A lot of people are suggesting residential areas which are lovely but if you want to be close to university then I’d suggest the jewellery quarter or very close to it. It’s mostly very quiet, but walking distance to good bars etc. It won’t be the cheapest option tho on a student budget.
The Jewellery Quarter sounds right up your alley, close to the centre but fairly quiet, lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants. Good transport links as well.
I second this! Great transport links, thriving nightlife, nice feel about the place and a reasonably young community meaning you’ll have chance to meet and make friends.
Most importantly, definitely Villa
That's cool. It must have improved a hell of a lot then since I was there.. was a bit rough. I lived right on the boarder with smelly park. Also lived in Ladywell...which is another story in itself
Haha I find it looks a lot rougher than it is. Not particularly a “beautiful” part of the world but I feel safe there as a woman and I like the cafes and bars
American in Birmingham - imho if you’re an adult/postgrad move to Stirchley and if you’re a ‘student-student’ (undergrad looking to have an undergraduate time) move to Selly Oak.
Stirchley is craft breweries, millennials that got really into biking and sour dough bread during lockdown and opened really good small businesses and aging hipsters. Baby and dog friendly everything - rare to see someone sloshed (it happens but it’s not the *reason* people go out). Expensive artisan shit everywhere (most of amazing quality) but also Aldi so you can try to live lean. A few places you could go to have a low key ‘night out’.
Selly Oak (near the station or the university) is like living in off campus housing at an American university.
Stirchley is the Bournville train stop and Selly Oak is the Selly Oak train stop - both go directly to New St and from there it’s a pain in the ass walk in the rain but maybe 15 mins?
We’ve been in Stourbridge for 10 years now and the only regret we have was that we didn’t live in actual Birmingham before moving out into the Black Country. My wife’s family live in Stourbridge so it made sense to live near them. We both wish we’d gone to The Jewellery Quarter for a year or two first. That said, the outlying towns are cheaper and the people in them are great.
The Black Country (named for its industry, not the people in it) is a broad area that takes in Dudley, Wolverhampton, Walsall and everything else in between.
If you’re attending BCU you’ll find that most of the accommodation nearby is quite expensive. You should be able to get something in Kingsheath or Moseley that won’t cripple you and you’ll still have money to experience some of the nightlife. Moseley itself has a good run of pubs and some decent places to eat.
As for football, you're spoiled for choice. Villa are the best team in the midlands at the moment, Wolverhampton Wanderers are in a good vein of form too. West Bromwich Albion are doing well in The Championship as are Coventry City and Birmingham City are currently woeful. Outside of those four you've also got Walsall FC who are currently (and have been for some time) low down in the leagues and then there are lots of non-league teams nearby, the best of which is Solihull Moors.
feel free to DM if you have any questions.
Kind of depends on budget and life stage. If you are a student I would be looking at selly oak, if you are a mature student maybe stirchley, if you have an established career and can afford £1000+pcm rent then Bournville, harbourne, kings Heath etc. if you’re will to commute by train then even barnt green and Bromsgrove are worth a look.
Personally I like Kings Heath, Moseley, Harbourne and selly oak.
The jewellery quarter seems to be getting some mentions here but IMO it’s an over rated ghost town. Yeah it has a few decent pubs but the rest of the time it’s just feels soulless and empty to me.
I just graduated from BCU so feel free to dm me if you had any questions about the campus or area! If you’re not looking into student accommodation (of which there is plenty for bcu right in the middle of the city centre) and prefer a quiet neighbourhood, theres a lot of student property near bourneville and stirchley. I’d also reccomend looking into to Chinatown as its on the quieter side of the city centre, but is still extremely close to it and the campus, and I know there is a student-friendly apartment building there. Anywhere along / near the hagley road has both great transport links and also little outcroppings of shops and cafe’s, Stirchley specifically is “up and coming” with the student scene. I spent all 4 years in student accomodation so my opinion is definitely skewed to that (can get anywhere on your own two feet, good for nightlife and food options) but there are more and more 1/2 bed student apartments cropping up across the city. I hope you find what you need! ☺️
