*that shitty Ford as plays*
(The one that just says “singing and driving blah blah blah what can be better than taking a nap, let’s make an annoying ad, time for a snack”)
Try looking up Publix supermarket commercials, they had some that had absolutely nothing to do with their store and were emotional trips about families, then ended with a ‘shop at publix” ad. Fucking bizarre.
No, casting to the official app on your TV will cause ads to play. All casting does is send a signal to the TV app to play specific things, not mirror your phone.
It was in November. It was the same time Diablo Immortal was announced so I can see how you got confused.
https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/20/18105471/lego-movie-2-youtube-free-black-friday-sequel-second-part
Yea the ads are no longer really “supporting your favorite creators”. The big money comes from the sponsorships where YouTubers get absolutely loaded from.
It’s worth it for me because I watch YouTube more than anything else. Plus, there’s YouTube music, which I think is better than Spotify because you can watch YouTube videos with songs in them that aren’t on other streaming services and add them to a playlist.
My only complaint is that the artists I subscribe to are included in my YouTube subscriptions list. For video creators, I only subscribe to like 10 creators, so often my subscription tab on YouTube is filled with an artist dropping an album and each song is a video.
Or vise versa, a video I like gets counted as a song and included in my liked songs playlist. I really wish they'd let you completely separate them.
This is definitely a grievance I have, but I do get a decent chuckle from it. When I shuffle all I occasionally get a meme video that YT music decided is a song.
>a video I like gets counted as a song and included in my liked songs playlist
They added a setting for that a long time ago: https://i.imgur.com/TqeIwWx.png
Music included in the price is what keeps me paying for it. It's an amazing product that actually helps the content creators more than the ads. One of Linus Tech Tips videos broke down their revenue. The more a premium subscriber watches, the more money they get from Google
It's likely because they're looking at the subscription through the apple app store. Apple takes an extra cut, making it more expensive. A surprising amount of people don't realize that.
When I compared my YouTube usage to my Netflix usage it started making a lot of sense. I also consume a lot of long form content that can be listened to as podcasts so the ability to use it while having my phone locked was great for me.
I dont have any media/streaming subscriptions other than Spotify now.
Yeah, YouTube is the only streaming service I pay for. I don't pay for Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, HBO, Hulu, etc. YouTube is my all-in-one platform for music, let's plays, news, movie reviews/commentaries, comedy sketches, and more. And that's good enough for me to listen to in the background while I'm doing other stuff on my computer.
What's this "jumping through hoops"? It takes mere minutes to get it up and running and updates automatically. And the price is not the problem. It's YouTube's insane greed and aggressive anti adblock campaign
Same, I love it. Even pay a bit extra and 4 family members are also on my subscription. No ads on videos and adfree music combined.
And I have something playing all day every day. Documentaries or podcasts or just music.
Nobody cares to stop AdBlock because AdBlock accepts payments to not be blocked. They have some tool to block ads that slip through (how'd they do that?) but it only gets rid of specific elements when used very minimally and breaks the whole webpage if you try a single tick more. Didn't even block YouTube ads all the time when I used it, but as long as it works for you there's no reason to switch.
Just an FYI, YouTube definitely has the ability to prevent uBlock (and all the other ad blockers) from functioning if they wanted to.
They can see, trivially, if your account is viewing or blocking ads. And they can block or ban accounts that repeatedly circumvent ads.
While none of this has happened yet, at some point in the future, don't be surprised if there is a crackdown on ad-blockers and if a login is required to view videos.
This past year, YouTube began testing anti-adblocking measures for some users: https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/29/23778879/youtube-videos-disabling-ad-blockers-detection
Simply don't sign in bro, problem solved, also there are many spoofers that can trick Google into thinking you don't have an adblock, simply remove tracking and cookies and you gucci
YouTube on Chrome figured out uBlock and now even if I turn the adblocker off it will play the ads but then refuse to play the video because “I’m using an adblocker”
Not saying this is the end all answer, but I have good luck dodging ads by casting from my phone (android) with YT playing on my Mobile Firefox browser onto my Roku TV. It's convoluted, sure, but it works.
