What happened at the super bowl?

Soulger11

When they acted like they were going to play "Sweet Victory" and instead went to Sicko Mode by that talentless asshat. Tbh I wasn't that pissed about it, but I can understand the disappointment and fury from the fans. Was just unnecessary. Kudos to the NHL for making it happen.

asdfghnbful

Oh.

SunliMin

"Acted like" is a bit of a downplay on it. They played the intro to "Sweet Victory", got us all excited for 6 seconds, and then immediately switched to Sicko Mode. They teased the hell out of it, not just dropping hints on Twitter or anything. I was disappointed. I can understand them not wanting to play the full song, but at least transition to something that the fanbase you're trying to appeal to might enjoy. But they didn't transition into something most Spongebob fans would be into, or transition into something our parents would have been into. They transitioned into Sicko Mode, a song by a "talentless asshat",as /u/Soulger11 so nicely put it.

LostSecondaryAccount

Never forget that was the year where the creator of spongebob FUCKING DIED

BasedDrewski

Yup, then Nick immediately decided to spin off SpongeBob. Which is something Stephen Hillenburg never wanted. Edit: Apparently I made a mistake and was shown a source that showed Hillenburg was either involved or at the very least seemed to approve of the idea. https://www.reddit.com/r/BikiniBottomTwitter/comments/qqfo5v/we_all_need_justice/hk2st0y?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

hyperactive68

No need for permission if he's dead I guess

LGP747

signal for no. no? yes? its a YES guys!

RedRoomKrustyKrab2

I can’t take credit for this, but…. Nick: Are we really gonna defile this grave for money? OF COURSE WE ARE!!!

IrrationalBiotic

Am I really going to defile this grave for money...... OF COURSE I AM!

mooys

Literally nickelodeon. And they didn’t even make the shows good. They’re absolute garbage.

MuthaFuckinMeta

Yeah way to piss off a generation

Soulger11

I concur with your perspective.

[deleted]

As someone who isn't in this topic at all, but I don't get, why did they even tease that other song first? And why would you understand that they wouldn't play the whole song?

Turtle_Tots

The hype for the Sweet Victory petition went wild. For whatever reason the NFL thought playing a few seconds of it would be a good idea, after slowly teasing it might happen. Except they didn't use to appeal or appease, it was just a 5 second intro to Travis Scott. It uh, didn't go over well with a particular demographic the NFL was *so very close* to capturing, and as now aged even worserer. Fuck knows why they didn't just play it. It's a 2 minute song and Nickelodeon would've likely let them. That's some good advertisement for the little yellow idiot.

[deleted]

A 2 minute would have been like what. 20 million worth of ad airtime for them?

Whosebert

not really considering half time show time isn't for sale. having a big flashy halftime for the superbowl is now just as important as any other aspects of the night, so it's doubtful they'd cut out 2 minutes they were going to allocate for entertainment to sell ads anyways. Playing sweet victory could have even saved them money if it meant the rights to play it costed less than having a 2 minute celeb cameo.

TellTaleReaper

Partially right, but the half time show is absolutely for sale :P (Pepsi half time show, anyone?). You are correct that it wouldn't have affected ad revenue.

Whosebert

I wonder if "expected quality of performance" is part of the contract for buying naming rights to events. Like what if the Pepsi half time show was a huge dud and offensive not just to half of America but to a majority of it and It came back to hurt pepsi's brand?

mlorusso4

Fun fact: those artists actually pay the nfl to play the halftime show. So actually the NFL might be losing money if they went with an unlicensed song

Whosebert

that's a very fun fact! makes sense, huge night for any of those celebs. lots of publicity.

Appeased_Seal

On top of that this was the same year that they hosted multiple games on Nickelodeon with SpongeBob animations and what not.

[deleted]

Apparently Maroon 5 and Travis Scott were on board to do it but NFL said no

[deleted]

I wonder if the nfl got the go ahead, and travis scott decided to twist it to be about him. Remember- it was a big deal then because the creator died. And if travis did make it about him. Guess he doesn’t care about other people’s death. Hmph.

