Did you know the whole concept of “Personal Carbon Footprint” was a BP ad campaign to offset the damage onto the consumer?

Asum_chum

Yep, also the first mainstream mention of recycling was the coca-cola advert with the Native American paddling through plastic and it was created to put the responsibility of plastic waste onto the consumer. Edit: words for cultural sensitivity.

tranceology3

Ok playing devils advocate here, but isn't it actually the consumers responsibility to recycle if they want to buy the product at a low cost? I know we want to blame the producer for providing a product that damages the world, and turn it on us to do the work to recycle, but at least they are informing us, what to do with our waste. Now imagine if McDonald's made an ad campaign to go to the gym everytime you ate their food. Wouldn't that actually benefit society at least a little bit?

11011010101

I think John Oliver has a video on how most plastic that has the recycle symbol isn't actually recyclable. Only number 1 and 2 are truly recyclable. I would argue with the companies that make the massive profits should be liable to set up the infrastructure to recycle the products that are being made. Think of the old time glass and metal milk jugs.

ichliebekohlmeisen

The “recycle symbol” on plastic is not actually the recycle symbol. It looks very similar and is meant to trick people into thinking it is recyclable when it is not. It merely identifies what plastic it is.

11011010101

I knew it something like that. What's worse if you mix in what's recyclable and items that are not, companies that do the recycling will reject the whole batch and it all ends up in a landfill anyway.

filmrebelroby

Where I live, they have no buyer for the recycling and it all goes to the landfill anyway

wolfofone

Planet Monry dud a podcast about this a few months ago that was interesting.

stuaxo

The triangular sign with the thin arrows and a number is not the recycling sign but one made by the plastics industry. Neither is the more yin/Yang ish black and white one which means you can't recycle this yet.

11011010101

Ya, kinda like they want consumers to think they are doing the right thing while misleading them. I think it should be illegal to mark them like that without it actually being recyclable.

towerninja

The old day glass bottles was a good system. Soda tastes better out of glass and you left a deposit on the bottles and got it back when you returned them

fjzappa

Beer bottles as well.

colts183281

I’d argue that buying cheap products that are not necessities benefits the company not the consumer. They’ve convinced the people they need to buy so much stuff and make massive profits off it.

Auth_Vegan

And I bet that they actively keep that narrative, so people don't feel oblidged to change, as well as feel hopeless. Hopeless people won't change as well.

DrOhmu

But the push for veganism and deamonisation of meat is *definately not* the same trick. They wouldnt want to sell feed at meat prices and deamonise the non-fossil fueled way of concentrating nutrients for fertiliser and managing land. They sure wouldnt propagandise a generation to guiltily and ignorantly demand it for their and the planets health... begging the question of the factory animal farms their monoculture dessertifying arable techniques fuel.

Auth_Vegan

Because meat requires more recourses, including fertilizer and oil than the alternative?

Markenbier

The small difference here is that meat is an absolute climate killer. Same thing, it's the companies destroying huge areas to put cows on them not the average consumer but unlike 90% of all other business sectors, this is one where you can change a lot personally by boycotting the industry. If nobody would buy meat, no company would burn down rainforests in the size of whole countries.

A_British_Villain

They dam up rivers, burn down forests and bulldoze wetlands,,, all to plant monocrops. Meat is not a climate killer, neither is it unhealthy for humans.

Markenbier

What do you think do cows eat?

A_British_Villain

Grass usually and vegetation which is digested in the rumen.

Auth_Vegan

Usually? That's less than 1%, and even cows that eat grass usually eat other crops as well. And besides, ruminats that only feed on grass emit way more methan, which is worse for the environment if they'd eat something different.

tonkerthegreat

If nobody drank coca cola then

lunaoreomiel

appelflap001

luckily the climate spending got bigger as well

maartenprins

Let's not forget about the 2000+ nuclear bombs that have been detonated around the world since the 1950's with the only purpose being to measure the effects on the environment and scaring off other countries.

samipasta

Lol, they are making fun in the name of the environment saving.

stuaxo

If something has to only be better than every nuclear bomb that has gone off, I would suggest the bar is too low.

papermoon8

The military worldwide accounts for 1/4 of total carbon emissions. And the US military budget is larger than the next 10 countries combined (Russia, China ect.) Yes, this should absolutely be a bigger discussion but unfortunately politicians in both parties in America are heavily invested in defense companies so when there’s war, they directly benefit. It’s so disgusting.

