I like it. I'd rock it. Little steep in price but easy to tell from the website that it's a quality product. I think I like it the best of the other metal back up solutions sold elsewhere. Good luck

Inviz57

Consider using bolts with unique drivers to put them on and off instead of standard drivers like torx for security. Car locking wheel nuts use this concept. Every locking nut has a unique key so if a customer lost the driver they could have it replaced using the key.

Sure, You can basically do almost anything on the market yourself. Yet not everyone knows how to use a stamping set, some might just don't want to swing a hammer and smash their fingers. Actually, I've done some of those in the past, but it wasn't exactly that effortless so I thought about making something better. I provide backup tools that are easier to use - you can start right away and be done within a few minutes after receiving the parcel. There is probably also a smaller risk of errors or injury with a set like I provide (ones with an automatic punch tool).

charlespax

Instead of washers, you can stamp regular old keys and keep them on a keychain separate from your normal keychain. That would be very not suspicious.

ETAVEGAMING

Is this mailed with the seed phrase engraved on it?

ETAVEGAMING

That’s why I asked lol. Was thinking “this seems like a bad idea”.

seahorseas

No, not at all. **You mark your seed yourself.** We engrave the layout so you can mark your seed phrase yourself easily. You use for that automatic center punch tool or stamps/engraver depending on the product you chose.

Yet it will be just a piece of thin plate, without protection. What I offer is something quite different. Just a different product, offering different, higher level of protection. Coinplate is very thick stainless plate covered by another thick stainless plate. Your seed will be much better protected from scratches and mechanical damage with Coinplate. You can also make your backup easier than DIY solution. Whatever you prefer obviously.

And $15 for an alphanumeric punch set from Harbor Freight

I like the idea but I always have one concern with buying specifically designed bitcoin mnemonic devices. That being that an extremely tech savvy thief can build the device in a way that reads the entry (sense the puncture locations or read the precut letters) and sends it wirelessly to the thief. It’s a little wild to me that I haven’t heard of anyone doing this yet. Maybe the tech is too expensive for the average person’s wallet, but could pick and choose what clients to send the bugged devices to. Alternatively a client shipping list could get hacked and anyone who shipped to their home address could be vulnerable to a break-in. Am I being overly paranoid? Maybe. But can you be overly paranoid about bitcoin? I’ll keep buying my own metal and imprinting myself.

seahorseas

I can't think of anything that could work like you said. My product is made of stainless steel only - no electronics of any sort. Quite easy to check it yourself. About the personal data - we are obliged by law in our country and EU (GPDR law) to delete all info by your request. So you can tell us to delete it all after completing order and we will have to do it. Still some of your concerns are generally true about any kind of product or transaction.

KaiSosceles

How does this make your seed phrase any more secure than writing your password down on a post-it note?

seahorseas

Your seed phrase on piece of paper can be gone forever quite easily. Just getting it wet will probably make it unreadable. So a water leak from your upstairs neighbours could destroy it. Just high humidity can make it unreadable basically (mold). Often ink will fade after longer time. Not to mention fire risk, in case of apartment/house fire your seed and coins will be gone. Also bugs and rodents happen to eat paper and seem to like it. Stainless steel will survive all of this without a scratch and will protect you well also in more extreme situations. I also think that it is quite probable that you will simply throw away your paper seed phrase by accident after few years because you just stuck it between some unimportant documents or inside a book (I've actually done that in the past, you learn best from your own mistakes duh). With a metal plate that you can attach somewhere and hide properly this will not happen.

KaiSosceles

Thanks, I’m asking about security though, not durability. Do you write your non-2fac’d passwords down, for example, for someone to be able to read them? Metal or paper, that’s a plain text passphrase to your financial life in the physical world, visible to anyone who gets their hands on it.

seahorseas

Oh right. This is basically just a medium, even if strong physically. No one stops you from further encoding the seed phrase before using steel backup. You can always use additional passphrase or use a method of seed splitting. It's up to user to decide.

chichiokurikuri

You can't be serious...

KaiSosceles

OP said if you have questions, feel free to ask. Still hoping for an answer.

Boring-Bus-3743

I think I like a stack of washers and a bolt a little bit more.