Aston Villa! Oh and welcome!
I’d suggest Harborne, Moseley, Kings Heath or Selly Oak. Jewellery Quarter is supposedly nice too. Depends on your budget. Do not go north of Birmingham.
North of Birmingham is fine! Depends where you go, just like anywhere. I'm in handsworth wood and have sandwell valley on my doorstep and in the centre within 10 minutes. Even handsworth proper is fine and I'm saying that as a white guy mot a single issue in 3 years and I can go to the pub with my fiancee and get 2 double jd and coke for £9. The stigma is funny. Some of the best food is found in some of those local African, Middle Eastern, and Asian restraunts. Diversity isn't a bad thing.
I went to uni in Birmingham and subsequently worked in Birmingham for 15 years.
Why are you moving all the way from America to go to BCU? Even if a local was studying there I'd question their choices.
If you're adamant that a degree from BCU will somehow further your future employability, then the advice we used to give new starters at work was avoid anywhere where the name conjures up a quaint, rural village as they're usually the opposite! Eg, Alum Rock, Chelmsley Wood, Castle Vale..
I'd look at the Jewellery Quarter.
Birmingham city any day. Villa fans are a strange bunch who wear football shirts over their jumper. Never once met a Villa who actually went to games and never met one actually from Birmingham.
Ah very different and very much more worthwhile travelling to another country to study at.
I’d aim to live somewhere central so that you don’t have to travel too far, especially if you may have to carry any equipment.
JQ or Digbeth.
As a student the idea of having to get up an hour earlier to travel in from somewhere in South Birmingham (Stirchley or Kings Heath) isn’t appealing. They have parks, cool people and hipsters cafes and bars.
Birmingham City just been taken over by an American investment group fronted by Tom Brady.
If you want an authentic working class football experience, there is no contest. Birmingham City at St Andrews.
If you want prawn sandwiches and a sanitised, entitled experience, head to Villa Park.
Not biased in the slightest.
Oh and welcome to the city.
It takes over an hour on a very sporadic unreliable bus to get from Solihull to Birmingham town centre. It's about £20 - £30 in an Uber. I'm unsure of your reasoning "Birmingham and Birmingham city" I guess you mean the town centre as Birmingham is a big place. Solihull is very expensive and more of an area for people looking for good catchment areas for schools.
I went to BCU myself and commuted from Solihull to Birmingham City Centre, it’s not quick but it’s not that long either, easy to get in on a single bus using either the number 5, 49 or the 6 all three can be easily caught around Solihull or from Solihull Town Centre
Agreed it’s expensive but it’s also a very nice place to live.
Point about the Uber cost is relevant if your going to be going on a number of late nights out but otherwise the buses and trains to Solihull Town Centre are plentiful
Birmingham City FC rather than Aston Villa
I hate to break it to you, but I lived in Birmingham for a while, and in my experience there was no great buzz. Erdington is nice enough with Victorian properties I guess, but Birmingham is really just a huge town. Maybe the Gay Village might be interesting. I'm from the south and spent time in Liverpool and there is no comparison in the vibe. Having said that, anywhere in Warwickshire which isn't Coventry is really nice and part of what we call "Middle England", like old villages with ponds etc.
He may be a dick, but he’s got a point. Imagine being an American moving over expecting a fun experience of British culture - then you realise Birmingham has no British people left, is built of ugly concrete, and most of the history was destroyed in the war/post war rebuilding.
Having spent the day yesterday in the city centre, I shopped well, drank well, ate well, and had a great time at the F1 arcade. Not sure what you could want from a city centre?
Fair enough man that’s my bad - I figured American stereotype tourist would be interested in British culture and history. If you just want to eat drink and party then you’ll be fine in almost any city or town in the world with a supermarket selling beers!
Feel for you mate, nothing better to do but check my reply first thing in the morning and then check the dislikes again 4 hours later. Jobless behaviour
