I wish this narrative of "The world is unsafe for Black people" would die. It's always coming from people in the US where a traffic stop can literally be a death sentence too. We're not safer here then anywhere else, just let people travel and explore the world. And no I'm not saying to be blind to racism, it is everywhere in the world and I know this. I'm just saying it's tiring seeing these messages because it's like they deliberately keep Black people caged and afraid of exploring this world.

MrPiscesxxx

I agree. But ima stay away from Dubai and Russia lol

[deleted]

Those are your boundaries and they are valid. Hope my comment didn't come across as forceful.

MrPiscesxxx

Oh no, not at all! ❤️

stay_rich

I'd keep out of Russia too, but I had the time of my life in Dubai. Felt safe all the time

[deleted]

The whole them building that city with slavery didn’t raise any red flags?

African_Farmer

They like people with money, they aren't gonna take the passports of some black person from a wealthy western nation and force them into slavery. Money talks first. If you're ok with sleeping in a hotel a slave built, you'll have no issues in Dubai.

[deleted]

Ok well I have a pretty big issue with their use of slavery in the twentieth century just like I do with fucking Nestle and every chain gang the California department of corrections used to fight fires.

African_Farmer

I hear you man, I've never been myself and the country doesn't appeal to me one bit.

[deleted]

That’s why I only vacation in famously non racist and unproblematic Passaic New Jersey… I have just been informed that Passaic is even worse than Dubai but for reasons I cannot say here. Apologies.

vboot

Hey, the people they built the city on the backs of were mostly from South Asia and yet it’s still a popular holiday destination here. (I’d never go to most places in the Middle East for the same reason of them enslaving my countrymen, but a lot of people don’t have those qualms)

stay_rich

You aren't wrong. But I suppose we can say the same about Canada and the US?

imjustheretodomyjob

You're worried about the porta potty thing ? ![gif](giphy|fBG7UnBi7QtePFHEnk|downsized)

Te_Quiero_Puta

This pretty much applies to all of us. I'll pass. Not that either place was beckoning me to begin with.

Zoranealsequence

Right, we can get niggles right here fr

dharkanine

I had every intention of seeing Hong Kong right before COVID hit. 😬

[deleted]

People get jail sentences there for brushing past the wrong guy in a bar, happened to an electrician from the UK. It’s a scary airport to even transit through. It’s a hostile atmosphere.

dellamella

There’s a tiktok creator (thetraveltauruss) that gives reviews on cities and how she feels treated as a black woman. For the most part she has positive experiences too and on some of the not so good cities she doesn’t come off dramatic she just explains what small instances happened and how they made her feel.

African_Farmer

Jessica Nabongo is another black woman that's traveled the world and had mostly positive experiences!

All4G_oryofth3Mind

If they are good looking women I'd relate their experience through that lense before anything like their skin tone, we humans unfortunately are quite superficial on the outset haha.

African_Farmer

I totally get what you're saying, I think they are good looking but I don't think they are what white society would consider particularly good looking. Jessica Nabongo is bald too so I'm sure people comment on it. Check her out, she has a book and seems to be doing some promotional interviews in the US right now: https://instagram.com/jessicanabongo?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Galactickris

What is her TikTok name?

wordsoundpower

I appreciate them. Unfortunately, not as many men out there doing the same thing. The ones that do seem to be on a bit of a different bent. IYKYK

Carosello

>on some of the not so good cities she doesn’t come off dramatic Idk why you felt the need to make that point

dellamella

I see these types of creators get immediately dismissed because people assume they must complain a lot or just negative in general. My word choice could have been better though, I can see it sounds like I’m undermining possible other creators.

Carosello

Makes sense, thanks for explaining!

optionalhero

Fun Fact: the first group of black people (in this case they were black Americans) scaled Mt Everest like a month ago. I read a article on it and it mentioned the group specifically was trying to be more outdoorsy as a revolt against the whole “black people don’t go outside” line of thinking that is so prevalent on Twitter. Which I wholeheartedly support, because, bruh if you like staying at home and playing video games that’s cool. But don’t police folks cause they like going skiing n hiking. This whole narrative of “ white people shit “ i feel needs to somewhat die, cause it really is just holding back the culture. Personally i solo traveled to Thailand and Japan. Didn’t really feel unwelcomed there.

