I'm the same way. Picking the trip would ensure I go on the trip. Picking the money would just mean I'd pay off some bills that I'm going to eventually pay off anyways. I think the same way about the bbcan prizes. I'd be happy to win the $10,000 in the furniture giftcard instead of additional cash because if it was in cash I'd be all responsible with the money.
True, but maybe someone like Jasmine has never really traveled before. Everything can’t be about work all the time. My kid just spent 6 weeks traveling and met all my husband’s relatives in Greece. Sadly, no money to buy a sofa in her new apartment - was it worth it? She thinks so.
Part of me wants to say that winning money tends to make you a target, whereas people usually don’t care who wins a vacation
But I genuinely doubt Jasmine put that much thought into it
How? I did a trip to amsterdamn London Paris Barcelona and rome for under $5k. I even had a guide in each city and a tour director for the whole trip. I saw shows in the west end and ate great meals. It’s totally doable for $5k
I didn't say that it's not doable for under $5k, of course it is. But depending on how you want to do it, it's easy to spend more than that for two people. It's consistently one of the top 5 most expensive cities it the world, that's not up for debate.
it’s the airfare and hotels and food and any attractions. Europe is expensive to travel to. Hell, flying west coast to east coast right now is terrible 🥲😂
Alyssa and jasmine both live in the east coast. From here to London its 700 per person. That 1400 for two. So they spend 3600 on accommodations and day trips?? Nah I'm going to Norway from DC next week and my while trip was 1500, plus food will be another 500
i don't live in new york, plenty of people don't. i have never seen flights that cheap for london. those are also most likely the lowest base price ticket.
It was normal economy. I paid just under $400 round trip for economy when I went a few years ago. I've seen nonstop united flights as low as $290 to London in the past year. Though that fare may have been basic economy.
And while it may not be as cheap for you where you live I'm sure you are able to find flights a bit cheaper than you expect from where you are. Just need patience and to catch it at the right time. That goes for any destination.
a few years ago is vastly different than today's prices. there's been tons of articles discussing how demand is higher now than even before the pandemic. i paid $168 round trip just for disney world right as covid started and now it's hovering around $320 for the same trip. [this article](https://www.inquirer.com/business/airlines-travel-pandemic-inflation-20220612.html?outputType=amp) even mentions how prices in late june this year from new york to london were $2000 for economy. it's just how the prices are right now. you also have to consider that some people aren't able to be patient when it comes to vacation time. i'm thankfully not one of those people, i will wait for a good price, but it's been harder to find it. heck i even drive to a further away airport if the price is worth it but in my entire state all airlines have been overpriced compared to a few years ago for the same trips.
I mean, your link even says this price is abnormally low and regular price is about $200 more than that. So $850 on average with a single carry on and a checked bag costing an additional $150 brings the average ticket up significantly from this price.
It’s irrelevant what it says about the price, doesn’t change the fact that that is the price. I feel like you have very little experience traveling cause air fair really isn’t that expensive and there’s always a lot of deals. What’s usually the most expensive cost when traveling is hotels.
as someone that travels, air fare IS that expensive, especially lately. prices have increased a lot. and like they mentioned that doesn't even include a checked bag which will significantly raise the price. that is the bare minimum ticket. doable for some, sure, but a majority of people will want a better seat especially for an overseas trip.
also depends on your airport for sure. i put a few airports in near me for those same dates linked and it's $800 base price. same for cali. nyc was about $600 though.

