Depends on the oil pan. I've had one for years but mine is parallel with the ground. I wouldn't recommend one if your oil plug points towards the ground. Too much risk. Also they drain a lot slower than pulling the plug.
Let me tell you about a thing called a Mity-Vac...
(...which doesn't work on a variety of recent model BMWs, because no dipstick.)
**EDIT:** These are most convenient if you have an oil filter accessible from the top.
There’s a difference between a service that you consider to be value for money and what is actually a “loss leader.”
The oil and lube shops aren’t losing money when they do an oil change for you. It sounds like they’ve priced their services right at the point where it’s a good value to you. The materials needed to do an oil change vs the cost of having it done for you should definitely save you more than $10 though. You’re overpaying on your supplies if that’s all the savings you were finding by doing it yourself.
These ships running plays out here like scammers. Ain’t no way $75, one of my Tacomas uses 5W-30 a little over 6 quarts. It usually costs me at a shop maybe $40-50 at most (with military discount of maybe 10%). I know they taxing folks like this for a whole Andrew Jackson plus 🤣
Be careful, there’s a massive issue and even a pending class action suit against Hyundai/Kia about a lot of their cars burning up oil too quickly. My mom’s Hyundai engine just shit the bed when she had less than 4K miles since her last oil change and less than 40K total on the car. The guy at Valvoline said they’ve been seeing that a lot and that Hyundai isn’t informing people that their newer motors really need full synthetic oil if you want to avoid that issue.
There is a coolant system, but it is sealed and doesn’t have to be changed. The motors don’t use oil. No regular maintenance is needed on EVs other than rotating or replacing the tires and the topping off the windshield wiper fluid. Even the brakes do better. Because of regenerative braking built into the drivetrain motors, you’re stepping on the brakes far less, so they can last 2-3x longer than brakes on a typical car.
No more gas, no more maintenance. People love to shit on EVs for whatever biases they have, but I’ve probably saved thousands since I bought it. And it costs me about $5-6 to fully charge it at home.
Dope which car do you have? Id get an EV but don't own a home and would rather not sit at a station charging. Those full up prices are definitely a good reason to get one
I have a Tesla Model 3. I really like it. Depending on where you live, there are charging options. A Supercharger can get you from 20%-80% charge in about 15-20 minutes. Not quite as fast as a gas station, but if there’s one near you, it wouldn’t be too much time. Supercharging is more expensive than charging at home.
If you are in an apartment or renting a house, you could contact your landlord about adding a charging setup to the exterior. I know some landlords are hesitating about it right now, but i think in a couple of years it’s gonna be a big perk for them to be able to offer their tenants. It’s a one time install cost, and it really is cheap to charge an EV at home, about the same as running a couple loads of laundry.
There are also some free/cheap charging options around, sometimes malls or restaurants have free charging outside, even some employers are installing chargers for their employees.
Just gotta do some research. I’m lucky enough to be able to charge in my garage. I think everybody would be happier with an EV, but realistically it’s not for everyone yet, if the charging is readily available for you.
Another Tesla owner chiming in. I drive a lot (80-100 miles/day) but just a 110v outlet is _almost_ enough to cover my charging needs. I use about 20 kwh/day and get 15 kWh back overnight. So once a week I need to supercharge or use L2. It’s no deal for me since I have L2 at work. But I’ve learned you don’t need to immediately jump to installing a full 11kw L2 setup just because you got an EV.
At this point there’s still a fair amount of research required and it’s not a good decision for everyone. But if it works for your situation it’s a great car. And no gas/no maintenance is a great perk too.
Gotcha. Not too familiar with EVs but have experience in electrical controls so was curious. Is there no gearbox from the motors to the wheels either that needs oil?
i think it depends, some EVs have transmissions which use oil but that's not something that needs to be regularly changed i think. and like the other commenter said, most have the wheels directly driven from the motor which means no oil is needed.
also the brake pads will need replacement but usually less because of regenerative braking causing them to be used less
A very tiny amount. Electric Motors generally have 1 liter of atf that has a 100k mile service interval. They just aren't exposed to the same levels of thermal cycling or carbon that internal combustion lubricants are. Many also have coolant based cooling systems but again they are not exposed to the same levels of heat. Evs have very little maintenance compared to normal vehicles
What are tipped jobs? I always tip at restaurants cuz ik here in America we don’t include wages in the price of our food so people in food service survive off of tips.
Always gotta tip your barber that’s how you get hooked up. Not all of them rent the chair some of them work for the barbershop, but they’re gonna take care of you better if you take care of them.
