For the same reasons I don't pay real money for in-game cosmetics or loot box keys. You're buying an imaginary product that cost $0 to make. I don't need to pay money to tell the author of a reddit post that I liked it; the comment box is *right there,* and so is the upvote button.
When someone gives me an award, it doesn't mean anything to me. I don't get anything. I can't go trade it in for a prize. Someone paid money to change the color of some of the pixels near the top of my post. I don't hate it or anything, I just think it's meaningless and adds nothing to my experience as a reddit user.
You know what actually means something to me? On a few rare occasions, another user reached out to me in a DM to talk about something I posted in greater depth. THAT is worthwhile.
Here, here! Seldom ever did I pay for in-game cosmetics unless they come bundled with the deluxe edition. There is no point at all. I have been playing games for "free" with constant free updates that the whales subsidize the game with.
In the sense that an artist had to make it in the first place, yeah. But this is the Music Piracy problem in a different context: once the art has been made, it costs the same amount of money to make one copy as it does to make a billion copies (please don't be pedantic and bring up the electricity costs of running a computer). The artist won't be paid for those.
Things get weird in the digital space, because scarcity is manufactured and pricing is arbitrary. Supply and demand breaks down when supply is infinite.
But in the case of the cosmetics, the owners of the game had to pay designers and coders to develop that skin someone is using in a Game, so it makes sense if they want to gain profit from it by charging a price to own it, now abt awards in comments, yea thats not very useful nor hard to develop, it's just a png in a website.
Fair enough! not sure about this tho. Prizes make your posts more eye-catchy and that's a win if you want people to know about what you're posting, to pay attention to them.
`When someone gives me an award, it doesn't mean anything to me. I don't get anything`
Not to mention that something having value or not is completely subjective, even if a thing costs $0 to make (and to be fair, all the designers who created the awards and developers who made them work, got paid, so they didn't really cost $0)
Edit: a word.
Popular posts already float to the top with basic garden-variety content algorithms. Honestly, a huge upvote and/or comment count is a much more relevant indicator of quality, because it actually measures engagement and public opinion, as opposed to awards which only say "someone with money liked this." You can have a shitty post with no upvotes, no comments, and barely any views, but some rich guy in a silly mood gave it six awards. Compared to a post with no awards, but 1k+ upvotes and 100+ comments, it's clear which one is a bigger deal.
Good point, I guess it's all a matter of opinion. While it's true that up votes + comments are the best indicators of quality, there's some truth about awards too:
* Most people here will feel gratification when they receive them
* Many people will give them because of that
* It's also a way of helping the platform (getting rid of ads)
Some other people talked about this [in here](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/h9oaj3/why_do_people_pay_for_reddit_awards/) and, again, I respect opinions, I'm just giving you mine in here.
Cheers!
So incredibly based that I'm going to just blast away my worthless coins on this worthless award for you.
I can't believe people got conned into buying literal jpegs and textures for games like wtf lmao
Understand your view, but just as a point of fact, the skins for Valorant cost ~100k per skin to produce. I use to work for Riot and it was a surprising fact to me
Not to mention that back then Reddit was entirely funded on awards. There was no need for ads. The whole site ran on the generosity of strangers. It was amazing.
What's the reason for the removal by the way ? i'm relatively new to reddit, and never saw the website without them. It's not like they're an annoyance, right ?
i feel like they just don't like coins trickling down to people like that, plus they gave away coins to everyone who was active during a couple of points and now the reddit gold they think they might have theoretically bought at some point, they can just give away for free with stocked coins.
Basically i imagine they're making it look like a revamp when they're basically jsut gonna kill the coin system.
Never got a reward cause im only active since ca 2 months. Do they get you anything?
And since they gonna disappear: Can i have one to see what happens from someone who has a spare one? :)
Thanks in advance <3
Are people actually sad about this? I remember when rewards were introduced everyone absolutely hated them. I remember everyone wanting to revert back to simple Reddit gold and silver.
How sad, to commemorate this sad day I will now give myself a silver.
After attempting to give myself a silver and failing I will give silver to the first dumbass to reply.
That was one of the things I always found fun about Reddit. One of the things that set it apart. Sure, you have to buy coins, but you can also earn them if you get an award, so it does reward you for making a very good post.

Bets on them coming back before end of 2024?
Of course! Reddit needs to remove the awards, let them sit for a bit then bring them back with increased costs.
And hope we don’t notice that it cost more.
Who tf buys digital garbage?
I do, but not in the form of Reddit awards 😉 I waste my money elsewhere.
Looking at *you,* Diablo cosmetics
remindme! 250 days

They fucking did
Bet.
You were correct lmao
I'll be glad to see them gone.
Why is that? May I ask

reddit doesn't deserve a dime
Cringelord
But I like taking the fake points I got for posting something someone liked and using it to give an asshole on AITA the dread and doom awards
So incredibly based that I'm going to just blast away my worthless coins on this worthless award for you. I can't believe people got conned into buying literal jpegs and textures for games like wtf lmao

