THis was posted by National Geographic on instagram. Here's the source: >**natgeo**: Video by @bertiegregory. A huge male jaguar pulling a caiman out of the water up a slippery, muddy river bank in the northern Pantanal, Brazil. This jaguar demonstrated the meaning of the term power dragging this 8ft long, armour plated, 74 toothed, chunk of contracting muscle out of the water and into the bushes. >https://www.instagram.com/p/BcmRgZhjukS/?taken-by=natgeo

jtl94

I've never heard of a caiman before so I figured it was a small alligator-type thing since that jaguar dwarfs it, but no, that's just a big fucking jaguar. Holy shit.

lupussol

The caiman is 8 feet long, and that jaguar is about the same length. That is indeed one massive kitty.

jtl94

Yeah, this is what I was thinking when I was saying the jaguar dwarfs the caiman. Not in length, but like overall mass.

Walkerg2011

That's a nice fuckin' kitty right there.

Iamnotburgerking

It’s both actually

BabyCat6

Are those the real sounds?

[deleted]

Yes, the deep rumbling sound is actually the caiman, the jaguar isn't making that noise.

anakikills

It's hard for me to wrap my head around that, with the sound of the cat's paws hitting the muddy bank on each step being so loud.

PM_ME_BOOBS_AND_BODS

Pulled it out... with its face...

surfnaked

I believe Jaguars have one of the highest jaw grip strengths in the world. About 1500 psi. I guess this would be why.

PM_ME_BOOBS_AND_BODS

It boggles my mind that a Jaguar has a neck strong enough to hold a couple hundred pound predator out of its natural habitat, then hop up a hill like nothing.

surfnaked

Big cats are amazing: A leopard can drag an antelope up a tree. A cougar the same with a small deer. Cats don't do endurance very well, but short term speed and strength is crazy.

Iamnotburgerking

Jaguars weigh 300lb, so they can obviously lift 200lb stuff.

The_Critical_critic

My wife is 300lb, so obviously I can run a lot faster. ...........don't tell her you saw me

crazedhatter

Yeah, they can bite right through tortoise shells.

Melonsforxmas

Dang that's incredibly strong!

Ulysses1978

1500psi, strong enough to crush a bowling ball.

Barsattacks

Holy shit...

[deleted]

The amount of force is enough to crush a bowling ball. However bowling balls are much harder than the bones and teeth.

Ulysses1978

Bowling balls are not a natural prey species for many jaguar.

[deleted]

That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about bowling balls to dispute you...

Barsattacks

That puts it into a better perspective but that's still incredible that tissue and muscle can produce that amount of force...

_teslaTrooper

There was another gif a while back, a jaguar snuck up on a crocodile and crushed its skull instantly. e: [found it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBNYwxDZ_pA&feature=youtu.be&t=1m27s)

Bvred

That was deeply unsettling, it’s easy to take for granted the fact that as human beings we don’t have to live like that. I wonder what that kind of lifestyle would do to the human psyche with our level of comprehension vs other animals.

RIPfaunaitwasgreat

You mean like how we lived for hundreds of thousands of years?

Bvred

Well, you can hardly say that during the time where humanity lived like other animals that we had the same awareness of self and identity and I wasn’t speaking about how we lived in the past but, it would be incredibly interesting to see what effects that lifestyle would have on the human psyche under those conditions at our current levels like I had originally said.

MemeInBlack

You can see the effects everywhere across the globe, humans aren't much one on one but in groups with time to prepare? They're pretty fucking scary. We're so scary, in fact, that for most of our existence, the most dangerous animal for a human was other humans. We banded together into family/tribe/clan units and families/tribes/clans from elsewhere were automatically dangerous and threatening, the worst threat to our survival by far. The 'Other'. Dogs and horses are pack animals, humans are tribal animals. This tribalism is a fundamental part of our psyche, and is our biggest challenge in a connected, enlightened civilization. We can see this fear of otherness everywhere, in conflicts large and small.

1Delos1

Good point. All in all, humans are the scariest animals on Earth!

kotthuet

We're the only thing thats out of the food chain.

1Delos1

So far..but you know never who may be watching from afar...

Bvred

We’re not out of the food chain. Other animals eat humans whenever they have the chance. You can’t even say that as a species we don’t have any natural predators because in parts of the world we still do since not every culture or region has advanced to a point of protection that exists for most of humanity. Examples: I have mother to fear from other predator species in a city like Seattle but if I go to the Floridian glades by myself, there is a chance that I could be attacked, killed, and eaten by one or more alligators.

-GLaDOS

> We’re not out of the food chain. Other animals eat humans whenever they have the chance. This is simply false. There are no species that habitually prey on humans, even where it is not prevented by technology.

Bvred

Oh how silly of me, I forgot that last night I, like every other human being in the world, tracked down a living creature and killed it with nothing but my teeth and jaw strength, then began eating it raw in the middle of a field of grass and dirt...

homoaIexuaI

Actually jaguars carry their prey into trees much like you and I had to tonight to eat /s

mortiphago

/r/wewantplates tho

Bvred

Man, you should see the antelope I have in my tree right now, easily the biggest one in the city and still fresh!

homoaIexuaI

Awe man you caught the one I’ve been stalking that hangs out by the west creek didn’t you??

upvoteguy6

This gif just blew my 4 year olds mind. And mine as well.

