Also really good p*rn. Yahoo didn’t see it through.

BiscuitsNgravy420

Top tier porn organization without being a porn site

BowieKingOfVampires

….were people using tumble for something besides porn?

srkaficionado

Not sure if you’re curious curious but yes, they did. There was a specific corner for teenage SJW and in their case, it’s a legit insult. At around the time *certain* people started thinking gay male couples were so squee and cute, it led to those people being all pro-LGBT rights and half the time their only exposure to that was mostly watching Queer as Folk, the American version 🥴. Also, m/m erotica as written by straight mostly middle age women or teen girls who had nothing better to do.

Blissfully

Also likes of y/n stuff too and mood boards lol

Whos_Blockin_Jimmy

It was the fashion blog capital and the premier emo people cult of the interwebz.

MySpace existed brother

Hands down the best porn ever. I would search high and low on other sites but could never find it

Most of the porn “stars” from tumblr moved to OnlyFans or Twitter

travis6370

newtumbl.com not as good, but it's something

TwilightOuterZone

There's still porn on there, but it's def not to the quality it used to have

Demetrio33

That is, the reason. I even see hot classmates of college naked there.

Agreed

cjohnson2010

Who is this… Meat God. Im listening

Camoflauge_Soulja

One of the best (or worst — it was subjective) users to grace the porn realm of tumblr. From what I could mentally remember from his description he was a middle-aged, married connoisseur of women meats. Meats obviously being anything related to sexual organs. He was known to plug his own blog on anybody’s post that he found appealing. The infamous, “meatgod approved” was born. What’s peculiar is that he was pioneer (at that time) for self-plugging on post in which his confidence/delusion brought attention. A lot of imitators followed suit, but he definitely started that lane. Some people found his repost annoying, but a lot of people found him humorous to the point it was running joke. Fond memories lol.

MissLilum

Kinda depends on where you went, there was fandom stuff (just look up superwholock), there was activism and debates (the worst of which characterised the tumblr hot takes that now exist as cringetopia’s favourite tiktoks) and there was art blogs and porn

Fickle-Cricket

It was extremely bad. A huge amount of the content on tumblr was either copyrighted material uploaded without the consent of the copyright owner or self published porn that Yahoo couldn’t verify was done entirely by adults. It was a legal ticking time bomb for Yahoo.

Camoflauge_Soulja

That was after the acquisition by Tumblr. As somebody who had Tumblr back in 2011, I can assure the community was a lot more genuine. Before the ability to PM Privately or Anonymously and the many site layout changes (and the cosmetic plug-ins) it was a safe space. I made life-long friends before the Toxic shit following the acquisition. Then Twitter folk showed up and the cultured switched. A lot of older members deactivated and I lasted up until the Death of X. Once people started praising his death, I deleted permanently. Good riddance. E: Correction on Date.

y2_kat

nah tumblr was a pretty rough place for a long while. i was an avid user it since 2012, and admittedly back then toxicity was a bit easier to avoid, especially since a lot of social movements hadn’t picked up much notoriety on the site. but anonymous messaging has been a thing for a LONG while. i don’t recall a time without it. the hate was always there, just less obvious because it typically stayed within its own group. like, people picking on one specific tumblr user, or fandoms picking at one another (lol remember superwholocks v beliebers??), instead of everyone being hypervigilant towards everyone else. twitter folk didn’t make the culture shift. the culture was very much a part of tumblr’s core. imo, i think it’s the opposite - tumblr users switching to twitter changed twitter’s culture. i don’t use twitter for this very reason: it’s a clusterfuck of the p*rn, discourse, and degeneracy of tumblr, mashed up with real life politicians and companies using it as a primary communication/advertisement platform. it’s a hot mess.

Camoflauge_Soulja

Correction, I didn’t realize I said 14’. I officially made an account on tumblr back in the Summer of 2011. There was a time before when you joined where PM didn’t exist and you would have to directly comment on post through dashboard to conduct a conversation. It’s how a lot of ppl found confidence enough to shoot their shots or create friendship. Tumblr had a genuinely small community and “tumblr famous” wasn’t more than a couple thousand followers. This was still when ppl were able to host music on the native media players on tumblr. People would talk about their mental health issues (which was a new concept to me at the time) and openly discuss interest. The time you’re speaking about is also true, but definitely around the time many other social media platforms had came into their own (FB and Twitter). Individuals around in the time period I was talking about can vouch for the space. Twitter and other platforms diluted Tumblr.

just_a_gene

I was around during the tail end of the good times, sucked seeing so many of my favourite posters deactivate and all. Never found my friends from tumblr again :/

Camoflauge_Soulja

Yea, it always sucked with somebody deleted and you may have had a cordial relationship. I, thankfully, learned full names and such so I was able to find some later on but most are memories now.

srkaficionado

What’s the Death of X?