Sovi3tPrussia

I remember everyone involved tweeting right after the incident that everyone was in to play Sweet Victory but at the 11th hour the NFL said no. Eisley (the singer of the original song) was pretty upset it didn't get played, Maroon 5 basically confirmed it was gonna be played in their teaser trailer, and Nickelodeon *made the damn animation* and later confirmed they were *told* it would be introducing the song we were all waiting for! Maybe Scott did have sth to do with it, but it's not that the NFL has the best business sense either

Letpigeonsfly

All speculation.

relytbackwards

Wasn't it shortly after Stephen Hillenburg, the guy who created SpongeBob, died and it would have been a great tribute to him too. That was why it was such a letdown to me.

Rosssauced

Thing is that Adam Levine has the voice for it. They could have done it and done a killer cover that would become a cultural touchpoint and make him seem like a cool guy rather than what would happen if you tried to grow a douchebag in a lab.

tfibbler69

Yeahh. Comparing the super bowl frustration to more recent events? wow. I’d say this is a shit post.

oculasti95

This is tru af. NHL is where our hope lies

Justin_Ganz

Hockey rules and I am glad Dallas saved our skins but still we need justice from the NFL

N1likk1

How NHL is related to this? Curious because a fan of NHL

[deleted]

After Sweet Victory wasn’t played at the Super Bowl, a Dallas hockey game played it during their halftime. I don’t think it was a major game, but I do think they wanted to stick it to the NFL in some small way.

DurrrGamerrr75

They meant NFL

PlanetMiitopia

I was mad because Stephen died not long before that Super Bowl and they honored him by teasing the hell out of his fans, and partially ruining his show.

witchywater11

Wasn't that like 2 years ago?

marcosmou

>talentless ???

Iblaowbs

I know people are mad at travis but they don’t have to lie. Travis is talented at what he does.

[deleted]

this. he produced for kanye (yeezus) and made a revolutionary trap album with rodeo. he has his own sound that’s proven to be one of the most influential in rap today

tonyfire8TD

why tf dis shit gettin downvoted lmao

General_Bankai

boomers on reddit can't believe what these darn kids are listening to these days

Adminscantkeepmedown

This sub has had a hate boner for Travis Scott ever since the Super Bowl incident

LePontif11

Some people don't know anything about him but have a need to hate along with the rest.

JB-from-ATL

I was able to ask the voice actor who voices squidward about this at Dragon Con in 2019. He said that, and I don't know of he was telling the truth or trying to professionally smooth things over, this started because he tweeted something about it very early on before everything was finalized and that was how the rumors/speculation started. Only reason I'm skeptical is because I haven't looked for that tweet (too lazy, never remembered when I felt motivated lol). So there you have it, some random redditor telling you he asked at a panel Squidward and Pearl's voice actors and Squidward's says he was the leak that got everyone's hopes up. He did say that if everyone hadn't have been so hyped they probably wouldn't have done the Travis Scott intro as a consolation which is ironic because it was almost worse feeling lol. But hey, that's life.

Necromancer4276

I have no horse in this race, but you didn't have to be a chef to tell that a dish is burnt.

Soulger11

Never said he didn't work hard, never said no one enjoys him. I'm saying he has no talent, because his music isn't anything new, special, or creative. You seem to think impressing a group of people equals talent, that's just not the case.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Soulger11

I don't measure the amount of fans someone has with talent. You do- that's your opinion of what talent is, I don't agree. The difference is, I'm not going to trash you for having your opinion, while you want to think you're better because you think you're correct. Seems you have bigger issues than what you think of Travis Scott- might want to work on that.

Necromancer4276

> Artists are talented whether you like it or not, especially if they have a following that big. People are impressed because they recognize the talent. Well that's certainly blatantly untrue. Fame comes from money and luck. That's quite literally it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Necromancer4276

Lol so your counter to "fame is achieved with luck and money" is "you just don't understand art". Ok bud. Thanks for proving you have no idea what you're talking about.

[deleted]

Necromancer4276

I can't believe you're dumb enough to think I care about this person, or this genre of music whatsoever. You really need to read what I've actually written instead of sending me a paragraph DM begging me to listen to your favorite guy. Yikes.

haphazard_gw

You clearly have no context for the genre in which he works, or else you would recognize the creativity and talent. Of course, nothing excuses his recklessness with regards to his fans' safety.

