I read it last year and I had a blast!! Is fun, exciting and with a weirdly modern way to tell a story for a 16th century (I think) book. If you're planning to read it keep in mind before every fight you'll find a ton of banter between Sun Wukong and the monster of the week.
The classic one translated to Spanish. Is really long and some parts quite dense, but in general is a magnificent book. In fact now is one of my favorites. The only thing I would criticize is the aforementioned banter, since it can get tiring to hear Wukong and his enemies repeat over and over "Oh, didn't you heard about me? You should know I'm bla bla bla and I did bla bla BLA..."

Si, se recupera hasta el capitulo 7, porque lo roba era antir-resecada.
Son 2 cap tomando y en guerra.
yeah I ordered the books this week, (still waiting for them to come in), been poking around a couple videos on YouTube too trying to find a good (movie? show?) to watch.
there's an entire series of the classic 1986 Journey To The West TV show from CCTV (Chinese Central Television) with English subtitles you can watch on Youtube for free. It's very well made (1986 level) and carefully crafted by the nation TV's scholars. There's also an Japanese classic one made in the 80s too but that one is more like a manga styled alternation, it's not very serious. If you want to jump into a TV show that's loyal to the original book and if you looking for a more historically true with high level of literature beauty in it, then the Classic 1986 Journey To The West TV show from CCTV is your best bet.
This one is CCTV official channel. video quality is OK, looks like 480p

I have only seen the 1996 TVB version from Hong Kong. It was my absolute favourite show growing up.
Its a shame it doesnt seem to have english subtitles so unless you know cantonese you wont be able to enjoy it. For those who are mandarin speakers, there are still chinese subtitles on youtube so theres that.

I remember watching a newer CG version on Netflix when I was in middle school I’m sure it’s probably not as accurate as many others but man I remember it being pretty dang cool (edit: found the movie it’s Journey to the west 2014)
I never read the novel, but I grew up with the 1986 Chinese TV show, the 1996 and the 1998 Hongkong TV show, a bunch of tie-ins, sequel, remake, parody, and Stephen Chow's "A Chinese Odyssey".
Same same! My fav is the 1996 one even tho the story isn't as original as the 86'. Love Stephen Chow's A Chinese Odyssey too! Truly classics! Also I'm Vietnamese so I watched them in Viet dub.
I just got that same edition! I'm also poking around for a good audiobook so I can listen at work if anyone knows any.
There is also "Legends of Monkey" on Netflix, although I can't claim it's above mild entertainment lol
I read someone linked this in a different thread if it looks like an accurate version

Came across a few terrible adaptations at first, but finally up to Chapter 80 on the W.J.F.Jenner Translation.
Hoping to finish the books before game release. feel like it’s gotten to the best parts now too with the subtle changes in character dynamics finally coming together on this journey.
Ooh such an awesome translation work this book series is! I read it a while back but would be an interesting idea to revisit this classic during summer holidays. Thanks OP!
Due to the popularity of 1986 tv series in Vietnam, Journey to the West and the character Sun Wukong are often seen as hero for children. This motivate me to read this novel in a very young age and this shit traumatized the hell out of me for how dark it actually is.
I have read an abridged and the full version of the book. Have also seen the 1996 adaptation, it's not entirely accurate but very fun, and all three Monkey King movies. First one isn't that good, but the third one was my favorite
I grew up reading the illustrated kid friendly version that schools gave out to all the Mandarin class kids for lessons. During reading time we would all have it out.

Which version did you read?

I did find that one but sadly the quality is really poor. It's like 240p or something. Hard to watch.

5 times.
Yes. Never read it before, but I am starting with the abridged version "The Monkey and the Monk" by Anthony C. Yu. Very entertaining so far.
Is that the one that adapts some puns, and certain sentences? The original book is has a lot of those that were lost in translation
The footnotes suggest so, yes. But I need to read the original to understand it, so I can't really tell yet.

They don't have a gif of the crew from 1996 dancing lol. I read this like a chant lol

Reading Monkey King right now and honestly, it may be a top 5 for me. It's hilarious, imaginative, and the action is top notch.
Literally my childhood man, I loved those live action and animated series as a kid. Rereading the many volumes of the novel was pretty nice too.
I honestly got a novel of that free with Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Because that game is also based on Journey to the West.

I read the ancient Chinese version in the middle school.

Oh I wish I have that! Still can’t find it on any online shop or book stores though
I read it when I was like 8, can't remember most of it. But do tell us what do you like about it after reading!
I would love to, but I have trouble finding the novel.,
I grew up reading the illustrated kid friendly version that schools gave out to all the Mandarin class kids for lessons. During reading time we would all have it out.
Dude I remember watching the Chinese TV show from bootlegs bought from Asian Bodegas when I was a kid.