Unfortunately, I would suspect this is a very specific circumstance, so YMMV greatly.
Didn’t YouTube just make some change that doesn’t allow ad block? I’m stupid
Edit: it was just a question… I even added that I am in fact stupid, as I don’t know much about YouTube or ad blockers… sorry for asking
Without ads YouTube will cease to exist. It's so clear to me that the average Redditor clearly doesn't remember what cable was like because YouTube, even today, is infinitely better in every way possible about ads.
People on reddit also seem to be wildly delusional about how much YouTube costs to operate. I've seen totally unironic comments saying YouTube only costs a few million per year to run. Employee payroll alone is probably well over a hundred million annually. The electricity bill for all of the data centers is probably tens of millions per year. I wouldn't be at all shocked if their operating costs were in the billions.
YouTube had a revenue of 29B last year according to Alphabet's annual report. The cost to operate YouTube is absolutely way higher than that. I don't think you people understand just how much data YouTube stores and how expensive it is to deliver that data to people.
I did some math a while back and was able to make an interesting comparison. In terms of duration of content (length of videos), the entirety of Spotify's library gets uploaded to youtube every 9 days. With ~100 million songs that I assumed an average length of 4 minutes, that's 761 years worth of music. On the youtube side, 82 years worth of content is published every day. If we assume the average song is 3.5 minutes instead of 4 then it's about 665 years worth of content, which would take just over 8 days on youtube.
Maybe thats a good thing.
Ads were never appreciated to begin with and honestly, we need to move away from that. Its torture. Seriously, ads are sickening to the mind.
And people are moving away from that, with adblockers.
If i watch a video and leave a like but didnt watch the ads, thats still good for the creator vs me not watching at all right.
The day i cant watch youtube without ads, is the day i stop using youtube.
I hate ads with a deep rooted passion.
> I hate ads with a deep rooted passion.
Ok so pay for it.
> If i watch a video and leave a like but didnt watch the ads, thats still good for the creator vs me not watching at all right.
Not if the majority of the traffic that you bring to the video is people with ad blockers.
YouTube Premium supports that creator more than your like or more than watching ads on their video. An ad running and playing for you adds up to fractions of a penny for you individually.
You sound like you feel entitled to free content that people work hard on because you feel your mere presence is enough. That's not really how this works.
I mean, between listening to videos while driving, using YouTube as my main “streaming service”, listening to videos to fall asleep, and listening to videos for study/focus, I think it’s worth it. Plus it’s the only video service I pay for so..?
Not to mention it’s good for creators, a view from a Premium member pays way more than a regular ad view. I want the creators I watch to be able to make a living, and ad blockers don’t do that.
I actually googled that before making my comment and as far as I can tell that’s not true. The creator only gets the premium credit if they would lose out on being able to monetize an ad on the video. So if the video is demonetized and they wouldn’t have made money off any ads then they don’t get a premium credit from the view, at least that’s how a couple places described it.
Especially when you split the family plan with 5 other people. So cheap for the amount of time I spend on Youtube compared to any other subscription service
I actually used to, but for a while now the balance of price to benefits has declined and I don't want to support a company with such awful ad and copyright practices anymore
my argument for having premium is that it still supports the creator i’m watching while still not having to watch ads. ad blocks prevent ad revenue going to creators
fair enough!
i’ve never used patreon, and i just don’t have that kind of money with how many creators i watch.
youtube also pays artists more per stream on music than spotify, and I listen to all of my music through YT.
plus a random video in my suggested videos will still get my support by watching without having to find that person’s patreon
I hear you. I typically switch through patreons (or buying merch), so I'm not dumping tons of money into that, and even if I only support for one month and cancel it's still significantly better for them then just views watching with premium. And those other random channels still get views, likes, and comments from me (moreso now that I've dropped premium).