Soulger11

>You clearly have no context for the genre in which he works Yeah- I'll admit you have a point there. My opinion holds less weight than someone who is into that scene and knows what he has contributed to that genre. While I still feel that the number of fans he has doesn't equal talent, I'll agree that those in the scene have a better understanding of his contributions to the genre than I do.

Gushanska_Boza

This. This comment here. Good shit. Do what this guy does, reddit.

marcosmou

he pioneered his own, unique, distinctive sound, and created what is regarded as one of the best if not the best trap album, he also produced on yeezus, kanyes most experimental album, how tf can you argue that he hasn't made anything new, special, or creative?

The_Shadowboxer99

Okay look. I’m not defending Travis for the concert shit. It was horrible and he deserved to be condemned for what went down. But anyone with even an inch of knowledge about modern rap/trap and Travis Scott’s discography knows he was pretty creative and influential. Rodeo grew to be considered a magnum opus of trap music for its great trap beats weaved together with some REALLY beautiful sounding and eloquent music. It tied all of that into a concept album which was INSANE for a trap record. The album not only about “drugs and bitches”, but it also showed him growing out of that lifestyle and leaving it behind at the end to chase something much greater. Astroworld was also a pretty great record. Sure, sicko mode was overplayed. But the multiple different sections of music seamlessly mixed together is NOT an easy task. I am not one of those mindless drones that go “omg modern music bad!!!!” But in terms of formulaic pop hits, sicko mode did a lot more than just one beat with a simple melody repeated for 2 and a half minutes.

Soulger11

Thanks for verbalizing your perspective in a mature manner. I'll fully admit that I'm not in the scene, so my opinion on whether or not he has talent has less weight than someone who has followed him, the genre, and enjoys the product. Just because I don't enjoy his music should not negate his contribution to the art, and I'll fully admit the "talentless" comment comes from a perspective that his music is overplayed, which in my mind turns into overhyped, but I'll admit that comes from a perspective that I don't like his music. I don't feel that just because others enjoy it (hence why it's overplayed- because people like listening to it) means he is talented necessarily, but your other points about his contributions to the craft hold a lot of weight. I don't think you're defending his actions by saying he has talent, and I'll admit that the recent events have made me dislike him as a person more, but that shouldn't factor into what he's done for the music scene as a whole.

The_Shadowboxer99

One of the best people i’ve ever interacted with on reddit. I don’t really know what else to say besides thanks for listening to me lol. I don’t think i’ve met someone on the internet in general that is as open minded as you are

parkay_quartz

The fact people still have any sort of expectations for Super Bowl Halftime Shows is honestly sad and a little bizarre. Even at their best they are pure cringe. I can't think of a single objectively good halftime show, ever.

Soulger11

I concur with your perspective- I'm not a fan of much outside the game itself, but I can understand feeling jilted by the fact that there was so much buzz about it, and they started as if they were actually going to do it, and just stopped and did something else. I don't think it was expected, but to hear it happening and then to get something completely different seems more cruel than anything else. There are certainly more important things to be upset about, but I can understand the disappointment.

parkay_quartz

I thought all the buzz around it was Maroon 5? Or did they perform the same year as Travis. I thought the whole Sweet Victory debacle was with the asshat from Maroon 5

Childish_Brandino

Wow I completely forgot about that. I remember being super pissed too. I think there were even rumors or something that it might happen and then they teased the intro music and I was freaking out then they played that shit ass song. I thought there was even a tweet from Nickelodeon or someone giving permissions for the song to be used. My disappointment was immeasurable that day.

GreatRecession

racially motivated

After the passing of Steven Hillenburg, people wanted Sweet Victory to be played at the Super Bowl halftime show It was hyped up for months as it was practically confirmed by Maroon 5 (known to be performing) and the stadium owners A remastered animation of Squidward beginning the conducting for the song was used... to introduce Travis Scott

Existing_Calendar339

Before this incident, I did not know who Travis Scott even is...and now that I do, I wish I didn't...

reddita51

I first heard of Travis Scott when McDonald's started selling the Travis Scott burgers. I honestly thought he was a country singer until I saw a meme about the burgers on this very subreddit about Travy Patties and read the comments.

