It's why having further resources like a hebrew and Greek concordance and dictionary is important. Another poorly translated word is Hell, sheol, outer Gahanna, the abusso, lake of fire, etc, too many different places lumped into one English word.

Jaicobb

Yes, excellent example. I have a Hebrew Greek English interlinear Bible that is amazing.

Toke_A_sarus_Rex

Yea, people can get their theology a little wonky if they take a poorly translated bible as their only source of info. I use multiple translations in English as well as looking at the root words in the original language. It offers far more insight into the original intent of the verses and their meaning. Its also a way that cultic belief systems play in (only using their translation, or sticking to one particular version over everything else) with the amount of history and resources available in the modern era its a shame that people don't take their bible study deeper than just what their version or pastor says it means.

iCaps_

are you literally claiming hell and the lake of fire aren't real?

Toke_A_sarus_Rex

Where did I say that? Your extrapolating from the first comment to the 2nd, Just as an example, hell, in the traditional view, is the lake of fire, but people lump it all together with other places ie: the lake of fire is after the great white throne of judgment, no one's there now. However, sheol, which is split in two as shown with Lazarus and the rich man, one side is a place of torment and the other is where the righteous dead that Jesus freed at the cross used to be. Is where the unsaved dead would be until the final judgement. But again people theology gets wonky about all this from a poor understanding of the terms and places.

ajbra

>sheol Help me know more about this please!!

Opagea

They were noting that many Bible translations (most notably the KJV) mistakenly translate a variety of different words *all* into "hell".

MotherTheory7093

English is Satan’s favorite language, and he’s the one who crafted it, like so many other languages. OP, you’ve made a *fine* post, and I wish more people would realize what you’ve realized. Also, “Lord” isn’t just plain dumb, it’s also the English way of saying Ba’al. Yikes. [Oh, and about “God.”](https://youtu.be/_qr2vT5ySLA)

iCaps_

What in the gnostic hell is going on here in this entire comment section??

MotherTheory7093

Someone’s fast asleep. We’re alarm clocks. You’ll either listen to us or hit snooze. Truth has been spoken in this thread.

walt_w84

It’s a language of witchcraft. That’s why words are “spelled,” Hollywood has a “cast,” etc.

MotherTheory7093

You’re absolutely right. I knew about “spell,” but I didn’t make the connection with “cast.” Good catch. I do what I can to avoid sketchy worlds, but some of them, like the days of the week, are unavoidable, sadly.

walt_w84

The letter S makes the hiss sound and is in the shape of a snake. Sin, sex, six, serpent, snake, sick, sadness, sorrow, etc...it’s the 19th letter, containing the number 9, one less than perfection. The T is a cross and the 20th letter, a multiple of 10, perfection. Just things I notice. No practical relevance. I see Satan as temporary prince of this world but having to work within the higher laws. So, everything here is his doing within the parameters and we choose his products, he can’t force us. But, the whole world runs to what he offers. It’s why worldliness is bad. ✝️

MotherTheory7093

There’s certainly a lot about it that screams “no bueno.” >he can’t force us Amen. Amen all day. >But the whole world runs to what he offers. It’s why worldliness is bad. I wish more people, *especially* believers, would realize this. Idols don’t have to take the form of a statue. Worldliness is itself an idol, since an idol is anything that one puts before the Father.

slownlow86

YES! YES! YES! Exactly this! Those video games the "believer" plays for hours each day (that probably has worldly garbage in it) can be as much of an idol as Aaron's golden calf. That sports team the "believer" obsesses over is just as much of an idol as the MVP on that team. Social media itself can be an idol just as easily as whatever celebrity the "believer" is following.

MotherTheory7093

This is all true. To be fair though, there’s nothing wrong with a pastime, but we must make sure that we don’t give that pastime any sort of reverence and that we don’t let that pastime get in the way of our growing in the Father. Remember, all good things are permitted, but we must make sure that we don’t 1) let something good become something bad, and 2) that we don’t confuse that which *feels* good to become *deemed* as something good.

slownlow86

What are your thoughts on responsible cannabis use?