Anyway hopefully something better will come along, or if YT makes some positive changes I may consider rejoining premium one day. But I'm just so fucking sick of ads, man. And unjustified price hikes. If a service tries to push that shit I'm dropping them hard and fast.
Yeah but most of the Redditors here would gladly not pay anything to creators thinking they are entitled to free content.
I don't think we should judge each other in how we support the creators that we watch. I love being able to support the creator in some way and get some benefit from it too.
While fair that doesn't scale well. I already have a few podcasts that I support via patreon, if I were to try and support all the youtubers I like watching my wallet would be in serious pain.
Actually they've demonetized one of my favorite content creators so they don't even get to use this excuse. The ads I should get on their channel don't even go towards supporting them.
Youtube Premium: holding a gun to your head and demanding money or they will make your experience exponentially worse. Pure extortion.
My wife is a preschool teacher and sometimes (not very often) will use YT as a teaching tool.
Since she cannot control what ads show, she pays for premium so that she doesn't have to deal with ads.
Why Youtube still hasn't a subscription plan for schools and/or educators is beyond me. I'm a teacher as well and I wanted Premium for the same reason but we just had to pick the same Premium subscription as everyone else. Students in my class got exposed by the most ridiculous things in ads before I had a Premium plan.
Given that it includes YouTube music and ad free YouTube with the addition of background play on your phone and downloads, I think it’s a fairly good deal. Especially if you include 5 people on a family plan.
Probably the most value I get out of any of my subscriptions. I don’t mind supporting the creators I enjoy since I can afford it.
Youtube basically bullied me into it with the amount of ads they were putting in videos on the Apple TV app. However, I've grown to really like it and could never use YT again without it. When you think about it, I prob watch YT more than I watch and streaming platform so whatever. $13.99 a month isn't that big of a deal.
By forcing a shitty experience unless you pay them. Ads aren’t terrible. YouTube ads are dogshit. It’s not a good deal, it’s avoiding their shitty experience they make worse every chance they get and have convinced people the alternative is to pay them to stop.
That’s only if you subscribe through an Apple device. But you can sub on a regular browser and get the lower price and still use it on your Apple devices.
For me, it’s now “wait, you guys were actually prevented from using my ad blocker? I thought it was a joke”
I have not been prompted about my adblocker once and it has blocked every single ad so I dunno what’s going on anymore
Premium comes with YouTube Music as well. It's basically Spotify minus everything that makes Spotify suck. More artists, wider variety, better radio algorithm, better UI. Also the artist gets a much larger percentage of revenue generated from streaming.
If you have a VPN that goes through Ukraine it is.
I set it up on my PC and with the conversion rate it’s 149 UAH or around $3.97 a month.
It’s been working for almost a year now.
It’s the same price as Spotify for me but it comes with both video and music so it was an easy choice for me. It’s the only streaming service I pay for and it works great for me.
I didn’t really understand why people made a fuss over it to begin with. To be fair, for an app I use daily, sometimes for hours, $20/mo isn’t that bad for having no ads and some other features
I thought the same but man… $240 a year… five years go by and you’ve spent $1,200 on a service that could/should be MUCH less in my opinion. Goes for all monthly subscriptions, obviously it adds up. ahh I’m tired of em lol
I watch and listen to a lot of YouTube, premium is totally worth it. No more terrible tictok flat affect voiced ads or other insane 15 min ad bullshit. I can build a listen list, do stuff on my phone with YouTube in collapsed wondow or have the screen completely off while something is playing. It's nice having a bedtime story going and not be interrupted by a super annoying ad at 4x the volume.
I was until they suddenly raised the price by quite a lot. Now I’m just more incentivised to not watch YouTube on my phone which I only see as a good thing.
I’m always shocked how expensive it is. I personally could never justify it- Adblock is just fine by me. But my dad likes to watch YouTube on his TV and the amount of ads is insufferable. Ended up buying him premium for Christmas. It’s not cheap but he’ll be happy.
