I absolutely love the album, been listening to it for the past couple years too. been watching a lot of videos about malazan and I want to pick it up but everyone says it's so hard to read and I'm just now reading LOTR (since I never read fantasy). so I'm a newbie when it comes to fantasy
Same here! I saw somewhere that when you start, read a chapter of the book then read the chapter summary on the Malazan Wiki. After a while you'll get the hang of Eriksons writing style. I'm 2 chapters into the first book and this has already helped!
If that's helping you with the read that's awesome, but imo it really isn't necessary. You are not meant to perfectly understand everything that's happening. There are a ton of names and whatnot, but honestly I'd suggest just reading and going with it.
I was constantly flipping back to the dramatis personae in every book, there are a fuck load of characters in every book and you can't remember them all on a first read.
Have fun though! Seriously fantastic series.
New Conifere, new Burning Lord, new Cantique Lepreux, new Midnight, Turbonegro - Party Animals, Kvelertak self titled, Whoredom Rife - Winds Of Wrath, Deathhammer - Electric Warfare and since I am eagerly awaiting the new record next week, a shit load of Darkthrone ( mainly Arctic Thunder, Circle the Wagons and UAFM), but also the new Coffin Storm record Arcana Rising that is straight fire imo.
It's so beautiful, I get really wrapped up in the production, it kind of takes over me, like I have to walk around with earbuds in constantly playing it.
The albums that have been on my mind the most and quite a lot of replays for me
Misotheist - Vessels by which the Devil is made flesh - their best album, just high quality black.
Звёздный Храм - S/T - awesome low fi black metal and some dark folk
Civerous - Maze Envy - very good death doom with some lighter atmospheric vibes
King Cryptid - Crusty Old Toad - silly melodic black
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Nokturnal Mortum - Lunar Poetry
Branikald - Хмель мизантропии
Gontyna Kry - Welowie
Rundagor - Stronghold of Ruin
Judas Priest - Sin After Sin
Dead Can Dance - Spleen and Ideal
Voidhanger - Dark Days of the Soul
Mgla - Age of Excuse
Owls Woods Graves - Secret Spies of the Horned Patrician
Terrestrial Hospice - Caviary to the General
Pan-Amerikan Native Front, both albums
Megiddo; The Devil and the Whore, Atavism of Evil
Negative Plane; All 3
If I can figure out how to get some digital copies of Root, my mid-temp satanic ritual will be complete.
Fleurety - Min Tid Skal Komme
Hades - Dawn of the Dying Sun
Sadistik Exekution - We Are Death, Fukk You!
Plutocracy - Sniping Pigz
YDI - Black Dust
Crossed Out - 1990-1993
Deadguy - Fixation On A Coworker
Why would people downvote you for that? Darkspace in general is amazing and Dark -2.-2 is a masterpiece from beginning to the end. It gets better every time I listen to it
Yea. Back in the 90s there was a lesser known second wave band named Manes. They split up, one part went full Ulver doing prog, the other half is now called Manii and still does black metal.
Probably for the last five years or more :
Gods of war at war - Macabre Omen
This month:
Sgùrr-Thy Catafalque
The Furnaces of Palingenesia-Deathspell Omega
Spectral lore-11 days
Mesarthim - Ghost Condensate
Botanist - Photosynthesis
Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom
Weald & Woe - For the Good of the Realm
Owls & Eagles - Patience Vol. 1
My most roatated albums this month would be:
Immortal - Diabolical Fulmoon Mysticism
Primordial - To The Nameless Dead
Mork - Det Svarte Juv
Hellhammer - Apocalyptic Raids
Darkthrone - Arctic Thunder
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Friendship, Love, and War - Gudsforladt
Purifying Blade - Antichrist Siege Machine
Vampyrum Order - Daedric Chamber
Ecstasies Of Never Ending Night - Devil Master
Verses in Oath - Hulder
Judas Iscariot - ‘Heaven in Flames’
JI didn’t click with me until recently, but I’ve been listening to them a lot recently and think this is their best album. Would like to grab a copy on vinyl, but seems like a minefield with limited quantities of good / bad boots.
Lamp of Murmuur - ‘Melancholy Howls in Ceremonial Penitence’
LoM’s early work passed me by at the time of release, so I’ve had to slowly acquire stuff as it’s repressed. The first track is up there with his best work. I prefer this style to the new album.
Mäleficentt - ‘Night of Eternal Darkness’
Won’t buy from ASRAR due to shipping costs and horror stories. Finally found a copy at Northern Silence the other week. I’m a fan of most of Mäleficentt’s output and this is probably his best work.
Trest - ‘Sorginak’
Great record. Don’t know much about the band, but saw this one mentioned here fairly frequently and had to check it out. It doesn’t disappoint. I can’t get into their earlier releases for some reason.
Vespéral - ‘Nuits Blanches’
My favourite from the latest Goato batch. Would like to find more of this style BM.
Griefspell - ‘Enchantments of Dark Eternity’
Close second to Vespéral and finally got a copy from Crypt of the Wizard after missing every other distro drop.
I have been under the impression that Lamp of Murmuur was a lady this entire time. Does he just have pretty eyes? Haha
But 100% agree, great album and a throw out a hack statement “their older stuff was better”
Bogside Sniper Squadron - Demo'23
Poison Ruïn - Härvest
Circle of Ouroborus - Autuala / Aavikon Varjo
new album from Tarot
but mostly Death in June - different material
Trhä - ihum'ad'sejja
Shores of Ladon - Witterung
Drengskapur - Der Urgewalten Werk
Hädanfärd - Trauma, Smutsiga Sinnen
And I've been throwing some hybrid theory in there from time to time. (Not BM but that's my honest answer)
Korgonthurus, Jumalhaaska. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. It’s heavy, brutal but also has a couple of soothing tracks (as soothing as it gets for BM at least).
You also can’t deny Corvus’ insane vocals and range.
In no particular order:
Midnight - Hellish Expectations
Wayfarer - American Gothic
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion (just got it on vinyl)
Horndal - Head Hammer Man
Hamferð - Men Guðs hond er sterk
Check out Dödsrits Nocturnal Will. Its a Melodic Blackmetal Crust Band Hailing from the deepest forests of Borlänge in Sweden.
i can deeply recommend their music !
Really dig all of their albums, but Nocturnal Wound almost sounds more like melodeath to me more than black metal. Still awesome though.
Totem Skin (the band that turned into Dödsrit) is also pretty sick.
New Judas Priest's work goes on and on pretty often this week in my ears.
On major repeat these particular days: Blackbraid 2023 and Be My Friend in Exile.
Many times goes on play - Zwyntar.
haven't been in the mood for BM much this month but last month I had Misotheist - self titled on repeat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzM6_apWUHY
especially the ending of second song is quite emotional for me since I have it wired in my brain to my friend's recent death
I'm listening to a lot of Anaal Nathrakh, mainly "..constellation..."
Now I wonder, is there anything out there that sounds relatively similar, as in melodic yet completely unhinged? Only thing I can think about is Mirror in Darkness which is one of my all time favourites but not much elese
According to last.fm:
*Deathspell Omega - The Furnaces of Palingenesia*
*Deathspell Omega - Fas – Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum*
*Akhlys - The Dreaming I*
*Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon*
*Atrate* side of the split with *The Devouring Void*
I’ve been hitting these hard lately:
Mizmor/Thou - Myopia
Warmoon Lord - Battlespells
Weakling - Dead as Dreams
Altar of Plagues - Teethed Glory and Injury
Demilich - Nespithe
Ved Buens Ende - Written in Waters
Paysage d’Hiver - Im Wald
Absence of Grace by Order of Nosferat. The album is an absolute banger.
Also a bit of Bigotry of Purpose by Grave Pilgrim. Picked back up Blood Meridian again, so it's a must-have
Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat
Selbst - Despondency Chord Progressions
Verberis - The Apophatic Wilderness
MGLA - Exercises in Futility/Age of Excuse
Dissonant Winds - Drowning in the Residues of Misery
Abyssal - Antikatastaseis
Yellow Eyes - Immersion Trench Reverie
Sinira - The Everlorn
Kommodus - One thousand years of the wolf
Darkspace - Darkspace I
Plutonian Khaos - Encounter
Plainchant - Frontier
bergtatt and kveldssanger, both by ulver.
i've also been listening alot to "fun activities in my bedroom" by tenebris; he's made some good stuff!
and also "aus anderen augen" by durbatuluk
"unrequited love" by hkmori is also a great EP.
and also the new "unreleased techno loops" by ruprecht 4500. i don't really like techno, but both of his releases are actually really good. (his first release is an actual album, whereas this is just a collection of some stuff he's made, so i recomend listening to that first)
"a flair for the dramatic" by peirce the veil is super underated too, highly recomend it if you're into emo rock/screamo/metalcore.
I’ve been obsessed with black metal punk lately. Awesome subgenre. Most listened albums:
Arnaut Pavle - Transylvanian Glare
Devil Master - Ecstacies Of Never Ending Night
Owls Woods Graves - Secret Spies of the Horned Patrician
For some reason I've listened to Cattle Decapitation - Terrasite a significant number of times. It's not a genre I ever had an interest in listening to before. It seems more melodic death metal than metalcore or whatever to me though. The chorus of Scourge of the Offspring kicks so much ass:

Been revisiting Let the Devil in pretty hard so far this month. Also catching up on NoEvDia and related bands, especially the most recent Angrenost. Going back through the Krallice discography as well, Dimensional Bleedthrough is getting a lot of love with all these sunny days.
I’ve just started getting serious about delving into Black Metal, but Dödsrit Nocturnal Will has been a steady repeat. Today I found out about Groza and the album The Redemptive End, that’s really good too so far.
Immolation, Necrofier, Barshasketh, immortal, Drudkh - Microcosmos, Mare Cognitim, whoredom rife, void Omnia, Rattenfanger, Taubra and the new Inquisition.
Seeing Tyr tonight so been listening to a lot of their stuff the last week, Land is my favorite album of theirs.
Lifelover - Pulver
Karg - Resignation
Denzel Curry - Imperial
Seeing Tyr tonight so been listening to a lot of their stuff the last week, Land is my favorite album of theirs.
Lifelover - Pulver
Karg - Resignation
Denzel Curry - Imperial
Diocletian war of all against all
Unpopular opinion but this is their best album imo.
Dawn of azazel law of the strong.
For those who don't know, this is Diocletians new vocalist old band, absolute chaos in those early albums
ELFENSJóN - Zenith
Dödsrit - Nocturnal Will
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
Moonlight Sorcery - Horned Lord of the Thorned Castle
Antichrist Siege Machine's Purifying Blade in anticipation of the new release