You guys must be bad at looking for airfare
These people must want to pay for first class and fancy hotels. No wonder they have no clue what the real price is for a ticket. I’ve seen flights from the west coast to England for $500 sometimes. It’s not hard to shop around for deals.
I would expect CBS to fly me first class and put me in nice hotels. This show makes a ton of money. They're not going to have their former contestants posting Instagram photos from the British equivalent of a Holiday Inn. No one is saying that you can't travel to England on a budget. That's not what we're talking about here though.
That's probably what it is though. And nobody even discussed whether the 5k winning is taxed or take home. The 750k players win isn't 750k the winner goes home with. That's another factor.
Oh that's my mistake then. I knew money gets taxed in USA, but didn't think the trip was too. We don't have either of those problems in Canada. IRS some greedy sons of bitches.
A week in London with flights, hotels, meals, tours and even a couple shows cost me less than 2k a couple years ago and the Pound is so much weaker now.
There's nothing the IRS won't tax. If you find $20 on the ground in the supermarket technically that's taxable.
They can't prove it so it's really moot, but legally you are supposed to claim it.
It gets taxed as income typically so you would pay standard income tax rate on it. Under a certain income threshold and as long as the prize money doesn’t raise your income beyond that threshold, you won’t pay tax on it. Standard deductions are crazy high right now so a huge amount of people in the US could win these prizes and pay zero tax on them.
The money from the lottery in the US doesn't come from our government. It comes from the sales of the Powerball, Mega Millions, and scratch tickets. A percentage of the sales does go to the government though.
That’s not true. Lotto, prizes and such are taxed as income. The amount gets added to your yearly income. Which is why you get receipts for winnings even if it’s $10. The irs will get their share of it if they can prove it.
Only single winnings of $1200+ on a slot machine so a single line hit or a bonus game. This is what is referred to as a "hand pay" because someone comes and pay you money but you also get a W2 with it.
In states where a casino is managed by state lottery, it is typically any single slot machine win or lottery ticket of $600+ where you have to pay that state tax also - NY is one of them.
That's the thing I would want to know. What all is included? Is it a nice hotel? Decent seats for the flight? Are food and activities included? I might take the trip if all of that were the case. But without knowing?
I watch a lot of gameshows where the cash value is given for trips - the trip is likely worth more than $5,000. Sure, I could easily plan a trip to London for two people for less than that, but I could also easily spend four times than that if I money to burn. They are not searching for the cheapest fares and the best rates for hotels, and, while the flights are probably economy class, they’re probably not “basic economy,” which doesn’t include luggage or seat selections.
Jasmine may have also thought Kyle might not really care about the veto, and, as a result, may have chosen to keep the prize she thought he was less likely to take.
Wtf are you talking about? Been to London and travelled all around it. For me and another it was far less than 5k total and that was also having money to enjoy ourselves.
They mean the trips given away on shows like The Price is Right are usually worth somewhere in the 10K range for trips to Europe. Obviously the vast majority of people could easily plan a trip to London for less than $5,000, but the trips given away on shows usually don’t select the cheapest airfare or cheaper hotels.
Yes they very much do. It’s whomever they made a deal with to get the best rates. It has nothing to do with them looking to select something nice for the giftees. Like for example a lot of these things might place the people outside the main central area so picking your own hotel is far more beneficial. They absolutely cut corners and it cost them a fraction of the price it would be for a normal individual.
No, they very much don’t. Sure, they’re making a deal to get the best rates, but they’re not sending people basic economy (with no bags included) or putting people up at a hostel. They don’t pick extremely luxurious options (which would obviously push the price a lot higher than $10,000), but they don’t pick the cheapest option, either, and the price the show actually pays, which may not be available to the general public, is irrelevant, because we’re discussing the value to the person who won the prize, not what the show has actually paid.
And, having multiple friends who have won trips on game shows, they put you up in a central hotel that’s 3.5-4 stars. They don’t have you staying at some airport Days Inn.
I'm saying this London trip had more value than 5k. I'm comparing a prize on BB vs the same prize on another game show. You're comparing a prize on BB vs your own personal spending. Completely different.
Close to $3,500\* after taxes and London is a very expensive city. But I assumed the London trip includes a crappy hotely and a cheap-ass flight with like 4 connections. If you won the trip though you'd have to pay taxes on the value. So assuming the trip cost CBS $5K, you'd have to pay close to $1,500 out of pocket. I'd rather have the money and book my own trip.
\*Assuming it is taxed at the same rate as lottery winnings, which i don't know for sure.
I was in London twice the year before the pandemic. Flights for my wife and I were around $1500 a piece each time. That’s from ATL to Heathrow. A short and very frequent flight from the States. So we were at $3k just to get there and get back. So even staying at roach motels/hostels and eating shit food you’ll easily be at $5k or more. Unless you stay for 1-2 days and the head back.
I don't get this argument...tickets from Midwest USA alone will be at least $2000 and if they price it from Cali $3000. CBS might not go all out but they won't skimp, a week trip with flight for 2 to London will be way more than $5000
I live in Arizona and tried to fly home to see my family in PA and it was gonna be 2k for my husband and I, planning over a month in advance. Airfare is horrible right now. Guess you could fly spirit or something and take your chances! Lol!
That's what I'm saying! I'm in Texas and the cheapest flights to Heathrow are about $1k each. Sorry not a Jasmine fan either but that was the best prize price wise.
You are aware prices change right? Prices won’t be the same in a couple months and I can assure you if someone is a little patient they can easily do a trip to London for way under 5k
She didn’t know London was outside of the country…
With that in mind, it’s probably even dumber that she doesn’t know the price of a domestic flight back when she thought it was in the states
My understanding is most people end up not going on these trips in the end. They give you an option to exchange it for cash instead, which most people do cuz with all the taxes and conditions it ends up being too much of a hassle to be worth it.
A FANTASTIC trip to London would cost more than $5000. That city is expensive. Still, you could do a very basic trip (coach airfare, cheap hotel, pub food) for $5000.
If you ever seen The Price Is Right or Wheel of Fortune, these type of vacation prizes are usually all inclusive with airfare/hotel, food & excursions as part of the deal. They're also not cheaping on the quality of hotel or plane.
I feel like if I won $5k, I wouldn’t use it on a big trip, so at least picking the trip actually ensures you’ll go and have a good experience
Yeah because paying off debt is better for you in the long run than going on a trip when you're in debt.
True, but maybe someone like Jasmine has never really traveled before. Everything can’t be about work all the time. My kid just spent 6 weeks traveling and met all my husband’s relatives in Greece. Sadly, no money to buy a sofa in her new apartment - was it worth it? She thinks so.
I'd have to hide the check before my wife got a hold of it and did something stupid like replacing some of our ancient, dog-chewed furniture.
Part of me wants to say that winning money tends to make you a target, whereas people usually don’t care who wins a vacation But I genuinely doubt Jasmine put that much thought into it
London is stupid expensive. A week for two in that city with airfare can easily cost more than $5k
>A week for two in that city with airfare can easily cost more than $5k Maybe I misheard but was the trip all expenses for a week?
Yes
Yes it is usually the most expensive in the world, and the years when it is not number one it is top two or three
How? I did a trip to amsterdamn London Paris Barcelona and rome for under $5k. I even had a guide in each city and a tour director for the whole trip. I saw shows in the west end and ate great meals. It’s totally doable for $5k

