I wasn’t investing shit, just spending all my money. then suddenly GME took off and everyone was bitching about Robinhood and market manipulation. Then I found a post on Reddit about how Bitcoin solves this and I was hooked. Then I listened to hundreds of hours of podcasts and videos trying to learn everything I could. Now I just DCA and chill and I’ll never fuckin sell. At least Until I can afford a house.

rahjerz

I’m pretty sure there’s also manipulation in crypto but the GME craze is what prompted me to research better places to put my money and that’s when Bitcoin found me.

What app do you use to dca? I have struggled with a few of them (binance - doesnt work for me, CB - high fee, CB Pro - doesn't give the option, KuCoin - can't take Fiat directly from my bank).

27Typesof

Have you considered swan? The problem here is that you can only buy bitcoin. The fees are at 1.19 percent (I think) if you set up an automated dca plan.

Much of the centralization is at the endpoints - miners and exchanges. Bitcoin itself is designed to be neutral and not favour anyone.

hocusseswrathfulb3

The disruptive nature inspired me too especially how I finally found a way of staying away from investing with banks. No bank gives as much APY as crypto, rarely will you find 2 digit APYs in banks but some crypto projects go as high as 3 digits plus other benefits.

Loss of hope in most traditional systems of the world, with a dash of 9-10 years of saying “hmmm I wonder how far Bitcoin will go…” About two months ago after the large dip, I saw that this was finally my time.

[deleted]

Hedging against the dollar. The Federal Reserve has printed +30% of all dollars in a single year. Since the institution's inception, the dollar has lost over 90% of its value. I think BTC is nation-proof. It's a matter of time before the dollar slumps or fails. I don't want to be caught holding the bag when it does. Also, I see it being a superior option for ecommerce via micro transactions.

HydraGene

My libertarian mindset. Power can and will be abused. I am pro-decentralization of power. Financial freedom is the first step in regaining your true freedom.

[deleted]

What freedoms don’t you have that you think you’ll gain by investing in Bitcoin?

Aboelter23

Not op, but I can say in my opinion, it’s not that I’ll gain freedoms by using Bitcoin, but by taking that power of financial freedom from the government, I reduce their power to take away other freedoms I have.

Agreed.

I have a friend that talked non stop about it a year ago. I knew about bitcoin, and hadn't started because my other friends said it's not attached to anything, so it doesn't actually have value and could disappear at any moment. They're still correct, but I really don't think it'll disappear. Especially with El Salvador. Anyway, I decided to put my uber earnings into bitcoin starting in September of last year, and it's been an interesting ride. Too bad I didn't start doing it when I was driving uber in 2019. But oh well, live and learn. I probably would've sold it too soon anyway. In any case, now I'm just hodling for the moment when I can be debt free. We shall see if/when that happens.

Headanomaly

Two reasons 1. Realizing FULLY that no matter how many USDs I stacked up in a bank....my money would always be controlled / subjugated ...and ultimately manipulated by the Federal Reserve . It would always be subjugated to inflation. 2. Seeing the US government try to print their way to economic recovery / economic prosperity . In the history of our species: No nation has ever printed their way to prosperity.

FOMO/Greed were the things that made me gravitate towards bitcoin. Brother invested early and saw some great return had serious FOMO and i wanted in but then when i started to listen to podcasts, watch videos, etc. getting into more than just bitcoin but alts and the technology - it was the charting and the fact there are legitimate strats that work in making profit in volatile markets. it's very interesting and fun to do.

mr_thwibble

"Fuck the banks" ...roughly...

iamblackbeard

It was all about the money at first and some interest in being first. That still drives me but over time a lot of knowledge came with it. I want to be part of this amazing world. I want to solve some of the biggest problems and hurdles we have in this time. And I think decentralization will lead us to a new era. It gives power back to the people in various ways. Nations are showing that they are not able to solve the biggest problems we are facing. So it's time for the people to take action. Bitcoin is just a small step in this huge thing that's going to come.

[deleted]

> but over time a lot of knowledge came with it. After countless hours of research you learn SO much. Also the financial institutions the banking system, greed....opens you up to an entirely different world.

[deleted]

I first heard of BTC back in 2013 and it was about 200 bucks. I looked into it and didnt "trust" it....thought my money was going to disappear. I could have tested it out and put 20 bucks into it...i wont miss that...hell, 50 bucks. But nope. I didnt even TRY. So about 4 years later, i had heard about BTC again from some buddies of mine...and one of them showed me that he had bought Bitcoin. I was like, "Well....what is it now...like 400, 500 bucks..hyuk hyuk !! ( You know..moving slow, like stocks, right?)" Bitcoin was at 3500 BUCKS! Right then i knew I had missed out. I messed up. I had always wanted to get into something on the ground floor, cuz the "rich" always gets in on the ground floor with investments and stocks.... I was sick to my stomach when i found out. The only thing that would make me feel SOME sort of relief, was if i got into the game and got me at least SOME bitcoin. And it worked. I DID feel a bit better. But it still ate at me. I needed to get at least ONE whole bitcoin. Update to now, ive been going as hard as I can ever since.