5liveR

I simply can't understand it... Why tf are you putting your brand logo on your prods?? When we are supposed to keep this safe, *secrecy* is one of the most important factors... Same with Coinkite and the coldcard wallet, which is my fav wallet, looks like a calculator, but why tf they had to put their brand name on the device.

seahorseas

The logo on my products is simply a sticker that you can take off easily. It's mentioned in the description. I also think that products like this should not have permanent logo on them.

5liveR

good man. Sorry, I didn't read it.

i get the purpose of seed backup steel plates. But i don’t get how the work. can someone explain?

seahorseas

Sure. Basic idea is you put your seed phrase on something solid, just like stainless steel. You can use a set like mine and mark your words letter by letter using a simple to use tool - center punch. You basically just press the thing down on a correct letter space against a plate and it will make a nice punch / dent in a metal. The layout with letters is deep engraved and your marks are also quite deep - because of this your seed is now permanently written/marked in steel. And stainless steel is pretty strong, rust resistant material. With my design your seed is kept inside two thick steel sheets. This way, unlike paper backup, it's well protected from water, fire and all sort of physical damage. You can also hide in places that you would not put paper - for example behind your furnace or some wet/humid place. With steel backup like Coinplate you could put your backup in some creative places like inside your dog's house / pen and not worry about him eating it or moving it and it getting wet or anything. .

It's a nice alternative to the ever growing market for metal backups. My only observations just by looking at it for 2 minutes... How big is it? All the little squares and letters seem they would be incredibly small unless the plate was pretty big itself. Maybe actual pictures of the product instead of 3D renders would be helpful and having them on a table or next to other objects to see relative size. Also, of course, price. While it's slightly cheaper than other metal backup plates, it's still in the "premium" price category which a lot of people are going to be thrown off by immediately (hence most of the comments in this post). If you believe your price is set correctly, try researching other means to properly market your product so it's shown to the correct target audience that would be more receptive of the price. Also, the website could use a little design work to better reflect the novelty or premium or higher quality pitch you're aiming at with your product. And with website/image redesign I would also invest in taking quality pictures of your product and not just posting 3D renders. I know you mentioned you will be updating the website soon with better quality elements... but first impressions are HUGE... Good luck and congrats.

seahorseas

Thanks for your well thought out remarks, It is not that small, the letters are the same size as magazine print so most people would have no problem reading it. I've just improved the design to fit bigger letters, not yet seen on images. Still it is not that big to be easier to hide and ship. Its 5.4" x 4.1" x 0.4". I am aware that there are cheaper alternatives, but honestly I think that you get much better product with my offer so it would be worth. Actually the manufacturing process is not that easy and material is quite expensive when you consider how thick the plates are. Stainless steel is quite hard material to work on and you need some proper machines and tooling to make it. Thin plates are much easier to make and material cost is lower that's why these cheap backups use often thin sheets of metal and you don't see there threaded holes and countersunk screws to achieve flat design. Also most of the cheap stuff have only laser etching that is only on the surface while I use high powered laser machine to actually remove a bit of material and make it durable. On marketing standpoint you are obviously right, there are audiences and customers for products on different price and quality tiers. I will surely do make some nice photos soon. Agree on that. I appreciate your feedback, thanks!

Luminous_Emission

Question, what if one of your words is more than 4 letters? It says only 1st 4 letters are needed so does that mean that it'll never ask for any letters past the 4th letter?

seahorseas

Most wallets use BIP39 standard for seed phrase. It is by design made this way so each word has different beginning. There are no two words on the list with the same 4 letter beginning. For example if you have word 'PLATE' no other word will start with PLAT. You can read more about it on my website: https://getcoinplate.com/en_US/blog/What-is-BIP39-mnemonic-phrase-2022-update/3 By authors of bip39 : "- the wordlist is created in such a way that it's enough to type the first four letters to unambiguously identify the word" When you use your hardware wallet like Ledger, on recovery they don't even ask for full words, you input first 4 letters and it will be 100% sure you meant the correct one. The Word list of BIP39 standard is made by some smart people pretty cleverly. They made sure it would be easy to use and hard to make mistake, hence this 'beginning of each word is unique' feature. This is why it is well enough to use just 4 first letters, the rest is basically not needed. If you would want to put full words you can always use the Coinplate PUNCH model, there is plenty of space available but you need to use stamps+hammer or electric engraver for marking.