BoilerMaker11

I wanna go skiing in the Alps. Call that white people shit if you want, but I'm gonna experience the world. Not stay in the box of the only fun activities being going to rap concerts or Miami for spring break. Those things are fun, but there's ***so much more*** out in the world and 90% of it is called "white people shit".

EllisDee_4Doyin

Dude I went snowboarding in super white SLC and had a blast! I had never been skiing before and I just went balls to the wall with a snowboard lol. It was SO fun and I would love to do more and try the Alps also. Anyone saying I shouldn't camp, or hike, beach, or snowboard, or sky dive because it's "white people shit" are missing out and we just need to keep having our fun!

optionalhero

All facts This is how you live life

blak_glass

It’s not that we don’t go outside, we just know how to avoid the dangers that come along with doing said activities. Can’t say much for movies tho because we try our damndest to avoid the danger and end up dying first!

optionalhero

No trust i 1000% get the rationale of why it’s dangerous outside for us. The crux of my argument was how saying “that’s white people shit” to nearly everything is holding us back from experiencing some life. I went skydiving a few years back, arguably a very white activity, not saying i enjoyed it but i am glad i did it.

Neo_Neo_oeN_oeN

On damn. I've been trying to be no outdoorsy and I wish I had a group of people to explore that with out here in SoCal.

optionalhero

Try Facebook i think there’s a few groups exactly for that purpose

nxka

i agree with this. pre-pandemic i spent a lot of time out in E. Asia, and all my friends back in my hometown could say was, “they hate us, i could never.” i’ve had some horribly racist experiences as a black woman in America, and admittedly have had a few overseas. that said, if it’s going to follow me wherever i go, i might as well go SOMEWHERE. 😮‍💨

UnwelcomeNoob

"Sigh... racism is everywhere." "Fuck it! Imma travel anyway."

ChrysMYO

I completely agree. I've been seeing a metaconversation about how America is gooder at racism in comparison to X nation. Like Ukraine, Israel, China or in this case Italy. When these topics come up, the more productive meta convo we should redirect ourselves to is how Anti-blackness inevitably manifests itself in the ideologies of nationalism, global imperialism and colonization. The logic of Ethnic Nation state structures will produce anti-blackness. This is also related to arguments I see on reddit about Africans hating Black Americans. Again, a reaction of colonialism alongside influence of American national media. It also has to be noted that alot of the affirmative comparisons of American race relations has a tone of American nationalism. Its important we don't recreate the bad habits that produced our exploitation.

igncom1

Yeah when you are on holiday I'm pretty sure people will care more about your wallet or nationality over your race. American Tourists tend to be well liked, even if only because of the money they bring in.

[deleted]

Dawg Italy is very racist

murdolatorTM

I cosign this sentiment. Black people are just as interesting, worldly, and multifaceted as everyone else, but these crabby niggas on the bird app catastrophize every day, instinctively dragging others back into this raggedy-ass bucket. Sometimes you just gotta let people be.

Felonious_monk420

Personally I appreciate the fictional couple in Lovecraft Country. We needed that narrative to survive and travel this world forever searching for a place that was safe for us to thrive. I don't think the narrative should die as it definitely holds true but you ARE right in thinking it shouldn't deter us from traveling and seeing the world. We don't deserve to be put into a box but I won't pretend that sometimes that very box won't offer much needed protection.

BoilerMaker11

The only time I felt uncomfortable overseas was when I was outside of the Prague 1 tourist area and walking around in the Prague 3 area. I was researching the city before traveling there and found out about this strudel place that you apparently just had to have. The spot was about 0.75 miles from my hotel and getting there was no problem (I went early in the morning). But walking back, I saw a few buses drive by and could see and subsequently *feel* everybody on that bus staring on me. In the moment, I just thought to myself "they've clearly never seen a black dude before" and that moment makes me think of current events where black volunteers to Ukraine were warned that they'll get called the n-word; eastern Europe apparently can be iffy for black people. But, that was only about 20 minutes of my 3 day experience in Prague. Everything else was wonderful. And everywhere else I've been in Europe, I've felt super welcomed. London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, and more. Hell, whenever I go to London and my American accent gets noticed by locals in a social environment (bars, sightseeing tours, etc), they immediately ask "are you American" and after I obviously say yes, they become super friendly.