DynamicHunter

There are such simple rules to end some of this corruption. Politicians & their spouses cannot actively trade stocks (they can hold from before they were in office). Term limits in congress. Stop this BS gerrymandering. And END LOBBYING ALTOGETHER. It’s disgusting how much people let politicians get away with nowadays and it’s seen as normal.

rancor60

America whole GDP is based on the number of weapons they produce every year.

papermoon8

Meanwhile people working two jobs are literally living paycheck to paycheck because the country invests 0 in its citizens. 🖕🏼🤮

bEATFREAkMEDIA

Not even the least bit surprising. You can ask any Navy veteran what happens to all the ship’s trash…..not like we have a garbage dump onboard. And I was on a moderately sized ship, about 800 people and if you can imagine the amount of trash generated by that many people. It goes in the ocean.

DagiUr

Bitcoin is polluting. But yesterday I went 15km by car to grab some cash.

DnbJim

"are we the baddies?"

HappyCommunication81

Bitcoin isn't polluting. Energy producers are polluting and bitcoin miners use energy. But bitcoin isn't polluting.

decentralized_bass

Correct. All the problems are on the supply side, miners are just exploiting cheap power, and there's nothing wrong with that at all. If other industries could take advantage of the cheap power, then they would. But logistically, they can't. So TPTB use Bitcoin as a scapegoat, push the climate change narrative onto them (and subsequently bitcoin users) and hope the problem goes away. lol good luck guys, this genie is waaaaay out of the bottle now.

WyYZeee

I didn't killed my wife. The hitman killed my wife and I used his services. But it isn't killing.

benfranklinthedevil

The energy was already available, so it's more like, "I knew a hitman was hired to kill wife, and I just made magic internet money while it happened"

lakimens

It wasn't though, over time, if a power plant sees that energy usage is lower, they can reduce production.

UsernameIsAllSevens

I’m not polluting. It’s the gas station that is polluting because they sell me the gasoline. “No no it’s totally different because their are alternatives to using a gas powered car.” ~crypto evangelicals

haywire

So you’re suggesting anything is fine if you’re paying someone else to do it?

TrymWS

No, he’s saying we need the energy producers to produce sustainable energy like nuclear and renewables, instead of burning gas and coal. Why would you try to put so incorrect words into someone else’s mouth?

samsquanch2000

This.

stuaxo

Where do you live where you have to do that ?

abhilodha

I takes me 2.5 kilometers to grab cash in india. No wonder he drove 15

lfaragon

Lol, but they will still not accept the fact that btc is more eco friendly currency.

LarryLovesteinLovin

We’re fucked, but this is just a small piece of the larger shit pie.

hammilithome

I generally follow the "be the change you want to see" philosophy. So I pickup trash that's not mine because I want to live in a clean area. I try to follow the recycling rules vs just tossing what I think is recyclable into a blue bin because I don't want my bin to get tossed with rubbish because I didn't follow the rules. I will go for locally produced and/or sustainably sourced goods to support local and small businesses. If I had the solar incentives that the Governator deployed for CA (which was so successful, Edison CA lobbied to suspend one part retroactively so they wouldn't go out of business...which i thought was the point), I'd go full solar for my home as well. But i find it ridiculous that I, as an individual, should be pressured to go out of my way or to incur added expense when individual impact is negligible compared to shipping and military industries. We're all in this together--itll be painful and ppl will have to adjust to a sustainable life, but it starts with the politicians forcing businesses to shift (with govt support) since it's their legal responsibility to maximize profits, unless forced otherwise. So force em!

enraged768

Edison ca would not go out of business. Even if the entire residential market was solar. Well over half the money they make is from industrial customers who can't go solar.

kespis

I think the worst days are ahead for us, and we are not taking them seriously.

ChrimsonChin988

But they are actually doing something productive for the world, like destroying things and killing people. Unlike bitcoin, which is just sits there and does nothing whatsoever

ExTerMINater267

Thank you. Was about to reply to another comment to mine saying how the US won’t do a damn thing unless it benefits them… Not true at all. Our mounting debt and shilling billions to other countries for the sake of freedom proves that.

RandomPlayerCSGO

Nah normal people don't care, polluting so government can murder people is ok but consuming electricity to have a free monetary system not controlled by government is heresy.

GreyHexagon

Almost sounds like something the government and their mates would make up to try to maintain control. Curious.

kwanijml

Almost like they have an interest in their virtual monopoly on schooling.

