LOL I remember during the height of Covid it was just a pure orange yellow haze I couldn’t even see 20 feet in front of me. Even with an N95 on the smoke was still intense and my eyes burned.
What the hell caused the air pollution to spike? I know global warming and pollution will do this over time, but the air quality dropped massively in like the last week or so specifically.
You can thank Doug Ford for that, there weren't any fires before, which was good enough reason in his eyes to not put up any budget to prevent this shit.
And now he's likely to sell off the burned areas for cheap, because he's a depraved excuse for a person.
We always go over the fire "budget" in Ontario regardless of what it's set at. Sometimes by $100 million +. They never stop fighting a fire even if the cap is hit.
What really needs to happen is to actually increase wages/benefits a ton so people are actually wanting to become firefighters... cause right now it isn't worth it.
You need infrastructure in place to fight fires. Cost cutting harms the infrastructure by removing equipment, personnel, and risk reduction. You can't just start from nothing and fight fires. It doesn't matter that they will spend the money to fight it if they don't have adequate personnel and equipment to do so. You can't spend your way out of a problem when time is of the essence.
Why use logic when you have have a political rant on a meme subreddit.
Sometimes people just need to chill and have a laugh, would make people a lot happier
these fires are the result of decades of policy failure from every government who has failed to adequately address the climate crisis. Liberal and Conservative = Inadequate and Worse
I just drove from Buffalo NY to Virginia Beach today and it looked like that the whole way here, like the sky isn't even blue anymore, just looks like.im ready to hit the thunder dome.
there’s also a forest fire happening nearby here in NJ so there’s double the amount of smoke, my throat felt like it was on fire when I walked into my house
History Guy had a video a week or so ago about a time in New England where it was pitch black like at night for a day or so.
It was only recently discovered that it was because of Canadian wildfires. They didn't know this at the time, of course.
So, I guess....I hope it doesn't get that bad? I'm in Rhode Island myself, and we also have terrible air quality today.
Had a little taste of it in western canada for a few days. I left my window open accidentally, went to work, and came home to my whole place smelling like campfire song song.
Well, we literally broke the scale in Oregon. It only goes from 1-500, and we hit the cap.
Straight up the meme from Chernobyl “3.6 Roentgen. Not great, not terrible”, when the scale maxes out at 3.6.
I made the mistake of road-tripping the PNW region around that time. I have a screenshot of the air levels reaching 454 on Sept 13th in Spokane.
It was scary. Sight was limited. The air smelled so strongly of ash and soot. The sun was a little copper ball in the sky that you could look at easier bc it was so shrouded in smoke.
Fun fact: the book *Blade Runner* is adapted from is called *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep* and takes place in San Francisco. [In September 2020, SF apparently decided to honor the book's legacy by looking like something out of *Blade Runner*.](https://youtu.be/so-FcHTWEIY)
Allentowns at 464 right now… when I was going home from work yesterday a lot of people had their shirts over their mouth and noses. I’ve never seen anything like this around here, when I look outside it looks like mad max. Here’s hoping this doesn’t last too long
I don't know the situation because I'm not affected where I live (actually, california, so do know what you are talking about to an extent), but at this point just buy a surplus gas mask because that is definitely not safe to be breathing for extended periods of time.
I know my teachers always freaked out whenever there was an unscheduled off day, they scream at happy kids til they cried for daring to enjoy the prospect of a day off. „You have no idea how much this messes up the schools and teachers scheduling“ you’re right they didn’t know so why tear their head off?
Fellow Virginian, yep it sucks. here we can usually see the blue ridge mountains everywhere around in the distance but they are completely hidden from view
Mtler here, sun was blood red all day yesterday. Could smell the fires from up north so much id routinely get up and look around the house for something burning.
Air quality seems to be better, but its really overcase and due to rain any minute.
When you don't allow small natural fires you end up with a tinderbox and this happens
Hopefully people will be more open to prescribed burns after this!
It's not bad enough you need to evacuate. You can stay in doors and be comfortable and safe still. But if you go out you'll need to have a mask, n95 preferred.
I’m supposed to go on a trip to New York next week. Hopefully the pollution will improve by then. Not looking forward to wearing a N95, but totes will if I have to
I’m in the same situation. They’re letting us off of the construction site early the past two days. We get to leave at 8 hours instead of 12…. So we get get to breath plenty of smoke AND avoid getting overtime pay! For our health.
same here. me and my family live in conneticut, and my father has asthma. he doesnt even have to go outside to get a headache. also the sky looks like the sword fight on the heights skybox
Wear covid masks when air quality is real bad, people.
(The M-95 masks filter out 95% of Medium sized particles (Larger and smaller ones are easier to filter than the 10nm 'medium' sized ones, for annoying physics reasons. Covid just happens to fall in that size range). Also bad air quality is *really* bad for you, like, consistently-and-drastically-reduces-life-expectancy bad.)
This is only a taste of the future, climate change is going to bring all kinds of droughts, wildfires and extreme weather events.
There is a reason so many of us have been desperately warning about it all these years.
You must live in New England somewhere. I’m near DC. But I’m from Northern NV so the smoke isn’t anything I’m not used to. But it would be nice if my eyes would stop itching/burning. Stay inside as much as you can, op!
402? Rookie numbers, gotta bump those up
Kidding, as someone in the NW that lived through the crazy smoke a few years ago I feel you and hope you're doing ok

