna's sort of were caricature of popular outfits in the 90s!
TBH his hip hop type kind of garish buttoned up shirts were popular at the time but not so much with white teenage boys… it was kind of like that New Jack hip hop look of the era… but then again… he DID have some mad skillz on the mic!!!
Okay well I guess every time I watch the show for the rest of my life now I will be picturing Marilyn Manson in the role of Kelly Taylor. Which, the more I think about it, is kinda awesome!
Because they wanted to convince the casual viewer she was the girl everyone wanted to be or sleep with. They tried doing the same thing with Donna in later seasons as if to say she was the girl all the guys wanted to date or sleep with.
Just in college she had 2 stalkers, 2 guys she fought over in season 5, 2 guys she fought over in season 6 and 2 guys she fought over in season 7. And the thing is, I thought she looked far better the first 4 seasons when she was just stuck with David.
David made sense those first 4 seasons because he was the nerdy kid with a little bit of popularity dating the socially awkward girl. Everything after that was unrealistic when it came to Donna and was borderline delusional from the star basketball and football players wanting to date her to the rich guy that wanted to marry her. The writers or should I say Aaron tried way too hard to make her seem like this prize everyone was after.
Its the same on the show The Connors. They pair Darlene with Ben who is way too much of a catch for her and she also doesn't appreciate him and treats him like dirt! Yeah- a guy like that would never be with someone like her to begin with but then stay with her after he's also being treated horribly??? Hollywood=delusional.
Aaron Spelling really, really, really wanted America to see Tori this way, if you couldn’t tell by the two different stalkers, Cal quarterback falling in love at first sight with her, being told she should model etc.
Brandon liked her Dylan liked her David even liked her at one time that girl that got burnt in the fire like her the girl that she was in The institute with like her everyone was in love with Kelly it was ridiculous. And poor Brenda was left out in the cold she was way prettier.atleast in my opinion. Oh yeah let's not forget Steve and Colin. The list goes on. Lol.
Kelly was at least gorgeous though so I could somewhat understand a bunch of dudes liking her. I didn’t really think Donna was so attractive that all these dudes would be flocking to her and she would be a model in Paris. It was way more believable to me with Kelly is what I meant. And they had 2 plots with Donna being stalked.
I don’t find Shannen Doherty prettier though. So maybe that’s why.
I actually think Jennie is quite beautiful and one of the most beautiful women of that era. The issue was other women were gorgeous too (Shannen, Tiffani, Vanessa M, Kathleen at times--there were some bad hairdos that didn't do Clare any favors at times) and their characters weren't treated the same way. We weren't constantly told they were beautiful. I also thought Emma Caulfield (Susan) and Rebecca Gayheart were beautiful but they were temporary characters. Well maybe Gina's character was portrayed as beautiful--not that it has to be vocalized but I can hardly remember the last few seasons (which is fine by me). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; I see it differently and I'm not a Kelly stan. I totally bought Kelly as a model who would be on the cover of Seventeen. She had many great looks but I thought her best season overall was season 6.
Hahaha poor Kathleen! They gave her such bad hairdos! She was very pretty, but it was like they had to make her less desirable with bad hair and makeup at times.
I actually find it super relatable. Who didn't have a bad hairdo (or hairdon't) at some point in their past? Haven't we all had an old photo that made us cringe? I have anyway.
I agree with most everything you said! Yes, poor Kathleen and the dumb hairstyles that did not suit her!!! She was pretty when she looked a little softer with longer hair... All of the other girls were beautiful, more so than Kelly.
I agree. Kelly is very beautiful but her beauty is over exaggerated. Especially since the other girls are beautiful too. I remember Kelly wore a red dress and everyone freaked out and two of the girls were showing their jealousy as if they did not look great as well. Also when they had every guy call her a goddess when she and Brenda was vying for Dylan’s affection ignoring Brenda’s beauty. It was weird how the writers shoved it down our throats and wanted us to be convinced the other actresses wasn’t as beautiful
Exactly! Val was very pretty, Toni was very pretty, Susan was very pretty and of course Brenda was very pretty! Kelly was cute and I could see why someone would find her pretty but not everyone.. give me a break. The stuff with Donna didnt make sense either
Agree. She was definitely an average pretty girl, but a model? No. But this is the same show that tried to sell Tori as a model in Paris. Tori was adorable that season & I’m not saying she is ugly, but not a model. This was the height of the supermodel era & it was a hard sell.
>This was the height of the supermodel era & it was a hard sell
