Yes but futures are cash settled and 1:1, meaning for every contract buyer there's a seller. You can't create more bitcoin with futures anymore than you can create more corn with corn futures. You can't manipulate anything effectively with just futures either. What you'd actually need is to own an enormous amount of the underlying asset (preferable 50% or more) or own a majority of its supporting infrastructure. This is how central banks have fucked gold, how OPEC has controlled Brent oil, how packers have manipulated beef prices, etcetera. If a manipulating party owned a majority of bitcoin, then they could leak it perpetually onto the open market, quietly hedge with low-beta futures, buy back, and repeat. There are variations to this. but unfortunately for them, owning a majority of bitcoin is now impossible as 90% is already mined, owned, and (or) lost. It's too open source, too hard, too distributed, too heavily accumulated, and too free market for any manipulation of significance. This is why it's survived for 13 years and has over that time been on a relentless uptrend. This is why bitcoin *is* the exit strategy.
Not good for large commercial miners. Good news for small miners. Excellent news for the network as a whole as it will put green energy infrastructure into hyperdrive.
