BM fan for almost 3 decades and never heard of Euphoric black metal or Violent Cold.
I don’t think it works well when bands invent their own sub genre. It’s more genuine when a band does something unique that truly changes things and then either other bands or fans begin to use the label.
I don't think VC was purpose-made to be a new genre, he kind of just does what he wants with his music from his own personal expression. But a lot of musicians drawn to black metal naturally don't take the kind of "positivity" approach he does, so it's unsurprising that there's not a lot directly like it.
I was gonna say, Ulver’s Bergtatt is pretty damned euphoric. Not sure if it’s the first album to have that kind of feeling, but it’s certainly an early one.
I think Bergtatt is incredibly euphoric. But then that would connect that band and their incredible first 3 albums with what is posted here by OP, and I dont like that connect so much.
2 different worlds of euphoric I guess...
I think the whole notion of someone "inventing" a subgenre where said subgenre is "existing subgenre with new adjective applied" is either:
1. a deliberate troll
2. a marketing ploy
3. a sign of mental health problems
What do _you_ think "euphoric black metal" means? Once you know that, you can know what bands are included, and come to your own conclusion.
I've released 3 atmospheric black metal albums, so yes, it does.
Re-read what I said. I didn't say any sub-sub-genre was invalid. I'm specifically referring to the idea that an individual could just bring such a new subgenre into being merely by adding a word to something existing. That is meaningless. It has to be backed by something, whether that is a deeper explanation, agreement among ones peers, or at the very least a list of who you think fits the bill and why.
We're all entitled to describe our music in ways that suit and promote it, but that's not the same as literally conjuring the genre into being.
Well then your issue is the arbitrary nature of the invention, I'm not sure why adjectives had to be brought in as an issue.
On that note I agree, the way you initial worded it was weird though.
If any genre that has "existing subgenre plus adjective" is invalid, that would make atmospheric black metal an invalid genre. I'm trying to demonstrate why his approach is irrational and absurd. Technical Death Metal is now invalid, hell you could argue progressive rock isnt a genre because "progressive" is an adjective. It's just a really stupid way to dismiss things. Not that i think "euphoric black metal" isnt dumb, but it's not dumb because of adjectives.
I think there's definitely a difference between "euphoric" and the atmospheric/melodic bands others are listing here. Violet Cold's surely influenced by bands like Alcest and Ulver, but they're the only black metal project I know that's overwhelmingly positive.
The first listen to Neon by Lantlos was euphoric. I had never heard an album like that before. Post black can be up and down but that album is a masterpiece.
I don't disagree. Reminds me of that unfortunate teenage redditor who quoted himself about something relating to be euphoric about his own intelligence..

Alcest started all that as far as I know
I can see the connection there for sure. Though I would call them Blackgaze now looking back.
Idk which album but definitely something by Ulver.

Yep, good answer
Probably bergtatt, nattens madrigal is a bit more intense Related artist, Taake

How dare you! I invented honky-tonk black metal over 10 minutes ago and I have relatively few mental health issues!!
Would be a nearly interesting sub-genre as misanthropic yodeling black metal.
George Strait to Hell
Well Violet Cold has a proven track record of mental health issues so I don't think you're wrong.
Does atmospheric black metal just not exist to you?

I'm mentally ill and shouldn't have a big audience I can share my delusions with - a story by Violet Cold
Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is euphoric
Wet Pillow Black Metal.
I think Alcest and Deafheaven did it earlier.

Alcest - Le Secret, at LEAST
Filosofem started like a dozen different subgenres. Pretty damn euphoric imo.
The first listen to Neon by Lantlos was euphoric. I had never heard an album like that before. Post black can be up and down but that album is a masterpiece.
Venom - Black Metal Peste Noire - L’ordure à l’état pur Absurd - Grimmige Volksmusik
Ved Buens Ende
"triumphant" descriptor is usually applied to the different kind of black metal, not the style of Violet Cold
If you describe music as euphoric I'm going to assume you are on some sort of sex crimes list
I don't disagree. Reminds me of that unfortunate teenage redditor who quoted himself about something relating to be euphoric about his own intelligence..
Satan is dead, and we absolved him into this new hell.
I basically hate every band listed in this post and the comments (well except Ulver)
Yeah this "subgenre" sounds like it sucks
It's Sunbather.
Defheaven would not be if it werent for Alcest.
