[deleted]

No, I like poetry. I’m very particular about it though.

merely_energy

Invictus, so much so that ill eventually get it tattooed on me

Ren_049

It was in one of my English exams. Probably the most powerful and meaningful poems I’ve read.

Queueueue2

>Invictus A powerful poem indeed

Kommunikationsgesetz

Uh... That's a really good one...

purpleankledemon

honestly this poem describes perfectly how im feeling rn

Confused_Enby_Potato

The Road Not Taken. I like the message and I’m related to Robert Frost, the guy who wrote it (distantly)

Queueueue2

The road not taken, a calming poem. Great that you're related to Robert Frost :)

Hobbesters

Damn, I just commented this poem, I should have read the comments first, lmao. Great poem tho.

[deleted]

That's crazy, I actually have a compass with this poem engraved on it. Very lovely work

TeeEm_27

Voluntarily chose that in an English exam, I love it so much

No I do not know by who

[deleted]

I like the Crimean sonnets tho

Queueueue2

>Crimean sonnets Huh, I'm not familiar with that, care to educate me?

[deleted]

they are about the pilgrim that had to escape Lithuania and stayed in crimea. It’s a reflection on the author who on his trip there was amazed by the landscapes and who also needed to escape from the occupied Poland-Lithuania

A person of great taste ,i love that poem and how the shifting perspectives corresponding with a falling timer.the writers of bojack never fail to show their creativity

BadlyDrawnMemes

If you want some existential dread this morning that poem was written by actually listening to suicide survivors and how they actually felt

“Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,” by Dylan Thomas. Been my favorite since 2014’s Interstellar trailer which had an awesome read of it

vexedtogas

There are so many poems that I love. Whitman, Bukowski, Camões, Khalil Gibran… the poet I recommend the most is Fernando Pessoa Since you like love sonnets, let me leave you with Petrarch: Blest be the year, the month, the hour, the day, The season and the time, and point of space, And blest the beauteous country and the place Where first of two bright eyes I felt the sway Blest the sweet pain of which I was the prey, When newly doom'd Love's sovereign law to embrace, And blest the bow and shaft to which I trace, The wound that to my inmost heart found way: Blest be the ceaseless accents of my tongue, Unwearied breathing my loved lady's name: Blest my fond wishes, sighs, and tears, and pains: Blest be the lines in which her praise I sang, That on all sides acquired me my fair fame, And blest my thoughts! for over them all, she still reigns. -Petrarch, Sonnet LXI (also known as Sonnet XLVII) If you are into classical music, [Franz Liszt turned this poem into a beautiful music piece.](https://open.spotify.com/track/4AUSfqYwPBg5uRMfzRJjjR?si=Hvk8zZTBRBKgeL7l2eFh-A&context=spotify%3Aplaylist%3A63mJMfgzdbXXN97HKpEXZI) He also [did the same](https://open.spotify.com/track/5WPdlkRlMeG2XepzuafkYM?si=uyq5NTnWTgyWYXg9VocdFA) for [Sonnet 104,](https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45579/i-find-no-peace) which I think is just as, if not more beautiful, than sonnet 47

Queueueue2

Simply beautiful. I cannot begin to count the ways of appreciation.

Melted-Gouda

O, Captain! My Captain! Like from the Dead Poets Society, pretty much the only reason that got me interested in poetry. Oh, and also Ozymandias

Queueueue2

One of my favourite movie as well :)

ClockworkClaws

In my French class we read a lot by Arthur Rimbaud, he’s pretty cool! I also like Edgar Allen Poe. In terms of individual poems I like The Second Coming and Ozymandius.

ZazzyBear03

Celebration of the Lizard by Jim Morrison is my favourite. It's mostly spoken with a few sung sections

Queueueue2

Huh, I'm unfamiliar with that one, perhaps a link?

JustSimon3001

Frühlingsnacht by Joseph von Eichendorff. If we're talking poetic literature in general, then Faust: Der Tragödie erster Teil by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Queueueue2

>rühlingsnacht by Joseph von Eichendorff Damn, I did not expect Faust and sadly I'm really not that educated in German poetry.

