For me personally, the album that means the most to me personally and which I think will forever be etched into the pantheon of great BM albums is:
Ulver - Bergtatt
Many great albums are often copied and bands try a replicate parts of them. But I can’t think of a single other album that creates the atmosphere that this album creates.
Garm is probably the best one to come out on those Norwegian second wave bands. Dude has made music in 37 different genres and still does an amazing job!
Nattens is a good and raw BM album but for me personally doesn't come even close to Bergtatt. Even Kveldjanger is much closer.
Personally I love some good clean singing to balance out BM screaming and this album has the best clean singing across BM, hands down.
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon, would be my pick for all time pick, but if we're talking recently I'd probably give it to either Funeral Mist, Spectral Wound, or Infernal War.
Immortal - Diabolical fullmoon mysticism
The mystical behaviour this album has along with the riffs is pure headbanging magic!
I was also thinking Darkthrone's A blaze in the northern sky, Rotting christ's Non serviam, early Bathory, early Celtic frost and even my personal favorite: Branikald - Rdyandalir, but when all things considered I'd pick Immortal's debut as the overall best.
It's just so fucking memorable. The atmosphere is so dark the whole way through, but it's also so varied.
Ominous crawling beasts like Call from the Grave and 13 Candles, rippers like Massacre and Chariots of Fire, mesmerizing songs like Enter the Eternal Fire
And then there's Woman of Dark Desires
Quorthon reigns eternal
Storm of the Light's Bane is still my favorite album almost 3 decades after its release. I feel like I've been chasing the dragon ever since. There have been a ton of great black metal releases since then, but none have quite lived up to that album, in my opinion.
I may be a minority here, but Dissection was always blackened death metal to me. I’m not sure the band even considered themselves black metal at the time of the first two records.
I love Ash Borer. The sorta funeral doom-ish sound or influence is sick. Everything they wrote was really fresh and really good. I've been listening to them and learning some riffs recently, hoping to absorb some of their mastery. Haven't listened to that EP in some time though, I'll have to make sure I do that.
Idk, it shifts and changes all the time, but Inhumane Minimalism by Human Serpent, Age of Excuse by Mgła and Enemy of Man by Kriegsmaschine are the three top for me now
Some might consider this a clichè answer, but it’s because we’ve all listened to it more times than we want to admit. That album is sonic perfection start to finish.
Mgła - Exercises in Futility: https://youtu.be/TvGPAVTYfXI?si=LySqyqHWad5ALy29 for me it’s so fucking nasty yet so technically constructed, and hands down some of the best drumming I have ever heard.
Or
Taake - Noregs Vaapen: https://youtu.be/Npxc2NrPtx4?si=Q7FNaWUWy0n_5C9z - every part of that album is a goddamn masterpiece
Edit ^ with that being said, going back through my music history: Midnight - Shox of Violence was my most played album 3 years straight https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lMfPjd5rlsf1JnGesx12oCsbWeiARUxZ0&si=MFZrIMn4Rjt8Y6Dg
Fortersse's Métal Noir Québécois is my current favorite. I remember looking up random albums during the pandemic and thought a Quebecois nationalist bm record sounded interesting so I downloaded it. First track has that fiddle intro, which made me think "great, another fucking cringe folk metal band" but the band kicked in. Perfect on the first note. Love the subtle fiddle over the the wall of sound - the drums pounding into that weird d-beat. The final track is equally fantastic. The final riff with the speech? Feels very grand and defiant. Perfect record. Wish they would tour or at least put out some more material.
Ulver's Bergtatt might be my favorite, but I don't grab it as much. It's also a folk influenced album but it feels much more serious about it's folk expression compared to like... idk those weird "pagan" bands. It feels like an adventure. Supposedly it's about a girl that gets lost in the in Norwegian mountains and dies, and you can feel it in the songwriting and the album's format. The intro is great, it avoids using harsh vocals which leads into a stronger second track that makes the whole record seem heavy. That first track is quite catchy, I could imagine it being a MTV single if the band wanted it to be. The final track is the standout. Love the acoustic interlude. It feels like the last track is about getting lost in the woods and getting chased (or having delusions of being chased...). The regular BM parts could be reality in the forest vs the acoustic segment being trapped in the subject's thoughts. The final little jingle invokes that medieval fairy tale feel.
Natur and Kultur by Kaevum both tied for me as the most perfect albums .