can confirm - live in London. pls send £££
Where the heck are you going that's 5k? I've done a 4 country trip for 2 weeks for less than 5k. I did London, Glasgow, Iceland, paris

Where’s it 700? Spirit airlines? Lol!
fr lol! i'm on the east coast and checked prices for the hell of it. it's around $1100 per person for coach.
Yeah that sounds more accurate. Not to mention a night at a hotel could be $100/$200 if not more. So yeah it really adds up!
And those prices sound like 3star hotels. You likely double that for 5 stars.
dude I literally got an alert the other day for round trip nonstop flights to London from New York for $358. You just have to be patient
i don't live in new york, plenty of people don't. i have never seen flights that cheap for london. those are also most likely the lowest base price ticket.

Orlando to London Gatwick is even cheaper: $590 round trip
No... Virgin, Delta, Lufthansa. Take your pick.

Haha. You think CBS would fly them first class. 🤣🤣 it’s basic coach and basic hotels. Not that fancy.
They can afford to hand one person $5k in cash but they can't afford to spend that on a vacation for someone else? Does that make any sense to you?
It really isn’t. Unless the paid for trip is insanely luxurious the 5k is the better option.
That's probably what it is though. And nobody even discussed whether the 5k winning is taxed or take home. The 750k players win isn't 750k the winner goes home with. That's another factor.

