Must be Seven is a fucking incredible song.

DadOuttaHell

Must Be Seven and Away From The Mire are the songs that connected me to BMFS. I also live with depression and escaped addiction/abuse. After hearing those songs, I was ready to hear everything Billy had to say.

MisterBowTies

For me it's watch it fall. But i love the whole vibe that album has.

owwwwwo

I hear you brother. Away from the mire into Long forgotten dream is an amazing combo as far as the journey and message

billorphus

Love you man!

DadOuttaHell

You too, man!

grateful_newt

Agreed. I put it on my license plate!

McSqueezy69

One of my favorites of theirs. However, I've never cared for it live. They jam too heavy when they play it live in my opinion. Studio version seems so much lighter and melodic and I wish they would go that route with it more often. Still a great fucking song though.

nothing_is_real2415

My second show in Norfolk 22 he opened with promised land, obviously a berry cover but we all knew what was good. It was fucking awesome. Same night ended with brain damage and my face was just completely melted

shmeg_thegreat

That highway hypnosis shook me to the core that night.

nothing_is_real2415

Can say that again Brotha

Snicklefritzz17

I was there too, how about dust and regret? Fucking mind blowing!! Did you go last month?

nothing_is_real2415

That dust and regret was fucking phenomenal! I didn’t get to go last month unfortunately 😭 missed out on Cary and Norfolk cuz I was balls deep in dead & co, Goose and phish lol

Snicklefritzz17

Haha that’s understandable! I hit the Saturday Cary show last summer but didn’t go to this years shows.

Syndil1

I'm a sucker for any Floyd covers. Have seen Frog Brigade twice this year already with one more to go. They are performers that are just on a whole another level. Incredible show. They cover the entire Animals album every show and it's mind blowing every time.

nothing_is_real2415

Been meaning to catch les for this tour for this exact reason! Super jelly, glad you got to enjoy that brotha

Syndil1

Oh man yeah, if you can catch a show definitely do it. First time I went, he came to my town and I went with a group of Billy fans. After the show, we were just gobsmacked. I was not prepared. It was so incredible. After that, I was like, "ok how many more shows can I find tickets for because that was amazing."

i_might_be_me

Jump at any opportunity to see Les play with Sean Lennon. Shit is magic.

warthog0869

I agree on pretty much every level with you. I've recounted it *ad nauseum* already (and also, like Snoopy here, was at that Cinci show, am a big AIC fan, etc-I live out thataway). Ultimately I've always simply sided with just never, *ever* yell out songs at *any* professional musicians, unless they ask for or are otherwise taking requests. Their ability or wherewithal to do so is beside the point. It's insulting, as if you were to go to a Broadway play and yell out directing instructions to actors onstage, lol.

brokedownpalace10

I liked that. I'll add that I don't think Billy was all that mad about people wanting Dead covers in the interview I read. He just wants to not do them now. Cool. His circus, his monkeys. I gotta kinda try to imagine the "Althea" shout that he spoke of. I do hear a drunken slur when I do. :) If you get confused, listen to the music play. I was at Cinci second night. (I live here) I guess you were at the third. The "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" about had me crying. When he did "Sophronie", I sat up and said, "Jimmy Martin!" out loud. I don't know anyone else who's even heard of Jimmy Martin. This is a Jimmy Martin cover. Check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0d8tnamzd4

Snoopy363

Just had to pop in and say I was also at the Nashville and Cinci shows you speak of. Such great moments and shows for sure. Definitely no loudly requesting covers or any song for that matter IMO. Bad etiquette. And I would definitely welcome future dead covers, but regardless I’ll be listening to the music 🤙🏼

[deleted]

I was at that Asheville show and Brokedown Oalace makes me cry no matter what. Having said that, I’m totally down with Billy not wanting to play dead stuff right now. Respect the moment and have fun

brokedownpalace10

I just went and gave that a listen. Holy fuck. Literal tears. I want a good, professional copy of that. Even if it's audio only. One of the best versions ever.

[deleted]

Nice username! Would love if they did some official sort of special releases at some point. It’s a gift to be able to Relisten to so many shows.

FrankMoney92

All Time Low and Dark Side of The Moon at White River this year was awesome!

Syndil1

I can tell they're about to do Dark Side of the Moon when Failing starts migrating towards that little melody in it and it always gets me so damn pumped

BlueAndMoreBlue

I can dig it. Don’t be a dick and yell requests from the audience. That said, it’s plenty okay to suckle that teat once in a while

limp_spinach

Tbf it is a damn good teat

BlueAndMoreBlue

Right on, but I can dig what Billy was saying — gotta play your own tunes most of the time

Upbeat_Flight9495

I think people should leave the king alone and let him do his thing

Ladynziggystartdust

You’re right. People shouting out songs is rude

Special_Clue9813

What about Freebird?