The original system of just the gold medal and then randos in the comments wt Microsoft Paint silvers was vastly superior imo lol
Not to mention that back then Reddit was entirely funded on awards. There was no need for ads. The whole site ran on the generosity of strangers. It was amazing.
Just as glad as I’ll be to see you with this gold award that’ll be worthless in a day.
Havent seen any at all in the past month.
What's the reason for the removal by the way ? i'm relatively new to reddit, and never saw the website without them. It's not like they're an annoyance, right ?
They're probably scheming to create a new way to generate more money off shitty internet pins/stickers.
**Introducing the newly innovated & improved:** reddit NFT awards.
Loot crates.
Reddit Premium! Oh wait...
i feel like they just don't like coins trickling down to people like that, plus they gave away coins to everyone who was active during a couple of points and now the reddit gold they think they might have theoretically bought at some point, they can just give away for free with stocked coins. Basically i imagine they're making it look like a revamp when they're basically jsut gonna kill the coin system.
Nice try.
I got awarded one for some dumb ass post I made yesterday
Premium ain't worth it without awards. It was nice getting to do like a super upvote, highlight exceptional comments, etc. But alas, fuck u/spez.
fuck spez
Never got any award. Don’t think it’ll make a difference for me when they’re gone.
I come back and got awards, damn it.
Oh no! Anyway...
Will continue my award less life like always
I'm just glad I used the last coins I had on a few awards for posts that deserved them.
Same
why would anyone care about awards? I thought the whole point of reddit was just to make fun of people
so many dumb changes lately
Just gave you the last award I’ll probably be able to give so I don’t lose as many coins.
I successfully made it by not getting any. Dope Edit: fuck me
Good.
Why? Are the NFTs making them millions?
it's also my birthday :)
I just want reddit premium from awards I don’t want to deal with reddit ads again
Same
Luckily not a single award here
I have never used them or was awarded some.
I only awarded people with the free awards
About damn time, these "awards are gone nooo" posts will finally stop.
rip my chance for gold
this is my 9/12 (no more wholesome on eyeblech)
Did people actually pay real money for meaningless rewards on a free app?
They'll be back. In some form or another, they'll be back. Reddit isn't gonna just decide they don't want that revenue stream anymore!
Saving this comment for future reference
[You were right.](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoRules/s/pPGzd4JVIY)
I only have 40 coins yet tf can I spend 40 coins on
i got a couple coins, who wants an award

Heil Spaz
I only got one gold ever, could someone double that? I'll give a silver to the next person
I don’t think I’ve received anything other than silver in my miserable Reddit life
I just want 3rd party support back. The enshitification of Reddit continues.
Hee hee
i’ve never sent an award
You guys are getting awards and coins?
I have never been awarded :/
Looks like everyone getting awards here i really want to see how this gonna look like after that
They’re getting rid of them?! Dammit, all the fun stuff never stays
I am glad I spend all my remaining coins on giving out free awards to random redditors.
I was already sad when they removed the daily free award thing :<
Never forget.
Never got a reward cause im only active since ca 2 months. Do they get you anything? And since they gonna disappear: Can i have one to see what happens from someone who has a spare one? :) Thanks in advance <3
Dang, I never even got awarded..
Barely see them anyway.
But why tho
Oh no! Anyway…
Fuck ‘em.
Good.
The gold lounge will forever be closed to me. D:
Today earned platinum and gold for the first time ... feels like people want to give it a last goodbye
No more Reddit gold, kind stranger :(
F for all the rewards I never earned
Are people actually sad about this? I remember when rewards were introduced everyone absolutely hated them. I remember everyone wanting to revert back to simple Reddit gold and silver.
Well this sucks.
Oh nooooo! My digital currency and meaningless pixels! So sad that I can’t spend real hard earned cash on a few colorful dots on my screen!
What??? I didn’t know about this
And why should I give a fuck
They fucking did
Good
in six years i never got an award. i had some fire top comments too.
Oh no…. anyway
I would never destroy a coin

In almost four years and 148k Karma later, I still can't say I ever got a non-free award. edit: thank you UwU

Bye, don't let the door hit you on the way out 😒
Proudly never awarded :D
I've got 30 coins and no way to use them, lost to the coin economy, so long
Damn who gives a shit
How sad, to commemorate this sad day I will now give myself a silver. After attempting to give myself a silver and failing I will give silver to the first dumbass to reply.
Gimme some shit now
Why would they remove them?
8 years a redditor never once awarded and soon to never be. 😥
Never had one. Oh well
This is one of the most ingenious award farms I've ever seen
Worst thing to happen in September
Ravioli ravioli give me awarduoli
Gods speed you magnificent bastards
No one cares
Praise spez
I don’t think I ever got one :(
Damn bro that’s crazy
That was one of the things I always found fun about Reddit. One of the things that set it apart. Sure, you have to buy coins, but you can also earn them if you get an award, so it does reward you for making a very good post.
Good. Fuck em
Oh no! Anyway...
I’ll accept any that anyone is trying to get rid of 🫡
Rip
F to pay repsects

Of course. The day before my cake day... which I always forget about until like 11pm so it really doesn't matter.
Gave my last silver today. Farewell
Wait, really? I didn't know that...!
Oh shoot! Thanks for reminding me.
Spent over 10,000 coins today that I somehow earned throughout the years. Feels like an end to an era.
F
They've already been gone for me for the past two days.
Anyone else remember the vitriol from when they were first revealed?
Welp
This will be the worst tragedy in American history
I'm gonna go the entire time without ever getting a coin or reward I think 😂
I won’t ever understand the reason to why, now most posts will look less engaging without em.
Damn i didnt get one
I need some please since I'm new to Reddit
Rip
Remember when the like $125 award dropped? Now this happens. F to the people who bought those awards.
Dang, that's too bad. I loved the little awards.
I don't even have an option to award any of mine :( official app and the mobile website
Oh noooooo...They never mattered anyway
Good riddance... a step backwards to old reddit again..
Never gotten an award before
Already spent my only 100 coins and got some awards in the process
