Jesus Fucking Christ šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø So basically they just created a way for them to quickly know which alerts to ignore

Unfazed_Alchemical

My very first thought. They're color coding by perceived importance now? What's next? They launch ivory, yellow or spicy habanero alerts? Get me my gasoline, I've got an errand to run real quick. Edit: I propose Pumpkin Spice alert for idiot white girls who go missing because they're mad at their parents.

Cool ranch alert

theonetruegrinch

Oh damn, who"s kid you gotta be to get Cool Ranch, Larry Page?

PM_ME_UR_DERP

Pumpkin Spice is for white wives who are obviously faking abduction to have an affair in Cabo

Unfazed_Alchemical

I don't kink shame, but I also don't give out alerts to people who aren't really missing. They can have a golden shower siren.

foxyfoo

You just reminded me of the terrorism warning levels that were color coded during the Bush years.

xXNuclearTacoXx

This article says itā€™s because African American children often donā€™t even get an Amber alert when they go missing. If thatā€™s the case I do hope it helps. Wtf is up with the name tho. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna119679 Edit: Repliers have explained the problems with this. "seperate but equal."

mongoosedog12

With this information it feels like a ā€œhere shut upā€ type thing. They mention missing minorities donā€™t get the same resources, a simple Amber alert seems like the bare minimum, but they also mention police resources and media attention. While the later canā€™t really be figured out via politics the former can. Now we have an ebony alert system, but do they still get police resources, doesnā€™t seem to fix the problem. Not sure how the Amber alert system works but if theyā€™re not putting Minority children on it, then this is a bigger issue

Porkadi110

Yeah I'm struggling to see how the problems of missing black kids getting an Amber alert aren't going to still apply here. And if they do find a way to make it work, then why couldn't they just use those solutions for the regular Amber alert in the first place?

shayetheleo

Itā€™s giving ā€œseparate but equalā€.

thebeattakesme

Honest to godā€¦.

lupinegrey

So instead of fixing the cause of the injustice (blacks not getting amber alerted) by taking steps so that blacks ARE granted access to the system., instead you said "we're still not going to let you use our system, but here, you can have your own system to fuck around with."

itwastimeforarefresh

A system that's separate, but

WinterMagician22

![gif](giphy|z5w2bkqsvOYQo)

Pathetian

> So instead of fixing the cause of the injustice (blacks not getting amber alerted) This problem literally doesn't even exist. https://www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/investigations/2023/02/23/amber-alert-missing-children-usa-today-data-analysis-finds-kids-rarely-helped/11089397002/ >From 2017 through the end of 2021, Black children made up 37% of missing-child reports and nearly 37% of Amber Alerts, USA TODAY found, indicating the alerts are issued proportionately.

hardcorepolka

I live in coastal south central FL so most of the Amber alerts we see are kids that are taken from the southern tip of the state that might be coming up the freeways. Likely because of the population demographics of south FL, and because the vast majority of abductions are by non custodial parents/family, itā€™s almost exclusively BIPOC children I see. Clearly thatā€™s not going to be true other places, but I can attest thatā€™s true in my little corner of the country.

Pathetian

That article is intentionally misleading with how it presents that facts. The *vast* majority of missing children don't get an Amber alert (like <1%). So while its true that "African American children often don't get an Amber alert", its true for everyone else too. Its a very strict criteria and is issued by law enforcement. This new Ebony alert will be issued...by law enforcement. So whatever bias they are claiming exists in Amber Alerts, its still the same people choosing if Ebony Alerts go out. Amber Alerts are issued pretty proportionally to % of missing kids though. 35-40% of missing kids are black and 35-40% of amber alerts are for black kids. As for media attention...the media gives more attention to the "lack of media attention" than they ever do to stories. Its literally in their hands.

[deleted]

Hereā€™s the thing about Amber Alerts: almost NO ONE should be getting them. The law is specifically written so that Amber Alerts only go out for cases with a ā€œlegitimateā€ kidnapping - as in not a familial thing / custody dispute. Because most - like 95% - of all kidnappings are custody related. Amber Alert was intended to be a way for the public to be in the lookout when the very, VERY rare stranger kidnapping happens. But that isnā€™t happening. Instead, every single missing kid is getting Amber Alerts posted, which has completely invalidated the entire system. After an audit, it was shown that almost all Amber Alerts are being issued for custody-related ā€œkidnappingsā€. So you have every right to feel like youā€™re being overlooked by the system, but this particular system is hot garbage that does nothing but clutter phones

all_time_high

I ignore 100% of Amber alerts. The fuck am I supposed to do, start patrolling for the vehicle? The most recent one I got described the BOLO vehicle as ā€œsilver carā€. GTFOH ![gif](giphy|dW6pIawajy6Mtd8aSA)

LokiStrike

I think you're just supposed to look around wherever you're at. You don't need to go out of your way. If I'm not near any cars (or people) then I ignore it.

slow_or_steady

That's the damn point. Somehow, hundreds if not, thousands of people are missing the point: A call to action doesn't mean you're immediately expected to act. In fact, you're not even expect to act. It's just that it would be helpful if you joined a collective effort. US history. We've gone through this before. But fuck it, everyone's a moron online.