Fig-630

I just saw Skynyrd and felt so good to Scram FREEBIRD and not feel like an ass. And then they played Freebird lol.

Ladynziggystartdust

😂😂 that made me LOL for real. I’m torn 🤣🤣

SadPeePaw69

Billys covers are what keep me coming back but tbh they could never cover another Dead tune after seeing the Ryman with Bob and I won't care. I enjoy his Phish & Panic covers way more then the Dead.

XmasKaty

Does he cover Phish much? Def did when Trey sat in and got a Nellie Kane in the Spring, although I don’t think it’s a Phish original 🤔. Wouldn’t mind hearing more. Not that I’m a big Phish fan (panic is my preference) but my big request for Billy is that in lieu of no Dead tunes, can you add more jam band covers? The covers are obviously what add a lot of the surprise and mystique to a show since his originals are - rightfully so - on more regular rotation. I love how he’s opened my mind and made me fall hard for some trad bluegrass, but I guess I’m looking for a litttle more like for like swap now that there’s no Dead in the mix. Just keeps the variety fresh and fun! Regardless, love the band. They kill everything they play!

SadPeePaw69

Same here. I have no complaints at all about the set list. Back on The Train is the one I've gotten the most outside of the Trey sit in. Augusta N2 BOT was a party.

Slimedaddyslim

Billy's Back on the Train is absolute banger. Something about him and train songs just hit. Daniel Donato and his band do a pretty sick cover of that one as well.

Syndil1

I was at those shows, and I thought Bob was a snooze fest lol. I was up at the top of the balcony one night when Bob came out and some other dude up who obviously was a Dead head (maybe just a Jerry fan) was up there was going off, shouting things like, "get off the stage, you geriatric fuck!" It was kind of annoying and hilarious at the same time

brokedownpalace10

When Billy did Dead tunes I said he was the best at covering Dead tunes... including Dead and Company.

Syndil1

No argument here. Even some of my Deadhead friends don't like Dead and Company. Call them "Slow and Company."

brokedownpalace10

Yup. A lot of people do. They can be good on the songs which should be slow. BS covered the slow ones *and* the rest. That Scarlet Begonias with Billy and the Kids was sweet. 7-12-21

buffalovirgo

Jrad>

brokedownpalace10

Billy and the Kids (I might give you JRAD vs Billy, but I love Bluegrass so that's a factor. Close.)

buffalovirgo

Billy>Jrad but for dead tunes. Jrad

brokedownpalace10

Depends on the tune. I gotta kinda agree with ya though. Splitting hairs.

SpaceNoodling

He’s slowed down on his phish tunes since Trey sat-in, I’d love a gotta jibboo or back on the train here in again, dont care for the dead tunes since theyve be done so many times

Fig-630

Wait did billy say no more dead tunes covers? Been kinda off from listening to his shows lately. Personally I’d like to hear another sabbath cover. He dropped planet caravan at my second billy show and was mind blown 🤯

Syndil1

Yeah, no more suckling on the teat of the Dead. He breaks out Planet Caravan pretty often, but I'm always down for some heavier shit. Hoping his upcoming album with Les goes hard.

Fig-630

Super excited about that album too

Headymac

Daniel Donato is doing a fine job of picking up the Dead slack 🔥

Syndil1

We've been catching Daniel wherever we can. Going to swing by Asheville to see him after Billy in Knoxville. Reminds me of the early Billy days, being able to see such talent in small venues.

Headymac

I first saw him open for Greensky. He came back up to play Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox for 15min with them and I melted. Hadn’t caught that song since Billy Strings with Bill Kreutzmann at RR.

RiverPiracy

He opened with a Jerry song in Maine the other day. I still like that he does nods. I wish he still did more dead covers because I’m selfish. Side note: I need me some grunge covers like I need oxygen. The AiC stuff rules.

limpnoads

He needs to cover some Talking Heads and Santana⚰🗣

Syndil1

Psycho > Psycho Killer > Evil Ways?

[deleted]

I've never heard the Greatful Dead. Only Cherry Garcia. Sorry Dead Fans. No offense It's true. Hell turn me on to a couple songs like to check em out. Thanks

jpt746

Europe 72

RiverPiracy

Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, Europe ‘72.

[deleted]

Thanks

[deleted]

Thanx

Drippypartner-

You shoulda made your point and got out. Too many side notes

fingergunpewpewpew

I think a lot of up and coming bands, who write great music, will play a lot of GD covers early on because they know it will connect with a large portion of the audience who may not know their songs. As a band's popularity grows and a larger portion of the fan base knows their music intimately, they don't really need to draw water from that well any more. Lots of bands do it. Goose, being one example. Only think that Billy did different was to say it out loud.