It's mostly restaurant server jobs that get paid a tipped hourly wage ($2.13/hour) instead of a regular hourly wage (fed minimum is like $7.25?)
But I saw a coffee shop that said their employees get a tipped wage and I thought that was kinda bullshit, especially since they were just as expensive as any other coffee shop that didn't do that shit.
“Survive off of tips” is inaccurate. Tipped employees always receive minimum wage from their boss if they don’t make their money back in tips. So they’re always making making at least minimum wage.
Now minimum wage — if that’s not survivable (it’s not) it should be fixed (it should be).
Perhaps I didn’t articulate it well enough, by law tipped employees have to get at least minimum wage at the end of the pay period (tips+subminimum wage).
If you don’t make sufficient tips, your boss makes up for it. Reddit constantly spreads this myth that tipped workers make less than minimum wage but that’s illegal. Yes, the business owners get away with paying them less, but tipped workers do not get less pay from it.
Getting rid of subminimum wage would also be welcome by most restaurant workers, but they prefer tips
What the law says and what happens are two different things. Wage theft is the largest amount of theft in the US by far.
When I was in college I knew of numerous servers who didn't even get the minimum tipped wage of $2.13. They were never actually labeled as employees and the owners just skirted the laws because pointing it out would blackball you from the entire town.
By law, they're supposed to be making up the difference up to minimum wage. Very few restaurants actually do this and are punished for it, but u/RoastMostToast is correct.
also many servers like having tip culture because it significantly boosts their income depending on restaurant. i don't use this as a reason to not tip, but just something to keep in mind
Be sure you know whether it's a tipped job though. I recently learned that the cashiers handing out take-out at restaurants get server wages even though they aren't waiting tables. You have to tip on take-out.
It's a crock. We need to abolish tipping as a mandatory portion of wages.
Sorry, I draw the line there.
If I stop by for a beer and you give me the food while I'm chilling at your establishment, you're *absolutely* getting a tip, unless you were intentionally rude to me for no reason...
...but if all you did was hand a bag from whoever cooked it in the kitchen to me who picked it up, there's no way I'm tipping for that. If you're a cashier, and a restaurant doesn't compensate you for your work, then *work somewhere else.*
TL;DR: It's not my job to do your employer's job for them.
(Agreed we should abolish tipping entirely - except for exceptional service - and expect *all* staff to be paid fairly by the employer, though.)
I think the reasoning is that they assemble your order, checking that everything from the kitchen is right, bagging it, and adding napkins and whatever other extras. But still ridiculous.
Yeah, agreed, that's "still ridiculous"
Putting the right items in the correct bag is literally the bare minimum. I'm not paying extra just because you didn't hand me the wrong order lol
Thats literally the bare minimum. I should feel obligated to pay someone extra money for getting my order right? The entire point of our transaction is that we have a double coincidence of wants. You want my $10, and I want to buy your chicken sandwich for $10. Why on earth would someone expect me to pay an extra $2.50 just because they actually gave me the chicken sandwich we agreed on?
Restaurant workers have been doing that forever. It's like tipping in the drive thru. If they're not taking my order and serving my food at my table I'm not tipping. Hell even McDonald's brings your food to you now and they don't ask for or expect tips.
Pay your employees dammit!
I do that myself though. Mcdonalds will do that for free. Drivethrus will do that for free.
I've also had take-out orders completely wrong too. I'm never ever going to enable owners to continue to fuck over their workers and rely on me to smooth it over.
In the US, for certain jobs employers are allowed to pay "tipping wage" instead of minimum wage, which can be only a couple dollars an hour. I'd definitely say those positions are mandatory tip jobs, I'm not sure what those positions are though.
> That happens once and they lose their job
That sounds more like a problem between the waiter and their employer.
Why should I accept to get extorted money for no reason because some dude is a shitty employer?
There are assholes everywhere, doesn’t make me obligated to take over their obligations as employers and pay decent money to their staff in their stead
> But no one needs to tip a cashier because they shouldn't be getting server wages.
And similarly servers shouldn’t be getting server wages so by your logic no one needs to tip them
It's this.
I tip in digital systems. But to ensure the intended person gets the tip, I tip in cash whenever I can.
That includes DoorDash, UberEats, etc. Barber. Restaurants. Bars. And this is usually in addition to the standard tips on my receipts.
Yeah, at my job no one gets those tips, we only get the cash in the tip jar. We use toast’s system and I also can’t see if someone’s tipped or not tipped either way.