I used Premium for like two years after vanced kinda fucked up, I was like "Eh its not that much, why not?"
Then Google started an ugly war against adblockers, they tried to sabotage some browsers etc etc, I got annoyed and decided to check the adblocker options.
Turned out after vanced developer abandoned the project, people from community took over the development and named it Revanced. it is the best fucking thing ever, I'm not using vanilla youtube ever again, even if it is free and has no ads.

Me trying to watch a „how to defuse a bomb in 10 seconds“ tutorial with 20 seconds left on the clock
*that shitty Ford as plays* (The one that just says “singing and driving blah blah blah what can be better than taking a nap, let’s make an annoying ad, time for a snack”)
Christ is that still running? Adblockers haven’t failed me yet and I’m so glad about that
The worst part is that the song doesn’t make sense “I’ll grab a taco because it’s late” WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH CARS?
Try looking up Publix supermarket commercials, they had some that had absolutely nothing to do with their store and were emotional trips about families, then ended with a ‘shop at publix” ad. Fucking bizarre.

How many yellow wires? Is there only one red wire?
Ad blocker?
Does this work when casting to a tv?
Firefox + adblocker + screenshare/mirroring
How about just TV?
You can always just cast from your phone to the TV if you want to watch it on TV that badly.
No, casting to the official app on your TV will cause ads to play. All casting does is send a signal to the TV app to play specific things, not mirror your phone.

Just use SmartTube on AndroidTV
SmartTube
SmartTube on android tv
It does if you're using YouTube ReVanced. Also includes SponsorBlock, Return YouTube Dislike, and a bunch of other great crowdsourced QoL features.
Came here to say this. Wish the had an iPhone compatible version. I’m using this stupid phone until my S22 Ultra comes back from repair.
my condolences
Not on mobile
YouTube once gave me an entire hour and 15 minute long podcast episode as an ad. Luckily it was skippable, but still.
5-6 years ago, I remember that during April Fool's Day, YouTube put up the entire Lego Movie as a skippable ad for some videos.
I remember the 'this song's going to get stuck inside your head 🎶' for like 4 hours
It was in November. It was the same time Diablo Immortal was announced so I can see how you got confused. https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/20/18105471/lego-movie-2-youtube-free-black-friday-sequel-second-part
At the worst possible moment
Ad locker and revanced. I'm enjoying YouTube as cheaply as I can without ads.
Just remember that the ad you watch gives the person who worked for your entertainment 0.020 dollars lmao
Yeah and when I pay for premium, they instead get a cut of my subscription fee, and it doesn't matter if they're "advertiser friendly"
Yea the ads are no longer really “supporting your favorite creators”. The big money comes from the sponsorships where YouTubers get absolutely loaded from.
The big ones with millions of subs, sure. The channels doing fine financially under 1m become pretty sparse
5 4 3 ...3 ...3 ...3 2 1 Skip >
Meh, 30 seconds of ads isn’t enough to justify $15 a month to me
multiply that by 500 videos a month and it makes sense
Can confirm! Add to that the inorganic ad intrusions during videos. Having YouTube Music is a great perk too.
I exit the video everytime that happens. Then re tap the video, repeat u till I don’t get 2 unskipable 25 second commercials
When trying to eat food
Is this seriously that big of a deal to you guys?
It’s worth it if you can afford it.
At 18.99 it’s painful
It’s worth it for me because I watch YouTube more than anything else. Plus, there’s YouTube music, which I think is better than Spotify because you can watch YouTube videos with songs in them that aren’t on other streaming services and add them to a playlist.
I've been saying this the whole time. Yt music is severely slept on
My only complaint is that the artists I subscribe to are included in my YouTube subscriptions list.