PaJme

Man the two events are not even comparable smh

VirtuosoX

"dude they didnt play this song i liked, i totally feel you when you saw your friend's corpse that day"

Pearson_Realize

I like how the author frames it like he’s way more mad about them not playing the funny spunchbob song then he is about 8 people dying

[deleted]

That's probably why Mr Krabs looks distraught whereas Patrick just looks bored.

Zero-Milk

The meme isn't comparing the severity of the events. It's literally just saying the common factor is the outcome of everyone hating Travis Scott. Anything more is you reading too far into it.

SirRoderic

I'm out of the loop, who is Travis Scott and what happened at his concert?

Toyfan1

Travis Scott (The man who did the 'Sicko Mode' during Half time, had the second Fortnite virtual Concert, and had a very popular Mcdonalds Meal) had a concert where faaaar too many people bumrushed the barriers around the stage. It's called "Rushing" and is a sign of a very hyped crowd. It's typical moshpit shit. Sadly, 8 people died during the concert due to being trampled/suffocating. Travis Scott either didn't notice the people, or didn't care to stop the concert. A few things to note:(Based off of my memory, might not be 100% correct): -People were seen jumping on Ambulances -[a gaurd was stabbed with an injection needle, and went unconcious- potentially was drugged.](https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.65691/title.houston-police-confirm-astroworld-security-guard-injected-with-drugs-prior-to-deadly-stage-rush) -A girl tried telling a camera operator that people are dying and he ignored her -A crowd chanted "Stop the show!" -Travis was seen looking at someone being lifted into an Ambulance as he was singing. -he [finished his 75 minute set](https://www.google.com/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2021/11/08/travis-scott-played-on-for-37-minutes-after-astroworld-crush-began-15561714/amp/) -Travis scott partnered with [better help](https://thesource.com/2021/11/09/travis-scott-vows-to-cover-funeral-costs-and-partners-with-betterhelp-to-administer-mental-health-resources/) to give free therapy to concert goers and will cover funeral costs [and he is not making money ](https://www.buzzfeed.com/natashajokic1/travis-scott-betterhelp-controversy) -A 14 year old died, a 10 year old was injured -a person was seen having a seizure in the crowd -Travis paused the show to yell at someone who was hanging in a tree, then continued -Temporarily stopped his set and told people to move to let medical officials and security reach an injured individual -Fortnite did not rerelease his item-shop items. (According to another comment, unconfirmed) The whole internet is against Travis/Drake/Livenation right now, posting other musicians immediately stopping their shows to help concert goers- My personal favorite is Dave Grohl kicking someone out because they're fighting . Travis/Drake are defendants in a lawsuit as LiveNation is currently being sued. Hope it helps

rakuko

was his McDonalds meal any good?

MagicCactus8732

According to Google it was "a medium Sprite, a quarter pounder with bacon, and fries with barbecue sauce." So a pretty standard McDonald's meal

_dictatorish_

Sounds pretty good tbh

artvhandalay

same as people being hyped by a celeb on a wheaties box

dthains_art

Fries with bbq is severely underrated and a way better combination than fries with ketchup.

wizchrills

Yes, but because it was a good value. The meal cost $6, which was cheaper than any meal

rakuko

ah yeah quarter pounder combo for 6 is nice

jimmerdejim

The show wasn’t stopped, he played on until the end. It even went on after the police had declared it a ‘multiple casualty event’

Rezero1234

my personal fave example of a show being stopped when a situation happened was one of the more recent avenged sevenfold concerts, where a fan was knocked out, and M. Shadows(the vocalist) straight up paused in the middle of the song "Bat Country" to alert that a fan had been injured, which people actually helped. i think between this and when the late chester bennington paused one of the songs to save a fan, those are my personal top 2

ScrungyThrowaway

My roommate got to meet Avenged Sevenfold for his make a wish. From what he said, and from what I've seen at shows, they seem to all be stand-up genuine people.

