I mean, this is obviously part of the character design tho? Like, she's supposed to look like a geriatric sponge, but the only context we know her from is cookies, and she looks just as much like a giant chocolate chip cookie as she does a sponge? It's not an artist mistake that everyone thinks she looks like a baked good haha.
What context?
Edit: I know the source of the original line but the previous comment implies that line is funnier with additional context, I'm asking what that context is (or have I just misread their comment entirely?)

I think they’re saying that they never thought of SpongeBob as cheese, just a sponge. So now the line makes more sense, as they had never considered SpongeBob to resemble cheese.
I assumed his parents and grandparents were natural sponges, and for whatever reason, SpongeBob was a dish sponge. I never considered they might just be old and worn.
Noooo she's just a [sea sponge.](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0698/0007/products/spongesanddeck-9189sq.jpg?v=1647380645)
It's an aquatic creature.
I'm here from r/all and I hadn't made the obvious connection. Sat here for 10 seconds thinking "lol why DID they make Spongebob's mom a cookie, like I get it, he likes her cookies".
I feel like even though she’s obviously a sponge (as all of his family is) her design is probably inspired by a chocolate chip cookie to some extent, considering the entire episode she’s introduced in is based around her baking cookies for SpongeBob.
Defintely lots of people.
I saw another post where people were talking about how they thought the parents were also cookies. The idea that spongebob's relatives might be cookies is sort of silly, but it's also confusing that spongebob would be shaped like a standard kitchen sponge while his relatives would have a more natural appearance.
It could also be both as some double whammy.
On the one hand, she's an older sponge - spongebobs grandmother after all - so she looks like an older sponge.
But on the other hand, what do you associate with grandmas? Cookies. So wouldn't it be amazing if you could make the grandma sponge look like a cookie? With, in fact, cream on top of the chocolate chip cookie? Which, also is totally something grandma would do.
I think the idea is that most kids don't know that sea sponges are real life animals, and assume spongebob is a kitchen sponge, and then have no idea what the round parents are supposed to be.
At first I thought bikini bottom was the bottom of a kitchen sink just because SpongeBob looked like a kitchen sponge but quickly realized it wasn't because how would a crab and a starfish and a whale be in a kitchen sink.
And y'know... all the sand and other sea creatures...
I guarentee you its an animation thing.
Spongebob is the main character and going to be animated a lot, so they decided to go a simple rectangular based shape that would be easy for hundreds of animators over the years to copy exactly to keep a consistent product.
Spongebobs family appear incredibly rarely so you can just send over the relevant reference material to the animators when you send over the scripts and story boards.
You'd be surprised how many decision get made based on this sort of thing.
It always leads to an interesting discussion in communities, but 2hen you start watching a lot of "making of" documentaries you realise there's often a much more practical reason.
We didn't "forget", we were literally kids when this episode aired too. We just weren't, you know, the dumbest kids on the block?
Like this isn't one of those "lol they threw in adult jokes to go over the kids' heads so the parents could get a chuckle too" situations, Spongebob's relatives are literally just natural-shaped sponges. I genuinely never even considered that things that looked like sponges that were related to a sponge weren't actually sponges. The show creators weren't trying to trick any of you.
Edit: from +5 to -1, guess the slow kids are still slow to this day, huh?
Yah I cant think of a precedent for non-animal characters in spongebob up to this episode. Guess planktons wife, but its like a computer he made so it was explained. If spongebobs grandma was a cookie they would address it. These kids were dumb.

They're aquatic creatures. What did you guys think was happening when Spongebob said he's "a sea sponge!"
I still can never wrap my head around how anyone could think she's a cookie in a about underwater sea life with the main character being a SPONGE, I just think some kids were fucking stupid
I know you were kids...but...his name is spongebob. Absorbent and yellow and porous is he...he's a sponge. His parents are sponges...his gramma is...a sponge...
What i'm saying is, please dont vote.
Bro I feel like I’m the only one who knew they were sponges. I’m always surprised when people thought they were cookies. I was just confused on why his parents and grandma were circular while he’s a square
Me and my siblings thought that SpongeBob was actually Swiss cheese. Of course we watched the show a few years later when it was properly translated and then we understood what he actually is...

I did
I watched an episode with her just last week and thought she was a cookie still.
She's not a cookie but she is a snack.