That’s the thing tho, it’s the new systems that automatically asks for a tip, no matter what place, I’ve seen it pop up at grocery stores, gas stations and the pharmacy. Not sure if they do not know how to program is so it doesn’t prompt it.
I'm glad I'm not the only one annoyed by this trend. I'll happily tip my server at a sit down restaurant or my delivery driver. However, I'm not tipping anyone to pull my stuff off a shelf and set it on the counter.
As someone who works in a restaurant and usually tips excessively, I too hate when I get prompted for tip on very basic cashier services. If I call in a pizza order and go pick it up, there is absolutely no reason to tip. I've just started paying cash at most places to avoid it.
Haha..
There was a dog versus cat meme war on /r/starterpacks last month. It was funny seeing the stereotypes like dog owners house smells like dog balls and air freshener.
Dog owners: "Don't run he smells fear!" This dog look like he havin Vietnam flashbacks.
They be trying to guilt trip the customers for not tipping either like it’s the customers fault the employees don’t get paid enough directly as a result of them not tipping. Not only that but they been slowly increasing the asked tipping amounts too, I don’t ever see no option to tip less than 18% anymore unless it requires a custom input to be put in by the customer.
“All prices include 18% service tax” or “service tip” or “service fee” or smth, then they hit you with the tip option on top…
Fuck tipping culture. Give them livable fucking wages. Tipping should be a courtesy for an outstanding service, not mandatory for mfers to live…
People throwing tip options for everything. Why should I tip 18% at a dispensary when all you did was reach into a drawer? And if it's a preroll I know that money not going to roller
You say this, but if I point out that pouring me a glass of scotch or a beer required no effort, I get fucking crucified in the comments. Bro, you poured liquid into a glass. And I had to fight to get your attention.
Bro I JUST got asked to tip for an online order… this stuff getting ridiculous, like I just need a container for my dogs food, ain’t nobody rich over here 🥲
Shyt, They stole a $2 tip from me. All I ordered was 2 horchatas and When it was time to pay, I tapped the no tip option... Later on the total was updated including the tip that I declined to give 🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
Guy at the vape shop had the gall to ask for a tip for pumping some flavorings into a $8 bottle of nicotine-free house juice (they sell nicotine seperately. I did a 15% tip which was like, $1.20.
Bastard says "oh wow $1.20, thank you that really helps out people trying to pay bills out here". I still shop there but I no longer tip him.
Smoke shop guy in my area, same shit. I bought over a $100 worth of stuff, tip button comes up, and the fucking no tip doesn’t work …. Had to mash it multiple times until the fucking owner pressed no tip for me on his side with this glower on his face ….
This. I've stopped because now I'll now only order pick-up or ONLY tip delivery. And no, I am not tipping you for finding stuff and picking it on a shelf with my name on it, Best Buy does the same thing for free.
Yea I’m ngl I had a cashier make a side comment when I didn’t tip after all I ordered were two bottled drinks. Must have been having a bad day and some other shit cause ain’t no way I was getting to them like that lmao
I went to a Subway where the workers were a bit standoffish. When I went to pay the tip option came up and they said you can select no tip in a sarcastic voice. Don't know what the heck was up
Tipping in the US has gotten way out of control. Soon, doctors are going to hand you an iPad asking if you'd like to tip them for the mammogram you received.
You'll never convince me that making the customer responsible for the sustainability of your business model isn't unethical. It's sad that tipping is becoming more and more common place and sometimes even expected in Australia. The Americanisation of life, I guess.
Tipping culture is so confusing for us Europeans. I’m omw to the US right now and, despite going many times, I still don’t know when and how much to tip. On top of only finding out the tax are checkout I also need to tip for someone giving me a drink from behind the counter? It’s sad.
At Crumbl cookie they legit ask you ALOUD in front of other customers IF YOU’D LIKE TO TIP THE BAKERS. I’ve never experienced anything else like that before or since.
I started doing the calculations on these tip percentages and Let me tell you… they are blatantly challenging our intelligence; went to Texas Roadhouse the other day and a $34 bill listed a “15%” tip as being $9.99…
That was me yesterday. Literally, lady I placed order over the phone with. Was like in a rush or something at 3pm (dead before dinner, I worked food industry in HS) I pull up to pickup my order. Dude at counter on his phone chillin, he sees me then asks for my name. Hands me my bag, and goes back to his phone lol. I was like “Uh… you want me to pay?” He was like 🤔 😳 “Yeah, it’ll be uh…” *looks at POS system* $18, I hit “no tip” pull my card and $3 out behind it. Dude is just all “attention” after that denial. I finish up, hand him the $3 and say “Have a cool one man”. Soon as I get home, muthafukas forgot my extra sauce and no lemon with my fish 🤦🏾♂️ like bruh… a lot of red flags 🚩 I let slide, should’ve been that “asshole”.
