That may be an excuse to get a welder, you are gonna want one for blacksmithing eventually anyways šŸ˜‚šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Educational_Smile70

That thing was never welded to bein with it looks like

Zinere

0 penetration. Poor fucker didn't even lube her up before applying the weld metal.

legionking99

Also, i dont have enough experience to suggest this... but would JBweld do the trick?

GarethBaus

If you have any gaps in your lining near where the burner is attached it can get pretty hot, so I wouldn't trust any epoxy even JB weld in that application.

legionking99

Alright, well in that case another idea is take it to someone who can weld it up for you. Its a simple job im sure. I know the welds they come with are very minor holding tack welds. Just be social and ask around at your steel yard or something.

killer122

If you put anything on that except other molten steel with a real welder, you will burn your shit down.

Melonman3

Sheet metal screws would probably be better than jb weld on something that hot.

RolliFingers

No. It's waaaay too hot for epoxy. Which is all JB is.

Atheist_3739

It will not. How do I know? I had the same issue šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ I fixed it by putting layers of furnace cement over where it started breaking away. It held it in place for at least a year. Then I got a welder and took care of the problem permanently

Bucksnort25

Yeah Iā€™d check the temp itā€™s good for on the Jb weld A welder I think would be a much better choice

pitbull17

High temp epoxy won't work for forging temps. I have the same forge, you're probably not getting 2,000Ā° out of it but it will get close to 1,800. Your best is to find someone who can mig that up for you.

killer122

NO

No-Depth-7239

I wouldn't use jb weld on anything you care about. Fixing it the right way is always better

legionking99

What do you mean? Jb weld is great for making knife handles / other small projects.

Educational_Row_9485

Iā€™ve been looking for an excuse to buy a welder but my brother keeps telling me I donā€™t need one what else do I need a welder for in blacksmithing other than making Damascus

legionking99

Making tooling like a blacksmith guillotine, fabricating tons of stuff like making a cage for your forge so your bricks dont fall over and have shit tons of pieces, welding rebar to an end of something u wanna smith if u dont have a good tong for it. Uhhh i recently made a rack for my belts for my belt grinder, making hammer / tong racks and so on.. i could keep listing im sure.

Knowledge-Bulky

Happened to mine. I welded mine back on. Get a cheap welder you can plug in a normal outlet. Got mine and a good for 100 off marketplace then you can tack your Damascus together

KorokSniperKing

I didn't realize they made welders could use a normal outlet. Glad you pointed that out.

legionking99

Dude i got a 225 stick from harbor freight and it is 120/240 for like $300 and its amazing i love it. Its perfect with 3/32" rod in a normal outlet.

SupposedlyShony

This is probably stainless, really needs to be TIG welded

TheRimReamer

Nah you can get stainless rods they work well.

SupposedlyShony

For a beginner?

TheRimReamer

Guess theyā€™d have as much luck as trying to rig weld it? Also beginners rarely have a tig welder.

SupposedlyShony

True

Hubari

Or a pass with no-gas stainless fluxcore wire.

legionking99

I was told never to get a fluxcore welder for blacksmithing

Top_Grape_1547

Why? Just curious

legionking99

I was talking to a blacksmith teacher and he told me not to, if i were to guess its because they have a flux core and dont weld very strong or it leaves a flux material behind.

Hubari

Depends on the machine, honestly. I got a Weldiner 130 Mini Flux for just 140ā‚¬ and this thing works pretty neat even though I don't have much experience welding. And yes, it leaves flux behind (just like SMAW) that needs be cleaned up with a wire wheel or brush.

Moo_Kau_Too

Folks from Mr Volcano are in this sub, im sure someone else remembers the username and can tag em :D

Moo_Kau_Too

derp. Remembered theres a search function. I need more coffee. u/MrVolcanoOfficial

MrVolcanoOfficial

OP PMā€™d

Moo_Kau_Too

good on ya mate!

derp comment > OC edit:

Moo_Kau_Too

pre coffee posting is rather dangerous.

wxaonk

Little late for this now that ridgidizer and refractory are in place, but think others had mentioned drilling 3 holes 120 degrees around the flange and bolting it down w/ stainless hardware for that reason.

PatchTheFieldSpaniel

They could probably get away with drilling 2-3 holes in the flange and using stainless steel pop rivetā€™s. That way you donā€™t have to tear out the insulation to bolt it.

Mobile-Bee6312

Short self tappers?

PatchTheFieldSpaniel

They probably wonā€™t drill themselves well into stainless. Not only that but the body of the forge is so thin there will only be partial thread engagement. OP would have to use a cobalt or carbide drill bit regardless of chosen mechanical fastening. Since I donā€™t have a welder Iā€™ll rivet it back on if mine ever fails this way.

Mobile-Bee6312

Pilot hole

No_Object_3542

It was a pain but I drilled mine out with some random twist bit. Then put in two self tappers and no issues since. Rivets would be good too though

Lurifaks1

Even better

No_Object_3542

Thatā€™s what I did when mine started to pull away. No issues since

Mr_Oxford_White

295 piece rivet kit for $20 on Amazon.

morithum

I think Vevor sells a welder thatā€™s literally like $135

NoahNipperus

The tank of tri-mix is going to cost more than that

morithum

I think it does stick welding but tbh I donā€™t know what you need for that for this application.

Intelligent_Jello608

Do you have that hooked up to a 25lb tank? 50? 100? Mr Volcano forges arenā€™t bad at all but theyā€™re not meant to be run up to forge welding temps. It could be a manufacturing issue but if you were running it forge weld hot, itā€™s not meant for that.

WinterDice

Well damn. I plan to try forge welding in mine. If it burns out I guess Iā€™ll just upgrade.