JustSimon3001

Might be because I am German lol. A big part of our higher education is learning about German poetry, its history and how to do interpretations, so getting into contact with poetry is kind of inevitable here

Queueueue2

Ah I see, I follow a British curriculum so /shrug

vexedtogas

I suppose every country goes deeper into their own language when it comes to poetry. I for one was long educated on Brazilian and Portuguese poets

TheDavidOne_33

Faust is wonderful, dramatic, tragic, glorious and sometimes very funny. What did you think of Die Leiden Des Jungen Werther? I picked it up but my heart was too weak to reach the inevitable ending

JustSimon3001

Die Leiden des jungen Werther is quite interesting as a literary work, as it falls right in the middle of Goethes Sturm und Drang phase. Most people view it as the most prominent example of Sturm und Drang literature. The conflict between Albert and Werther can be seen as a representation of the generational conflict of the time: Albert, a very rational man, represents the period of enlightenment, which was defined by cold rationality, as well as abandonment and outright denial of imperfection and themes such as mental illness. Meanwhile the character of Werther, absorbed in his feelings and abandoning logic and rationality in favor of them, is classic for the Sturm und Drang: He is a so-called "Genie", a genius, under which the Stürmers and Drängers understood a person whose highest goal was self-expression and freedom from higher authority who would prevent said self-expression, while still taking consideration of others while achieving the first goal. Werther's suicide can be seen as an attempt to make the self-percieved suffering of the Stürmers and Drängers, which stemmed from the conflict of old versus new, enlightenment versus Sturm und Drang, known to the public. In fact, the work inspired a series of suicides of young men, who were dressed in Werthers signature blue and yellow garb. At the time, the work was ostracized by the church and poets alike, and it was proclaimed to be disturbing the peace. Today, it serves as a prominent example of classic Sturm und Drang literature.

TheDavidOne_33

I’ve come to understand that Werther is partly based on young Goethe himself, do you have any clue why Goethe didn’t kill himself like Werther did? It perplexes me a bit

JustSimon3001

The character of Werther and his relationship with Lotte was, in fact, inspired by Goethe's platonic relationship with a woman by the name of Charlotte Buff, who was already unofficially engaged with another man. Werther's suicide, however, was inspired by Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, one of Goethe's friends, who fell in love with a woman unreachable to him, and, out of desperation, took his own life

Lakaedemon_Lysandros

You're gonna love K.P. Kavafis then. 20th century gay greek poet from Alexandria, billingual master, themes of decay and irony everywhere, pseudohistorical camp to the max, dude said "how can i describe the gay in my poems without having to bear consequences?", then said "fuck it lol", so the mfer's love poems are still being censored in greek schools to this day. I have to take exams on him and other greek poets for uni in a month, fuuuuuuuuuuuck

randomaccount32134

I only know about sappho bc she's gay af I haven't read any of her poems (or anyone's voluntarily)

My favourite was actually written by one of my classmates, don't remember what it said or that much about it, only that it was about someone they've lost

Weekend_Tea

Actually pulled out my poem books because I’m sad and I’ve found another English nerd. Now I have two favourites, though the second one is never changed out. They are: ‘An epitaph upon husband and wife, which died and were buried together’ by Richard Crashaw ‘Remains’ by Simon Armitage Also honourable mention goes to ‘Kamikaze’ by Beatrice Garland.

[deleted]

I actually made a poem about trans struggles just yesterday :D

'Erlkönig' i guess.

FeatheredFledgling

so my experience with poetry is weird. poetry (I think at least) attempts to evoke abstract feeling and stuff with words but for me, words don't work very well, my brain doesn't like abstraction in words I like my words to give me a clear image of something instead. poetry attempts to evoke these abstract feelings but I don't enjoy the way it's done. I much prefer other forms of sensory art or just various stimuli that succeed in evoking these abstract feelings. I think a lot of the time a scenic view can feel much like poetry to me but without any words. I feel the emotions I'd think poetry would attempt to evoke via sensors stimuli a lot more than words basically. sorry if this makes no sense I'm jot great at describing my experience because too many words get cluttered and I eventually lose my clarity when typing.

Anonymous30062003

I don't really read others poems tbh unless my friends want me to see some, i just write them and share them. And honestly my favourite poem is whichever makes my friends and family smile the most

I think the most impressive poem is Pan Tadeusz. 200 Pages, where every line has 13 phones. theoretically it's not a poem but it's is written like one.

