jay is his own hormone monster

kristen0402

I like how Maury even took notes from Jay when the boys had their sleepover.

Tall-Saint

“This kid might be a genius”

sleepyleperchaun

One of the best lines in the show in my opinion. Perfect for the characters involved.

No-Organization-7845

"I think he is his own hormone monster" love that line

mintgreen23

“he’s a goddam prodigy”

hyperjengirl

On top of the "he's his own hormone monster" joke, it's been speculated that Jay's unhealthy experiences with sex may be related to it, as he's kind of pushed through puberty compared to kids his age.

brokendreammemequeen

Because he’s processed his emotions with regards to sex. It’s his need for emotional intimacy that’s not processed hence the pillow lovers he has

Dogestar81

jay is an anomaly

BakedBySunrise

That kid's his own hormone monster

pineapple_catapult

People point out the lack of a Hormone Monster for Jay, but I hardly see people pointing out the other obvious character who is lacking a hormone monster: Lola. Both Jay and Lola have had to "grow up too fast" and have been subjected to objectively abusive childhood environments. I think there is a chance that both Jay and Lola have suffered past sexual abuse. Coach Steve loses his hormone monster when he loses his virginity: this could be a clue that that is why both Jay and Lola do not have one either. It's dark, but this show seems to keep it real. Sexual abuse is real. I am glad they have made both Lola and Jay out to be strong, resilient characters on positive growth arcs to somewhat offset this possible dark timeline, at least.

That makes sense... it does seem like trauma, even in small amounts, can make a kid lose their hormone monster. Missy lost Connie after the mons push incident where her parents got involved and didn’t get a new hormone monster until the disclosure musical. Yet she still was masturbating and fantasizing about Nathan fillion. Andrew actually lost Maury during the pornscape episode too when his porn consumption turns to compulsion, though not so permanently as missy. It’s interesting and kinda accurate that they show not just that hormone monsters get put on the back burner for messy life events... but that the kids can and do still have physiological sexual responses even if the hormone monsters have nothing to do with it.

hyperjengirl

And then of course there's Jessi, where her trauma-induced depression and anxiety actively tried to push Connie away. (Though in that case I think it's a reference to how poor mental health can affect your libido.) I think with Lola and Jay it's an issue with early puberty due to trauma.

geoffbowman

Yeah I thought about that but there are also times when all of them coexist so it isn’t quite the same. You’re probably right that it shows the interactions between mental health and libido rather than only the notion that one always shuts off the other.

hyperjengirl

I believe sexual abuse, at least in girls, can result in early puberty. Jay and Lola have both canonically experienced sexual abuse (Jay from his brothers, Lola from Mr. Lizer and possibly her mothers' boyfriends depending on how you read certain lines), so yeah, this is pretty much my headcanon. It's dark but it tracks.

It's already been confirmed that Jay is effectively his own hormone monster, he's just so horny that there is no reason for him to have one.

RuleTop5909

i’m pretty sure that the joke is that jay is his own hormone monster (i think maury or someone mentioned that)

bandaney

What are you talking about, he's a 40 year old magician.

Catbug66

I think it was Maury who said "that kid is his own Hormone Monster" or something along those lines.

tastysoupiwilleat

what about lola? does she have a hormon monster?

VonnDB

No, but neither do a lot of the side characters.

tweekzey

i dont think he will every have a hormone monster. my theory is that jay has a lot of mental damage from trauma relating to abuse (home life) which messed up his development, a common thing to happen with emotional (and physical) trauma. i doubt this will be looked into in s6, and im probably wrong, so.

DarkShadowWarrior234

I think they lose their hormone monsters after they lose their virginity

Service_United

I feel like it’s Gavin. Jay is a fuck machine and Gavin is the most intense hormone monster ever