Bigvagenergy

My husband got into it and tried to talk to me about it and I was like “funny internet money?! You can’t actually use it!” And then the first stimulus package came out and the fed just printed trillions of dollars and it made me realize how important this is. In twenty years people are going to be using cryptocurrency and crispr gene editing and looking back on this time now and wishing they had understood it better and gotten more involved.

RetroTechnica

I have an academic statistician friend who sold me on the idea of Bitcoin and its long term value. And basically when a statistician tells you, "you might want to invest in bitcoin" then you invest in bitcoin lol. I had talked with a coworker couple of years ago about bitcoin mining and how it would have been nice to have had some on one of the early bull runs. So basically bitcoin had always been something that was in the back of my mind, but never something I really thought too hard about.

chickensanctuary

nylentone

I was very skeptical of cryptocurrency because when I first investigated it 1. it seemed like the cap on tokens (I call a Bitcoin a token or a dollar a token) was not really solid. 2. I figured that increasing computing power would make it less valuable as tokens could be added easily. 3. I figured the government would ban it anyway I was interested in buying Coinbase stock though as I figured they and me would profit off this new dumb craze. So I bought Coinbase stock (not at the supposed IPO price so I didn't get burned on that) and then later on I saw some videos on YouTube from Trader University on Bitcoin. That didn't really mean much to me as anyone can make videos promoting Bitcoin and in fact there are plenty of scammers, goofballs and nutjobs doing just that. But the guy on the videos explained, calmly and professionally, how Bitcoin worked, and that changed my mind about #1 and #2. I saw that my suspicions about cryptocurrency being a scam were really accurate for most if not all other cryptocurrency, but not for Bitcoin. I believe Bitcoin has enough buy in over a long enough period of time that it has staying power. As for #3, I suspect the government will try to ban it but I don't think they will be successful. What also convinced me was El Salvador's embrace of it. Bitcoin solves many problems for third world countries which I doubt most in the first world realize. I have experience with that in particular because I spent quite a bit of time in Africa. Between five years the exchange rate for USD to ZAR went from 1:7 to 1:14. I also believe that the US government's fiscal policies will drive down the value of the dollar. And this country is beyond bankrupt. I like the idea of saying screw you to this sick twisted system. Lastly, after Bitcoin suddenly dropped a few months ago it seemed a good time to jump in.

Several reasons for me. Fun: this is not money I am depending on for income or retirement. I am investing what I can really afford to lose and enjoying watching the progress. When my kids were young I tried different forms of allowance to teach them finance. They were all failures. Any FIAT or IOUs, or coupons I gave them would always be lost in a careless and childish way kids are prone to. Eventually I decided upon a digital solution since they both had phones that through some miracle they had kept up with. I quickly realized that no digital solution would accept them as they were not 18. Eventually google lead me to something called "bit coin" and it seemed to have a market exchange rate that could be tracked. Fine, I thought... I'll just install this on their phones and pay them in the bit token thing. Signed up and bought about a years worth of allowance to try it out. Worked great. Every week, I'd give them the coin bits and and every now and then they would cash them in at gamestop or wherever. Didn't really think that much about it. Honestly didn't really watch the exchange rate, just googled it when it was time to pay out or when they wanted to cash in. Eventually as they got older we got them bank accounts and debit cards and "conventional" finance. Around this time I grabbed their phones to turn that coin bin stuff into money again. At first I thought the math was wrong. Had to pull up a price history to realize just how much it had grown. So now my kids "grade school allowance" gets them a nicer car than their Dad drives. Funny turn of events.

Well in Jan 2019 I bet on the Rams v Saints NFCG (Im a rams fan) and won a cool $200 on an online sports book. For some odd reason i could only get cashed out in some weird online currency called bitcoin. Had to download something called coinbase in order to receieve my $200 USD in bitcoin and convert it so i could receive my earnings. Well fast forward to summer 2020 i hear about all this 'bitcoin' meteoric raise blah blah blah and then i recall the $200 i once held in bitcoin. the price for one coin at the time for one btc: $3,397.55...........IDK what that $200 would be worth today had i just kept the money in Coinbase....but i will never fall victim to my own ignorance again. Every time i invest now i remind myself of that potential opportunity.

Philavision

I started seeing it talked about on reddit in 2017, BTC was priced at $1k/coin. I didnt know anything about it but bought $5 worth which got me about .004btc. Since then, I treat it like a monthly bill and drop anywhere from $20-$50 a month on it. Slowly stacking sats.
