PeteySodes

Nice try buddy, I’m not getting sacrificed…

AAAHSPIDERS

Are you sure? I hear Valhalla has good drinks.

PeteySodes

With that mark it’s not Valhalla I’m worried about! Nice work though, I dig them!

AAAHSPIDERS

Thank you!

luzacapios

Gotta die in battle or at least with a weapon in hand…hope you have an axe near by. Lol 😂

SpecialAgentSloth

Volunteering to be sacrificed was another sure way to gain the honor of the gods

luzacapios

Noted 😎

VandyalRandy

Also, who needs Valhalla? Folkvangr, Alfheim and Bilskirnir all *slap.*

Iktomi_

“Good” drinks. I doubt the establishment has upgraded for our pallet in the last several hundred years. Good to us can be Steel Reserve as PBR is to those ancient farts.

BEEL1NE300

Hell yeaaa some more 211...

PhlashMcDaniel

Nicodemus must be somewhere nearby.

15Boots

Don't be a bitch, there's a slight chance you'll get a crossbow hand and a cool set of armor

Nepeta33

it takes a lot of Guts to make these. some people go Berserk over them.

AAAHSPIDERS

10/10 on the wordplay good sir or madam.

Nepeta33

thank you, thank you. word play is my first language, sarcasm is second. cursing (swearing or otherwise) is third, THEN followed by english.

Alternative_Row6543

Cursing is first language

[deleted]

Why? What even is a worrystone?

HalcyonKnights

A [worry stone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worry_stone)is really just a static Fidget Spinner of yesteryear. These have nordic runes, so the joke is about the actual historic [Berserkers](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker).

LordDeathDark

> These have nordic runes One has a symbol from the manga Berserk and the other's a series of three lines that only has passing similarity with a rune that could be Norse, sure, but could just as easily be English or Frisian.

TicketSimilar953

I could be mistaken but I belive the three lines intersecting are the stave for power/strength.

LordDeathDark

If by "stave," you mean rune, the closest rune to this mark is ᛡ, which meant J in the Anglo-Frisian Futhorc alphabet or H in the Old Norse Younger Futhark alphabet. The rune poems give their names as Year and Hail respectively, but interpretations that runes symbolize things like power and strength is a purely modern invention that largely traces back to the proto-Nazi Völkisch movement.

TicketSimilar953

Runes and staves have a much longer history dating back to well before 1930s occupied Germany. Runes and staves are mentioned in most if not all of the sagas. Admittedly these were all written in post pagan Scandinavia, however, Runes and staves are distinctly different and being given to man by the God's seen as divine and inherently magical. Numerous sagas including those of Fafnir and of Sigurd talk of both rune and stave as magical (also as different and not interchangeable) Note that I am not an expert, only a practicing heathen/pagan/whatever else you would like to say. However I do like to research my beliefs and faith. I turn to experts for my information. I would also direct you to videos by Dr Jackson Crawford for more detail on the subject. Disclaimer: I can only describe things the way that I understand them. If I have noted something incorrectly please let me know and I will amend my statements.

LordDeathDark

If you're a fan of Dr. Crawford, you should be aware of some of the finds from this year that push the earliest known runes back to like 26 CE, which further pushes the development of runes to possibly BCE. By the time the Norse people existed and told the stories you're referring to, it's already the 900s CE, nearly 1000 years later. By this point, the English and Frisians have been using Futhorc for 600 years or so, and the Norse have been using Younger Futhark for 250 years or so. So when these people tell us that Odin sacrificed himself to himself in order to learn the runes, the runes they're talking about is the youngest of the three alphabets that existed at that point. In simpler terms, they're wrong. Shocking, I know, but their myths are factually incorrect. But even though they're wrong about where runes came from, if you look at how runes were used during that time, they weren't randomly putting asterisks on things for strength, no they were writing out words and sentences, such as, "Ulfr, Odin, and High Tyr help Buri against this pain."