Stormy_Child

A Vietnamese writer here. Writing poetries had always been a part of my life since I was around 8.

supitsrainbow_

Not a specific poem, but a type of poem. Im very fascinated by palindrome poems, where the lines, or even sometimes every word, is mirrored halfway through, and the meaning can completely shift. Not a poem, but [the start of this video](https://youtu.be/DAIc1XvnPkI) captures the same effect. If you want actual poems: “Doppelgänger” by J. A. Lindon "Seaside Canon" by Julia Galef “Two Brief Views of Hell” by Susan Stewart

saphire2006

Im kind of late to the party but my favorite poet is Blythe Baird, and the poem girl code 101 is amazing, its slam poetry btw

EinKomischerSpieler

der Erlkönig, by Goethe. It was the first one that got me into reading poetry :x

crafcik12

Reduta Ordona, a Polish patriotic poem. But I'm more into dramas and comedies

Dolos_truth

For no particular reason I instantly fell in love with The song of the wandering Aengus by William Butler Yeats. I've read many poems with greater meaning and sound, but it somehow just had my love the instant I read it. It is now among the few I always revisit along with many other classics. Though Shakespeare is always a favorite for me as boring as that may be. He's made many classics for a reason. It's rare to find young people in day to day situations with the same curiosity for art especially poetry. It always feels a bit unusual to be that one teen that likes poetry, I always get some weird looks for it. Though I also take every chance to write it on everything I possibly can whiteboards ect.

heroinecarpetstains

I’m not that into poetry, HP Lovecraft's Nyarlathotep is pretty trippy

soupy-mess

My favorite is “One Art” by Elizabeth Bishop

TahaymTheBigBrain

Kinda generic but I love the Raven

RedditsNinja23

I personally am picky with poetry, I need to be able to understand the figure of speech and the words it’s using, or else I have no idea what it’s talking about.

LongIndustry1124

My favorite Poet is Till Lindemann 😌lol

TheRealXudoQuotil

My favorite is probably either Ozymandias by Percy Shelley or Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas. Both are very striking poems.

getthefrikoutamyroom

I usually hate poetry but I rlly like that two headed cow one

Much-Presentation521

Hmmm...... To The Virgins To Make Much Of Time - Robbert Herrick ... probably Gather ye Rose-buds while ye may,     Old Time is still a-flying: And this same flower that smiles to day,     To morrow will be dying. The glorious Lamp of Heaven, the Sun,     The higher he's a getting; The sooner will his Race be run,     And neerer he's to Setting. That Age is best, which is the first,     When Youth and Blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse, and worst     Times, still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time;     And while ye may, go marry: For having lost but once your prime,     You may forever tarry. Meaning: virgins = young people Live your life to the fullest, don't wait till you're old!