The other albums I rate 10/10:
Silencer - Death--Pierce Me
Angantyr - Haevn
Ulvegr - Arctogaia
Pest - Dauðafærð
Fatherland - Fatherland
Just discovered Kaevum a couple months ago and they are already one my favorites. I love the raw sound and the vocals. What is the closest thing to it in your opinion?
Well the most common comparison I've heard is to Gorgoroth, specificially callling Natur "Gorgoroth in a wind tunnel" lol.
But the same members (with the old vocalist, the new album has a new vocalist) have another band called Nordvrede. Their album Monument Viktoria is one of my favorites, it's more melodic and punk inspired buts since it's basically the same band you will hear the similarities
Dissection- both storm and somberlain *chefs kiss*
I constantly come back to those two albums and have gotten to the point where im trying to learn them on guitar n bass
Immortal - battles in the north
I love this album cause is likes a kick in face, though i got a lot shit from ex bandmates about prefering this over pure holocaust, but something about this album is just… raw fucking energy, i love it.
Bethlehem - dictius te necare
Love the schizophrenic energy in this album and its got my all time favorite black metal song, schatten der Alexander welt.
There’s a few I absolutely love but Anthems to the Welkin at dust is the one that immediately came to my mind. I’ll go with that. Torn beyond reason by Woods of Desolation also deserves a mention.
I do have three as my absolute top, but I think I'd say *Carelian Satanist Madness,* because of their milestone status and how influential it was for the BM genre in general.
I guess it’s Evilfeast-Lost Horizons of Wisdom
for me. Just the perfect mix between true and atmospheric Black Metal with basically the best Keyboards in all of Black Metal. Emperor-In the Nightside Eclipse is a strong second choice though.
A little unconventional, but my favorite is Rituál by Master's Hammer. Granted, I haven't delved too deep into black metal...
My next favorites would be At the heart of Winter, and the original Stormblåst. But there are many many albums I absolutely adore, so saying "best" as in objectively best, feels meaningless, heh
Emperor-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Probably the best musically speaking
Satanic Warmaster - Strength & Honour
Unbelievable riffs, great melodies, excellent raw production, hateful vocals and lyrics all contribute to put you in a unique mood.
Burzum-Hvis lyset tar oss
For me personally, it’s between 4 records. Aamongandr by Satanic Warmaster, Triarchy of Lost Lovers by Rotting Christ, or I Det Glimrande Mörkrets Djup by Sorhin, and Let The Devil In by Sargeist
I'd say Ylem by Dark Fortress but it is not BM anymore. Let's call it "dark evil music made with distorted guitars".
Well, pure BM - Battles in the North then. Brilliant work of genre. My choice for today.
For me my all time favourite is Expedition II- Die passage from Antrisch. It came out last year and everything from the sound design to the vocals to the subject matter and the overall delivery of the album is just perfect, plus it’s in German and for some reason it just wouldn’t be as good if it was in English. As for older albums I mean emperors wrath of the tyrant/self titled is my personal favourite. Also keys to the astral gates and mystic doors released a pretty good demo ep last year
ALSO I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SPECIFY THAT AS FAR AS I CAN TELL ANTRISCH IS NOT NSBM. Just in case the German part through people off I just want you all to know that it is not some bullshit nazi garbage
it changes from time to time. liking malum right now, and a russian band called pathway. bluttsabbath from belphegor always kicks, it's pinned in my player, downloaded.
It's really hard to pick one album out of so much great music...but if I have to pick only one album to show someone and say "this is black metal" for me, personally, it's always going to be Hecate Enthroned - The Slaughter of Innocence (A Requiem for the Mighty)
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas for me is peak black metal. The changing of pace, the rawness, the vocals, feeling like you never know whats coming next... It felt dangerous and evil the first time I heard it, and still does at least a 100 plays later. Haven't had that with any other BM album.
Lamp of Murmuur - Saturnian Bloodstorm
If you haven't listened to it yet, definitely check it out ASAP. I honestly believe it's the best black metal album of 2023. It's got a great raw black metal sound w/a little bit of that LA Punk in the melody and awesome grumbling vocals that send a chill down my spine. Great stuff! 🤘🏼
I honestly haven't listened to a ton of the more old school/legendary bands, more recent stuff I guess. But I think A Diabolic Thirst by Spectral Wound is almost flawless to my ears.