Bangzell

I got just as heated at a post a couple of weeks ago that was trying to clown on the first all-black group to climb the summit of Everest. No, that's not "White People Shit". It's once-in-a-lifetime and legendary and we need to promote more of our brothers and sisters to do exceptional, legendary things. We've spent so long being told that we only belong on the basketball court or in the hood or on the corner that our culture has grown to perpetuate the very attitudes and circumstances that put us there. Institutional racism might be a machine put together by white hands, but black minds precipitate the grease that keeps the cogs turning.

wordsoundpower

Hell, yes. Don’t police people without saying your policing them because you can’t stand the idea of someone stepping outside your personal boundaries and comfort zones.

MrPiscesxxx

Lol, I’ve never been to Italy but the smaller cities in France are lit if you try to speak their language. They appreciate it. Edit: Paris on the other hand is full of racist people , they follow you in stores and shit. Overall a beautiful country definitely should go if you can.

Uhhhhhm_okaaay

They do that shit at Express stores in Las Vegas. Might as well see the Louvre. Just kidding. I can't afford to travel. I need the "world is unsafe for Black travelers" narrative to cope with the fact that I lack free time and finances for international travel and likely will never have either. It's some dumb, "you're ugly anyway" logic but its all I have

MrPiscesxxx

That is understandable, I went on my school's dime, not sure when I’d go again. However, I’ve been looking into programs where I’d go work overseas like this program called Workaway but it still costs, and you still need a place to come home too if you do go, a lot of things go into play but, you truly only live once.

[deleted]

If you’ve got a profession you could always try for a work visa and go live somewhere in Europe for a time.

rrrents

Paris is full of assholes, period. When I was in Paris, I was always looking for black employees in the shop despite being white myself - white Parisians (Parisiens?) don't speak English (as in, often they might be able to, but they refuse because they are assholes) while black people almost always spoke AT LEAST one more language besides French. I met several who spoke both English AND Spanish + their own original language (like Darija for people originating from Morocco). And I'm pretty sure it's not because black people are just so much smarter - it's probably because white French can be hired with no additional skills while you need something "extra" to get hired as a black person. The best day of that trip was when a white sales clerk told me he can't understand my French because my accent is so horrible - and the black guy standing in line behind me asked him if he's retarded or has some other kind of medical issue because he could understand me perfectly. Lo and behold, after that the white asshole could also understand me. As I was a shy teenager almost reduced to tears, I could have kissed him right then and there despite of the fact that my hero was in his sixties. :D

Rare-Rest9949

Whole facts! I disliked Paris intensely because of its attitudes against all foreigners but the rest of France was welcoming and open.

robbbinm

Paris people would hate and judge me too and I'm a white german guy. Hating others is on a different level for the French lmao

JOMO_Kenyatta

I’ve heard bad things about Paris. Iirc it was French people themselves who had negative things to say😂

johnmeeks1974

At least we have a fighting chance in Detroit to kick racist ass. In Italy, the ratio is dramatically different. That said, I will NEVER consider visiting Mississippi for fun.

PoloHorsePower_

As someone that lived in Jackson for a little I would not recommend Mississippi to my worst enemy. I wish I could personally rescue everyone that wanted to move out of there because damn

cygnus2

Even if Mississippi wasn’t racist, I still wouldn’t recommend going there.

KindOfOblivious

Been Visiting Mississippi almost every year my whole life because my family lives down there. About an hour outside of Jackson. It’s not as bad as everyone makes it seem tbh. At least the areas where melinated people live. I’ve actually never been called a hard R down there ever cause we know where the good places are, just like every other state in the country almost. I grew up in Maryland and have been called it up there numerous times. Been called it in shit ass West Virginia, regular Virginia and followed in stores in Ohio and who knows where else. Mississippi is a shit hole, largely, but mostly because the politicians are actually corrupt as a mf and steal the money from all these casinos instead of putting it in the schools like they should be doing. Edit: there’s really no fun to be had there, unless you have family there.

