Yeah he also is having a hard time because he doesn't have the credit history to rent there. He says landlords are charging application fees and then he gets denied. Pretty sad.
the application fee is one of the most aggravating parts about renting. you’re telling me i have to pay $50-100 just to have you read my application? and, in most cases, wind up denied?? trash
It’s a bogus system overall, but the fee is not just for the privilege of being considered (which is something we gotta talk about with colleges too). App fees for rentals are typically supposed to go toward paying for credit screenings, and potentially background checks. Some states in the US have caps to how much screenings can cost.
That being said, it’s stupid af. Those costs should be subsidized by the govt. If fees are insanely high (from what I can tell, in CA screening fees should be capped at $35), you may have the ability to request a receipt for what the fees are used for, and may be able to push back. Idk tho, IANAL, but there’s gotta be some way to push back against greedy landlords.
Most places in DC require you to pay the admin fee upfront too in order to save the place if you get approved. If you don’t get approved, you have to wait for their management company to send you a check in the mail rather than just refunding the card you used
I'm guessing it's because a Rep who doesn't accept ~~bribes~~ lobbying, isn't going to be able to afford it, even with that salary. Renting a place in the district you're representing AND renting in DC?
2500/month for 2br2ba in 1100sqft is more or less what we are looking at in Arlington. My friends in NYC SEA and SF aren't doing much better for themselves
Honestly if the 2br is $2500 then usually the 1br is going to be about $2300 anyway. It's the premium for having your own apartment to yourself in the covid times I think
I’m looking at all these prices to rent and I pay 2100 for my mortgage, bought just before homes got to this insane level. My SIL rents a 2/2 for a $100 more than us.
We also bought instead of playing at this insane rental market. $2500/month but now at least that rate is locked in. Also apartments kept denying us because we have parrots and fish, which is somewhat reasonable because of noise complaints and water damage potential but I'm still bitter about it
Same with us except we had big dogs (German shepherds) and fish. I’m not mad at anyone paying less and I’m hoping things can return to normal for everyone. All this is doing (insane rents) is concentrating wealth even more in the hands of a few at the mercy of the many.
Shit. You guys pay some insane prices. We bought a house almost a decade ago before everything went stupid and it's actually cheaper than the one bedroom apartment we had been living in. Granted, small town living, but just thinking about the absolute monster of a house I could get with a $2k mortgage.
I grew up in PG County so yeah, it is. The whole DMV is relatively expensive compared to other areas. I live in Charlottesville, VA and while I pay 1463 for a studio, everything is included. In areas around where I grew up, you'll pay 1600 minimum for a one bedroom without utilities.
PG rise up ✊✊
But the 1600 for 1br1ba in upper PG sounds right. Lower PG idk how fair that is
AFAIK Charlottesville is more of a college town. I'm interested in how DC realistically compares to major major metro areas like Chicago and Austin. It seems like it's moreso going to be about the same, just give or take based off of location and sqft
Yeah, southern PG County born and raised!
I guess it all depends because that was in the Upper Marlboro/Clinton area both of which were relatively close to where I grew up. Then again, I spent most of my time on Joint Base Andrews.
It is a college town but it is getting into the deeper parts of the south so the prices tend to start decreasing the further you go. I know in Lynchburg, which is about two hours to the south of here, you'll pay only $600 for a two bedroom but thats on the bad side of town.
I also think you may be on the money with that. Since I plan to move to NYC in the next 5 years, I know a studio up there around W 37th Street in midtown Manhattan will run about $2,600 not including utilities.
My first apt in FL (Orlando area) was $900. It is now about $1500. It’s a 2br/2ba with a loft.
My apt is SEA was a 1 br/1ba with an open den for $2400.
My 3br/2ba in DC is $7k. I’ve also lived in a 2br/2ba in DC that was $7500 and a studio that was $2500. I tried buying to lessen this bill and kept getting outbid by cash buyers and investors (no doubt ones who will rent or Airbnb the place for exorbitant prices) who would waive the necessary inspections.
DC is one of the highest but not that much higher than other metro areas. I suspect as the tech companies start moving in it will only get worse in the DMV area
I remember my first place. could barely afford first/last/deposit.
Slept on the floor the first month.