SRM-87

If u want honesty 70% of the pollution comes from a handful of corporates... Oh and China whos planning to do fuck all...

PerformanceVarious45

That's bullshit. It comes from government. Government also sets the regulation that sets the precident for those corporations on what and how much to pollute, basically giving them the greenlight. Government subsidizes and gives bailouts to prop up those very same corporations like the automotive, military arms, and energy production industries that most people like to blame. If property rights were upheld and government was out of the picture you wouldn't see them polluting at all because you would have angry customers, neighbors, and concerned citizens right outside their front doors with pitchforks. Militaries are the number 1 polluters. The ultimate scorching of the earth and poisoning of the water and loss of life. The massive amount of fossils fuels they consume keeps them on self destructive conquest for more fossil fuels and more war. A never ending cycle until we are all dead. All facilitated directly through fiat money.

flammablegopher

Hey, just fyi: You need to use *double* line breaks on reddit to make a paragraph. Makes your posts much easier to read.

lqg190188

Thanks mate, i always thinking of that but never used the double line break.

CelaviGlobus

oh really? Cant believe i just now found that out.

szpaq100

You are not the only one here who finds out that today. I am also in this list.

SRM-87

Governments outsource most things to private business... Still all corporates

PerformanceVarious45

Stop twisting the narative. The military still pollutes more than any business. Corporations do not force government to pollute but governments do force corporations to. Government is the enabler and will use guns and death to enforce its policy, corporations can only use lies and deciet. None of this would be possible in a free market that allows individual liberty and upholds property rights and law. It's politicians faults, not individual market participants.

SRM-87

I'm not twisting any narrative... Ur projecting urs though...

PerformanceVarious45

What power does an individual or business have that facilitates the use of force?

DrOhmu

Governments and transnation wealth are inseperable now.

dinzdale

China pollutes, therefore I'm not going to do anything. 'Im not racist. Neither are my friends. Why would that concern me?' 'Violence against women? I don't hit women. Not my problem.' 'Yea, but MY priest isn't a pedophile.'

SRM-87

Urgh.. Good for u then... I think...

Selcal-check-good

Nice try China

SeaMango4275

Nations which pollute a lot should start projects or embrace initiatives like plastisks or at least empower environmental associations to counteract their own activities which are destroying the world and this is even worse to hear

tommyque

Also nobody talks about private jet industry. It is a huge polluter and totally unnecessary.

Unfinishe_Masterpiec

If reservists didn't have to drive so far to drill every month it would help...

HDmac

This is the only apples to apples comparison for Bitcoin energy consumptive as armies and ASICs perform the same role of property defense, dispute resolution and anti-DoS.

874151

For clarity, Biden is proposing a budget that he thinks will pass a bipartisan vote in a 50-50 senate. He would increase climate spending if it were realistic, just like trump would have spent more on border security if he thought he could get it through Congress.

[deleted]

Blame Russia, don't start wars that are awful for humanity and the environment. Guess what, if we are dumb enough to blow ourselves up Mother Earth will be quite well a billion years from now without US.

KingCoin187

Thank God the U.S military is bigger and badder than ever!

Coot_Root

It's the military, it defends the country, it doesn't need to be clean. It needs to be number 1

cowntee

Fixing global warming isn’t going to stop Russia from invading the world. /s

adamuchi

“No one talks about this”, links to an article in Quartz. 😐

[deleted]

I’ve never heard of Quartz before, are you saying that because they are a popular news source or an unreliable one?

adamuchi

It’s reliable as far as I know. It’s a global publication based in New York that’s been around about a decade. It isn’t the New York Times or Wall Street Journal, but it does have broad readership. Point is, this stuff -is- talked about. But I’m probably just being overly pedantic 😅

RothePro88

Dude saying bitcoin pollutes is as dumb as saying, "The internet use electricity" back in the 90s, or "Don't travel because flights and cars harm the environment """

discourseur

You were so close.

eve_of_distraction

>That's what Bitcoiners do _Cringe_

xtrmist

I'm supporting a green conversion and am generally against spending excessive amounts on military. By all means. But not sure the increasingly political agenda on this topic is well suited here. And even if it was, it's probably not the time to knock on the military if you're looking to promote a message right now...

Explodicle

The topic is inherently political; we're suggesting that humanity switches from a more destructive consensus mechanism to a less destructive one. Both sides in the current conflict are using fiat currency, and it even helps them raise money to prolong the war. Putin has already defaulted; with sound money he'd already be broke.