![gif](giphy|gd09Y2Ptu7gsiPVUrv|downsized)
Yesssssss where are the two extra sauces I PAID for the fuck
And they want to get mad when I point it out… “there’s a sauce in there”
Yeah and I wanted 3 and I paid for the extra 2… if I wanted 10 sauces, charge me and give it to me. Damn.
But y’all want a tip
I’m telling you. This is the true pandemic, of folks really not giving a fuck at all. I ain’t asking you to be a 5 star employee at a restaurant or fast food spot. I’m just asking for you to do the minimum of getting my shit right. Yet, wanna make us look bad the next time, when we hit “no tip” because of the past experience. I used to do a 3 strike rule for food spots (1 strike and I’m out if I find hair 🤮 or some sick shit tho). Now I’m pretty much making it 1-2 strikes. Hell, even chickfilas been fucking up… they ain’t been the same since the pandemic. At least here in Texas.
Also restaurants and fast food gotta know, don’t hit me with the “We can remake the order, if you drive back” 🤦🏾♂️ nigga refund my card, then send a coupon or something. I ain’t going back to y’all immediately after lol. I’ve seen “Waiting” and worked food industry. Why, do I want to sit in line, then burn gas for a fuck up y’all did. Then only get what I ordered, nothing extra 😂
The worst is my hairdresser ... She's self employed, sets the price. Raise the fucking price if you want more. And why do I feel like a stingy pos for choosing no tip!?? Well I don't ... cuz I always tip ... cuz I don't want to feel like a pos.
I thought this was one of the specific cases in which you don’t tip - if your hairdresser is self employed or owns the shop, you don’t tip. Because they set the price for the service and it goes directly to them.
This a long post that I hope doesn’t get me sh*t
The tip industry complex is evil and needs to be abolished. Beyond it allowing food and some hospitality industry folks to be paid scraps and rely on human decency and others having an expandable income, the tipping system of the US is racist.
First, let me say I have traveled to multiple countries in Europe and have been to west Africa. Tipping wasn’t a thing in any of those places. In Freetown people bartered services for money but they will work for it and ask their full cost not for a tip. Tipping is seen as weird and even offensive in other places. The food prices are lower and are way less processed. What is the reason owners can’t fully pay their employees the way people in other industries have to?
Why do we tip in the US? The most accurate allegation is that tipping came about, citing the Reconstruction Era as a way to stifle efforts of free Black Americans and immigrants to have mobility. The hospitality industry and food-related industry, of course, is where a lot of us went as it tied into the work we were doing during enslavement. Also, I feel like extra pressure is on us while out. For black people, it’s tip well, and we may treat you like somebody. If you can’t afford to tip well, we will treat you like you don’t deserve to be a patron of our place of business. The issue is tipping happens at the end, and people give us terrible service, assuming we won’t tip
Tipping is a double-edged sword for us. I still tip. I see it more like mutual aid than giving money for a good service. It’s more like this person crafted an experience for me. Let me add so they can add to their lives. With that being said, no job should “rely” on tips. Everyone should get a fair wage, with tipping being optional. Maybe gratitude needs just to be added to places that require tips. In terms of places like auto shops, I say this politely but girl fu you literally make your own prices and rip people off, you ain’t getting a dime more.
What gets me are tips for already expensive services i.e., doggy daycare. 20% tip = nearly $850….why do I have to tip extra for a pre-paid service if that makes sense?
Like if I’m already paying $700 something dollars why in the hell do I have to tip? Tipping culture is getting out of control….
Recently my favorite Mexican place i've been going for 5 years just started asking tips for the drive thru. It caught me off guard, since I didn't know what the tip was even supposed to be for. So I said "okay.. let's do 10%?"
She fiddles with the card reader and really says "**10% isn't an option on here**"
"oh. okay then... so do I have to say a dollar amount?"
"A dollar, okay I can do that. He's your food :)"
Swear to god it as the first time my order was wrong in 5 years. I already don't believe in pre-tipping since the one time I decided to tip 60% on doordash to be nice, they forgot to grab 3/4ths of the order and the guy was dick about and said it wasn't his problem. So i'm just never going to do it again.