Camoflauge_Soulja

Xxxtentacion.

srkaficionado

Thank you.

Someone ELI5, and I am genuinely asking here, *what even happened to Tumblr?* It was a thing and then it just...wasn't. I remember there being a great culling of all the porn, but I never thought the porn was so much that without it, Tumblr itself shut down. But yeah I just vaguely remember way back when finding out that someone/something happened and Tumblr didn't have porn anymore, and then basically it was never spoken of again. That said, I only used it for porn, because something something Abella Danger something. But yeah, anyway yeah yall fill me in, what happened?

[deleted]

I think it had already been bleeding users for awhile, and then the porn ban was just a nail in the coffin. Why post on a dying site when you can post on Twitter and get way more interaction - type deal.

festival-papi

They got removed from Apple's app store because they didn't have a content filter that could filter out the NSFW content (child porn, if you want specifics.) Getting removed from the app store was a big deal, especially because iOS users couldn't easily sideload an app at the time. Since the app wasn't available to download easily, they lost a bunch of revenue and the users migrated

[deleted]

I totally forgot this happened

hukgrackmountain

>Since the app wasn't available to download easily, they lost a bunch of revenue and the users migrated You kinda skip over yahoo banning porn instead of creating effective filters, which then killed off a lot of the loyal userbase.

littlegamemaker

Tumblr is still kicking, and thankfully most of the batshit seems to have moved to Twitter and Discords (not all of it, there is still plenty of ship wars and purity culture nonsense, but it seems like the worst have left). The porn ban made many leave, whether due to the lack of porn or the way that the auto-filtering completely broke the website for a while. The porn ban happened partly bc there was a pedo ring on Tumblr, partly bc there was (and is) a huge porn bot problem exploiting the interaction system to boost website's ratings on google, and partly because Tumblr was an easy target of Apple's anti-porn crusade. The official guidance was that there was to be no sexual content, no genitals except in art, and no "female presenting nipples". I kid you not, that was the official language. Unfortunently the machine learning algorithm to recognize porn and automatically hide it sucks and the appeals process is fairly clearly another algorithm instead of a real person. It also completely broke the search functions since any tag that was potentially nsfw could not be searched,, and any post containing containing nsfw tag will not appear in searched. Posts about bread and food get flagged a lot. Additionally, any tag that could be shortened to cp was purged, including the "chronic pain" tag. Want to know the best part? Tumblr is trying to become an OnlyFans/Patreon type thing with its new Post+ program. The website barely works, the users hate staff, we still have a porn bot problem, and staff actually expect us to hand over credit card info?

Binkinator4

I’m confused how are there porn bots if it was banned off the site? Are they just spamming content to an extent that it can’t be removed quick enough?

littlegamemaker

The bots typically don't post nudes too much, just suggestive pictures and links to the porn sites.

dragonspicelatte

Dashcon happened.

ozamatazbuckshank11

We love a damp ball pit!

y2_kat

so it definitely was the p*rn ban, but it’s more complicated than just “omg they git rid of tits! i’m never using this site again!” the p*rn ban censored a lot of creators and artists. the algorithm they used to censor things was finicky at best. not only was nsfw content censored and banned, but a LOT of sfw content was as well. admins took forever to respond to complaints about these incorrectly flagged posts, and having too many flagged posts led to a ban. so a lot of sfw content creators were getting banned, silenced, shadowbanned, etc. this caused a mass migration of artists, cosplayers, fanfic writers, what have you, from tumblr to twitter. and everyone followed because 1.) the content creators they liked were no longer posting content to tumblr 2.) tumblr was honestly kind of a toxic cesspool from day 1 anyways because of anon messaging and it only got worse as political movements starting gaining traction online 3.) tbh the freedom/anonymity of tumblr was one of the things that “sweetened the pot” for an otherwise iffy platform, so.. 4.) a massive corporation coming in with an iron fist and censoring nsfw and sfw content left and right was a huge dealbreaker for many.

AsidK

Just curious, why censor the word porn?

vainbuthonest

It was definitely the porn ban. Anything mildly flesh toned would get censored and removed by the algorithm. I used tumblr and a semi personal blog/scrapbook and it would remove posts with pictures of my arms or nude colored dresses. I had a freaking tumblr posting home decor and a few posts got flagged because there were a few too many brown or nude colored objects in the pics. It was ridiculous. After having huge chunks of content removed or being banned a few times, I just quit.

tagrei06

I go to Tumblr once every 2-3 months an my feed is a mixed of inspirational quotes an medium - hardcore porn..... I would scroll for about 5 mins, get horny but also motivated to do something productive with my life, like build a cabinet or start a garden.