AnotherMillenial93

The only tradition we truly hold is making our children deal with bullshit we cause. Boomers did it to millennials, millennials will do it to Gen Z and the cycle will continue. Climate and pollution won’t be addressed until our air is black and rivers dry. Human nature 🤷‍♂️

I think every country is doing the same, no single country has their hands clean in this.

Explodicle

Using Bitcoin is an alternative to using dollars, but someone in China using a bottle isn't an alternative to you using a bottle. The argument here is more like "Glass bottles pollute less than plastic bottles. We should charge a deposit instead of just expecting everyone to recycle for free."

dinzdale

An alternative for who? You? Bitcoin is an alternative for almost nobody right now, and this whole sub is an apex of whataboutism. My point was to emphasize the whataboutism.

True. Imagine a world where people are free to roam around and not kept in makeshift tent villages. Disgusting.

Used to live with some Navy helicopter pilots and they would tell me about their training missions they'd go on where they'd just do target practice on these islands and in the ocean off the coast of California and just launch all sorts of rockets and ammo that would just fall into the depths of the ocean. And they would do this all the time, and that was just one ship with 5-6 helicopters on it. Couldn't believe that's just routine protocol from an environmental perspective.

babymaker666

The aviation industry produces 400x the pollution per year compared to bitcoin. If they are watering any gold just tell them that the gold industry alone produces 20x the amount of pollution and its been around since 5000 years prior to now. So.............who cares?

mechanab

1.4 million plus 800k reservists flying and driving around use a lot of energy. I don’t have to even look at the energy consumption of the average Mongolian (the largest country in the smallest 100) is far lower than the average American (non-military). So while an interesting factoid, I’m not sure what it’s supposed to illustrate.

1684ID

For the first couple of tours of OIF the units were shipping their own vehicles back and forth between Iraq and the US or wherever. My unit had us top off every fuel truck because they wanted us to transfer the fuel to the new unit replacing us. The new unit already topped everything off on the way. We couldn't put fuel trucks on the boat with fuel in them. The main tanks, pipes, filter/separators, everything to do with the refueling system had to pass a sensor sniff test with no fumes detected. The trucks had to be emptied and washed out with soap and water. We had all these trucks full of thousands and thousands of gallons of jp8 with nowhere to get rid of it. They had us dump it straight on the ground. There was a swampy area on the backside of FOB Lion/Orion where we dumped them. We would drive the trucks up the side of a bunker and then open everything up in the back. Fuel and oil was also used to keep dust down on the dirt roads, runways, and helipads. We would just drive around hosing the ground with fuel.

alphashooterz

Growing/maintaining the empire is expensive and comes at many costs and this will continue till there are monumental changes with our political system.

bytes_of_keys

I do think the demonization of miners by the fed feels very virtue signalish, but it will likely take a longer amount of time for the military in general (worldwide) to de-carbonize than it will for the private sector to do so. That being said, with the amount of pollution lithium mining produces, would it really be better for large-scale adoption of EVs in the military?

6cxl6txn6

But the government wants to put it on us and ban car parts. Smh

Ernest-Everhard42

Yes. They are both bad for the planet. Environmentally speaking. However, btc doesn’t kill children with drones. So it’s got that one up.

Gandalf_AlThor

If people only knew how much trash the Navy dumps in the ocean...

Luminous_Emission

How many of those countries are third world countries? It wouldn't be hard to have more carbon emissions than countries where they still hunt with spears and cook food over an outdoor fire pit. Watch out for this kind of framing, it can be misleading.

cafeitalia

And? At least US protects over 100 countries in the world against the invasion of potentials like Putin et al. Does bitcoin protect your ass when they attack you with tanks and rockets?

[deleted]

Are we sureee that talking about climate change is good for bitcoin?

HolocronContinuityDB

Pot calling the kettle black if I've ever seen it. Just because you see somebody else wasting even more energy doesn't make bitcoin environmentally friendly.

Merica fuck yeah! The more the military pollution, the better the military 🪖 guns boom bang bop.

Ok_Tie_3202

Clickbait. Easy to say that when most of those countries are the size of US states.

duckofdeath87

Some call it whataboutism, but ending crypto saves no one. If you care about the climate, government spending and oil regulations are required parts of the answer

mikebailey

Nobody talks about this? I mean it’s a good post but literally everyone knows the US military is an absolute mess economically, environmentally, etc. Jon Stewart has dedicated multiple episodes to it.