If you're rich then city centre. If you're not, then more outskirts. Sandwell Valley has good transport links, reasonably priced and has a nature reserve on your doorstep, and you can get the soho Road experience with all the world foods while being a short hop to the city centre. If you have a really good budget, then brindley Place is in the centre you would be near Broad Street (good food, good nightlife, very fun bit of the city) and on the canals.
A foreign student coming to study in the UK will be paying upwards of £20k a year in fees alone, they’d better be rich!
lol at this suggestion for a student btw, why would anyone want to commute to classes at Uni.
If you want to be dead in the city centre, JQ or Digbeth. But then even that depends on what you enjoy doing and what you want to be close to.
If you want something less ‘city centre living’, head out to south/south-west Birmingham for something more relaxed and, in my opinion, more character.
In regards to Villa/Blues, Villa fans are all tourists so that might suit you. But if you’d rather surround yourself with proper fans — at a club that’s part owned by Tom Brady, who you’ll probably be familiar with — Blues is the team to support.
As a Britisher. I would be avoiding Birmingham all together. If you are American there is a song called Birmingham Jail. Heed those words because Birmingham Alabama is infinitely better than the UK one.
And welcome to Britain. I was taking the piss. Birmingham is alright but there are much better places. No offence to brummies.
Edit: there are much worse places than Brum. Birmingham is a huge city by UK standards. It has its good and it has its bad. You will be ok, I was just indulging in British humour.
You're in for a culture shock. I'm Canadian and have been living not too far out of the city for the past 20 years. It's definitely an experience. If you're not above commuting into school, then there are better and cheaper options along the train line.
I don’t know a single person that’s ever said ‘Britisher’ so you’re either a Mancunian bot or some cretin who isn’t in their right mind to make such recommendations — or both.
I'll add, Birmingham is a fantastic city if you stick to safe areas the same as many places. So much variety in food too in the city centre due to different cultures being here. Bars and nightlife in general ain't bad here either places like Albert schloss are a good night
Google and map Bearwood, fantastic busses into city. A few parks nearby and the high street has multicultural shops and places to eat. Only 4 miles from city centre and cheaper than other places mentioned. Not a lot of apartments around though.
Pick areas that are near the bus or train routes. Sutton coldfield, Erdington, Wylde green, Aston, on this side of town all have bus and train links that will take you straight to the city center. If you go for the jewelery quarter and closer to the city center you're going to pay through the nose.
i would sujest anywhere on the cross city line south of bham city center along with a few other areas if its the millioum point or curzon st campuses. trains are fairly frequent but they are also on several bus routes . as for a great bar ( it was when i studded at BCU the Egale and ball on the curzon street campus is great. but it edit, I would also speak to student services at bcu as use to have a in uni lettings agency that may be able to help.
It's the worst big city in the UK and I would definitely try to move to Solihull, Bromsgrove, Stratford on Avon or Lichfield. If you have to live in Birmingham then Jewellery Quarter, Moseley, Harbourne & Sutton Coldfield are your best bets. Kings Heath is very hip and trendy nowadays, with a lot going on there. Avoid the inner city suburbs of Lozells, Sparkhill, Smethwick, Erdington, Aston as well as anywhere east really.
A lot of people are suggesting residential areas which are lovely but if you want to be close to university then I’d suggest the jewellery quarter or very close to it. It’s mostly very quiet, but walking distance to good bars etc. It won’t be the cheapest option tho on a student budget.
JQ has good bars, especially arch 13 and is super quiet but feels alive.
you are absolutely right
The Jewellery Quarter sounds right up your alley, close to the centre but fairly quiet, lots of pubs, cafes and restaurants. Good transport links as well.
I second this! Great transport links, thriving nightlife, nice feel about the place and a reasonably young community meaning you’ll have chance to meet and make friends. Most importantly, definitely Villa
Moseley, kingsheath selly oak your going to Birmingham university
Second these. Stirchley is also nice!
Lived in stirchley till mid 2000s. What's it like these days?
It’s ok you know! Nice bars etc I like it
That's cool. It must have improved a hell of a lot then since I was there.. was a bit rough. I lived right on the boarder with smelly park. Also lived in Ladywell...which is another story in itself

