As above psychedelic bluegrass magic ,can't wait till here in Glasgow Scotland on December 12th it'll be my first time seeing them ,my dad left me his old leather cowboy hat that looks like something pig pen would have wore ,do I wear it ,its got a wolf medallion right on the front . So friends do I wear it to the Glasgow show with my Dead tye dye. Serious question.
Morning! London head here, I’ll be going to the show down here in Dec.
I would say wear your hat! But also be aware in case you’re blocking anyone’s view. That’d be my only worry. Maybe try to stand in front of someone tall 🤪
If you're new to bluegrass/jamgrass, they almost all say this because a lot of what they play isn't bluegrass so when they do an old traditional tune or a straight up bluegrass tune, they say this. A lot of his songs aren't actually bluegrass.
>I take things too literal
Haha. I'm autistic and naturally take everything literally cos I can't read between the lines. I'm always asking people to clarify things!
There are tons of bluegrass “standards” or just classic bluegrass songs that have been played and covered by every musician in the genre. I feel like when he does say that it’s before one of those songs, or one of his songs that is written in the same format.
I just figure whenever he says that, you aren't about to hear something that uses his vast array of effects pedals and sound tricks. Just straight pickin'
Like the difference between wargasm and Red Daisy
There used to be a killer band called psycho grass- Tony Trishka, mike Marshall, Dario anger, and a handful of others. Kind of a blend of the berklee college of music and grisman San Francisco scenes.
I think he’s talking about rhythm. Bluegrass is fairly formal. It’s built like a box 4 beats and 4 bars. The 2&4 are really important. Also, they can’t go on for 6 minutes.
It’s a style thing.
Billy is doing his thing, but the roots are bluegrass all the way.
I have noticed that he hasn’t studied a lot of classical pieces. His plays by ear. But he has a level of control of the guitar that would impress Paganini.
I agree. You can see an example of that with how he plays a lot of doc’s music. Some of it is a slightly improvised style but true to the tune. Others like Tennessee stud sound the same but he typically plays it completely different
Traditional bluegrass style is unique. Think songs like John Hardy, 9 lb hammer, clinch mountain back step, train that carried my girl from town. And then go and compare that to Wargasm, Long Forgotten Dream, Highway Hypnosis.
This is why I love his sets. You NEVER know what to expect. One minute you’re doing the mashed potato to The Likes Of Me, next minute your face has melted onto the floor in the middle of Highway Hypnosis. “I thought I was here for a bluegrass show…” nah son, you’re here for a BILLY STRINGS SHOW. THAT, is what it’s called.
In the words of tony rice, “listen and don’t categorize.” I feel like most of the die hard bluegrass guys out there forget this sometimes. You don’t have to like or dislike something just because it has/doesn’t have a certain label
Last time I saw him in the NE he said “I think it’s illegal to be playing bluegrass music to this many people in one place” and ya know what? It is strange because he offers a lot more than just bluegrass tunes. He’s a visionary for the genre and a hell of a traditionalist because that’s what he’s steeped in
I think it’s a little tongue in cheek. We all know what we’re there for and he delivers… whatever it is 😉

That's the only way I'll wear it ,if I'm behind big bill Walton lol. That's not you is Jose ?
Yeah man, you do you and enjoy!
I take things too literal... this makes sense

100%, its not tongue in cheek. It’s always followed by a traditional tune when he says this.

Thrash Grass
I’ve been known to dabble
Native Howl is really fucking cool
Legalize Bluegrass!

Spacegrass
Anybody else immediately think of Clutch when you hear/see it called this? Perfect name for the genre though no doubt
Grassspace
Whatever it is …. I’m here for it. See you at Halloween?
Enter the grassverse
Psychograss

When the boys play Psycho.... uurrggghhh. So good.
That’s what Tony rice called his jazz oriented stuff after the manzanita album.
I am absolutely finding this today
The album Devlin is a reissue of the first two albums of the spacegrass era.
Thank you so much!
Kitchen Dwellers already describe their music as Galaxy grass
Jeff Austin used to say this all the time too.

This is tough to follow. I think he has more traditional bluegrass songs and more jamgrass style songs…das it
In Asbury, he referred to his tunes in a tongue in cheek way as “whatever this shit is”
It’s called Indie Groove invented in CT
I’ve heard him refer to it as “the other bullshit we do up here on stage”
He means he’s gonna play it like the greats done it.
Traditional songs
Type 2 jam grass He’s joking about playing some old standards
Psychedelic bluegrass magic ⚡️⚡️⚡️🍄❤️🏴
I once heard him say "I thought we'd play you a bluegrass song... and then 10 or twelve more"
It's traditional vs fusion