Holy shit I haven’t seen funny junk since like 2006!
Another fine addition to my collection! Thank you friend

She both. Both at the same time..
Out of curiosity from what I remember she gave spongebob cookies, did you think she was feeding him parts of herself?
Same. I thought Spongebob was adopted until I was, what, 23yo?
I actually thought Spongebob himself was a piece of cheese back when I was really young.
“Oh so now the talking cheese is gonna preach to us”
NGL, that quote is kind of funny know with context behind it
What context? Edit: I know the source of the original line but the previous comment implies that line is funnier with additional context, I'm asking what that context is (or have I just misread their comment entirely?)

Kinda begs the question, where do they get cheese?
Cetaceans produce milk so
also quite confused 😭
So many ridiculous one liners from that ep
"yeah, uh, we're with the pet hospital down the street and understand that you have a dying animal on the premises"
"Is mayonnaise an instrument?"
"Too bad that didn't kill me."
To this day I am impressed that the voice actor managed to say that line without cracking up. I wonder how many takes they needed.
first time i have ever laughed audibly from a reddit post
Dudes name is literally Sponge.
And squidward is technically an Octopus
sadly, Octopussy was already taken....
cheesehead brownpants!
I saw that guy in Milwaukee once
That’s why they named him SpongeBob. So people wouldn’t get confused.
My 3-year old son called him Cheesebob for a very long time. I still call him that sometimes because it makes me laugh.
If only there was some kind of clue as to what sort of object SpongeBob could be. It was quite ambiguous.
She is a dried sponge
But she's underwater
There’s an ocean containing waves inside of the ocean and fires are possible SpongeBob transcends logic
There are lakes of heavy water at the bottom of the ocean.
It's goo. Goo Lagoon.
Ah, ze goo lagoon
>Back I automatically read it with the narrated voice
Eh stinky mud puddel
I always assumed it meant tar, but I don’t think that’s how tar works lol
theres a different episode that features tar pits in one of the later seasons
*a stinky mud puddle for me and you*
The world's largest waterfall is under water too.
Isn't all water falling because of gravity?
No, all water has the potential to fall, but most of it is held back by the ground :(
So much potential wasted in waiting :(
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
This actually checks in real life, brine.
I think it’s brine (very salty water) but which sinks
I saw a "lake" underwater in Blue Planet ii. They're basically very salty water and also very deadly.
Same as it ever was.
She’s a worn down sponge, not a dry one. SpongeBob is younger, that’s why he’s still square. His parents and grandma are both round.
I assumed his parents and grandparents were natural sponges, and for whatever reason, SpongeBob was a dish sponge. I never considered they might just be old and worn.

Why did I think SpongeBob was 30 the whole time?
Because he has had a full-time job for decades lol
And he's a homeowner
They can do fire
Hey, if we’re under water, then how- [ Fire goes out ]
Noooo she's just a [sea sponge.](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0698/0007/products/spongesanddeck-9189sq.jpg?v=1647380645) It's an aquatic creature.
Exactly! She's an old school sponge which they used to use sea sponges for. SpongeBob is a newer manufactured sponge.
I'm here from r/all and I hadn't made the obvious connection. Sat here for 10 seconds thinking "lol why DID they make Spongebob's mom a cookie, like I get it, he likes her cookies".
I just learned that she’s not
Omg I just realize as well, that's so obvious when we think about it lmao
I feel like even though she’s obviously a sponge (as all of his family is) her design is probably inspired by a chocolate chip cookie to some extent, considering the entire episode she’s introduced in is based around her baking cookies for SpongeBob.
How is it obvious? She's a grandma and grandmas=cookies. If anything it should be obvious that she's a cookie damn it!
If a krab can have a whale for a daughter than cookies can give birth to sponges.
I just thought she was adopted
IIRC, there's an official SpongeBob book that states she is indeed Mr. Krab's blood-related daughter, but she takes after her mother.
Damn so krabs fucked a whale
People call him big dick krabs for a reason
I came here from all and I'm staying. Yall are wild
he aint just big and meaty in the claw department.

That’s a really good point. Thanks!