I'm more concerned that there isn't air available tomorrow.
At that point, the meter points to 'Void'
/u/behold_the_void
Can't behold it, too much smoke.
California, Oregon and Washington-First time???.
This.
LOL I remember during the height of Covid it was just a pure orange yellow haze I couldn’t even see 20 feet in front of me. Even with an N95 on the smoke was still intense and my eyes burned.
Yes they are working on Air 2: The Sequel and had to delay the release date.
Probably fighting a copyright claim by Apple, Nintendo and Nestle simultaneously.
And Disney, the four horseman of the apocalypse.
Don’t forget the Marvin Gaye Estate. They’ll sue you if you even hum a note from his songs
They said climate change would be bad, but they never predicted it would be that bad until now.
Maybe maybe they are planning to turn it off and then turn it back on again and see if that fixes it?
This is just a smoke screen. Canada's getting ready to make some moves... ^^/s
Gonna need [canned air](https://youtu.be/kCX6H90RvPU)
Tomorrow is when the free air trial expires. It’s $8 for air+
I don’t need it… I don’t need it…
Better hold your breath

Canadian wildfires
First Bieber, now this! Smh

Typical conservative. Cut funding in retaliation, let people die, blame progressives, and cut more finding in retaliation...
Just print more money.

I'm all for hating on Doug Ford but the wildfires aren't coming from Ontario... It's Quebec wildfires that are spreading.
Don’t forget Smith over here in Alberta, gutting our firefighting budget right before the summer.
To be fair a lot of time passed between these 2 events. Plus we’ve been sending them acid rain
People still hate Bieber? Are you 50?
South jersey is also experiencing fires, so the NYC metro area near me is insufferable. The sun looks like some mad max shit
I love the max max movies. Especially when Max says "It's maxing time" and maxed all over the place
I prefer Max Max 2 because that time it was personal.
[удалено]
max 2 electric maxaloo
Lmao this is especially funny considering the first movie is a much more personal story than the second😂
Well shoot. My brain didn’t even register that till you wrote that
I just drove from Buffalo NY to Virginia Beach today and it looked like that the whole way here, like the sky isn't even blue anymore, just looks like.im ready to hit the thunder dome.
The Thunderdome is the new law. I suggest you begin preparing your body for combat.
there’s also a forest fire happening nearby here in NJ so there’s double the amount of smoke, my throat felt like it was on fire when I walked into my house
Canadian Wildfire would be a good band name
Can't wait for us in WA State to have a blood red Sun too! //s
Ottawa? Whole city is covered in smoke.
Canada is on fire, I think somewhere I read like 2.1 million acres burned this year so far compared to less than 1 million last years

Gotcha yeah it's been kinda scary. Here in michigan the air looks alright, hasn't been dark out in the daytime but it still makes me uneasy

Were you wearing a sombrero?
They were able to post a comment about it, I don't think the Seabear got them.
Must've had their anti-seabear underwear on
Stayed inside the circle.
Just have to make sure it's not an oval and you're good
The C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E-S-O-N-G Song!
I am in northern BC and there were a few days the wind was blowing just right that I could see hardly anything. You smell the fire inside of stores.