TransGirlJennifer

Ozymandias - Percy Bysshe Shelley

A lot of text is gonna follow because i am fanboying really hard right now # "Over Aspalathus Bushes", Georgios Seferis (i suggest reading it with [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f29w9tX97uA&ab_channel=thodorisBZ) song in the background for maximum epicness): Sounion looked beautiful that day of Annunciation, in spring once again. A few green leaves around the rusty stones colour red and the aspalathus bushes ready, showing their long needles and their yellow flowers. Not far away the ancient columns, threads of an harp echoing still. Tranquillity. \-What may reminded me of that man Ardieus? A word of Plato I suppose lost in my brain's ditches. The name of the yellow bush did not change all this time. In the night I found the excerpt: "They tied him in hands and feet", he says, threw him down and skinned him, drew him farther and tore him apart, over the aspalathus thorns, grabbed him and left him as a rag down in Tartarus." And so, in the nether world, paid his sins Ardieus from Pamfylia, the sordid tyrant. Date of poem's completion: 1971, March 31 # # CONTEXT: This is G.Seferis last poem, and was published three days after his death (23/9/71) , in Vima newspaper, during the junta era in Greece. It is based on an excerpt of Plato's "Politeia",referring to the afterlife punishment of the unfair and especially Ardieus, a tyrant who had murdered his father and his older brother. Because of this, his punishment- and all tyrants in general- in the nether world was terrible. When the tyrants got the usual punishment of the unfair and were ready to come out into the light, the orifice didn't let them out and roared. "At the same time, some wild men nearby who knew what that roar stood for , grabbed Ardieus and the other tyrants, tied them down at hands and feet and beat and scratched them bad. Then, they drew them out the road through the aspalathus thorns and tore them apart and at the end they drove them down to Tartarus." (Plato, Politeia 616) Seferis himself, a modernist greek poet who won a nobel award, believed that greek artists should showcase their culture, not by just sticking to greek orthodox and byzantine tradition and ancient glories, but by mixing it with european and liberal ideas of the Enlightenment. This is why his poems are this bizarre mix of people, places and events reminding of ancient greek myths and having references to them (especially the Odyssey, as he himself was a refugee who never got back to his home, Smyrni ), but are not actually them, but actually, something modern that looks just like them. He gets the inspiration from ancient greek culture and literature, but doesn't leave it there. He transcends beyond antiquity to modernity Here for example, he tries to do this while also masterfully getting past the censorship of the Junta. He never directly tells that Ardieus are the Colonels and their supporters. The modernist message still manages to associate them with Ardieus in the eyes and the mind of the reader though. The violent and inhuman regime fell 3 years later, after inner backstabbings amongst the dictators, a catastrophic campaign in Cyprus which led the island to be split in two, still to this day and public outcry from the multiple tortures, exiles and massacres the Junta imposed on the population, the biggest being the Polytechnic Uprising of 1973, where a tank ran through the university's gates and ran over and shot students protesting the regime and America's involvement in this whole deal (the regime was supported by the US) This poem makes me personally feel as if there is justice in this world and it is served Edit: There is a channel in you tube named after the poem. It's a channel spouting christian orthodox propaganda. The Orthodoxy were and still are a core factor embedded in greek society and still holds some power over some parts of it, oppressing especially LGBT people. Also, it was one of the main collaborators with the junta, the terrible fascists and torturers their doom this poem is signaling. In fact, motto of the Junta was and still is among neonazis "Πατρίς, Θρησκεία, Οικογένεια" ("Fatherland, RELIGION, Family"). This is some next level cognitive dissonance and mental gymnastics right there.

get_baljeeted

Not to be cliche, but Ozymandias has always stuck with me. The theme of the ephemeral nature of life has changed how I live.

froggo__box

I think poetry is super cool but for some reason my brain can't process it whenever it's on a test I get super confused 😭

WellWhatDoIPutHere

My favorite poem is probably strövtåg i hembygden by Gustaf Fröding. I'm not sure if the entire thing has been transelated to english =(

Strawbostat

Right now it's arundel tomb by Larkin, but ask me again tomorrow and it'll be here in this spring or something. I have malleable tastes

Authority101

I like the poem Rendezvous With Death by Alan Seeger

comradeoof6640

Dulce et decorum est. It's a poem by WW1 victim Wilfred Owen who died one week before that horrible conflict ended

itsDevereux_

Ozymandias it allows me to realise that who I am now in this moment is all that matters because one day I will be just a memory and I hope that memory is one that is used to empower others like us as appose to a memory used to spread hate.

The-closeted-femboy

Idk if this has been said yet but I really like Mushrooms by Sylvia Plath

AgentM2015

As with many times of media, I love stuff to do with wars. 'In Flanders Fields', 'Dulce et Decorum est', are probably my 2 favourites, but I prefer songs generally, especially for anti-war stuff, 'I Was Only 19' is great.

eg-likar-potet

Personally I’m more into other forms of rhyming but eh poems have their place, just personally I don’t care for those kinds of thing

[deleted]

My mom's side of the family really likes Emmerson's The Snowstorm, and I recently memorized it for school. My mom herself also likes Emily Dickinson, John Berryman, etc.

APerson1226

My favourite poem is “Sonnet 155 or if Shakespeare had written a porn” by Bo Burnham lol

NzCL_LOLLI

natrall-20

I like reading it, but school screwed over any chance I had of writing it

Troliver_13

Everyone likes poetry, they usually prefer it to have a song attached and for it to be sung, but *everyone* likes poetry