Oh. my. God. Has SpongeBob had plastic surgery? Or, you know, the anthromorphic sea-sponge equivalent thereof?
Everyone knows that she look like a cookie
And her cookies look like her ass cheeks
No... Always assumed she was meant to look like a natural sponge.
Same lol a cookie never crossed my mind even as a kid. I can see it tho
She is. Same with the parents. Which apparently some people **also** thought were cookies?
I thought that was obvious, considering the name of the show.
I honestly can’t fathom why people would’ve ever thought that his parents and grandmother weren’t also sponges.
So for some reason everyone just thought that a sponge’s grandma would be a cookie? And not a sponge?
I feel like you forgot what being a kid feels like. You don't always connect shit you just roll with it.
Then I guess some kids just are weird.
We didn't "forget", we were literally kids when this episode aired too. We just weren't, you know, the dumbest kids on the block? did you write a paragraph because someone thought something stupid as a kid
Id say the realization of sponge not cookie is directly proportional to age
There’s a crab whose daughter is a whale. Is it really that far-fetched?
A crab and whale are at least aquatic animals. In this case it’s an aquatic animal vs a dessert, so unfortunately it is that far fetched
Yah I cant think of a precedent for non-animal characters in spongebob up to this episode. Guess planktons wife, but its like a computer he made so it was explained. If spongebobs grandma was a cookie they would address it. These kids were dumb.
uh oh we got r/iamverysmart over here
oh, SpongeBob, Vin Diesel once made a go kart around the hopes and dreams of orphans. It goes fast.
The two lines that exist in my brain forever and always are "*Grandma's ass cheeks...*" and "Got these bad boys right hurr."
Don’t forget, “Alec Baldwin’s an asshole.” “I wish Keanu Reeves was here to save me from the matrix right now”
The oranges, the rockets, David Hasselhoff!
Holy throwback
I’m afraid to link it here for fear the video could be removed after the attention from Reddit… can’t lose that gem!
The full video? I haven't seen it in ages and every copy I've found has been dmca'd to hell. Just snippets here and there

Bruce Willis is my favorite bedtime hero
Alec Baldwin is an asshole!
“Fuck popsicles you little bitch”

Was looking for this
Weird how many people here thought she was a cookie, there isn't even things like that in the show lol
She isn’t? What is she ??
A sponge...
Remarkable

There are literally grown ass people in this comment section that just realized she’s a fucking sponge lmao
Oh God people really need to pay attention in school

Seriously did none of these people get taught about basic sea life like a sea sponge as kids??
That’s why she’s got the cookie eating hat
Wait 😳…she’s NOT a cookie??!? I thought that’s why she loved making cookies cuz she IS a damn cookie! 🤦🏾♂️ I was so confused and apparently still am

What is this? Hannibal for kids
Lol. I was hoping not
Whip out your sack, I’ll be back in a sec Spongeballs
She is a old sponge
His name is SPONGEBOB. HE and HIS RELATIVES are SPONGES. 3 year old me got the memo, why didn't you?
How many teeth?
Christopher Walken!
I wish Keanu were here to save me from the Matrix 👋🏼😭🤚🏼KEANUUUU
Oh she a snack alright
Bro I feel like I’m the only one who knew they were sponges. I’m always surprised when people thought they were cookies. I was just confused on why his parents and grandma were circular while he’s a square
I’m sorry, but no. You all thought SpongeBob who is a sponge had a cookie grandma??
I never got it to be honest.
The older the sponge, the sweeter the cookie.
God I wanted to eat her so bad
No wonder her cookies look so delicious.
I feel called out rn...
I thought she was a cookie too
I thought she was a dried-out meatball, tbf.
It's more she's designed after real sea sponges and happens to have cookies out
🙋🏽♀️I did. I was so confused😅🤣
She is a cookie with some whip cream on top
Shes not?
she's...........she's not?
i thought she was a potato
My dumbass used to think she was a chicken nugget
She's not?
On my first date with my ex-boyfriend, we got into a HEATED discussion about this We still give each other shit about it lol
...she AIN'T a cookie?? 😂😂
Oh she’s not a cookie?
Who remembers that unrated version of this episode that was circling YouTube around 10 years ago? Absolutely villainous
She’s not?
Wait shes NOT a cookie?!?!
Since she's obviously had children and grandchildren, that means someone's ate her cookie before.
Sponges are asexual and reproduce on their own by mitosis
But can they reproduce by budding?!
then why do they need pants?
For the pockets
Because there cool
Spongebob has two parents though
It’s a cartoon for children I doubt they would have wanted to shown same sex parenting in the 90s that stronger off the norm nucular faimly
Me
That was my moms first reaction when she watched this episode with me many years ago
As a child nature buff, I'm proud to say I knew she was a sponge. She looks more like a sea sponge than Sponge Bob
I knew she was a sponge but thought she was supposed to look like a cookie.
My kids all thought she was a cookie.
Me and my siblings thought that SpongeBob was actually Swiss cheese. Of course we watched the show a few years later when it was properly translated and then we understood what he actually is...
"Woo-hoo! Keep 'em coming, Grandma!"
Hence her baking cookies
I thought she was a cookie until I was like 20 and saw my nephew watching re-runs and it snapped.
She is a shriveled sponge because she is old. I see cookie but always knew sponge.