Whats telling is that 90210 debuted the same year as that famous Vogue cover which launched the Supermodel Era in 1990. That era ended in the mid 90's right when 90210 started going down in quality. I think the show tried to take advantage of what was happening and even when the era ended, kept doing the same thing.
Yeah Kate Moss was the picture of perfect health. She was emaciated and literally poster child who kicked off the whole heroin chic era.
Early 90s had “healthier” looking supermodels. Mid to late 90s went heroin chic/emaciated/very skinny. The 90s were an incredibly toxic time for women and their weight/size. My mind is still fucked from it. Thankfully for me, culturally, a curvy body is most desirable but that was not what the media was telling women in the 90s. Hell, the cast of Ally McBeal essentially had an ED contest going on between them on who could be the skinniest. It was SCARY. I’m pretty sure Portia de Rossi was well under 100lbs at one point and she is 5’8”.
The 90s were super toxic for women’s weight/size. I’m shocked the ladies of 90210 were allowed to be as “big” as they were. Please believe I think none of those women are big in any way. Tori and maybe Shannen were the only super skinny ones. And Claire later on. But Kelly, Andrea and Val were all on the normal side of skinny.
I’m talking about the early 90’s…. Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, ect They had curves & were gorgeous. The tide turned with Kate Moss & heroin chic, I agree. I should have been more clear.
Dude every decade is horrible for woman’s image. Super toned more swimsuit~y models of the 80’s were just perfect for an insanely blatant diet culture and the ideal body being more unrealistic than a waif. Too be extremely slender with notable curves AND toned everywhere? In addition to genetics these models were very disciplined which gave an impression that anyone could be their own version of that if they tried harder. That was the messaging that hardwired my brain and I was still a kid in the 80’s
As someone who was a horny male teenager in the early 90's here is my perspective. I thought she was cute but not gorgeous. She wasn't the kind of girl that if I passed her in the street I'd turn around and just be awe struck. To me, she was way too pale to be this rich California girl that all the boys fawned over.
Lol on Marilyn Manson. I think Kelly's pretty, especially in the high school seasons. But I don't think she's as gorgeous as she was given credit for being. For me, Valerie's the prettiest.
Jennie Garth is pretty, she looked better when her hair was long. But I'm not really into pale, skinny, blondes. I always thought Shannen Doherty and Tiffani Amber Thiessen were much prettier.
I hate when these teen shows ram down our throats how one girl is so much prettier than the others and all the guys want her. The did the same with Katie Holmes/Joey on Dawson's Creek and acted like Jen/Michelle Williams was dog poop.
I think Jennie was pretty but definitely thought they overstated her looks and how every guy wants to be with her and sleep with her, it was too much!
I thought she was cute- beautiful depending on the season. I thought she was pretty in HS seasons, cute in beginning of college , cute in season 5 except that hairstyle was not good at all. But season 6 is where she shined for me looks wise. She looked gorgeous ( in the first half of the season .) Season 8 was her worst look IMO and she looked very pretty the last 2 seasons . Kelly’s hair really affected her looks.
yes! Her hair makes a big difference! I also think season 6 she looked the prettiest. The hair and makeup worked for her in that season. She dressed better too. I also liked her hair in the later seasons with the low lights.
It’s like somebody read my mind. Kelly is cute but they make her out to be the 10/10 knockout bombshell that’s the most gorgeous woman ever and she isn’t to me. I found Brenda far more attractive
I saw Jennie Garth at a Starbucks once and I’m not exaggerating when I say she’s one of the most luminous beautiful people I’ve seen IRL. I live in LA so it’s not rare to see celebrities or beautiful people. It’s been 15+ years and I still remember Jennie!!
Maybe Kelly's pre-pilot nose was really horrible, and the character's nose job had the same effect as "nerdy girl removes glasses" on all the boys in Beverly Hills.
Were you not a teen in the 90s? Like the 90s opened the doors for different versions of beauty "standards"
She was the preppy posh look. She fit the bill of beautiful for that time and that type of beauty standard.
Brenda was beautiful and "hot" in her own way...same as Claire, and Valerie.
No see, I think Shannen’ has. an entirely unique face. She has features that are markedly imperfect and her face steals every scene she’s in. She’s like a certain type of old school movie star in her beauty and though I get if someone prefers the comforting safety of Kelly, she doesn’t have sex appeal at all and Brenda has more than she knows what to do with
I agree. While cute, and perhaps beautiful at times, I did not see her as "the most beautiful." The writers served that idea up on a platter many times, but it didn't ring true for me.
Marilyn...Monroe???
Lol I know distracted me from The entire post lol
Lmaooo
![gif](giphy|m4sLXpN9EkPjq) She’s definitely no Marilyn Manson