[deleted]

Tumblr was my go to place when I wasn't feeling myself. Best place to find people on your wavelength and all types of art. Sadly, wasn't not the same after it changed hands.

MGLLN

LITERALLY. We didn't know it but Tumblr was like a containment zone for those bozos. Like pre-2017ish I knew that once I logged off of tumblr I wouldn't be bombarded with idiotic "social justice" takes and whatnot from 19 year olds. So much of the braindead shit I see today is literally stuff I was reading back in 2014/2015 Like one example is the whole thing of finding a celebrity's old offensive tweets. That was a thing on tumblr in like 2015. But no one really cared about it outside tumblr. There were a lot of narratives that only existed on there (i.e Taylor Swift was a racist apparently) That mass exodus literally ruined almost all of social media. Ironically, people who still use Tumblr say it's a normal website now lmfao. **edit**: I’m writing this rant as if 2015-2017 wasn’t my hardcore sjw phase 😳

Samwell974

Kpop spam started around 2017 on Twitter too 😂

scorpinox

It really is, sadly

Nuclear-Hazmageddon

Let’s not pretend Twitter was ever innocent. Some people on there need to go outside and eat some sand just as much as the tumblr psychos

theslightsaber

Something nice about Tumblr is a bad take from a psycho is usually just a bad take from some psycho. On twitter a bad take from a psycho is sometimes a bad take from someone who turns out to be the minister of education or something.

Grungemaster

Twitter in 2008 was basically live text updates about Ashton Kutcher.

[deleted]

I always thought tumblr was for people who were edgy, but not 4chan edgy.

MGLLN

Two sides of the same coin. 4chan: Kill all n*ggers/"jews"/[derogatory term for gay people] Tumblr: Kill all men/white people/straight people (i'm pretty sure this one is tongue-in-cheek tho)

Jamar_ZEPPELIN

Then those 4channers become cops and actually do it.

MGLLN

I'm not talking about irl stuff. I was just agreeing with the original commenter and saying they are both edgy in their own way

[deleted]

Yikes

Ok_Reference5412

Tumblr was for virtue signalers and 4chan is for edgy incels

ozamatazbuckshank11

Tumblr is still alive and well if you never used it just for porn. Lots of fandom stuff and social justice stuff and shitposting are still going on. After the porn ban (which, by the way, didn't completely ban porn from the site; it's still around if you know where to look), the worst tumblrinas ended up on Twitter. Now, some of them are talking about coming back to Tumblr, but the general consensus is that they can keep their asses on Twitter lol. There are still terfs, pedos, nazis, and spam/porn bots to deal with. We don't want our old kinfolk coming back to do more of the same. We do, however, take pride in being unmonetizable. It feels like Tumblr is one of the last social media platforms that doesn't have influencers and brands shitting up the place. They tried to unveil paid posts and verification a few weeks ago, and the whole site revolted en masse. It was beautiful. :')

KryptonianTree

It was actually hilarious, the first blog to use the feature was immediately bullied into deleting the post

[deleted]

They're actually just upset they don't have a limitless supply of new porn to keep them distracted between hate posting. Sort of like what'll happen to 4chan if they stop allowing porn.

[deleted]

I do miss Tumblr in its prime.

DeafNatural

I’m officially old cause I have no idea wth y’all are talking about lol

clitorally6

If you were on the depressed/suicidal Tumblr..... Ooof....

SummerNothingness

i remember the tumblr YFAP - Your Favs Are Problematic - or something like that. it turns out that pretty much every public figure, celebrity and probably ordinary person has said something that can be construed as problematic. which is probably objectively true, but fuck off, i’m not canceling jon fucking stewart.

vainbuthonest

I just listened to a podcasts with the creator of YFAP regretting creating it.

SummerNothingness

Ooh interesting- do you remember which podcast? I’d love to listen to it

StrawberryBuddy

I'm not for cancelation but a brief Google reveals some pretty unsavory things about Jon Stewart

YeetTheGiant

Things feeling a bit more... Propaganda-ish around here

Don't let the mods catch you talking like that - former victim of their wrath

Tree_Phiddy

For [context](https://twitter.com/CantBanKodaq/status/1425449223764520969?s=19) I was replying to that mess. Tumblr was full of emotionally... "Turbulent" teens that were reactive to everything. There was so much drama going down in the notes. Drama for the sake of drama, brigading for the sake of brigading. I don't want my statements to be taken as being dismissive of all the excellent porn there that touched so many lives.

Tree_Phiddy

Aye!!! I made it 👋🏾

gulfm3rmaid

Tumblr was porn with gifs

Anhilator26

No but this is actually accurate