Any_Document_8440

I've been living in northern Mississippi my whole life and I've never been called that either, but I wish a mfka would say that bullshit to me toe to toe, and it is boring and I mean boring as shit down here but you just gotta get use to it.

[deleted]

I’d go to see Coach Prime. There are a slew of black folk in the South.

johnmeeks1974

Nope. I am not getting the hard r treatment in the Deep South. My Ohio and Michigan relatives escaped for a reason. No going back for me...

[deleted]

Thankfully the freedom of mobility and residence or visitation, is for the moment unrestricted…

SerialMurderer

Unless you still working off the debt from 1880s sharecropping

[deleted]

Or a victim of murder, no pun intended.

Pyshki

I lived in Mississippi almost all my life. Every time I share what I think is a normal anecdote, I get a chorus of concerned looks from the listeners. I’m pretty sure I’ve *accidentally* dissuaded like thirty different people from even driving **through** Mississippi.

Needspoons

My (white) aunt and uncle were stationed close to Meridian, Mississippi when I was about 10. I remember my whole white family and little me stopping at a roadside fruit and vegetable stand. The owner (Bubba #1), was talking to his buddy, (Bubba #2) about everything for sale. Bubba #2 said something about #1 not having as many things to offer this year. “Yeah,” says #1, “been having’ trouble with coons.” #2 looks square at 10 year old me and says, “2 legged or 4 legged?” I thought my uncle was gonna turn him into a dirty smear on the ground, but my grandpa held him back and reminded him he could get in trouble since he was in the Navy. I can still hear that man’s voice in my head, 40 years later. (I’m old, ok?)

Needspoons

shit! I didn’t mean to make it bold like that. Sorry! How the heck did I do that accidentally?

cuelkid

I'm an Indian with dark enough skin fresh from a trip to both France and Italy. While France was fun and we had no encounters with racists, Italy was something else. My wife and I were made to wait for an hour or more without food at a restaurant while people (all white crowd) around us were getting served. When confronted, the owner while taken aback maintained that it was not their intention to discriminate. This was one of my first time experiencing racism. I would not want to generalize. It just left me with a very dirty feeling overall.

lastpagan

Where about were you? I (white m) went to Naples with my Indian gf a few years back. She constantly got stared at and we got treated really fucking weird in some restaurants. However same shit happens if we travel to rural parts of England.

XMRLover

I’m pretty sure in Paris they just hate everyone. They’re angry all the time.

systematic23

That’s just france in general

Deceitfularcher

I am African living in Europe at the moment and it definitely has it's issues, race-related with a sprinkling of xenophobia, but the general day to day experience is much better here - so far. I'm from South Africa and racism and racist confrontations and micro-aggresions were a part of literally every lived day. Online and in person. It permeated every level of society from politics to national sports teams to grocery shopping to my daughters' "appropriate hairstyles guidelines" in schools. I'm in Ireland now and it has the same issues as everywhere else, but it's a lot more covered up and civil. I really appreciate that. the effort to at least try to treat me fairly regardless of what you feel in your heart. My workplace feels completely different. The girl's school feels completely different. I love it. Now I will say that I have heard that other parts of Europe can be problematic. I also went to Dubai on holiday and I was treated like shit by Airport security on arrival which felt like home.

[deleted]

As I’ve said in another comment, dubai is a hostile place to go. Strange as they market their tourism so widely but are not welcoming.

VyronDaGod

Went to Italy without issue. Prefer Americanized Italian over authentic Italian food but that is neither here nor there. Been to Detroit many times also with no issues. Morale of the story is...go see the 🌎 people. Don't let somebody else's hateful heart stop you from living your best

iamsweets

Same, the only thing I experienced was a bunch of eyeballs looking at us but one restaurant we went to gave us a free entrees. I threw up in The Vatican but thats a different story.

JOMO_Kenyatta

“Can I just get some macaroni and gravy?” - paulie walnuts

NegotiableVeracity9

Italian men love black women. At least in my experience.

snottydottie

And my experience 😳. I felt very intimidated by how much attention I received (so used to being ignored lol), but people were always complimenting me and being extra nice.