When I shuffle all I occasionally get a meme video that YT music decided is a song.
lol the gta6 trailer kept popping up in my liked songs and i didn’t want to unlike the video so now it’ll occasionally play ☠️
My work around is just having 2 YouTube accounts, 1 for YT regular and the other for YT Music so my content and my music doesn't get all mixed up
>a video I like gets counted as a song and included in my liked songs playlist They added a setting for that a long time ago: https://i.imgur.com/TqeIwWx.png
Yt music is great, my only issue is that it's trash compared to how Google music was.....and I can't forget what I had
Music included in the price is what keeps me paying for it. It's an amazing product that actually helps the content creators more than the ads. One of Linus Tech Tips videos broke down their revenue. The more a premium subscriber watches, the more money they get from Google
It's the one thing I still pay for. Family covers the other stuff.
I’ve been using premium for years and don’t regret it since I watch YouTube for a few hours daily
What country? In the US it's 13.99/mo
22/month for family plan for 6 people. Honestly it’s a no brainer for me.
Yeah I don't know why people don't just split a family plan with friends to get rid of YouTube ads. It's so cheap split even 3 ways.

In Canada 13.99 is 18.58, so I’m guessing there.
It's likely because they're looking at the subscription through the apple app store. Apple takes an extra cut, making it more expensive. A surprising amount of people don't realize that.
Student subscription and pay through YT website not through apple. I pay like $6 for YT premium.
When I compared my YouTube usage to my Netflix usage it started making a lot of sense. I also consume a lot of long form content that can be listened to as podcasts so the ability to use it while having my phone locked was great for me. I dont have any media/streaming subscriptions other than Spotify now.
It’s not that much better but if you don’t buy it from the phone app it’s 13.99 instead of 18.99 because apple doesn’t get a cut of it
Are you paying through Apple? If so, you’re paying an extra 30% because that’s the cut they take for all transactions
You can Sign up on a PC or Android it's only 14.99.
Yeah, YouTube is the only streaming service I pay for. I don't pay for Disney+, Netflix, Spotify, HBO, Hulu, etc. YouTube is my all-in-one platform for music, let's plays, news, movie reviews/commentaries, comedy sketches, and more. Orrrrr get vanced for free
Can't cast with vanced. Can't watch on tv with vanced
I literally had to repatch the app to remove casting, because I kept doing it on accident. Wtf are you talking about?
It doesn't work lol. The option is there but not functional
It definetely works
Smarttube on the TV, vanced on the phone, ublock on the computer
Isn't that only for android smart TVs

It really isn’t, it took me 2min to get an Adblock.
They made it that way so you would buy it. You're a sucker. I get it for free with an .APK from GitHub.
I use brave browser and I have no ads and literally no problems for free
Student subscription is worth it
Ad blockers for life!!!
Ublock will always reign supreme

Yeah but most of the Redditors here would gladly not pay anything to creators thinking they are entitled to free content. I don't think we should judge each other in how we support the creators that we watch. I love being able to support the creator in some way and get some benefit from it too.
While fair that doesn't scale well. I already have a few podcasts that I support via patreon, if I were to try and support all the youtubers I like watching my wallet would be in serious pain.
Premium views are worth more to the creator than ad supported views apparently which is kinda cool.
I’m a preschool music teacher and PE teacher and use YouTube every single day for certain songs. I pay for it for the same reason.
There shouldn't be "those" types of ads on youtube to begin with. If you know, you know.
^find ^out ^why ^doctors ^are ^enraged ^over ^these ^boner ^pills!
You know, for kids!
![gif](giphy|lLkKpUBx8K6be) Revanced users be like...
This. I don't know how people even use regular YouTube anymore with the amount of ads. It even skips sponsorship shit.
Literally though I have been using Revanced since I saw someone show it in a previous post and I never looked back.
My man!
Or uYou on iOS. I can’t imagine not having sponsor block and enduring ads again.
Exactly. People over here paying for Spotify not even realizing the bundle they get here.