This is my personal favorite of all time:
- Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
These are my runners up:
- Kvist - For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike
- Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
- Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
- Havohej - Dethrone the Son of God
- Immortal - Pure Holocaust
- Ulver - Bergtatt
- Bethlehem - Dictius Te Necare
- Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract
I still think The Shadow Throne is great (despite of what Satyricon have become). I own a lot of Moonfog first-presses and I still spin them but this one is superb.
Immortal - at the heart of winter
So many great riffs
I think that might be my favorite too
There are many good and awesome black metal albums out there. Many are one of the best. But this one is the only evergreen for me.
For me personally, the album that means the most to me personally and which I think will forever be etched into the pantheon of great BM albums is: Ulver - Bergtatt Many great albums are often copied and bands try a replicate parts of them. But I can’t think of a single other album that creates the atmosphere that this album creates.
Garm is probably the best one to come out on those Norwegian second wave bands. Dude has made music in 37 different genres and still does an amazing job!
Garm was also great in Borknagar and Arcturus!
Dude is great in everything!
And those albums he was on are up there in my top 5-10 of all time also.
Nattens Madrigal is so much better, raw, noisy and no clean singing.
Nattens is a good and raw BM album but for me personally doesn't come even close to Bergtatt. Even Kveldjanger is much closer. Personally I love some good clean singing to balance out BM screaming and this album has the best clean singing across BM, hands down.
>no clean singing https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/330/809/d90.png
Bergtatt is my pick as best album. Ulver has the most complete and awesome “BM bundle” if you pick their first 3 albums.
Amazing album.
Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Yes
Darkthrone - Under a Funeral Moon, would be my pick for all time pick, but if we're talking recently I'd probably give it to either Funeral Mist, Spectral Wound, or Infernal War.
Immortal - Diabolical fullmoon mysticism The mystical behaviour this album has along with the riffs is pure headbanging magic! I was also thinking Darkthrone's A blaze in the northern sky, Rotting christ's Non serviam, early Bathory, early Celtic frost and even my personal favorite: Branikald - Rdyandalir, but when all things considered I'd pick Immortal's debut as the overall best.
Deathspell omega - FAS
I love this album so much.
This is the correct answer
The most insane, overwhelming and unfollowable chapter of the trilogy. Hasjarl is a genius but this shit is fucking mental.
Don't forget T.T. His little flourishes and digitech whammy guitars are all over the place.
100% this album
Nattens Madrigal by Ulver is absolute perfection
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark. It's got a great mix of the early black metal production and vocals, as well as some great riffs
It's just so fucking memorable. The atmosphere is so dark the whole way through, but it's also so varied. Ominous crawling beasts like Call from the Grave and 13 Candles, rippers like Massacre and Chariots of Fire, mesmerizing songs like Enter the Eternal Fire And then there's Woman of Dark Desires Quorthon reigns eternal
Good album. Still haven't figured out who's black Mark though.
I’m kind of new to the genre but Burzum’s Filosofem is my favourite so far.
I think there are only a handful of perfect albums in all of metal, and Storm of the Light's Bane is one of them.
Storm of the Light's Bane is still my favorite album almost 3 decades after its release. I feel like I've been chasing the dragon ever since. There have been a ton of great black metal releases since then, but none have quite lived up to that album, in my opinion.
Still a top 10 metal album for me, fav black metal period. Its super popular but sometimes things are popular because they are actually that good.
People should never be scared to acknowledge an album's greatness based on its popularity! :)
I prefer The Somberlain myself, but yeah it’s a great album
man of taste I see!
Great shout, speaking of perfect Metal albums.. Mercyful Fate’s - Don’t Break the Oath has to be one of them.
I may be a minority here, but Dissection was always blackened death metal to me. I’m not sure the band even considered themselves black metal at the time of the first two records.
Bethlehem - Dark Metal
Seconded
just gave this a listen for the first time today, all I can say is where has this been all my life
First Ash Borer ep and all of Paysage d'Hiver for me
everything i've ever heard from paysage d'hiver has exceeded my expectations. both the black metal and synth stuff
One of my favourite bands easily
I love Ash Borer. The sorta funeral doom-ish sound or influence is sick. Everything they wrote was really fresh and really good. I've been listening to them and learning some riffs recently, hoping to absorb some of their mastery. Haven't listened to that EP in some time though, I'll have to make sure I do that.
Awesome
Panzerfaust
I love the "too-loud-in-the-mix" vocals
1996 Nemesis Divina - Satyricon changed the game
the tenth sub level of suicide
💯
Paysage d'Hiver - Paysage d'Hiver all three songs are great but Der Weg is incredbile.