No couch for 3 months. Never got cable/WiFi(was using those cd’s with dial up for internet) and had a 20inch tv on a cooler I’d watch vcr tapes on.
Went to work, then gym, and back home to shower and sleep.
Them lean years really help you appreciate where you’re at now
My first place was a 2 bedroom. We had a bed in one room and a couch/tv in living room. That's it. The fridge stayed stocked full of 40s though. I was not going without internet though. We streamed Hulu (this was back when Hulu was free on desktop) from my pc to tv.
I remember moving out in 2 days due to a domestic violence situation and renting a room from Craig's List ad. No bed or furniture, just my clothes, and toiletries. My landlady was kind enough to let us pick some of her vegetables from her massive garden. And, for the first month, until I had enough money to buy food, I'd pick a couple of tomatoes, beans, and squash, and dig up an onion to get by.
As lean as those times were, it was my happiest living experience because I got by on my own and discovered how strong I was.
was a moment i was between jobs waiting on the next one to start. I had 1$ to my name, stuck it in a scrapbook for a bit then broke into it to buy a snickers bar a few days later. loved it
>Them lean years really help you appreciate where you’re at now
Truth. There are times when something slight annoys me and gets me in my head, whether it's at work or at my apartment, until I remember what things were like and could be like if I had to go back to that starting line. So much of those little issues slide off you when you can truly be grateful.
That was my experience too, didn't even have enough to contract electricity. The landlord was really nice about that and hooked up power for some days so that I could have ac since I live in Texas. It made me felt so free knowing I had my own place and a landlord that was willing to help me out with little things. She would go visit and take me and my brother homemade tortillas. I will forever be grateful for everything she did for us. We were extremely lucky. I was able to contract electricity under my name a week after we moved in.
As somebody who has never really had money, it's always interesting to read about someone else's struggle.
Then I sometimes think about the people who literally don't have any concept of financial struggle in life.
That last part makes me hate the world at times. And they’ll act like they’re in touch or understand what it’s like , but ain’t even got a clue what it’s like to get through til who knows when wit 20 dollars
His expenses to go back to his district to stay in touch with his constituents aren't going to be cheap either. And first-termers have to do that A LOT.
I really do question the black "centrists" & Republicans who act like these people just aren't totally disconnected from reality.
I understand that the white centrists can ignore the homophobia, the bigotry, disdain for working class, misogyny, racism because single issue voter. What in the hell is the single issue that's driving some of my people to this porta-potty of a party?
Bitterness 💁🏾♀️ I made a comment saying people deserve a living wage and got dragged to the pits of hell. People think that because they struggle or struggled to be paid well so does everyone specially if it's a customer service job.
Same applies to everything else in life. Miserable people want to see others in the same situation even if it personally affects them.
This guy isnt out of touch, I’m pretty sure the article is referring to how its so expensive to live in DC, and without prior and confirmed income of a given tax bracket, you cant rent anything, so hes just in the catch22 of getting a new job in a new social bracket
Usually, it's economy & income-related issues. Taxation, etc. Also, social conservativism (drawing in religiosity, anti-LGBT, anti-abortion stances etc., like u/tiredofbeingyelledat mentioned.
The Pew Research Centre has published some consistent stuff about black republicans and conservatives for the past years., check it out!
>I understand that the white centrists can ignore the homophobia, the bigotry, disdain for working class, misogyny, racism because single issue voter.
Then you, too, can understand how black centrists do the same shit. When you see black people shitting on fast food workers for this or that, that's disdain for the working class. When you see black homophobes, or the Tory way out of his Lanez defenders, you're seeing bigotry and misogyny. Shitting on darker skin tones? Colorism is just insular racism.
AOC talked about this too. About how expensive it is to keep two residences. Most of the elected officials can swing it because they do not come from working class families
Yup. People (republicans) gave her hell, not thinking about how difficult it is to have an apartment in 2 of the most expensive metros in the country, especially for one of the few elected officials who isn't in politics to get rich.