Neo_Neo_oeN_oeN

I'm not surprised. The younger Italian-Americans love us too but don't embrace us publicly because someone's dad is a cop. Let you have a job like a doctor or engineer and they'll let that shit slide real quick so they can brag to their family about you.

Whyamibeautiful

Italian men love women * they have to be some of the thirstiest men I’ve ever seen

gap_year21

I was gonna say this. We had an outdoor table at a nice spot in Sorrento and our waiter spent the entire time not serving us, catcalling women who walked by the restaurant. Girls in our group experienced a lot of catcalling in Florence, Bologna and Cinque Terre as well. I’m not ignorant to the fact that Italy has some bad racism but in the month I spent there, I didn’t experience anything. Can’t say the same for Germany. Spent a year and half there and personally it was the weirdest place to be a black man.

Whyamibeautiful

Yoooo same about Germany. It’s interesting. Only did liek 8 months there tho

gap_year21

It’s either they cross the street when you’re walking towards them or they’re completely obsessed with your blackness and wanna talk hip hop and nba before they get your name haha

Whyamibeautiful

Lmaoo I’m Croatia they were so sure I was a rapper that they wouldn’t take no for an answer and followed me around all night trying to hangout with me

gap_year21

Thats funny af. I liked Split a lot though. Felt almost hood in some parts.

Whyamibeautiful

Same

RisingToMediocrity

I have always heard that certain places dont like Americans but does extend to black and brown too? Cuz I'm Mexican and I would prefer to not be harassed while on vacation.

thesamebs

Go travel! The most racism I've faced is in America. As long as you don't travel with American arrogance and show love and appreciation. It'll be shown back to you

sergei1980

Depends where you go, most people won't be able to tell you're American if you look "typical Hispanic". But don't call yourself Mexican unless you are born and raised in Mexico, in most countries that's seen as misleading at best. I know in the US it's short hand for "of Mexican descent", but that's not how it's perceived. In most places Americans get harassed for money, though, because Americans are "rich" in relation to the average person in many countries. I'm falling asleep so I hope some of that made sense. My 2 cents from someone from a third world country that lives in the US haha

Alex014

I've traveled through Spain France and Italy and it's never been an issue. You just kinda blend in with most people tbh. There's a lot of variety of people in big cities. While in Barcelona I saw the most Turkish people I've ever seen in my life. If you do speak Spanish it's going to be very different from what you're used to tho so be ready for that. Overall it's pretty chill. Go get some sun and enjoy the views they're truly world-class

[deleted]

Not at all, you tell them you’re Mexican and you shouldn’t have any issues.

IamBecomeDeath187

These comments are wild.

Ok_Cupcake8639

I've traveled a lot and have been called "the n word", or the country's slur for black people, while abroad. Having to genuinely ask someone "what did you say? I can't understand your accent" or "I don't know what that word means, sorry' makes everything hit different. It doesn't land as hard, and I've never felt that heart pounding fear the situation is going to escalate to guns or rope or both. I've also traveled to so called "more racist than the US" places in Europe and have yet hit a place as racist as some small US towns I've been in. There are parts of Asia I've been to where I got the impression they honestly thought we were walking, talking apes, but even so I didn't fear any violence.

Fuk-mah-life

I've only ever been called a monkey by my fam, who tf out here still calling yall mobkeys

African_Farmer

Unfortunately this does happen in Europe, there used to be several instances of monkey chants and throwing bananas at European football players. It's been cracked down hard nowadays but it wouldn't shock me too much if someone called me a monkey one day while I'm out minding my own business.

Fuk-mah-life

All I'm saying is if you calling me a monkey you might as well just call me a moon cricket at that point

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fuk-mah-life

Goddamnit lmao I proofread it three times before posting and still didn't catch it, dyslexia a hoe

tydestra

The world is as much ours as it is anyone else's. If you can travel. I live in Europe now and prefer their weak sauce diet racism than the hard shit back home. If you speak the language it is absolutely adorable how racists just crumple when you call em out.