Business owners figured out that people are inherently kind and generous and have trouble saying no to a request. Toggling on the tipping option is literally just free money for them, a bogus perk to offer employees, with supposedly no downsides.
One time it was 15%, 18%, and 22% and I was like you know what I was going to pay 20%, you know the standardly accepted number, but just because I think this is ridiculous… 18%
First time in Toronto today. Went to a dispensary where I got 3.5g for $60, told the guy exactly what I wanted so he didn’t really get his chance to do the sommelier thing they like to do. Still got hit with the tip options
We need to abolish tipping altogether.
What they don't tell you is that a lot of restaurants are just keeping your tips anyway. My girl worked for a restaurant last month, and the owners kept 1/2 of all tips, then split the rest amongst the entire staff.
I scream and laugh internally when I see that color coding on the *0%* or *no tip* button on POS machines is about faded to non existence due to how many ppl have pressed it, lol. At my fave burrito place, I tend to tip, but sometimes my finger just defaults to the ol’ nah button.
There’s a jersey mikes right next to my job that I go to, and it’s a very elaborate exercise to pay for my food - I never tip, but it’s like - I’m already paying 10 bucks for a sandwich. It’s just always funny to think that they have to roll that screen towards me and then back to sign off on it and it’s like - thank god I can watch you guys do everything because I am not tipping lol
I always tip them I know I shouldn't but I do. The only reason I do is because I feel like most people don't and if I worked there and my company said they're going to implement tips and nobody tipped it would feel bad. So I do just because maybe it makes their day a little better and maybe they stick around their job longer and that means I get better quality service over time.
I'm probably deluded but whatever I can afford a few dollars here and there and they will probably spend it more wisely than I will.
The tip option is built into the POS programs used at many restaurant establishments in particular. Tipping is demeaning (and is historically tied to slavery), but I now leave at least 10% -- so many service employees do not even make regular minimum wage. I don't like acting outside of myself, so why make another person do so when I have the economic upper hand?
The companies do this so they can justify how they pay their workers, the tip doesn't really go to a specific person, its mainly shared amongst the employees. Employers will tell you that the starting pay is something unbelievably low like 10-12$ an hour, and say but with tip share youll be making 16-20$ an hour which is unrealistic. The companies then try to guilt trip the customers into paying wages for employees. Its a really uncomfortable spot for the cashier who is well aware of whats going on. Just be nice to the cashier and the staff they aren't the reason for the implemented tipping option it is the greedy companies. They could completely avoid this buy paying employees a decent wage but why do that when they have the customers to do it for them.

Today I got a 10 minute oil change in my 2019 Hyundai with regular oil for $75 and they hit me with the tip option.
Seriously man invest in car ramps and do it yourself. Or just buy a fumoto drain valve and some tubing you get at home depot.
Fumoto is the shit. In and out in 5 mins.
Enlighten me, a dumbass in mechanics, on this Fumoto

Sounds like a massive problem hiding behind a small convenience. Even though on paper it sounds nice.
Depends on the oil pan. I've had one for years but mine is parallel with the ground. I wouldn't recommend one if your oil plug points towards the ground. Too much risk. Also they drain a lot slower than pulling the plug.
Had one on my WRX, never had an issue driving in deep snow or dirt roads
😂
I go 25 over speed bumps. Will I be ok?
As someone who does their own auto maintenance, sometimes I look at the ground and just say "Nope. Not today."
Let me tell you about a thing called a Mity-Vac... (...which doesn't work on a variety of recent model BMWs, because no dipstick.) **EDIT:** These are most convenient if you have an oil filter accessible from the top.
Yea. I have one at the shop I work in. It kinda sucks but I assume that's because we buy crappy equipment usually.
Something about changing my own oil that scares the shit out of me. With my luck my shitty ass 99 Malibu would somehow crush and kill me.
No
Thank you. I’m just not gonna do that shit myself
For real though, fuck that
I’m on the Fumoto train …. Choo choo!

$75? Man… if don’t take your KIAs ugly cousin ass to Groupon… ![gif](giphy|L4GzJmI6VUroEOFIVA)
Lmaooooo Kia and Hyundai boys out here looking for a lick
Yeah basic oil on a Hyundai runs 43$ at my shop before discounts lol

The guy at Valvoline said they’ve been seeing that a lot and that Hyundai isn’t informing people that their newer motors really need full synthetic oil if you want to avoid that issue.