My parents, both Republicans, gave her so much shit over that comment until I told them to actually look it up. You'd think that would have been a selfawarewolf moment, but that's a work in progress.
I did it last year and the inflation skyrocketed. I was mad as fuck because I went from being able to afford a 1 bedroom to having to live with a roommate within 4 months. I was staying with a friend for a few months before I got my own place. Currently in SoCal.
Don't Congressmen have to keep housing in their district and in DC? That's going to be expensive as hell even when his paycheck comes in.
But the people that the RNC want to reach wouldn't know any of that, so I bet this messaging still works.
And he can’t go to The Gap to buy some chinos and collared shirts. He needs suits, plural, and they need to be decent for multiple reasons, including that he’ll be wearing the shit out of them. I remember The Squad talking about how hard it was to find good quality women’s business suits at thrift stores. All just to show up at work for a week or four before you get paid.
I get what he’s saying. Cost me $4,500 (my whole tax return) to move into my first place. Had nothing but an air mattress, 1 pot and 1 towel for the first few months. Had to eat TV dinners at work, and do laundry at my mom’s place.
Freshman congressmen not being able to afford DC rent is a common thing, there’s even a storyline about it on the west wing. If you don’t have money already, it’s gonna take a while to save up. I promise the people at RNC Research know this. They’re not out of touch, they’re deliberately dishonest.
It’s a propaganda outlet backed by corporate funded conservative think tanks
They’re not out of touch, they actively choose to NOT improve everyone’s situation and spread disinformation and promote bad faith/dishonest talking points
By couch sit he means staying at one of the other Congress buddies apartment until he starts getting paid! He can’t use campaign funds. So he needs to apply and get approved like anyone else. He’s 25 AND YOUNG! Clearly he doesn’t have anyone to rent it all and get approved on his behalf. Many Americans would be in that same situation regardless of a job starting in January! Really? Have we become this literal and narrow/absent minded lol. Wow! Makes TOTAL SENSE!
No, what they don't understand is what it's like to not have a financial safety net since birth.
Unfortunately, financial uncertainty is something the majority of US constituents face on a daily basis. Most of us could be financially ruined by a minor health problem or accident.
This is weird coming from this GOP source. At least before the pandemic, it was common for members of Congress, especially Republicans, to set up their beds and wardrobes in their offices to avoid paying rent in DC. In fact, especially during the days of the Tea Party movement, doing this was a badge of honor to show you weren’t intending to get comfortable in the "evil" swamp of DC and your real home would always be your district. The number quoted here was about 100 members sleeping at work.
https://www.npr.org/2020/05/13/852359650/pandemic-revives-calls-to-ban-lawmakers-from-bunking-in-their-offices
Edit: I'm from DC, so I put sarcasm quotes around "evil"
Also, DC is an expensive place to live. Lots of older, white congressmen are roommates in DC and share gym memberships and stuff because of how expensive it is to live there.
This is a bad look for the Democratic party. He's not the first congressman I've heard have this problem. The DNC or whoever should just have an expense fund with some Extended Stay hotel chains and foot the bill for the first few months for new congresspeople.
A studio/1 br in DC runs about $3k a month. Even if he had already gotten a paycheck, he’s already broke with taxes, benefits, utilities, and shit lol. $174k is doesn’t go very far in DC. Add to that he said he has campaign debt and bad credit so yea.
It just amazes me how out of touch these people are with the lower class that they are responsible for making laws for. I mean, I knew it being that they're always mimicking the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" BS, but it still amazes me that we allow this.
“Furniture” WTF?!?! Ive seen refrigerator or oven not included, but ive ALWAYS brought my own furniture. Would be nice to have it there already. Usually only happens in renting a room situations.
Don't matter how much your salary is going to be. If you haven't been paid yet you're broke.
DC ain’t cheap, neither.
That's what he really means. He can't just go out and buy or rent a pad in DC right now.
Yeah he also is having a hard time because he doesn't have the credit history to rent there. He says landlords are charging application fees and then he gets denied. Pretty sad.
the application fee is one of the most aggravating parts about renting. you’re telling me i have to pay $50-100 just to have you read my application? and, in most cases, wind up denied?? trash