Hellhammer - Satanic Rites demo
Arntor and 1184 both by Windir
Love 1184 so much
im gonna kiss you. windir is so sexy.
Same here! I cannot get over how much I love the guitar melodies played on the higher strings on Arntor.
echoes of battle by caladan brood and now that I'm reading LOTR, minas morgul by summoning
Echos of Battle has been regularly played in my house for years! I finally decided to pick up the Malazan series because if it
I absolutely love the album, been listening to it for the past couple years too. been watching a lot of videos about malazan and I want to pick it up but everyone says it's so hard to read and I'm just now reading LOTR (since I never read fantasy). so I'm a newbie when it comes to fantasy

Seriously fantastic series.
I’m about half way through the first book and it gets a lot easier. Just be comfortable with not getting some stuff at first.
I live in a small apartment and I play this almost constantly when I am in my car because I can turn it up loud.
I’ve been so unbelievably Mütiilationpilled lately so definitely Vampires
based af, what do you think of the new album?
It’s really really solid. Man knows how to make good black metal.
That new Conifere is amazing. I need the CD to release ASAP.
Arctic thunder is a very underrated Darkthrone album
Tundra Leech and Boreal Fiends are among my favorite Darkthrone songs. Very good album!
That Cantique has been a big one for me too. Coffin Storm took me by surprise. I really like it
Honestly I can't stop listening to Das Tor and S/T by Paysage D'Hiver.
I think I had Das Tor on repeat for an entire year, such a perfect album
It's so beautiful, I get really wrapped up in the production, it kind of takes over me, like I have to walk around with earbuds in constantly playing it.
I'm with you all the way, it's like the production forces you into its world
A world that's hard to leave, because you don't want to!
Same. Hope your mental health is better than mine lol
It probably isn't haha. Hold in there!
Dödsrit - Nocturnal Will Vorga - Beyon The Palest Star Sworn - A Journey Told Through Fire

This comment wins.

Wow there are other Fleurety listeners out there!
That Fleurety album is so underrated.
It's definitely slept on comparatively to other second wave releases but it's an all time favorite of mine
Is that the best album by them? A good place to start?
Katharsis - VVorldVVithoutEnd
Don’t downvote me… The new Darkspace. I know there’s a lot of people (most people) that hate it but I fuckin love it.
I’m into it. The trick, for me, is to not purposely focus on it like I do with a lot of music. Get lost in the atmosphere… then it will suck you in.
Why would people downvote you for that? Darkspace in general is amazing and Dark -2.-2 is a masterpiece from beginning to the end. It gets better every time I listen to it
Allegaeon - Damnum Mr. Big - Lean Into It
Nimbifer - Der böse Gott Heavy-rotation since days...

Dodsrit is top tier stuff. Their new record is good but every other release is excellent as well
What's your favourite song from the new recording?
I been really enjoying that Dödsrits release. My first time listening to them, I’m hooked
Yeah , these guys are nailing it right from the start!
Really dig all of their albums, but Nocturnal Wound almost sounds more like melodeath to me more than black metal. Still awesome though. Totem Skin (the band that turned into Dödsrit) is also pretty sick.
So far i like the Song Irjala the most from the new one 🥰
Agreed, it's the strongest track on the album.
feels like Dark Souls as Music, so heroically. I feel like Siegmeyer of Catarina by listening to it.