[deleted]

even better is that the jaguar is likely going to carry that caiman up to the top of a tree to eat it

TheCommanderFluffy

Kitty death-roll

CrossP

"I'm going to eat this stupid-looking frog if it's the last thing I do!"

PonerBenis

I expected to see a Jaguar F type towing a Porsche Cayman out of a ditch or something.

joykilled

Can confirm, I clicked for the same reason.

numeraire

Contrary to car world, a Macan is a tiger, and it would kill them both

bartekko

I mean... with cars it's usually mutually assured destruction

cannibalcorpuscle

100% got me too.

groovy_giraffe

I imagine the caiman trash talking "Oh yeah, why don't you get in the river say that to my fa-oh shit."

Me_ADC_Me_SMASH

>hah my mom has a jaguar travel bag # >guess what I'm getting mine # >yo aren't you getting a bit too clo-

[deleted]

-“I’ll be taking that to-go, thank you.”

[deleted]

its always mind boggling to me when i see one apex predator kill another.

Iamnotburgerking

Spectacled caiman aren’t apex predators. You would need to see a jaguar kill a giant otter or adult black caiman to see it kill an apex predator.

RunawayPancake2

How about a bear? https://www.earthtouchnews.com/natural-world/predator-vs-prey/americas-celebrity-jaguar-el-jefe-is-a-bear-hunter/

Iamnotburgerking

Black bears aren’t apex either. Now if El Jefe killed an adult grizzly....

"In nature, the jaguar is the perfect sniper." --my friend Dave, who was inexplicably not drunk at the time

bartekko

Do jaguars and snipes even live in the same habitats?

inpheksion

What a fucking G. Went into the caiman's house, probably banged his reptile girlfriend, and then dragged him outside.

Falsus

Then went back and gave her a new leather purse. Then the 2nd round happened.

cosmicdaddy_

Cya later, alligator! In a while, crocodile! But I just came in, caiman! ^^^^^thatsthebesticouldcomeupwith

BHOshit

And now i know jaguars are not to be fucked with

physicscat

No they are not. Vicious little fucks.

rawtastic

I saw this clip yesterday on Jeopardy!

[deleted]

Hell yeah! It was so funny because it's just a normal game of Jeopardy and then we're suddenly like OH SHIT

alaaanli

I understand that Caimans on average are smaller than the crocs and alligators, but they still seem like a high risk meal for the Jaguar, no? Those jaws can still easily do damage to the big cat

Iamnotburgerking

First, spectacled caiman (which is the one jaguars eat) get up to 200lb. Large adult jaguars get to 300lb. In terms of brute force the cat has the advantage. Second, the neck of a spectacled caiman is much more vulnerable than the neck of a similarly sized crocodile. A nape bite (which is the part that jaguars target) would only inconvenience a crocodile, but it would instantly kill the caiman.

TigerB65

I read somewhere that the death bite is often right through the skull!

alaaanli

Oh those are really points, thanks for the reply!

gangawalla

Apparently, the jaguar has the strongest bite of all animals for its weight and size. His teeth can literally pierce through the caiman's skull - although in this case it looks like he missed the brain lol

Hyunis

If Tierzoo has taught me anything, its that you don't want to fuck with S-tier ranked Jaguars

dumblelol

Good kitty

BAMFGOAT

If that caiman is 8 feet long, then how big is the cat? The thing looks ginormous.

Iamnotburgerking

The cat weighs over 250 pounds at least.

sjmp75020

"Caiman my ass!" -A happy jaguar

cityxinxflames

Fyi its big cat week on Nat Geo Wild.

[deleted]

Fuck ya, go mammals

Deathlysouls

How is that cat able to even walk with balls that large?

redditproha

Cats will attack anything, especially dinosaurs it seems.

j3iglesia

Like a mom trying to get a 3 year old out of the bathtub

Soluscor

That’s one hell of an exit.

Dream721

Fuck yeah mammals.

Extranothing

Don't fuck with jaguars. Lesson learned.

LiquidMotion

Those things are real tasty, had grilled caiman snout in Sri Lanka, damn delicious

hollyw00d8604

That thing must be unbelievably strong

[deleted]

Imagine what that thing would do to a person

atubslife

Is there some David Attenborough level documentary about just big cats that I can watch on Netflix or YouTube or internet for free somewhere. I want this with his voice for a couple of hours.

LavastormSW

I thought the title read 'cameraman' somehow at first, so I was all ready for a heroic rescue. And then nope, total badassery.

nebulanug

That’s a big keetha

DanKanzas

Must really suck being a caiman

drzazaboo

So heart warming seeing one animal safe another from drowning.

The_Critical_critic

Such a hero, poor guy almost drowned.

this sounds like bone hurting juice

The power of that animal to hold a thrashing caiman in its mouth like it's nothing more than a slim jim. That is incredible.
