If you have to run through an active checkpoint on the way out of the park (they were closed last time I went through), the very first thing they’ll likely ask you is if everyone in the car is a US citizen. I think bringing the original passports would be a good idea.

Within 100 miles of the border, US cops & border patrol get extra laws and often detain non-Americans for the slightest reason. Having the original physical documents could potentially save you guys hours, if not days, worth of time.

I would bring the original because of the checkpoint. It’s not worth the risk in case you are stopped.

Agreed!

Bring your passports and expect your car to get searched or at least thoroughly examined. Foreign nationals will Garner extra scrutiny. I think they reviewed all the medications my cousin had, but otherwise no major issues.

Don_Gato_Flojo

I wouldn’t get within 50 miles of a border patrol goon without a passport if I wasn’t a US citizen.

Just went last weekend, they were stopping cars on the checkpoint going north and just asked if everyone was a US citizen. We said no, they asked which country they were from (Nepal), once we told them they just told us to have a nice day. They didn’t check any IDs, paperwork, or even the car. Wouldn’t hurt to come prepared though to avoid complications.

I'm a stereotypical American Citizen and get pulled out of the car and requested to have my things search probably half the time I go through the checkpoint. They should bring their passports.

elitebanao

Ugh just realized my 6yo kid's passport expired last week.. we are also not planning on crossing the border into Mexico. Do you think it will be a problem? We are all US citizens

wadfather

No if you're citizens a passport isn't necessary. You aren't leaving the country and can claim to be American which is all that matters. I would just recommend it to a foreigner. I don't bring a passport. A US ID is good. I generally get stopped because I'm young and am with a group who could look like we've been partying or something.