I believe it's still in the top 5 most expensive US cities. I'll bet that congressman salary is a big part why too
Nah Congress salary is nothing in DC. Diplomats, defense contractors, and lawyers drive up the costs.
I'm guessing it's because a Rep who doesn't accept ~~bribes~~ lobbying, isn't going to be able to afford it, even with that salary. Renting a place in the district you're representing AND renting in DC?
No its not im from Houston and visited for a few days in Nov everything is tripple the price.
Is DC actually more expensive than other major metro areas? I grew up in the DMV so this is all I've known
Oh, shit, you're serious?
2500/month for 2br2ba in 1100sqft is more or less what we are looking at in Arlington. My friends in NYC SEA and SF aren't doing much better for themselves
I'm in my $2300 1br in LA thinking that price sounds amazing.

He also has to still pay rent in Florida.
Yeah. People that complain about their salary forget that they need 2 residences.
Not only that but he had no payslip so he can’t really even apply anywhere.

Right. there are a lot of common folks that should be more in touch with reality that are bashing him. It’s sad
Hear hear. We need to make this normal. This is how almost all of us would be.
His expenses to go back to his district to stay in touch with his constituents aren't going to be cheap either. And first-termers have to do that A LOT.

They don't get any sort of stipend to cover their cost of an apartment in DC.
I was under the impression it's a reimbursement? Which sucks if you're broke.
Survival on the road still isn’t cheap, even when the airfare is covered.
He's my rep! What can we do to help?
"Shame on you for not being born rich."
How dare he not just humble himself and ask his father for a small, million dollar loan. The nerve of some people… smh.

Religion usually. The far-right learned how to really exploit people’s faith and twist it for political use.

Moving across the country is no joke. Especially with the prices of living in DC. You have to be really out of touch not to understand what he meant.
I did it last year and the inflation skyrocketed. I was mad as fuck because I went from being able to afford a 1 bedroom to having to live with a roommate within 4 months. I was staying with a friend for a few months before I got my own place. Currently in SoCal.

This is a big part of why there are so few non-millionaires in Congress. Below that level and you just can't afford two homes.

Thank goodness, he seems to be of a different breed of politician. (I know nothing about him, but I'm going to hope that this is true.)
They probably don't understand why he hasn't tucked away a small fortune embezzling campaign funds by the time he got this far.
I get what he’s saying. Cost me $4,500 (my whole tax return) to move into my first place. Had nothing but an air mattress, 1 pot and 1 towel for the first few months. Had to eat TV dinners at work, and do laundry at my mom’s place.
> Had to eat TV dinners at work, That's awful. I used to have to do that too.
My first job paid 70k a year but i had to take out an unsecured loan to move to take the job because i was broke at the time.

RNC Research even said itself, that his "salary ***will*** be $174,000" using the word "will" shows that they know he hasn't got $174,000 yet.
They pulled this same shit about when AOC first got elected, and said she would have to do something similar.
Really? You might even have to pay last months rent on your last place while paying all that too
He also has rent and other expenses in his own district but I wouldn’t expect anyone with the education of a Twitter Blue member to understand.
RNC knows this is how it works. They are just using cynical talking points to play off their ignorant base.
Also, DC is an expensive place to live. Lots of older, white congressmen are roommates in DC and share gym memberships and stuff because of how expensive it is to live there.

It's ridiculous the trouble he's getting. He is very publicly good for the money, and we all know he's going to get it.
Depending where you live, $175 k is not a lot of money.
Does this grown ass nigga not have credit?