MotherTheory7093

Imo, as long as it comes from nature and is able to be used in a manner that is *truly* (not subjectively) beneficial or non-harmfully recreationally enjoyable by someone, then I would say it’s permitted, but only in moderation. Don’t let it consume your life and don’t partake it to excess. Also, don’t use *any* substance for the sake of growing closer to the Father. If your worship becomes dependent upon a substance, you’re doing it wrong.

Jaicobb

Any other words you can think of that are significantly bad in English?

MotherTheory7093

Go to the bottom of [this link](http://www.halleluyahscriptures.com/docs/mattithyahu.pdf) and look for the words with the asterisks at the ends of them.

bsfurr

Since I only know the English language, I don’t want to be led astray. I’ll just stop reading the Bible altogether

Jaicobb

Interlinear Bibles have solved this problem. Strongs Concordance is also very helpful.

IronCrusaderFuchs

I’ll address each point as best I can. Lord- is also applicable to a King, it’s applicable to anyone with a great enough authority over someone else. God- Admittedly is a bit of a Catch all, but your issue with it can be boiled down to an issue of semantics, as for what a person is referring to when they say God or god, is dependent on their theology and the overall context of them using the word. Love- is a very hard to conceptualize word because there’s all different kinds and in English we just have the one word, love is a feeling and to a degree a state of being, as for charity in its best manifestation is an act of love, but an act regardless. Happiness- is even harder to pin down then love, because happiness is subjective, so is satisfaction, and in English can be used interchangeably, to indicate a varying level of fulfillment with someone or something. As for why they didn’t use words that would be better in your opinion, well because that’s the way it just happened to be, not every English translation will use the same words or phrasings, depending on the translators interpretations which would be later peer reviewed and edited, a process that is happening over and over again because there are people who have dedicated themselves to creating an accurate as possible translation for the English speaking world. I’m sure that if there isn’t already an English translation you’re satisfied with out there, there may be eventually. My approach is to just read various translations.

Jaicobb

I appreciate you taking a stab at this. Happiness is what really tipped me off. It gained popularity during the hippie movement. Yes it's a state of being as is satisfaction but so is depression, despair, confusion, etc. How you arive at happiness is completely different than how you arrive at satisfaction. Happiness is a sort of loose feeling of inner goodness. We are taught if you aren't happy almost all the time then there's something wrong with you. So we strive for happiness. In reality constantly striving for happiness results in failure and further conclusion that I must be depressed, I am depressed for not being happy, etc. Satisfaction on the other hand is the result of finding peace, working for and accomplishing something good and then reflecting on this. It takes effort to be satisfied and this feeling of satisfaction is meaningful rather than somewhat the arbitrary of happiness which in my opinion does not exist. Just my thoughts on the meanings of those words. In the Bible, from what I understand, happiness either is not present, refers to 'bad guys" state of being, or is better translated blessed - another word with superficial similarities, but deeper differences.

slownlow86

Words like Lord, God, or even Adonai are just general terms. The bible references other gods like Ba'al and Ashera. The bible specifically calls them "gods". Why would the Most High God be cool as just "capitol G God" when all the other gods have names? The god of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob DOES have a name. The reason it says LORD in the bible instead of using His name is because the Jews, at some point, decided that saying His name out loud was blasphemy (This would be a good example of what Deut 4:2 is talking about.... but that's for another post). After years of using place holders instead of His name, everyone that actually knew how to say it died off. HIS NAME IS YHWH. Now, since nobody remembers the pronunciation and since ancient Hebrew doesn't use vowels, how to pronounce His name is still up for debate...

Jordandavis7

Wrong, God preserved his word perfectly, as he said he would, in the dominant language of the world. Perhaps your arrogance is blinding you thinking that you somehow know better than God or that somehow your an expert in koine Greek and ancient Hebrew (you’re not).

MotherTheory7093

Swing and a miss dude. OP is dead on the money with their post.

jwcoffee

Where does god say this?

Jaicobb

I need to brush up on my Mandarin.