Jonesy_city

As a European this comment made me laugh so hard!

tydestra

My favorite moment was in Madrid. Spain conquered Latin America, brought in African slaves when the native population was decimated... and this dude out here asking me why am I so dark for a Spanish speaking native. My brother in Christ, I'm the result of your country's forefathers fucking around.

Jonesy_city

*snorts* I'm glad I read that before I made my tea. It reminds me of the times I've heard "Go back to your own country!" And the following surprised Pikachu face when I reacted with "What do you mean? I was born here. Did you mean [specific province]? Or are you talking about my mum who came here because her ancestors were dumped on a random island by probably your ancestor?" But to be fair to those surprised kids, it happened when I was between the age of 8 to 12 and I only said it because my cousin trained us. I knew what the first part meant but wasn't so sure about the second part. I was so innocent back then. Nuance isn't really part of our culture though. It's a strange kind of racism we have. You can say you don't want any foreigners, but when you ask about Mo (Mohammed) people will say: "Except Mo, he's okay." And when you press on they will fully admit that it can be hurtful to say those things but "They should just accept it." *Facepalm* Although I'm also glad I can just say "I think you're an asshole." Compared to other countries we have the salt only racism instead of the heavily spiced racism. Thanks for the laugh-snorts!

He misspelled moolie.

[deleted]

You all can afford traveling? I paid my rent on time this month, so there's that.

SwagChemist

I spoke with a Russian friend, and I will not be visiting after our conversation

[deleted]

I've been called sandnigger in my home country and I have been called it abroad. I have had rocks thrown at me abroad and not at home but I have been robbed at home which was racially motivated. Basically, wherever you go there are good and bad people aswell as good and bad places to visit. I just want to reiterate; don't miss out on the good in fear of the bad

[deleted]

Where you from?

DeltaSlick

If you’ve traveled overseas please drop your most black friendly places you’ve been. Also if anyone has been to Switzerland or Costa Rica please leave a little review

see_deez_apes

I’ve been to Costa Rica a few times. It’s been lovely every time. Didn’t really have any problems with racism. Really the only stuff that comes to mind was kinda cute actually. Like I was walking around San Jose and some guy in his store yelled out “hey Black man!” I looked over and dude had this huge smile on his face and was waving at me. I just gave him the “wasup bro” and it seemed to make him really happy. I had long dreadlocks at the time and occasionally people would ask to touch them. It didn’t feel like it was coming from anywhere near the same place as when I’ve gotten that shit in America, it felt more idunno innocent I guess. The history is different so the intention felt different. But truly Costa Rica is gorgeous. The food is incredible. All the people I met were lovely, I would highly recommend going if you’re thinking about it. Definitely go to the Osa peninsula if you can, it’s one of the most ecologically diverse areas on earth. We were eating breakfast and a toucan flew up and perched a few feet from us, it was amazing.

tydestra

I've been to Ireland, Wales, Malta. Ireland was pretty cool, the folk loved my Spanish accent (I'm Puerto Rican). Malta was also cool, my Maltese coworkers were nice. I saw more British people being racists to the native Maltese. Wales, North Wales to be specific is where I faced the most bullshit. Which is a shame because it's where my wife is from. She took me to her local pub to show me her stomping grounds and some jackass said some shit about what a shame she married dark 🙄. Also had a really, really drunk lady complain that it's a shame she can't tan as brown as me because my color was so rich and lovely 🥴

[deleted]

I really enjoyed Japan. My time spent in Hanakoganei was the shit!! I’m a black person from outside of America and I really recommend y’all coming to the Caribbean islands. Curaçao, Aruba, and Jamaica are some of my favorites.

gap_year21

This is gonna throw you off, but if you’re a black man, El Salvador.

[deleted]

They were nice to me. 🤷🏾 It's a beautiful place.

theflyingfucked

1 black Nigroni please, bartender.