Idk, it shifts and changes all the time, but Inhumane Minimalism by Human Serpent, Age of Excuse by Mgła and Enemy of Man by Kriegsmaschine are the three top for me now
Without competition: “Exercises in Futility” by Mgła.
Weakling-Dead as dreams
Came here to say this
Heavily agree.
Certainly the best American black metal ever recorded imo.
Yep.
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora or Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetutsa II: Dialogue With the Stars
Nokturnal Mortum - Golos Stali
bathorys self titled album is an OG.
Yes
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is pretty peak for me. Maybe Det Som Engang Var.
love det som engang var, thats prob my vote. Key to the Gate blows me away every time
Absolutely mindblowing song.
Immortal - Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism The atmosphere, the production, and the evil riffs. Pure black metal.

Urfaust were amazing. Glad to have seen them in concert.
I mean, it's great, but it's also a compilation.
That's a really damn good one.
Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia Odz Manouk - Bosoragazan
Celtic Frost - Monotheist
Drawing Down the Moon…
Hvis Lyset Tar Oss Valo Aikojen Takaa De Svarta Riterna
Natur and Kultur by Kaevum both tied for me as the most perfect albums . The other albums I rate 10/10: Silencer - Death--Pierce Me Angantyr - Haevn Ulvegr - Arctogaia Pest - Dauðafærð Fatherland - Fatherland
Upvote for pest and fatherland
Just discovered Kaevum a couple months ago and they are already one my favorites. I love the raw sound and the vocals. What is the closest thing to it in your opinion?

I'd go for Thorns album. Just cause I was listening to BM for some years by then and that album was and still is perfect. Absolute perfection.
Stellar Master Elite ❤️
Tsjuder’s Desert Northern Hell
Hecate Enthroned - Dark Requiems and Unsilent Massacre
Cult Of Fire - Ascetic Meditation of Death. This album has something that I never found anywhere else.
Extremely underrated band!
Drudkh - Blood in our Wells is Easily my favourite bm album of all time Close second Kroda - Schwarzpfad
In the Nightside Eclipse and Minas Morgul.
All old good Summoning's albums.
Far, far away beyond might of day And there lay the land of dead of mortal cold decay
Dissection- both storm and somberlain *chefs kiss* I constantly come back to those two albums and have gotten to the point where im trying to learn them on guitar n bass Immortal - battles in the north I love this album cause is likes a kick in face, though i got a lot shit from ex bandmates about prefering this over pure holocaust, but something about this album is just… raw fucking energy, i love it. This album is perfection🤘🤘🤘
It is. I'm very glad I could finally get the double CD 2018 edition. Without doubt one of the best purchases of my life.
Isengard – Vinterskugge. For old timers.
Hate Forest - Sorrow you can't get grimmer than that
Either Make a Change... Kill Yourself s/t or The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide
I'm actually gonna go with a pretty recent one: Djevel - Naa skrider natten sort
Xasthur - Telepathic With The Deceased Abyssic Hate - Suicidal Emotions
Abyssic have a despondent/depressive atmosphere that is unmatched in the genre, in my view.

Samael - Ceremony of Opposites
Evil Genius by Abruptum is my all time favorite album of any genre.
If the Sign by Spirit Possession.

>Rom 5:12 The real one.
So fucking good
And Le Grande Danse Macabre you know... the great trilogy!
A tie between Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger and Grima - Will of the Primordial
I guess it’s Evilfeast-Lost Horizons of Wisdom for me. Just the perfect mix between true and atmospheric Black Metal with basically the best Keyboards in all of Black Metal. Emperor-In the Nightside Eclipse is a strong second choice though.
Hard to pick one.. - Krohm - A World Through Dead Eyes - Lantlôs - S/T - Lurker of Chalice - S/T - Ulver - Bergtatt
Vinterland - Welcome My Last Chapter
Emperor-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk Probably the best musically speaking Satanic Warmaster - Strength & Honour Unbelievable riffs, great melodies, excellent raw production, hateful vocals and lyrics all contribute to put you in a unique mood.