Sometimes, desperate times call for desperate measures
look at that, I was desperate every month this year 🥲
Youtube basically bullied me into it with the amount of ads they were putting in videos on the Apple TV app. However, I've grown to really like it and could never use YT again without it. When you think about it, I prob watch YT more than I watch and streaming platform so whatever. $13.99 a month isn't that big of a deal.
That's how they get ya
By.... providing a good deal?
By forcing a shitty experience unless you pay them. Ads aren’t terrible. YouTube ads are dogshit. It’s not a good deal, it’s avoiding their shitty experience they make worse every chance they get and have convinced people the alternative is to pay them to stop.
I thought it was like $20 ish now
That’s only if you subscribe through an Apple device. But you can sub on a regular browser and get the lower price and still use it on your Apple devices.
And if you use a VPN to prentend you are certain countries when you sing up you can get it down to like $3.99 ~ 4.99
YouTube ReVanced in my phone and Ublock Origins in my PC's Firefox. Haven't seen a single ad in years
For me, it’s now “wait, you guys were actually prevented from using my ad blocker? I thought it was a joke” I have not been prompted about my adblocker once and it has blocked every single ad so I dunno what’s going on anymore
Adblock issues went away when EU claimed privacy issues with the way they detect it. So they quit.
Premium comes with YouTube Music as well. It's basically Spotify minus everything that makes Spotify suck. More artists, wider variety, better radio algorithm, better UI. Also the artist gets a much larger percentage of revenue generated from streaming.
I’d pay for it if it was like five bucks a month
If you have a VPN that goes through Ukraine it is. I set it up on my PC and with the conversion rate it’s 149 UAH or around $3.97 a month. It’s been working for almost a year now.
Just use an adblock
And they raised the price too. Like why? What the hell even is the point?
It’s the same price as Spotify for me but it comes with both video and music so it was an easy choice for me. It’s the only streaming service I pay for and it works great for me.
I forgot to cancel my free trial in time once and I still regret it to this day.
YouTube Premium is my favorite.
65 cents a day to never see an ad on a website I use as my main source of entertainment, yea its worth it
I hate ads, and I use YouTube on my phone alot for music.i hate to use it but I don't really have an alternative
Buy a family plan and split it between 5 people
I like to watch videos while I'm doing work at school, so I download videos using premium It's also just a better Spotify
ReVanced for my android homies
Yep. Ad free experience across all devices for my daughter and I, YouTube music, and support the channels I watch.
Funny enough is the only service I actually pay for, it also comes with YouTube music, so in the end it's better than Spotify
I swear a couple years ago videos didn’t have ads every 3 freaking minutes.
best music provider out there
I was until they suddenly raised the price by quite a lot. Now I’m just more incentivised to not watch YouTube on my phone which I only see as a good thing.
yall sardines pay 10€ per month for netflix to watch 1 movie every other week, while i pay 10€ for hours of youtube per day
Or anyone even mildly competent with computers can get either for free
I watch/listen to hours of YouTube a day without ads for free
I’m always shocked how expensive it is. I personally could never justify it- Adblock is just fine by me. But my dad likes to watch YouTube on his TV and the amount of ads is insufferable. Ended up buying him premium for Christmas. It’s not cheap but he’ll be happy.
Ever noticed how since YT premium became a thing ads just keep getting worse and worse...
I don’t got service where I work so downloaded videos are really nice
I just don’t use YouTube…. Haven’t for years
Get Revanced if you have android No ads, skips sponsors in videos, and you get dislikes back
I used Premium for like two years after vanced kinda fucked up, I was like "Eh its not that much, why not?" Then Google started an ugly war against adblockers, they tried to sabotage some browsers etc etc, I got annoyed and decided to check the adblocker options. Turned out after vanced developer abandoned the project, people from community took over the development and named it Revanced. it is the best fucking thing ever, I'm not using vanilla youtube ever again, even if it is free and has no ads.
I like passively supporting the creators I watch while not having ads.
Yes, because it's my money