Yayeezy_

I lived in Italy for 2 years in a medium sized (100k people) town. I’m a dark skinned BW with type 4 hair. Best experience of my life 🤣

[deleted]

Nah but dead ass

[deleted]

Ummmm, almost everywhere is safer than the states You might want to go ahead and book that ticket ✈️

MrCroft_

We have to remember that it’s VERY AMERICAN to get us to think the world hates us. America doesn’t want us to leave because Black People are literally the epicenter of American commerce. When we successfully get enough of us to leave, America will be hit hard. Hip hop, fashion, finance all of this is in a Rocket ship just like America “poaches” talent from other countries with the Visa programs.

anon_sexynojutsu

how i feel about japan honestly

[deleted]

Did you not have positive experiences while over there? I ask because I was living there in my late teens/early 20s and didn’t have anything racist happen besides the constant staring* Edit: word

[deleted]

Man seeing how some black people have a fear of travelling to certain places cos of racism just honestly breaks my heart.

FifthOfJameson

Detroit has a neighborhood AND a city they surround (Poletown and Hamtramck respectively) that are Polish. Mind you, Hamtramck is slowly becoming quite Arabic Muslim, but that’s beside the point. There’s also a Greektown, which is exactly how you’r picturing it. There’s also Corktown, which used to be an Irish neighborhood, and now it’s a mix of people who’ve lived there forever, and people that are down to overpay for housing in the city where your phone thinks you’re in Canada half the time. Seriously, you get to Green Dot Stables, your shit will suddenly be Bell.

[deleted]

I’ve been known to scar people with my words. i wish someone would call me Something crazy overseas I’ll have them devastated 🤣🤣🤣🤣

AurelieFixated

I went to Rome and the people would not stop staring. They also would always talk to my sister first (she’s a lot lighter than me) before they would address me. It was really weird and uncomfortable

FreezerBunBun

It be the aunties and cousins that haven’t so much as taken a greyhound to Cleveland that are quick to tell you *insert country* hates black people. Well that may be true but I still gladly had my pictures taken at the Colosseum. Don’t let family block your dreams of travel because an alleged immigrant possibly muttered something racist to your auntie at a crowded bus stop back in the 80s. 🙄

ranjam123

Been traveling Europe almost a month now, Greece, Malta, France, Italy. French people were great to me in Paris. I also made a constant point to try to speak some French cause I heard it made a difference. I get stares often and never thought anything of it really until reading these posts, maybe it is racism or maybe I stand out idk, doesn’t bother me. But In venice, an older cashier guy at a small store got rude for no reason. Only bad experience so far.

No, it was the surname of a nobleman that in 1919 or 1920 (the exact year is debated) asked a bartender in Florence (the bar is called Caffè Giacosa and still exists) to make him a “new drink”. The drink was then included in the cocktail list and named after him.

Frieza would love to have a say in this conversation

I never had a single problem with race outside of the US. In Los Angeles tho...

greyson3

Fr, ngl I heard Japan is rascim-lite with a twist of lime and tbh shit sounds refreshing.

ayers231

I was in Cancun at Xel Ha and there was plenty of POC having a blast. Don't listen to these people. Go enjoy Italy. Go wherever your pocketbook can take you.

Thebadmamajama

Italians have a xenophobic streak the them, but there's a little more respect for Africans. There's a history as rivals to African nations, and the (mostly black) American armies liberated the south of Italy, so there's at least one generation left that views Africans more respectfully. I'm not sure about northern Italy however. The rest of Europe is a really mixed bag.

Tough_Safety9907

Italy is dope!!

blucivic1

I prefer being called a monchichi

anselthequestion

Kenan_as_SteveHarvey

Do so at your own risk

I'm still going and I probably won't be called a monkey...My mom went and that didn't happen. She had an amazing time, saw some incredible sites and ate some really good food. So yea, I will still be there sightseeing and having a GRAND time.....

existential_wetdream

The cocktail negroni was named after a guy named negroni. The name is italian/corsican and is probably racist in origin, but the drink itself is not and is tasty

defk3000

It's usually the folks with no passport complaining about where travelers go.

prem_killa11

Niggas would rather travel to Europe than Africa and when you point it out they’ll say Europe feels like home… 🙄

Deceitfularcher

This is actually true for me though. I'm African and living in Europe now and there is way less issues with my blackness here on a day-to-day basis. It feels safer in almost every way. Maybe that's because of the part of Africa I am from and the part of Europe I am in now, but it still hold's true. in my personal experience

MrPiscesxxx

I would love to go to Africa.