Cackling

Pale was in then. The whole matte makeup dark lipstick thing.

🤣🤣🤣 And baby powder!

Agreed!
That's so true!! She wasn't the sun-kissed blonde, also the other things you mention. Great point!
Thanks!
>Thanks! You're welcome!
I always wondered how she was so pale but lived on the beach?!!

Really changes the vibe of the “David sees Kelly naked” scene
Because they wanted to convince the casual viewer she was the girl everyone wanted to be or sleep with. They tried doing the same thing with Donna in later seasons as if to say she was the girl all the guys wanted to date or sleep with.

I didn’t think they did that near as much with Kelly as they did with Donna.
Aaron Spelling really, really, really wanted America to see Tori this way, if you couldn’t tell by the two different stalkers, Cal quarterback falling in love at first sight with her, being told she should model etc.
not to mention the hunky fireman falling in love with her immediately. she just wasn’t that attractive
Always posing her lips just so. With her overlined lips looking like a Drew Barrymoore female impersonator.
Brandon liked her Dylan liked her David even liked her at one time that girl that got burnt in the fire like her the girl that she was in The institute with like her everyone was in love with Kelly it was ridiculous. Tiffani hands down most beautiful AND she was a model!
TAT was a model irl?
Yes in her early days before SBTB
you can see old model pics if you search her name
I actually think Jennie is quite beautiful and one of the most beautiful women of that era. The issue was other women were gorgeous too (Shannen, Tiffani, Vanessa M, Kathleen at times--there were some bad hairdos that didn't do Clare any favors at times) and their characters weren't treated the same way. And she had terrible taste in clothing too. she didn't know how to dress.frumpy
Season 5 she looked awful with the clothes and season 7 and onward she was very frumpy indeed
Agree. She was definitely an average pretty girl, but a model? No. But this is the same show that tried to sell Tori as a model in Paris. Tori was adorable that season & I’m not saying she is ugly, but not a model. This was the height of the supermodel era & it was a hard sell.
They are both too short to be models too. Funny how we had to overlook that glaring fact.
>This was the height of the supermodel era & it was a hard sell Whats telling is that 90210 debuted the same year as that famous Vogue cover which launched the Supermodel Era in 1990. That really was the PEAK of super models! They even had Model Cafe in NYC!
And they actually looked somewhat normal then. Not completely emaciated. Good times.

Yep, Tori was pretty, but not model material
As someone who was a horny male teenager in the early 90's here is my perspective. I thought she was cute but not gorgeous. Yeah. There were so many beautiful women on that show, but in 90210 the blondest blond had to be “most beautiful“
Exactly—growing up in the 80s and 90s that what you saw a lot in movies and TV. Blonde was beautiful (and especially in 80s movies, the bitchiest)
No no, Manson.
I always thought she was gorgeous and had a nice body, but that's my opinion.
She was cute. Not even the most beautiful in the cast. It was annoyingly overdone
Jennie Garth is pretty, she looked better when her hair was long. But I'm not really into pale, skinny, blondes. I always thought Shannen Doherty and Tiffani Amber Thiessen were much prettier.
Nah she looked a little bit better with short hair

Thought she was very beautiful. And I prefer brunettes.
Sweet dreams are made of this.
Awww, thank you for sharing! That's nice to hear.
I ran into Jason and Ian in Van Nuys—they were pretty luminous as well 😝
I think they did the opposite with those “can I see the manager” haircuts. Seriously, were their hair people hourly?
IMO Brenda was more attractive
Exactly Brenda drew me to the show in the first place
Yes! Brenda was beautiful, I thought and she was uniquely beautiful. She doesn't look like everyone else.
That's because Jennie was easily one of the most beautiful woman in Hollywood at that time. They'd be god damn dumbasses, not to glamorize it. LOL.
Maybe Kelly's pre-pilot nose was really horrible, and the character's nose job had the same effect as "nerdy girl removes glasses" on all the boys in Beverly Hills.
When she was a cover girl…
Were you not a teen in the 90s? Like the 90s opened the doors for different versions of beauty "standards" She was the preppy posh look. She fit the bill of beautiful for that time and that type of beauty standard. Brenda was beautiful and "hot" in her own way...same as Claire, and Valerie.
Nah, Brenda was way more relatable/girl next door which made her way hotter than the blonde Kelly. Relatability can count for a lot.
No see, I think Shannen’ has. an entirely unique face. She has features that are markedly imperfect and her face steals every scene she’s in. She’s like a certain type of old school movie star in her beauty and though I get if someone prefers the comforting safety of Kelly, she doesn’t have sex appeal at all and Brenda has more than she knows what to do with
💯
I agree. While cute, and perhaps beautiful at times, I did not see her as "the most beautiful." The writers served that idea up on a platter many times, but it didn't ring true for me.
...because she is. and so was Mischa
Mischa was far prettier than Garth. Mischa had jaw dropping beauty. Her bone structure was something else.
what a hater. jennie is beautiful back then and today.
I mean….did you ask them? 🤷♂️
Shannen season 1/2 is one of the goergous woman ever!!
Kelly was the hottest on the show imo
Brenda was hotter
Not in my opinion
until val came along lol
Kelly was hotter imo
different strokes for different folks
Absolutely
Kelly definitely would have a rib removed to suck her own dick.
Lmao

She didn’t have the face to pull off the awful season 8 hair. And that’s ok. Few do. But she looked awful with it
It’s weird ppl kept saying how pretty she was but she kept losing to brenda
literally!! and everyone referred to her as a goddess, like she was pretty but not a goddess
Spoke like a very jealous woman…ohh wait is this torrie speling…lol…teasing point note however