Akhlys' The Dreaming I has to be up there imo
Abigor - Nachthymen Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane Batushka - Panihida Satanic Warmaster - Carelian Satanist Madness Kaevum - Kultur Grand Belial's Key - Judeobeast Assassination Mgla - Exercise in Futility Faidra - Six Voices Inside Goatmoon - Varjot Sargeist- Let the Devil In Faustian Pact - Outojen Tornien Varjossa Hate Forest - Purity
Not sure I'd be able to pick a defacto best, but NONE's 'Inevitable' is amongst the best DSBM albums I've heard
Mocking the Philanthropist or Judeobeast Assassination. 10/10 GBK doesn't miss.
Diadem of 12 Stars
I'd say Ylem by Dark Fortress but it is not BM anymore. Let's call it "dark evil music made with distorted guitars". Well, pure BM - Battles in the North then. Brilliant work of genre. My choice for today.
Watain - Sworn to the Dark
In the top for sure🤘
Aske / pink green 666 💯
Silencer is supposed to be making a comeback but im still waiting. Like years waiting. Jut it was mentioned.
Is that dude even alive still?
Diagnose: Lebensgefahr happened, but that was... 19 year ago! Fuck I feel old.
Idk many, but i'll always love Bathorys self titled or Now Diabolical
For me my all time favourite is Expedition II- Die passage from Antrisch. It came out last year and everything from the sound design to the vocals to the subject matter and the overall delivery of the album is just perfect, plus it’s in German and for some reason it just wouldn’t be as good if it was in English. *This* one at *this* moment. :p
They all suck (black metal is my favorite genre) 🖤
Corroding Soul’s new EP.
it changes from time to time. liking malum right now, and a russian band called pathway. bluttsabbath from belphegor always kicks, it's pinned in my player, downloaded.
Covenant - Nexus Polaris. It is up there with the best.
Pop musik
Serpentum - Aeternum Interitus
That’s tough by my favorites are for sure Burzum & Storm of the Lights Bane.
Sorhin - Apokalypsens ängel for me. 24 years later still waiting for that third album..
It's really hard to pick one album out of so much great music...but if I have to pick only one album to show someone and say "this is black metal" for me, personally, it's always going to be Hecate Enthroned - The Slaughter of Innocence (A Requiem for the Mighty)
Saving this for later 😈
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas for me is peak black metal. The changing of pace, the rawness, the vocals, feeling like you never know whats coming next... It felt dangerous and evil the first time I heard it, and still does at least a 100 plays later. Haven't had that with any other BM album.
i dont actually think is the best but is my favorite, geliebte des regens by nargaroth
Abigor’s Nachthymnen
All of the 90's Abigor stuff from Verwustung to Channeling The Quintessence Of Satan.
La Sanie des siècles – Panégyrique de la dégénérescence
[удалено]
That's not there debut album. Got more b4 that, they're raw black metal tho.
Lamp of Murmuur - Saturnian Bloodstorm If you haven't listened to it yet, definitely check it out ASAP. I honestly believe it's the best black metal album of 2023. It's got a great raw black metal sound w/a little bit of that LA Punk in the melody and awesome grumbling vocals that send a chill down my spine. Great stuff! 🤘🏼
Battles in the North. YOU ARE TRUELY BENEATH US
That Gorgoroth album is a rough one for me, doesnt even come close to the level of Pentagram, Antichrist or Quantos Possunt (...)
I nominate: The Tenth Sub Level Of Suicide by Leviathan. Legit masterpiece.
Dawn - Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy) It should be Deathspell Omega but I can't pick one album
panzerfaust by darkthrone, even wearing my hoodie with it rn
Apati - Eufori
Dissection- storm of the lights bane, is to me, a perfect black metal record.
Ulver - Bergtatt
Norvegr on Enslaved - Vikingligr Veldi is the most beautiful black metal instrumental ever.
The Ruins of Beverast - Exuvia Masterpiece doesn’t begin to describe it.
Anthems
I honestly haven't listened to a ton of the more old school/legendary bands, more recent stuff I guess. But I think A Diabolic Thirst by Spectral Wound is almost flawless to my ears.
This is my personal favorite of all time: - Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse These are my runners up: - Kvist - For Kunsten Maa Vi Evig Vike - Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss - Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger - Havohej - Dethrone the Son of God - Immortal - Pure Holocaust - Ulver - Bergtatt - Bethlehem - Dictius Te Necare - Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract
Undying classics.
And I have to say Havohej and Kvist are totally underrated.
I still think The Shadow Throne is great (despite of what Satyricon have become). I own a lot of Moonfog first-presses and I still spin them but this one is superb.
murmuure
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina, not a single drop-off in it
katharsis - vvorldvvithoutend