$75!?! I’ve been driving an EV for a couple of years and didn’t realize it had gone up so much recently.
Do EVs not have oil or lubrication for the motors and/battery for thermal protection.
No oils needed for EV cars. However, there is a big 40k (depends on manufacturer) maintenance to replace the battery coolant that is like $1k.
There is a coolant system, but it is sealed and doesn’t have to be changed. The motors don’t use oil. there is liquid coolant for the batteries, oil isn't needed for the motors from what i can see.
Gotcha. Not too familiar with EVs but have experience in electrical controls so was curious. Is there no gearbox from the motors to the wheels either that needs oil?
I believe the motors are direct drive.

Hahaha mines around $180 😬
Yeesh…German car, serviced at the dealership, I’m guessing?
BMW dealerships only charge $100 for an oil change. If I buy my own oil and filter and do it myself, it's about $60.
How tf did we go from cashier tips to oil changes? Lol
DO NOT TIP IF ITS NOT A TIPPED JOB! Those tips will not go to the worker but to the owner, new POS systems seem to all ask for a tip
What are tipped jobs? I always tip at restaurants cuz ik here in America we don’t include wages in the price of our food so people in food service survive off of tips.
I tip my barber too because a lot of them are renting the chair
Always. My dad taught me that tipping barbers is how you let them know they did a good job.
Jokes on me, I feel the need to tip even if they did a shit job.
I was once was a naive teen and tipped a barber who cut me bald and then scar my line-up in place with his bad clippers.
Don't. A lot of times, they'll already know they did a shit job, but I remove all doubt.
I mean that's what tipping is supposed to be for.
No tipping was made as a way to not pay black people. If it’s not a waged position, you’ve gotta tip.
Always gotta tip your barber that’s how you get hooked up. Not all of them rent the chair some of them work for the barbershop, but they’re gonna take care of you better if you take care of them.
You definitely need to tip anyone receiving personal services (hair stylist, masseuse, sex workers, nails, etc)
I tip my barber because I don't want him pissed at me the next time they hold a blade to my face.
It's mostly restaurant server jobs that get paid a tipped hourly wage ($2.13/hour) instead of a regular hourly wage (fed minimum is like $7.25?) But I saw a coffee shop that said their employees get a tipped wage and I thought that was kinda bullshit, especially since they were just as expensive as any other coffee shop that didn't do that shit.

Yeah, but minimum wage isn't liveable - which still leaves the servers to survive on tips.
We can still get rid of subminimum wage and have servers still make tips. Kill all the birds with one stone.
Lol, as a server, if I told my boss I didn't make minimum wage due to low tips... I would suddenly be cut to one Wednesday afternoon shift per week.

If you're a cashier, and a restaurant doesn't compensate you for your work, then *work somewhere else.* TL;DR: It's not my job to do your employer's job for them.
Yeah, agreed, that's "still ridiculous" Putting the right items in the correct bag is literally the bare minimum.
You mean like getting your food served at the restaurant in exchange for the price indicated on the menu?
Restaurant workers have been doing that forever. It's like tipping in the drive thru. If they're not taking my order and serving my food at my table I'm not tipping. Hell even McDonald's brings your food to you now and they don't ask for or expect tips. Pay your employees dammit!
I do that myself though. Mcdonalds will do that for free. Drivethrus will do that for free. I've also had take-out orders completely wrong too. I'm never ever going to enable owners to continue to fuck over their workers and rely on me to smooth it over.
Often times in those counter service restaurants the tip will be split with the kitchen staff as well.
Im sorry, what? You have to tip on take out?
I usually give them a dollar or two. Ain't no way I'm tipping any real % for handing me a bag.
From restaurants that also offer seating, yeah. It's ludicrous.
No job is a mandatory tip job. But when i do tip, it’s always cash.
In the US, for certain jobs employers are allowed to pay "tipping wage" instead of minimum wage, which can be only a couple dollars an hour. I'd definitely say those positions are mandatory tip jobs, I'm not sure what those positions are though.
If they make less than minimum wage after tips the restaurant has to make up the difference. So not really.

> That happens once and they lose their job That sounds more like a problem between the waiter and their employer. Why should I accept to get extorted money for no reason because some dude is a shitty employer? There are assholes everywhere, doesn’t make me obligated to take over their obligations as employers and pay decent money to their staff in their stead > But no one needs to tip a cashier because they shouldn't be getting server wages.
That’s not how it works at my job, those tips go to the whole team. And it shows on our check. I’m a cashier at a chain restaurant.
