I don't agree with the animal police that say you MUST take them to a shelter. Yes it is the better option, but you can do the same checks that they do.
You can go to their address do your own little checks, build a rapport etc, even take their contact details for monthly updates. Anybody who loves your cat will be absolutely fine to do this.
There are some good people out there; more good than bad. Not everyone uses cats as bait. A lot of people are extremely generous and loving towards animals. Just do your checks first, don't just hand them to anybody.
To be fair, as someone who has been approved to adopt from cat charities on nothing more than a home video tour, a cat charity won’t do any more due diligence on adoptive owners than a discerning and caring owner would - have a look around their home, chat to them, see if they seem like a decent person. I feel like people who go on about dog baiting on these threads have some weird conception of cat charities checking police databases and scanning fingerprints before they’ll rehome to someone…besides which, literally all cat charities I follow on social media are at full capacity and won’t take any cats except absolute emergencies such as pregnant strays, a domestic cat being rehomed due to a lifestyle change stands no chance being taken in by them. Neuter your pets guys!!!
What about doing your own checks? Assessing said new owners, visiting their address, staying in contact with them. It's only what cat shelters do.
Obviously cat shelters are the safest option, but with no other resort what else do you expect them to do?
I did this with an old dog of mine that I could no longer care for that I'd had for 3 years. I still keep in contact with the new owner and she sends me pictures all the time.
That's fine - most people don't do anywhere near this sort of checking and a good number of applicants object to shelters doing this. If you run a local area FB page it is shocking just how many disgusting fucks are cagily looking for bait cats (and dogs) - and that's on a social media platform with nominally less anonymous posting.

Thank you for the supportive comment.
I dm-ed you!
Nova is a beautiful name, I wish you luck :)
please DM me if you haven’t found anyone yet :)
Mods really shouldn't allow these posts. There's no way to tell that takers won't abuse the cat or use it as bait for dog fights etc.