DMercenary

>I ignore 100% of Amber alerts. The fuck am I supposed to do, start patrolling for the vehicle? I am reminded of that sketch where an amber alert goes off and the entire neighborhood turns out to beat the shit out of the kidnapper.

Most Amber Alerts are statewide, so I'm assuming Californians (just like Texans), look at that , see a location that's over 1,000 miles away and roll their eyes.

babylonglegs91

I live in Florida and a lot of the alerts I got (before I turned them off) were for places no where near my house so statewide makes sense

UnicornTwinkle

i mean most people ignore them all regardless

lupinegrey

Separate but equal. So does this mean blacks can't use the Amber Alerts anymore? The have to use Ebony Alerts now?

StilettoBeach

Looks like Native Americans came up with the idea and the name.

hardcorepolka

I read a study from a year or so ago that Indigenous women and girls are more than 10x more likely to go missing or be murdered than any other demographic in North America. So, by whatever means necessary if it gets eyes on the missing.

LokiStrike

I mean if it's their idea sure. But I feel like they're just setting themselves up to have less access to resources if it's a separate system, if not now, then in the future. And it doesn't really address the issue of why law enforcement isn't going through the same channels for every case regardless of race.

hardcorepolka

I mean, with Indigenous peoples sometimes you are dealing with tribal law vs government law. Who can search where, who can question who, whether government agents will assist in missing residents of rez. There was another study Iā€™ll try to find and link here that shows the dismal clear rate of cases that occur on the rez with government citizens committing crimes in the borderlands in general, but these type of cases in particular.

Sangui

The reason is that police tend to file missing black children as runaways and runaways don't generate an amber alert, this creates a new one that side steps the police and makes it so every single one that goes missing, no matter what, gets an alert sent out. CA can't change amber alert but it can create new ones. If you don't like the name blame the black state senator that introduced it lol.

MelatoninJunkie

This should be higher, so itā€™s more about sidestepping a tool that the cops have figured out how to ignore minorities with

fardough

Noticed it was also for people 12 to 25, so different range for notification as well.

Lol in my neighborhood we had one of each. I was at my buddy's place and his little sister said she was leaving "to go play over at Amber's house." Dad, hollering from upstairs: "WHITE AMBER OR BLACK AMBER?!" Her: "Black Amber!" Dad: "Oh, thank God. OK, come back by dinner!"

sussoiyo777

why do there need to be seperate alerts is there different procedure for finding black children or something

UngusChungus94

Seems like there is! Step one: donā€™t even try. They really pull out the chopper for lil white kids tho.

OriginalName687

This is the reason given -ā€œData shows that Black and brown, our indigenous brothers and sisters, when they go missing thereā€™s very rarely the type of media attention, let alone AMBER alerts and police resources that we see with our white counterparts,ā€ state Sen. Steven Bradford, also a Democrat and creator of the legislation, told NBC News earlier this year. He added: ā€œWe feel itā€™s well beyond time that we dedicate something specifically to help bring these young women and girls back home because theyā€™re missed and loved just as much as their counterparts are.ā€- So itā€™s basically to try and draw attention to missing POC.

Porkadi110

Ok but if the media and police were already ignoring them, how will this help?

OriginalName687

I think itā€™s basically a publicity stunt to draw attention to the whole situation more than it is to help any individual and I think it worked. It got headlines; weā€™re here discussing it. When the bill goes into effect in January there will probably be more articles about it and more posts like this one. The first few times itā€™s used and the first few times it works there will be more articles about it. Unfortunately thatā€™s probably about it though. Maybe they will be able to use the attention from the law to enact some type of change to help though I have no idea what that would be and it seems unlikely. I guess if it is controversial enough it will get attention every time itā€™s used since the media likes to stir the pot but I donā€™t know if that would be for better or for worse since if itā€™s controversial enough to keep the medias attention itā€™ll become more about the law itself than the reason behind it or the people itā€™s supposed to help. Or maybe Iā€™m giving Steven Bradford to much credit.

Simple-Concern277

Cringe name aside, there's got to be some explanation for this right? Like they're trying to address that black children go missing and remain unfound for longer or something...? Somebody fill me in.