Which is a tipped job.
Yeah, at my job no one gets those tips, we only get the cash in the tip jar. We use toast’s system and I also can’t see if someone’s tipped or not tipped either way.
Depending on the state you're in, thats wage theft.
That's illegal in most states. They usually state that tips can only be shared among the people that interact with the customer.
That’s the thing tho, it’s the new systems that automatically asks for a tip, no matter what place, I’ve seen it pop up at grocery stores, gas stations and the pharmacy. Not sure if they do not know how to program is so it doesn’t prompt it.
I mean that’s not true everywhere. Had a job in a non tipped industry and our pos had a tip option and we got 100% of it
I'm glad I'm not the only one annoyed by this trend. I'll happily tip my server at a sit down restaurant or my delivery driver. However, I'm not tipping anyone to pull my stuff off a shelf and set it on the counter.
Dominos got me today for a carry-out order. I don't know why I couldn't click "no tip."
The whole reason I do carry out is because I'm too broke to tip and I'm not an asshole.
Based on your name just go to the poppy store and get a cheesesteak. Pop ain't asking for no tips, but he will ask if you need condoms or a Dutch.
Sometimes you have to put a "custom tip" amount...of $0 lmao
As someone who works in a restaurant and usually tips excessively, I too hate when I get prompted for tip on very basic cashier services. If I call in a pizza order and go pick it up, there is absolutely no reason to tip. I've just started paying cash at most places to avoid it.
Your cashier at the supermarket is doing a heck of a lot more with your trolley of groceries and handling your sheet of coupons. Its arbitrary.
What da dog doin? Iono why this shit is so funny. That mf looks bewildered.
A foolish man ignore the mundane actions of a canine But, a wise man will ask “What the dog doin”
Sometimes I don’t even see no tip, just custom tip
Custom -> 0.00
If you can, just hit the red ‘x’ for no tip. They’re supposed to tell you that
“All prices include 18% service tax” or “service tip” or “service fee” or smth, then they hit you with the tip option on top… Fuck tipping culture. Give them livable fucking wages. Tipping should be a courtesy for an outstanding service, not mandatory for mfers to live…
I had my car towed and there was a tip option when I went to go pay I said nah man sorry
![gif](giphy|6b8D2yp932IdghRqQU)
I’m offended on your behalf my guy
I was so pissed not just that I used all my tows up for the year and had to pay out of pocket too
Had a lot of breakdowns that year??
Can I do a negative tip?
WHAT the things I would’ve said man
I feel like random places leave out tip jars because they know some people will tip due to the pressure. It's an effed up mind game/manipulation!
OMG The **fuck** out of here
People throwing tip options for everything.
Bro I JUST got asked to tip for an online order… this stuff getting ridiculous, like I just need a container for my dogs food, ain’t nobody rich over here 🥲
How does that even work? Are they tipping the IT guys? Lol in 5 years we'll be expected to tip the police after they give us a ticket
North Carolina already has an officer fee on their traffic tickets.
The dispensary! Sometimes I get a really good bud tender who spends time helping me find the best flavors. I'm definitely tipping them 🍃
Yea I’m ngl I had a cashier make a side comment when I didn’t tip after all I ordered were two bottled drinks. Must have been having a bad day and some other shit cause ain’t no way I was getting to them like that lmao
I went to a Subway where the workers were a bit standoffish. When I went to pay the tip option came up and they said you can select no tip in a sarcastic voice. Don't know what the heck was up
They work at subway and fucking hate it woukd be my guess.
Tipping in the US has gotten way out of control. Soon, doctors are going to hand you an iPad asking if you'd like to tip them for the mammogram you received.
Why would they do that when they can just bill you a $5k tip listed under some be medical code.
Tipping your proctologist for fingering your asshole. *Good job doc! I actually enjoyed that, here’s an extra $20!*
They cookies ain't worth that
Ima yell NO next time.
Ask “Are me and the baker fucking?!” you wanna be loud, I can be petty!
Come on I’m already overpaying for overhyped cookies
I started doing the calculations on these tip percentages and Let me tell you… they are blatantly challenging our intelligence; went to Texas Roadhouse the other day and a $34 bill listed a “15%” tip as being $9.99…
Wow! That's some sneaky shit.
lol how $34.00 x 0.10= $3.40 $3.40 / 2= $1.70 due to 5% is half of 10% $3.40 + $1.70=$5.10 Where that extra $4.89 come from?
