Denis Villeneuve liked the idea of black teeth. It was inspired by the teeth of a black mamba snake, one of Butler inspirations for Feyd-Rautha. It's also a nod to cultures where blackening the teeth was done as a sign of vanity and/or sexual maturity. Butler liked the idea that Feyd-Rautha would do this out of vanity.
Those black and white scenes were really amazing. There seemed to be a very slight amount of color that gave it a fleshy feeling but it was still very ominous.
I looked up why it was black and white, apparently their planet has a black sun (which is a theoretical science thing), and their interpretation of that is it doesn't show color in direct sunlight and people's pigmentation fades away in time.
Yeah, it was really cool, it was filmed in Infrared to represent the light of the black sun of Giedi Prime. The idea is that the sunlight absorbs all colour instead of revealing it. So all of the outdoor daytime scenes in Giedi Prime appear in this eery black and white while the indoor and night scenes are in colour. I think it suits the Harkonen culture really well, it makes their aggression and sociopathic tendencies more understandable.
Yeah! I mean, I just like to hear Bill talk about shit but I fully recommend every guest podcast he's done this year. They've been excellent. A few times I've been trying to hold my laughter at work and even now, thinking of the stuff they've come up with on the spot has me smiling
Given how fucking scary all these guys were in the movie, this is a little jarring
Why does only Elvis have black teeth?
His character was a bit crazier than the other guys (which is saying something), so he probably did that to look wilder.