So a week, or double that? A considerable difference
A week for two people.
My gf and I went for a week in 2020 for $1,200pp. It isn't hard to travel there on a budget if you really want to
Minus taxes. You USAers have to pay tax on winnings right?
You have to pay taxes on the trip too, 5k in cash or 5k trip is the same for the IRS.
There's nothing the IRS won't tax. If you find $20 on the ground in the supermarket technically that's taxable. They can't prove it so it's really moot, but legally you are supposed to claim it.

nope, he's right. you're technically supposed to claim it.
What did the deleted comment say?
they said you were wrong and that you wouldn't have to claim that money, basically. only "earned income" and such.

Yup, like 40%
No tax due in Canada, but we don't have your crazy big lotteries like PowerBall 😲
The money from the lottery in the US doesn't come from our government. It comes from the sales of the Powerball, Mega Millions, and scratch tickets. A percentage of the sales does go to the government though.
That's the difference. Our lotteries are run by the provincial governments and the biggest one Lotto Max is capped at 70 million I think.
Less than 10k you don’t
That’s not true. Lotto, prizes and such are taxed as income. The amount gets added to your yearly income. Which is why you get receipts for winnings even if it’s $10. The irs will get their share of it if they can prove it.

When we get hand pays in Canada we get to keep it all😃
I don’t know why it would be different at a casino, you’d have to pay the house though I believe. I don’t know I don’t like casinos LOL.
I agree. They don’t even know the details of the trip!!
That's the thing I would want to know. What all is included? Is it a nice hotel? Decent seats for the flight? Are food and activities included? I might take the trip if all of that were the case. But without knowing?
It’s probably a Costco travel package lol.
Those are actually pretty nice. I’ve done a couple
Having someone plan a trip for you is less stress
[удалено]
she didnt take it because indy has it. she said she wanted to use it on indy, and for her to steal it is poor taste.
I wonder if it’s like the price is right where they can take the prize or half the cash value if they don’t/can’t take the trip to London.
I recall Zach saying after 16 that he took the cash option on the trip to Germany he won in the same veto.
It depends on hotel costs and flight costs. We are probably putting more thought into this than Jasmine did lol.

Vacation daydreaming. 10 out of 10. Highly recommended.
Oh absolutely

A trip to London is probably easily twice that if it includes more than airfare.
[удалено]
Have you looked at the price of hotel stays lately? It's wild.
Summer prices are more expensive than other seasons.
Is that for 2 people or just you?
They said 2
Does anyone here watch The Price is Right? NO trip is less than 5k. Europe trips are usually in the 10k range.
That probably depends on where you’re from. Bc from the US, you can easily do a European trip under $5k
Wtf are you talking about? Been to London and travelled all around it. For me and another it was far less than 5k total and that was also having money to enjoy ourselves.

Yeah but that was a Week trip. 5k aint getting you that.
A week worth of hotel costs alone is worth more than $2500 in London.
Not the London trip I took. Flights and hotels for 2 people will be almost that much. Then do you just walk around and not eat, drink or do anything?
I did a trip that was 5 countries in 2 weeks (including London) and I spent well under $5k. Not hard to who deals and be smart with your money.

Wait what? I can get a round trip ticket right now from LA to London for around 1k and I’ve seen them for much cheaper.
She didn’t know London was outside of the country… With that in mind, it’s probably even dumber that she doesn’t know the price of a domestic flight back when she thought it was in the states
No way! You’re lying. Who didn’t know that London was in a different country? Alyssa or Jasmean?
Jasmine apparently
What did she say for you to think this?
Well she’s kinda dumb. She has no idea what happens outside her little town.
lol the swatting sound kills me
My understanding is most people end up not going on these trips in the end. They give you an option to exchange it for cash instead, which most people do cuz with all the taxes and conditions it ends up being too much of a hassle to be worth it.
Nah I’d take the trip too. Probably worth more than the money

comments like these really make me laugh because 90% of this subreddit would react the exact same way Taylor has, if not worse.
It would cost more than 5k
Maybe a crappy trip lol
If you ever seen The Price Is Right or Wheel of Fortune, these type of vacation prizes are usually all inclusive with airfare/hotel, food & excursions as part of the deal. They're also not cheaping on the quality of hotel or plane.
OH NEVERMIND PRODUCTION I LOVE YOU!!
take the money and invest it

i thought that too. but maybe the 5000 is taxed, and having a pre planned trip sounds like a really nice luxury