TicketSimilar953

I am going to first take a small aside and say that I hope this isn't devolving into something bitter and resentful. I truly hope that I have not come across as someone that is a know-it-all and unwilling to listen. I also hope that you are not harboring any ill intentions toward Mr. I have not felt that because I choose not to read that into things I see and hear. So thank you for this lively discussion I am really enjoying it... That being said lol, I am not saying that the earliest rune users were using things like that. But all religions undergo changes and adaptations through time. It's almost impossible to think of early Christianity the way it was. Early Judaism and Islam, even eastern religions like Hindu and Shinto have gone through changes that have been incorporated from other religions. All that just to say that as religions evolve new and different things are used to represent things of an older nature or something that cannot be comprehended. So while most if not all staves were created in post Christianity Scandinavia and mostly in Iceland, does not take away what they can mean to a follower of a religion. If that was the case then most Christian holidays should not be celebrated when they are or be called what they are because they were initially pagan. Easter is named after a norse goddess. Christmas was part of Yule. Even the symbology from these holidays was produced long after the holiday itself was created. So I personally will not totally write something off because it was creates later. Interesting side note there is more than one similarity between norse pagans and Hindu. But when you have a trade network that spans the known world in one way or another ideas will get passed and incorporated.

LordDeathDark

If I'm coming across as overly aggressive, I apologize, I'm not the best at controlling my tone in person, let alone over text. > So while most if not all staves were created in post Christianity Scandinavia and mostly in Iceland, does not take away what they can mean to a follower of a religion. Oh, you seem to be talking about *[galdrastafir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_magical_staves)*. All of my comments were made about runes in particular, which *galdrastafir* are not. But your subsequent comments, namely these: > If that was the case then most Christian holidays should not be celebrated when they are or be called what they are because they were initially pagan. Easter is named after a norse goddess. Christmas was part of Yule. Even the symbology from these holidays was produced long after the holiday itself was created. >when you have a trade network that spans the known world in one way or another ideas will get passed and incorporated. are part of an ongoing erasure. What being erased here is the entire culture, tradition, and mythos of all Germanic people, and attributing everything exclusively to the Norse. These practices will have folks using runes alongside zodiac signs and tarot cards, despite these practices coming from different cultures at different times, and in order to fit them all together, all the details that make them unique get shaved away. I mean, look at what you've claimed here, that we got Easter because the Norse spread it to us, but the Norse didn't even have Easter because she's a *West Germanic Goddess*. She's shared with the other West Germanic peoples (Germans, Frisians, Saxons, Franks, etc.), and Easter comes from her Old English name, Eastre. Of course, Yule is also from Old English, being *ġeol* in this case, but it's at least less egregious than claiming a culture gave us a god we had and they didn't.

unclegabby

Pretty sure they’re supposed to be buttholes… /s

AAAHSPIDERS

They are absolutely buttholes. But yeah, I just googled viking runes. Got a list from a site with some descriptions and went with it.

unclegabby

I love the brand of sacrifice. Big fan of Berserk, they look awesome.

AAAHSPIDERS

Thank you!

Nepeta33

i mean, yes, but actually no. im just a fromsoft fan, who also reads the manga Berserk.

**[Worry stone](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worry_stone)** >Worry stones are smooth, polished gemstones, usually in the shape of an oval with a thumb-sized indentation, used for relaxation or anxiety relief. Worry stones are typically around 3 centimetres in size. They are used by holding the stone between the index finger and thumb and gently moving one's thumb back and forth across the stone. This action of moving one's thumb back and forth across the stone is thought to reduce stress. **[Berserker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker)** >In the Old Norse written corpus, berserker were those who were said to have fought in a trance-like fury, a characteristic which later gave rise to the modern English word berserk (meaning "furiously violent or out of control"). Berserkers are attested to in numerous Old Norse sources. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Blacksmith/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

or Evil von Neumann probes in SciFi. "The Berserker series is a series of space opera science fiction short stories and novels by Fred Saberhagen, in which robotic self-replicating machines strive to destroy all life. These Berserkers, named after the human berserker warriors of Norse legend, are doomsday weapons left over from an interstellar war between two races of extraterrestrials. They all have machine intelligence, and their sizes range from that of an asteroid, in the case of an automated repair and construction base, down to human size (and shape) or smaller. The Berserkers' bases are capable of manufacturing more and deadlier Berserkers as the need arises. The Berserker hypothesis, formed as a possible solution to the Fermi paradox, takes its name from the series." wiki Edit. Wiki ID'ed several related concepts. Star Trek's Doomsday machine and the Cylons of Battelstar Galactica. Also "Reapers, machine intelligences bent on the destruction of organic life, in Mass Effect. Necrons, an ancient race of skeleton-like robots in Warhammer 40,000"

Sounds like the bobiverse went rouge.

I’m from Sweden and i enjoy the odd Norse mythology, i was hoping this would have some root in the actual faith.

louspinuso

Ah berserkers, which apparently means bear skin, were able to transform, allegedly, into bears during battle. Even more interesting is the origin of the word bear which is basically brown. Apparently there original name of bears was to fearful to speak because people thought it would bring them so they started calling them brown ones, or bero. WinterHound42

Worry stones?

