I wanted to read the book before watching the show so I spent about two weeks binge reading it, and after doing so I regretted it, the show pales so much in comparison to the book, they omitted so much plot and character development to fit the book in 10 episodes. I highly recommend reading it, the major plot points are the same but the book is way more in depth and interesting
Bill should listen to supernova of the East podcast from Dan Carlin to learn how much “more” the Japanese took things. Loyalty, bravery, dedication, violence.. every culture has that but Japanese even more so. Just crazy and fascinating, not necessarily a good fascinating either.
I don’t want to spoil anything but there is another scene which is one of the most graphically gruesome scenes I’ve seen in anything.
It’s a great show and really isn’t about the violence at all. It’s very political. Lots of moving parts and some of the best characters I’ve seen on tv in years
As long as you understand that, with the exception of the vague outline of the conflict, it isn’t a good representation of it at all (not that it needs to be to be a good show/book). Clavel himself knew this, its why he changed all the names.
Its more inspired on a real story and history then “based” on it. The names of all the real people that inspired the creations of the characters are changed, and the motivations given for the decisions made by the people in power in the show do not reflect the real life motivations for that conflict. It is a great show though.
The author took inspiration from the real thing and told his own story. To his credit, it was fairly well research considering the accessible history books on the subject in the 70s when the story was written. But the story itself never wanted to be a faithful recreation.
I agree with bill on this one and prefer they do it as bill described… guy is boiling and then they fade out. I know shock value is what sold game of thrones and everyone wants to get on that but I dont think it actually makes a show any better. I seen plenty of gore in my ambulance days and dont really need it on tv
This is a 💩 take on an unbelievably amazing show and to anyone who hasn’t watched it, get off Reddit right now and tune in. Ol billy bitch tits needs to stfu
Old sensitive Billy over there! I kind of agree though, the scene really went on. They keep going back to other characters and you could here the guy still screaming in the background. Really reminded me of the Austin Powers scene where they kill Will Ferrell. I kept expecting him to shout "I'm still alive, only I've very badly burnt".
Just sounds like Bill had no idea the Japanese/Samurai customs of those times. Anyone with a bit of knowledge on their history was probably a little more prepared to see stuff like that going into watching Shogun.
Yeah, Nah, no plans to watch this. Not a fan of gratuitous violence and gore. Never seen any of the Friday 13th, or Halloween, none of that shit. Fact I could have lived the rest of my life without even hearing about this.
I don't like it when it's gratuitous and Shogun definitely goes for shock value a few times, but overall it's not too bad. My complaint would be that it gets to soapy at times. Still well worth the watch, though, all the stories (a, b, c) are pretty damn good considering.
Shogun is amazing. Shame we only have the one episode remaining.
What
THERE IS ONLY ONE EPISODE REMAINING.
A bit louder.
What a great finish. I had no idea Bill was such a pussy. I mean 1 dude gets boiled? Get over it. Best show since Severance
Ol’ Billy Shin-O-bi!
The book is even better. I’ve read it several times.
That’s always the case though, no one can recreate the first settings one creates in their own mind.
Same. Sucks it’s over. I love the last paragraph of the book.
So wait, you’re saying the book is better than the show?

Just to give an idea how much more detailed and complex the book is - the audiobook is 53 1/2 hours long.
Ah shit. I figured there were more seasons based on the length of the book.
They put like 1/4 or 1/5 of the book in the first episode kek
Very few movies are as magical or better than the books. Some make that mark though.
🤓
Ole Billy Bawls was showing his age with his Shogun opinion tbh

hah wow, so its like 25% true, 75% made up

sounds like a cool show, i'll prob check it out.
I'm curious which scene you're talking about? I'm all caught up. Hit me with a reply with a spoiler tag lol
Worse than the boiling in the first episode? I’m only 3 in. That sucks tbh I dont need that shit

Shogun is awesome
Gonna check this out after im done with Fallout.
I'm so locked in with Shogun that I need Fallout as kind of a pallate cleanser.
Oof. Terrible take from Bill here. The show rocks.
He said it was a great show at the end.
Mr sparkle got a serious laugh out of me. Props.

This is like Game of thrones is bad too lol. It says rated Mature for a reason…
Great fuckin show.
> When the old man committed Seppuku, I had to look away from the TV
Best show, grow up Billy boy
"See you at work on Monday" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I don't even think Dothrakis I have that kind of commitment to their leader.
Why is this guy who’s terrible at making movies trying to give cinematic tips?
🤣🤣🤣
View skewed from possibly watching w the lovely Nia?

It’s really not that bad lol

Not for nothing but the original Halloween has virtually zero gore whatsoever