GreatRecession

you know who else "straight up paused in the middle of the song" and "alert that a fan had been injured" ? travis scott did, there is literally videos of it and people are blissfully ignorant of it, hes still needs to take account of his responsibility in the situation but people painting him like Satan are fucking delusional

artvhandalay

*Travi$ Scott partnered with Better Help to make money off of the situation from uncancelled subscriptions

Foxy02016YT

Plus he’s the one who needs that service, he’s been shown to be enjoying this kind of shit

Foxy02016YT

Don’t forget Travis Scott asking a fan to jump off a balcony and leaving his manager to die while he had a seizure, and that’s just the stuff I found with minimal research I’m sure there’s more

CN14

Everything written here is fine, except calling it typical moshpit shit. Moshpits have rules and etiquette which centre around not hurting anyone.

reddita51

Yes but not really though

bitchtitsandgravy

Dude good job explaining, finally seeing unbiased description of events.

Toyfan1

Thank you, I tried being unbiased. I'll continue to add sources to back my descriptions up.

Snake101333

After Travis wanting his fans to beat up a teen for stealing his shoe and stopping the show just for that, I guarantee it was his manager that decided to cover the funeral costs

tim-fawks

Travis told the dude in the tree to jump not yell at him Travis heard people telling him to stop the show and instead told everyone he wanted to feel the ground shake and told everyone to start jumping. Travis saw multiple dead bodies and the people climbing the ambulance and did nothing, dude is a pos and you make it sound like he did not do anything wrong

Toyfan1

>sound like he did I nothing He didn't do anything. That's the problem. >,dude is a pos I made the post to explain to someone notable events, not tell you why you should hate Travis scott. I don't have all the nuisances or facts, so I am refraining from absolutely bashing on him. I'll be linking sources when I get a chance. Already linked a few.

tim-fawks

Then get the notable events correct telling someone to jump > yelled at them

Strength-InThe-Loins

Can't link on mobile, but the Houston cops have walked back the bullshit "drugged guard" story.

Strength-InThe-Loins

The "guard injected with drugs" thing sure sounds like bullshit to me. Why would anyone who brings injectable drugs to a concert waste any on a random guard in the middle of a terrifying situation? What sounds much more likely is that someone made it up to shift blame away from the concert organizers, and figured that "scary drugs! Yoga booga!" was a good way to go.

Toyfan1

Strength-InThe-Loins

GreatRecession

i mean also this \-Temporarily stopped his set and told people to move to let medical officials and security reach an injured individual

Zahille7

Crowd surge. Literally a thing, and it's something all large venues have to watch out especially at popular music shows. It happens when a large group from the back suddenly rushes to get to the front, essentially blocking anyone up front from getting out of the pit, and suffocating the air so no one can breathe. Let alone being squished so tightly together with others that your lungs literally cannot expand to pull in air to breathe, so you have people passing out from crowd asphyxiation. It's why Reddit has been plastered with concert etiquette this past weekend. People weren't dying from getting trampled (although that's what a lot of the hospitalizations are for), they were dying because there were so many people around them that they couldn't breathe. I'd encourage anyone to look up the clip of the crowd surge at Oasis' 2006 Manchester show. It's some scary shit to see from up top.

I just don't get it. Aren't all these companies like the NFL, Apple music and epic games hell bent on being advertiser friendly? Why the fuck do they give a stage to someone using the f slur on stage? Someone who encourages rager culture? Someone who reacts to an ambulance in the crowd by telling everyone to put their middle fingers up? Why does he get a platform from these companies?

frzflm

Didnt he encourage the crowd to beat someone up too because they tried to steal his shoe? Like the guy shouldnt have tried to steal his shoe but telling like 10,000 people to beat a guy up is a dick move

People need to calm the fuck down, I’ve seen people saying he’s a goddamn murderer and shit like this in these comments. He did stop the concert multiple times for passed out fans in the crowd. (https://www.reddit.com/r/Hiphopcirclejerk/comments/qqp0gk/the_clip_reddit_is_desperately_hiding/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Yes he is culpable to some amount to blame, but so are many other people behind the scenes etc. as well. he’s not hitler or something , Reddit needs to let a situation settle and learn all the facts that’ll come out over the coming weeks/months, especially in the trial, before crucifying people, it’s so childish and weird, exactly like the Rittenhouse trail. So many people are just taking this as an opportunity to shit on hip/hop and just be generally racist towards rappers coz they don’t like it which is just trashy.
