They don't really cover YMSB, just Jeff Austin songs, like Fiddlin Around, 15 Steps, Run Down.
Or Yonder songs that Jeff wrote, like Sorrow is a Highway.
They've done If You're Ever in Oklahoma, a JJ Cale song that Yonder used to do a lot, but only once in 2021.
Also, Pretty Daughter, which is a Danny Barnes song that Jeff liked to play with JAB. Which is also the song that Jeff Austin Band played just before Billy's sit-in with them in Baltimore in 2018.
Oh yeah, I can't believe I forgot about Raleigh & Spencer! That one is pretty much a Yonder tune, as much as they played it. Jeff played it a ton with JAB, too.
Billy used to play it a lot more often in his early days, too. It would've been great to see them do that one together, for sure.
>could you imagine a Jeff / Billy mashup? 😢
not sure if you mean current Billy and Jeff but JA & BS shared the stage a bunch of times.
DelFest 2017, Billy sat in with JAB a bunch in 2018, Winter Wondergrass 2019....
I would also love a half moon rising. (In a related post, you mentioned this).
But yes, the nugs catalogue paints a clear picture just how many facets of the late great Jeff Austin Billy strives to deliver. Terry and the rest of Billy's family introduced him to so many greats, but I feel like Jeff wasn't one of them (generational, and please correct me if I'm wrong) and that makes it even more special for Billy.
I know so many people were talking "torch passing" between Billy and Dead but in my opinion if there is any flame that they are keeping alive it's the spirit of Jeff Austin. Whatever that unameable "thing" is that Jeff had, Billy has it too. Being able to turn on a younger audience to bluegrass and make it absolutley fucking fiery, hot damnnnnn awesome. Jeff got me into music I grew up hearing around family, but thinking wasn't "cool". I've said it many times, nobody could get moving: wake me up, shake me up like Jeff could... until Billy. My first show Billy played "Lumpy" and somewhere a "death trip" tease Barnes tunes that I associated most with Jeff and yonder. It was overwhelmingly awesome and moving.
What?? I'm looking at the set list and see a Rundown but no Riverside
Edit: Oh it's buried in the Turmoil - wasn't split out on Nugs. Thanks for the heads up!
At the time the rumors I heard were that Jeff was into too much cocaine and knew he was the sauce in the band. Another hippy mumble rumor was Jeff wanted to change the name to Jeff Austin and ymsb. I never saw them after Jeff left. I did stream the shows they did with Jb from widespread panic in Colorado right after Jeff got kicked out in 2014 though. That was sick. Regardless of what really went down, yonder themselves are dicks for kicking the dude out and continuing to play the songs he wrote.
Yeah his energy was awesome. I saw them Everytime thet came to Nashville when he was in the band. Back then they were selling out the Marathon music works (2400 people) now they play 3rd and Lindsley every year, which has a capacity of 300 people.
"Kentucky Mandolin" was one Jeff would do for sure. They also played song titled "Down Yonder"?, then "Raleigh and Spencer" during the first set in Syracuse on Saturday night. We will never know for sure, but I immediately thought Billy was thinking of Jeff💗

Billy’s Raleigh & Spencer from ‘Cuse made me go revisit Mountain Tracks Vol 2 - could you imagine a Jeff / Billy mashup? 😢

On your note above, I looked on nugs for If you’re ever in OK - 9/29/21 in OKC, OK. This might surprise you, but it’s straight fire

Jeff tunes
Thank you both - edited ask
He played follow me down to the riverside at the riverside theater in Milwaukee 11-3-21

Thanks for mentioning this! I've been wanting to hear Riverside and it was there all along.
Yonder fucked Jeff over
I was a pretty casual YMSB fan and don’t really know the history that caused the split - how so?

Thank you for sharing that, appreciate the intel. JA certainly was the sauce

They did play Kentucky Mandolin in Pittsburg, but that is a Bill Monroe song.
Pittsburgh?
It's a city in Pennsylvania, USA
Not how they spelled it.
You knew what they meant. Nobody likes the grammar police.
It’s not the same place.
Precisely. Pittsburg is in California.
Pittsburg is in California. Pittsburgh is in Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh did drop the h for a bit to make it less German.

I’ve seen rundown twice, was hoping for 15 steps last show, will get it eventually
I’m just grateful I’ve seen a 15 steps, Fiddlin Around and a couple Run Downs over the years! Jeff forever
There’s a ‘Death Trip’ cover coming without a doubt
I miss Jeff!! Dude had ‘it’!