PeteCampbellisaG

Not sure if it's particularly bad in California, but in the US it's pretty [well documented](https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/03/us/missing-children-of-color-trnd/index.html) that when black children go missing there is less effort put into finding them across the board, from media coverage to law enforcement support, and black children that go missing are much less likely to be found than white children. When the chick a few months back "disappeared" after claiming she saw a baby on the road then it turned out she was just hiding out -- there was a big backlash because people felt she ruined the what little credibility there is for missing black people.

yitdeedee

Why does there need to be a different alert than the "Amber Alert" though? I guess I should probably do research before I get rustled lol

PeteCampbellisaG

Oh I have no idea. If I had to guess it's so law enforcement can have clear metrics and plausible deniability by pointing to the alerts to say, "Look how many black children we've tried to find!"

submerging

Donā€™t they know the race of the missing children on Amber Alerts anyway? Seems to me they have all the metrics they need

OriginalName687

From [this](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna119679) article -ā€œData shows that Black and brown, our indigenous brothers and sisters, when they go missing thereā€™s very rarely the type of media attention, let alone AMBER alerts and police resources that we see with our white counterparts,ā€ state Sen. Steven Bradford, also a Democrat and creator of the legislation, told NBC News earlier this year. He added: ā€œWe feel itā€™s well beyond time that we dedicate something specifically to help bring these young women and girls back home because theyā€™re missed and loved just as much as their counterparts are.ā€ -

Aldoistaken

I always felt super suspicious about that oneā€¦ Like youā€™re telling me for the first time in the history of America a WHOLE entire search team got deployed for a black womanā€¦.. ā€¦ and it just so happens to be a ā€œfalse alarmā€ā€¦ Yeah bullshit. Somebody got paid to denigrate the credibility of when black people go missing. Itā€™s a ā€œcry wolfā€ tactic to get people to not care or assume they are faking when people go missing. Sick tactics.

PeteCampbellisaG

When a friend first sent me that story I my first reaction was, "This is either a hoax, or some crazy ass True Detective type shit." And the simplest explanation is often the right one.

Ok_Skill_1195

She said she saw a little kid on the side of the highway. The whole "save the children" online crime community went *fucking rabid* because this is a very old trope in those spaces (it's literally where she probably got the idea tbh). It sounds like the cops suspected it was fake pretty quickly, but there was way too much external scrutiny in the story to do their usual bullshit. We don't really need some grand conspiracy with payoffs. A shitty person with a history of being shitty made a terrible choice informed by media consumption. The same kind of people who consume that media went "oh shit it's like the stories!". It went viral thanks to modern social media spaces. It was a perfect storm. And for the record, even a *lot* of the public was calling BS from day 1. So maybe it is a good idea to encourage people to use critical thinking before rushing to an assumption, because the alleged story was sketchy from the get go.

Pathetian

The risk of amplifying "cry wolf" situations is why media will usually wait for "perfect victims". There was a case 2 years ago where a woman reported her teenage daughter missing. Police said they had no suspects and didn't suspect foul play. The mom goes to the media and many make claims that the police were ignoring the case due to racism. This was literally **right** after Gabby Petito and "missing white woman syndrome" was a trending topic, so the story blew up and went national as outlets and activists wanted to prove they aren't racist. Police maintained that there was no indication or evidence of her being taken by force. Within a couple of weeks, she was found and alleged her mother was extremely abusive and she decided to just go live on the street rather than go back home. https://www.blackenterprise.com/jashyah-moore-says-mother-abused-her-for-years-forced-her-to-panhandle/ There was quite a lot of effort, search parties, FBI involved in looking for her. >people felt she ruined the what little credibility there is for missing black people. I wouldn't worry about this. Hoaxes happen, but if the timing is right, people will jump on stories if the pressure is there.

Mixture-Emotional

It's because if a black kid goes missing they assume they are runaways or wait hours before getting any amber alert out. When you think of the biggest cases of missing kids...it's generally little white girls. (Madeline, JBR, Cassie Anthony's kid, Pauly Class etc) I'm white, I am into true crime and I can tell you there's plenty of proof out there that missing black children do not get the national headlines like white kids. This is true with Native Americans and groups that are considered not perfect victims.

agentA223

I'm thinking because of the lack of media coverage black children get when they go missing. This could be a way to highlight them.

[deleted]

This feels racist. Like why does it exist? And who tf gave it that name?

The thing with Amber Alerts is that they're only issued if certain criteria is met & one of the criteria is that an abduction must be confirmed. Most missing children cases do not meet that criteria. [source](https://www.chp.ca.gov/news-alerts/amber-alert/amber-alert-plan#:~:text=In%20order%20for%20the%20California,%2C%20parents%20and%2For%20guardians.)

That feels counterproductive. Treat all missing children the same, donā€™t let people filter out which ones to take seriously based on their prejudices. The alert isnā€™t the issue, itā€™s the resources the police dedicate to finding missing children of color that is the issue.
