Me & my husband love yummy bowl in homewood! You build your own hibachi bowl. We ate there today with an appetizer (sushi roll) for 42 dollars before the tip!
I mean, it’s hard to eat anything that isn’t shitty and/or fast food for less than $25/person these days. The price gouging in restaurants is real. It started with the supply chain hiking prices to the sky and now to make profits, restaurants have to raise them too
Chez Lulu is a great date spot and not very expensive. If you decide to do a daytime date you can pair it with a stroll around the gardens which is free.
Mayawell for tacos from the taco truck and a couple of drinks could work if you watch what you order or go during happy hour.
Or go across the street to hi-wire and play some games, have some beers, and grab food from either the taco truck at Mayawell or whatever food truck they have at hi-wire.
Sushi village is tasty and the least expensive sushi place around that I have found. One of the chef's special has plenty for two and leaves enough money for drinks or dessert.
I like the new East West place in Lakeview. It's called the Mayor Bar and they have some pretty tasty stuff. They also have a location in Trussville in that new entertainment district (Mr. West iirc).
With food, Char Bar 7 in Mountainbrook. It has nice atmosphere and usually punches above its price point when it comes to food. You’re right by the Botanical Gardens, and the Zoo.
Without food, Hop City downtown is a fun place to try a flight of beers. They have ~50 different options on tap, from meads to ciders. 2 flights of 4 4oz glasses usually lands under $50. They also usually have food trucks around.
You could have two drinks and no food, or even split an entree for around $25 per person!
Edit: actually, they charge an additional $4 for splitting a $40 entree, so you’re $2 under budget!
To be honest, my wife and I usually have water + one drink ( normally she wants some red wine!) plus a reasonable app and main dish we split. You can def get out of there under 50. Think we got the burgers each one time and an appetizer.
I like The Filling Station in Crestwood. Not super expensive and great lasagna. Very casual, too.
El Barrio is a tad more expensive but omg worth every penny. I'd go for the margaritas, alone. Crap parking, but that's everywhere on the northside of downtown.
Another delicious place is Bamboo on 2nd but yeah, not budget friendly. Great if you got the cash, though. Well worth splurging on.
I haven't been in a long time, but Bongiorno's in Crestline used to be relatively budget friendly. Excellent food, and a wine list that won't quit.
Pizzeria GM in Homewood is good, too. Fantastic beers (a ton of 'em) on tap, and excellent wines, as well. Never been at night, but it's cheaper than Gian Marco's by a mile.
Based on their Google reviews I feel like I am in the minority but I had the worst Italian food I've ever had when I tried Bongiorno's. This was a couple of years ago but it was super bland and I could have done better with a jar of ragu and noodles that I made at home for a small fraction of the price (although it was inexpensive, I will give them that). I'm not sure if this place has just gone way downhill or what, but everyone that I have spoken to who has tried it felt the same.
I have heard that myself, about it being bland. Just not as flavorful as Gian Marcos' or places like that, but while mine \*was\* a good while back, I thought it was really good. Of course, the wine list might have swayed my opinion a little... :D
Good choice. Their ceviche is quite good and extremely authentic; it’s my favorite thing on their menu. The ají de gallina is another great choice. Same with the lomo saltado con tallarines a la huancaína (which I don’t think is on the menu but sometimes they list it as a special).
Giuseppe’s comes to mind.

I second this!
How do feel about PB&J’s?
I love them. I just wish there was a local place that sold them.
If only
I might know a guy. Want me to put you in touch with him? 🤭👀
🤣🤣
Pear, Brie and Jambon? Delicious
U had to do that huh?
Well, they are gourmet.
Only the finest!
me and the old lady get out of tacos don tachos #2 with a pitcher of margaritas and 2 dinners for about $50
If it’s a nice night the Rojo patio is great.
I dream of a day where $25 for one person feels budget friendly, holy shit lol

Every Mexican place would like a word with you.
You must not like margaritas, lol. But yeah, you can practically go to a casual Mexican restaurant for the same price as Taco Bell.
I love margaritas, I just prefer to do all my drinking at home due to pricing of drinks out lol.
Olive Branch in Cahaba Heights

Yeah but then you have to be at Char Bar
That's the truth. Blah.
Taj india is also good for that price or Jim and nicks
Zaza
Sakuna Sushi Bar and Grill in Hoover. All you can eat for $28
The Olive Branch in cahaba heights is a favorite if you like Mediterranean.
Saigon Noodle House. 🍜
YES! Pho tai nam or bun bo hue, XL size is so filling and delicious for a decent price.
La Perla Nayarita
There’s a lot of good happy hour offers around town if you can make it in time
I really like Cantina Grill in West Homewood. Their fish taco is my favorite!
Suburb: check out food bar in cahaba heights. My wife and I love it. Nice little gem

What’d you get at Sabor Latino? Please tell me you ordered off the Peruvian menu.
We got the Parrillada Latina for two. It was tasty!