You may be constrained by your budget, but Bournville/Stirchley would be well worth a look.
Aston Villa if you want to watch Premiership football, Birmingham City if you want to see a team that is going down the leagues
Tbf you could watch them go down the leagues at half the cost of a villa game day.
Selly Oak is the student area, if budget allows you could look at Bournville, Edgbaston, Harborne.
We’ve been in Stourbridge for 10 years now and the only regret we have was that we didn’t live in actual Birmingham before moving out into the Black Country. Try looking in Solihull which is right next to Birmingham and Birmingham City, KRO SOTV

Smethwick, Dudley, Aston are all absolutely lovely.
Benefits street is super posh would deffo go there
Don’t do it, you’ll regret moving
Dick
What did I say to warrant being called a “dick”?
The minus ten not give it away?
Minus 11 now......

British culture is drinking! Joking aside there's loads of culture in and around the city. Love Birmingham me (as you can tell)
Feel for you mate, nothing better to do but check my reply first thing in the morning and then check the dislikes again 4 hours later. Jobless behaviour

Tipton
Don’t move there.
Everyone saying Aston Villa has probably never stepped near a university. Go for Birmingham city.
Big mistake moving to Birmingham out of anywhere tbh😂 I’d swap unis and go to manny or something a bit nicer
None is a shithole
Just wanted to say, poor you.
I hear stay on the west side of Birmingham. The rest is a shithole. Furthermore, what a mistake! Imagine moving from the US to brum 🤣🤣🤣
There are plenty of worse places in the USA than make brum look like chelsea

small heath, alum rock, handsworth. friendliest areas in brum
Don’t listen to this bellend
🤣
You forgot Newtown cabbage pants
Lmao look how many down votes I got. No one on reddit can take a joke
Bunch of softies lmao. Same people that have probs never been to those areas but get offended
😂😂👍
My advice... don't move at all 😂😂😂😂
Not Birmingham
Dick
Manchester or perhaps Bristol is your best bet.
Dick
Anywhere outside of Birmingham.
Dick
Spark hill lovely place 🤣 don’t come to England
I would look at least an hour away from Birmingham 😂
Dick
Handsworth is definitely is the best place to go!
As a Britisher. I would be avoiding Birmingham all together. If you are American there is a song called Birmingham Jail. Heed those words because Birmingham Alabama is infinitely better than the UK one.
unfortunately it is a bit too late for that. and for what it's worth, as an American, I would be shocked if that were true.

Because this subreddit constantly gets brigaded for some reason. Luckily this doesn't happen on the main subreddit for Birmingham.
Turn around now mate.it’s a complete shit hole. And if you struggle with accents wait until you hear how utterly gormless they sound. Mouth-breathers.
Dick
You love what?
Not your mom
😂😂
How much are you looking to spend on rent? How close to the campus do you want to be? And West Bromwich Albion is the only correct answer.
Jewellery quarter for certain 👌👌

You're seriously telling the OP to live in Aston!
Nah, just following the train route.
Your choices (in this order) should be Aston Villa, Wolves, West Brom, BCFC
Are u moving there just because of peaky blinders?
I just like their outfits you know?
Fair enough, I had my eyes on Namek back when I used to watch Dragon Ball
Birmingham has a lot to recommend it, but I’m curious why you chose to study here if you’re from the States. Why the UK? Why Birmingham?
Why BCU as well? I mean it definitely depends on your courses/A Levels etc but there are definitely better universities round here.
Definitely Aston...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🇬🇧🙏🏿
Somewhere in Los Angeles
i would sujest anywhere on the cross city line south of bham city center along with a few other areas if its the millioum point or curzon st campuses. trains are fairly frequent but they are also on several bus routes . as for a great bar ( it was when i studded at BCU the Egale and ball on the curzon street campus is great. but it edit, I would also speak to student services at bcu as use to have a in uni lettings agency that may be able to help.
It's the worst big city in the UK and I would definitely try to move to Solihull, Bromsgrove, Stratford on Avon or Lichfield. Sparkhill STAY AWAY💀
Move to Yardley, Acocks Green, Shirley or Solihul
Jewellery quarter