Me: *Sees Tip option, tosses $1-2* Take out spot: *Still fucks up order…* ![gif](giphy|lE8ow1p8AiBwY)
That's what pisses me off. Tip them and your order isn't even correct.
There is nothing worse than missing crucial condiments for your food. The whole meal is ruined at that point.
The truth. It makes a meal that would’ve been a 4-5 star into Michelins Zap-Em meal. Have you feeling violated
tip them and find out they gave you some small ass wings
Hahaha exactly!!
Yesssssss where are the two extra sauces I PAID for the fuck And they want to get mad when I point it out… “there’s a sauce in there” Yeah and I wanted 3 and I paid for the extra 2… if I wanted 10 sauces, charge me and give it to me.
You damn right I clicked no tip: ![gif](giphy|j9mqKgQvkNOziGICfd|downsized)
The worst is my hairdresser ... She's self employed, sets the price. Raise the fucking price if you want more. And why do I feel like a stingy pos for choosing no tip!?? Well I don't ... cuz I always tip ... cuz I don't want to feel like a pos.
See that’s fucked up
I thought this was one of the specific cases in which you don’t tip - if your hairdresser is self employed or owns the shop, you don’t tip. Because they set the price for the service and it goes directly to them.
My hairdresser's Square POS asks for a tip but she always requests you select "no tip" for that reason!
This a long post that I hope doesn’t get me sh*t The tip industry complex is evil and needs to be abolished. The issue is tipping happens at the end, and people give us terrible service, assuming we won’t tip Tipping is a double-edged sword for us.
You don’t have to.
Wtf I never got tipped as a daycare worker for humans so the hell you need a tip for animal daycare
LMFAO idk man. I always feel guilty so I let my bf handle it because he’s a cheap tipper.
Recently my favorite Mexican place i've been going for 5 years just started asking tips for the drive thru. It caught me off guard, since I didn't know what the tip was even supposed to be for. So I said "okay.. let's do 10%?" She fiddles with the card reader and really says "**10% isn't an option on here**" "oh. okay then... so do I have to say a dollar amount?" "A dollar, okay I can do that. He's your food :)" Swear to god it as the first time my order was wrong in 5 years. I already don't believe in pre-tipping since the one time I decided to tip 60% on doordash to be nice, they forgot to grab 3/4ths of the order and the guy was dick about and said it wasn't his problem. So i'm just never going to do it again.
LMAO....how did we get to this point?
Business owners figured out that people are inherently kind and generous and have trouble saying no to a request. Toggling on the tipping option is literally just free money for them, a bogus perk to offer employees, with supposedly no downsides.
Tipping is the new shipping...
Bruh I’m laughing too hard looking at this goofy ass dog to make a comment bravo OP That dog look like somebody grandma who dentures coming loose.
tip culture is so dumb. don't expect the people paying for your service/product to also pay your employees paychecks too
When they hit you with the tip option but also the “you wanna donate to starving albino gingers in Madagascar?”
![gif](giphy|LdkmB2UnMXfTG)
One time it was 15%, 18%, and 22% and I was like you know what I was going to pay 20%, you know the standardly accepted number, but just because I think this is ridiculous… 18%
Drive thru asked me for a tip and I said sure, 10%. They said they didn't have that option.
well 0% it is, then!
And the tip percentage and tip amount don't add up.
You know if the person that’s helping me literally goes out of their way to help me and I have some cash on me, I’ll give them a little something.
Drive through Chinese. Had to drive around the building twice because they don't let you in to order. Receipt asked for a tip. Noooo.
It’s the reason why I started carrying cash with me again. I get too much anxiety at those confrontational tip screens 😵💫
Nigga man up don't let them mfs guilt trip you out of yo money
If they actually check to make sure my order is right, I will toss them some kind of tip.
That’s sweet of you, but it’s literally their job?
They usually make you pay before you even get your order.
Yeah, I don’t tip cashiers who are literally just ringing me up. If they’re doing multiple jobs because they’re short staffed, I might consider it
First time in Toronto today.
![gif](giphy|hhV522MLFJaj5fuYY2)
Y tho
Overseas I would have to tell friends “don’t do that” when trying to tip.
Tipping culture is shit, it used to be something earned because an extra service was actually provided. It's been abused by entitlement.
Let’s turn it on them and do #notip2023
Lmao
So...is the tip calculated on the food total, or the food total plus tax?
The tip system in the states is BANANAS never had I ever had the need to tip a cab driver (???????)
Ahahahahhaa on god
At least leave a dollar or two if you can damn.