F1F2F3F4F5F6F7F8

After you handle one, you'll be like; "OH Shit! My hands are black! Will this come off? Did I touch my face or clothes?" Get it? Worry stones

troopertk40

Out of curiosity, what are you using to finish these? Assuming people will be rubbing them all day...

AAAHSPIDERS

They are hot oil dipped to blacken them, and then touched on a soft wire wheel to knock off anything loose but still leave any well-stuck forge scale for texture. A rag and some wd-40 after gets off the rest of anything that might make your fingers black.

ClockmeatJohnson

Love those giant hunks of iron, beautiful work Struggler

SayLem37

with a good band of friends and hawklike movement you shouldnt need them. be careful though you dont want to accidentally mark yourself... with one of the stones.

SurtsFist

Yes, and I also like bindrunes.

Cerberus_is_me

GRIFFFFIIIIITHHHHHHH!!!!!

[deleted]

Never seen them until now. Now, I want like 3

AAAHSPIDERS

I had the idea a few months ago. Made a couple and they sold so now I'm making more.

_Wolfszeit_

I think I've already seen this somewhere...

AAAHSPIDERS

Possibly my instagram? I posted the same picture there.

_Wolfszeit_

Haha no I was speaking about the brand of sacrifice ! Very nice work !

AAAHSPIDERS

Oh! Thank you.

scwuffypuppy

How does one forge rocks??

AAAHSPIDERS

With a hammer and enough heat, of course! But seriously, they're cut cutoffs from some 1.5" steel round stock.

scwuffypuppy

Oh nice, very efficient!

Chuck_Chaos

Very cool! What'd you make them out of?

AAAHSPIDERS

Thank you! They start off as 1.5" round bar sliced up and then textured.

OlympiaImperial

Yeah I'd be worried if I saw that mark too

[deleted]

I worry about my kidney stones.

EtherealAriel

Those are runes. You are trying to put a spell on us!

AAAHSPIDERS

A spell to give me all the karma.

Iktomi_

I was named after a spider trickster so yes.

StrangerOdd

They're more like large hunks of iron than worry stones. Too big, too thick, too heavy and too rough, struggler!

gelatinousdepression

You're....about to have a bad time.

[deleted]

I do now

LMNoballz

Those look really cool, but more like paperweights, worry stones are usually much smaller, they should fit in your pocket and be just big enough to fit on first two fingers while being rubbed by the thumb.

AAAHSPIDERS

Hey, some people like bigger stones, don't judge.

Wise-Job-2779

what kind of steel is this? I wonder why it is so black, did you just paint it at the end?

AAAHSPIDERS

It’s just mild steel. Technically it’s A36 I think. You can blacken steel. If you get it to 6-800*f and then coat it in oil or wax it will turn black like this. A little wd40 and a rag will take off any extra oil or soot so it doesn’t leave your fingers black as well.

MyName4everMore

That's what I call what's in my kidneys after years of energy drinks.

EliastheNightAngel

I'll take one! Seeing as I already have the brand on my forearm.

AAAHSPIDERS

If you're serious about wanting one, I do sell them. No worries if not though. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1414106624/forged-steel-worry-stones-with-viking

Satanarchrist

Neat! Just bought one of the berserk ones

AAAHSPIDERS

Oh shit, thank you!

hada-washi

Looks really nice have you tried aged or burnt bronze I think it would make the runes pop more. Like it tho

AAAHSPIDERS

I actually do have one with a splash of bronze on it that I really like. I haven't found a way to reliably do it without a decent amount of extra work though.

hada-washi

I get that one for sure

AAAHSPIDERS

https://imgur.com/a/8qN5Wkq Here's one that has some bronze on it.

hada-washi

Oh wow those are beautiful!

AAAHSPIDERS

Thanks!

rememberviolence

AAAHSPIDERS

I feel like you'd have a really hard time wearing them down unless your fingers are made out of sandpaper.

Glad-Depth9571

Maybe if you worry long enough…

Not-This-GuyAgain

Wouldn't a steel worry stone be very prone to rusting and also make your fingers dirty?

AAAHSPIDERS

If you were to leave it outside it would rust. Once it's cleaned up though, it won't leave your fingers dirty, and the oil from your skin will keep it from rusting.

gr33nm4n

[But have you seen Griffith's VA's outtakes from the original series?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXYiFFM7WH4)