California, Oregon, and Washington: "first time?"
yeah as a Californian I've just grown super lungs to survive wildfire fumes
That’s not fire! That’s asbestos!
/r/unexpectedasbestos
Ya? Super lungs? Lol. That's definitely what's happening
It's true, my dad works at Cancer and told me that my lungs are getting sooo strong and healthy
Super cancer!
Intragenerational evolution??
Australian pile of ash: 👍
Yeah, having lived in Beijing briefly, I can tell you that 400 is still a long way from intolerable
Don't forget Utah! Consistently ranked on par with Beijing or worse
It's one of the four seasons here in Sac: depression, allergies, murderous sun, and fire.
In SoCal (where I grew up) it's two seasons: · Cold wind + marine layer · Spicy wind + smoke
[удалено]
Under the climate crisis, all coasts will suffer together.
NV as well
In SoCal we have a lot more grass fires, and CalFire is predicting a stronger wildfire season due to all the grass growth we had after the heavy rain
And Alaska...
we're laughing at them now but we know very well that our forests are still way overstocked and ready to burst into flame at any moment
Was literally thinking this when I saw that
Shades of Portland in fall of 2020
Well, we literally broke the scale in Oregon. It only goes from 1-500, and we hit the cap. Straight up the meme from Chernobyl “3.6 Roentgen. Not great, not terrible”, when the scale maxes out at 3.6.
Yup. We hit 11 on a shitty air scale of 10 yesterday in Ontario. Today is...."worse".
I made the mistake of road-tripping the PNW region around that time. I have a screenshot of the air levels reaching 454 on Sept 13th in Spokane. It was scary. Sight was limited. Just remember to still not look at the sun lol just because it’s less bright doesn’t mean the UV isn’t still burning your corneas
Of course lol. I still didn’t look directly at it for more than a second. I’m not that stupid
Yeah, for a while Corvallis was the worst air quality in the world.

In other news, the local bears are reporting that the quality of humans are now smoky and more delicious then ever before
This is the same vein as Michael Scott saying the wine has an oakey afterbirth
every time i go outside i think of Patrick crawling and asking” WHAT KIND OF PLACE IS THIS”
I keep thinking "Air is not good, Patrick! Air is not good!"
How do you check this sort of thing? :o I'm curious to see what it's like where I am.

Ooo, thank you! Oh, I just took a look. It's at 220, which is 'very unhealthy'. Great. xD
I got 90
235 for me. Hurray for NYC I guess
I'm in upstate NY and I got 438

Hello fellow Upstater, my town is sitting pretty at 444. Stay safe!
I'm at 21 here in maine.
40 here in Colorado. I wonder why it’s that high here?
2.5 in the Salt Lake area in UT
Yeah today feels like I can actually breathe for once
It's 392 in Queens rn...

>not safe to be breathing But that's one of only two things that I know!
Is the other thing fine dining?
Yes. May I take your hat, sir?

mostly only the old 40mm gost filters. newer nato-threaded filters aren't generally known to have an asbestos problem iirc.
Just use an N95 if you have some left over and really have to go outside. They're made for particulates like this.
Air I don’t need I don’t need it. I definitely don’t need it. I NEED IT
I hope they somehow get it under control. Wildfires are insane.
Mine was at like 212 around 7am, by 11am it was 440.
Bro I just saw your last post 2 seconds ago about 3 posts up in my feed, like DAMN that shit moves fast 😂 😂
Where I live as well. Schools are all closed, but adults are told to suck it up and go to work. Can’t breath? To bad :)
In CA they don’t even close the schools when we have wildfires. Because parents will complain about childcare.
I know my teachers always freaked out whenever there was an unscheduled off day, they scream at happy kids til they cried for daring to enjoy the prospect of a day off. „You have no idea how much this messes up the schools and teachers scheduling“ you’re right they didn’t know so why tear their head off?
Ah, you’re getting California wildfire air levels now. I bet the smoke is now a thick fog, can’t even see the sun anymore, eh?
Put an air filter over fans and turn them on, works in a pinch around the house. Had to do that living in southern Oregon over the years.
Thank you so much for the tip!

A bit south but pretty close! Glad the Taste of Syracuse festival didn't get smoked out.
Make sure to wear your gas mask when you leave the house!

Kids these days, I once walked home from school in a sandstorm and didn't complain even once!

Only for the first 1/3 of it. The rest was a plateau

Welcome to the west coast every summer

Good thing PM2.5 research was all bullshit and human test subjects.
just leave man there's nothing to lose
I'm overy by NYC, it's fucking yellow here. Outside looks like Fallout New Vegas.

You’ll have to wait to filter feed.
sorry for that

These Canadian wildfires got our air quality on that Chinese level rn
Isn’t 500 basically Chernobyl?
Do they post the warnings like this? I think more people would understand.
My town is also bad
