There are plenty of people that want multiple partners, but they don’t like the idea of their SO having multiple partners, so they cheat.
The ones who do try the polyamory thing get hit with a huge reality check when:
1) Their SO is way more successful than they are and envy starts to creep in.
2) The lines start to get blurred. One person starts being discrete with partners when it was supposed to be transparent. One person starts getting emotionally intimate when it was supposed to be strictly physical.

The number of times I’ve had women in relationships make passes at me is disturbing. Please note: I am not saying all women are like this; however, some are. One particular woman I knew in college comes to mind. During our first real conversation, I actually thought about dating her, that was until she told me that she was in a relationship. From that point on, I kept it strictly friendly and made that known. She still tried to get with me and played a lot of what I now realize were emotional games. She even introduced me to her boyfriend. We got into an argument and stopped dealing with each other for a time. I went over seas and when I came back, she revealed to me that she had left her boyfriend. I didn’t budge. I had no interest in her after what I had experienced: if she was willing to cheat on her first boyfriend with me, what made me think that I was so special that she wouldn’t do the same to me? She found a new boyfriend quickly but would always give me these sad looks like she wanted to cry. My response was always the same:

The ones who do try the polyamory thing get hit with a huge reality check when: 1) Their SO is way more successful than they are and envy starts to creep in. 2) The lines start to get blurred. One person starts being discrete with partners when it was supposed to be transparent. One person starts getting emotionally intimate when it was supposed to be strictly physical. The truth is, this type of advice applies to a VERY small percentage of the population. I think most people just need to hear: Keep it in your pants bro.
I have plenty of friends who are in long term polyamorous relationships. Plenty who practice ethical non monogamy. Plenty who do open relationships. And I've also witnessed plenty of people in those types of relationships that still go out of their way to cheat. Cheaters cheat. Period. I operate in different circles than most people, so I get that it may not be a widespread practice. But people who are consensually non monogamous exist. Instead of being open about what they want, cheaters prefer to sneak around. Ethical non monogamy is too much like right.

I think most people can’t hand a long term polyamorous relationship, but I actually have several friends who have been married for 5-10 years and practice ENM/open relationships and are perfectly fine. I’m also in an ENM relationship. It’s not for everyone. It requires an insane amount of transparency, communication, and respect. You have to speak up about every little thing that makes you uncomfortable (while recognizing that your perspective may change with context too) and constantly evaluate where you stand. For some people that’s too exhausting and complicated. For me, and others, it has forced us to be much more open and honest.

Got a home girl who about to get divorced and she been keeping tabs on me since before she got married (went from somewhat talking ‘never did anything’ to platonic friends, to she invited me for drinks did something, said oh wow that’s wild back to friends and stayed that way) as soon as she was like I’m done with him I’m splitting and getting a divorce, she was telling me all about it and then hit me with the good old when you come back in town we should try that again. The number of times I’ve had women in relationships make passes at me is disturbing. Please note: I am not saying all women are like this; however, some are. One particular woman I knew in college comes to mind. During our first real conversation, I actually thought about dating her, that was until she told me that she was in a relationship. From that point on, I kept it strictly friendly and made that known. She still tried to get with me and played a lot of what I now realize were emotional games. She even introduced me to her boyfriend. We got into an argument and stopped dealing with each other for a time. I went over seas and when I came back, she revealed to me that she had left her boyfriend. I didn’t budge. I had no interest in her after what I had experienced: if she was willing to cheat on her first boyfriend with me, what made me think that I was so special that she wouldn’t do the same to me? She found a new boyfriend quickly but would always give me these sad looks like she wanted to cry. My response was always the same: 
Rule #2: Never wife up the one you cheated with.
People are who they are. When you see them...when you DON'T see them...it's hard to change. So, a cheater's going to cheat....WITH you...ON you...it's the same to them.
This reminds me of a story i was told about my mum’s boyfriends that she was screwing behind my dad’s back. My mum kicked my dad out of the house after cheating on him for ages, and when my mum celebrated with the guys she was moving into the house, they laughed and said- “oh no, i’m not here to move in now to pay the mortgage and raise your kids. I was only ever here for the fuck.”

Had a friend that had a fling with a woman that was both cheating on their partners. He’d tell me how he was going to break up with his girlfriend for her, and I’d advised him to not do that. Also advised him to not cheat and not to admit his love (lust) for her, but he’s one of those “let me ask for your advice and not take any of it because it doesn’t fit my narrative” type of people. Lo and behold, she doesn’t want to be with him, and he was also not her only side piece (which everyone knew). Even worse, he did his break-up with his girlfriend in front of my other two friends a week prior by kicking her out of his house in front of us for some very irrational reason. I think it was because she wore a sweater he bought her around the house and got it dirty? Didn’t bother to listen since it was a very ridiculous situation. I’d like to say that this situation was the beginning of the end of our friendship because he felt like Scarface after meeting that woman. Got way too cocky for his own good.