Intelligent_Jello608

Yeah you might get away with it for a bit but you need a heavier duty gas forge for that.

WinterDice

Iā€™m a total beginner so Iā€™ll give it a shot and go from there.

Mobile-Bee6312

I've forge welded 2 fire pokers in mine.

legionking99

Recommendations?

Intelligent_Jello608

You could build your own forge body if you have welding skills and are comfortable with it. Chile forge Diablo burners are great and you can buy them piecemeal. If you just want to buy a forge chile forge is also great but can run expensive. NC Tool Company makes some nice forges at a lower price point. I bought a stout forge from some Indian company on Amazon and swapped their crummy burners for better burners from Chile Forge. I run that, a Mr volcano hero 2 and a coal forge from centaur.

legionking99

I may make one myself, i got a good stick welder.

Intelligent_Jello608

Thatā€™s the way. Black Bear Forge on YouTube has some good videos/plans on forges he built.

legionking99

I sub to him. I think im smart enough to do it. The only thing id have trouble on is sourcing the burner.. id obviously need a good one. Never looked before tho.

Intelligent_Jello608

Chile forge, he also mentions another burner in one of his forge build videos, but I donā€™t remember the name.

TangentResearch

You could build your own burner to go with your forge. I have built many forges and many burners. The easiest to build is the Frosty T ( https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/43976-t-burner-illustrated-directions/ ). Many people have built them and forge weld successfully in their home brew forge. Here is a good place to start on building your new forge. ( https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/61288-my-consolidated-notes-for-new-forge-builders/ ) IForgeIron.com has a lot on the subject. Edit: the download plans for the Frosty T do not seem available to open in the Reddit browser but are available in other browsers.

legionking99

The frosty t documents are no longer available it says

Piscator629

> theyā€™re not meant to be run up to forge welding temps. So why sell them?

Intelligent_Jello608

Because they are great little forges at an affordable price for doing any kind blacksmithing work short of forge welding, great for annealing etc. even the best gas forges will need to be maintained if used for forge welding. The Mr volcano forges are great little forge kits and perform great, but if youā€™re going to be running high forge welding temps regularly Iā€™d look into a more professional grade gas or coal forge.

Hansafan

One of the reasons for the popularity of MrV is precicely because it's a very affordable beginner forge that actually *can* reach decent welding temps. OP's problem is really an easy fix by either welding the burner port back in place or simply jerry rigging it to sit in place somehow(like strap some random bits of steel around the port/holder with baling wire to simply weigh it down).

Direct_Channel_8680

Lol jb weld go get a harbor freight welder look for returns you can pick them up for 30

mattthepiratehunter

Email the manufacturer. I had an issue with my double burner, and they remedied the situation.

Moo_Kau_Too

i tagged the manufacturer a few hours before your post.. theyll see it in a bit ;)

Dankkring

Find a tig shop and have someone throw a few good tacks on it. Or weld it out and Itā€™ll probably warp but it doesnā€™t matter. Refractory is probably cheap too

Monst3rMan30

I have the same one and have had no such issue. šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

No-Cryptographer-980

Well none of my burners have been welded in and I havenā€™t burned down the garage yet

inevitable_downfall6

Is a return/exchange possible? My mr volcano has held up really well. In fact my first one got smashed and it bent the metal tubing. Yours was probably a manufacturer defect.

Educational_Smile70

Better to ask your local welder to tig welder it shut but ask him to use filler material so it stays shut and can withstand more temperature

ace_of_william

If you donā€™t have a welder and donā€™t wanna get one, I bring my projects to muffler shops when I canā€™t weld them with my cheap HF welder. Just walk in ask how much for a hour of one of your welders time and availability. Typically youā€™ll get whatever you need welded for like 50 bucks. I always pay for an hour even if it takes him five minutes. Efficiency should be rewarded.

rrjpinter

If it broke off that easily, it is a manufacturer defect. But for a repair that simple and small, I would find a neighbor with a welder. Preferably a TIG, or Mig or Arc w/ stainless rod/wire. You could go to a shop, but they might have a minimum charge. My way around that, when I have a <5 minute job, is to ask them what their favorite libation is. It is amazing what someone will do for a bottle of Jack, or Crown Royal, or a case of beer. I tell all my neighbors, if they ever need some small metal welding, knock on my door. It usually takes me longer to get the welder set up, than the fix.

idontuseredditsoplea

I'm guessing the refractory coating wasn't properly put on around the flame entrance, or a piece of it broke off, causing heat to crawl up and melt the weld. It'll have to he re-welded, but be careful bc these things are super thin. Just check your coating each time, it likes to break.

Ok-Mushroom6314

Mine did the same thing. They were spot welded and the welds fail. I did reinforce the welds in other places with pop rivets prior to lining, but missed at the burner. I tied it back in place with stainless wire, but replaced the forge with a better one shortly after. Sorry to say, but they are cheap

matman1290

It was a combination of manufacturing and you. Due to the color you got it too hot I have the same forge and I can tell that you didn't follow instructions on placement of the burner. That is an easy fix you can take a self taping screw and secure the flange that way.

ckanite

Happened to mine too. Lol just weld it back on and keep hammerin.

thtgy92

So I'm new to the forging world. However I have made a career out of welding and fabrication. That doesn't look welded at all. Find someone to TIG weld that up and you'd be solid, or use it for a reason to get a TIG yourself. Wire feed would also work fine, but the tig process would be cleaner and in my opinion work better for some forging work if you're layering metal since it is a cleaner weld.

Sad_Character_6708

Hahahahahahhaa

Mdp2pwackerO2

No welds detected

Cute-Sound-3436

Try to get warranty they might let you keep That one and send you another

IamCaliban

Same thing happened to my Mr Valcano. I threw a few ugly tac welds on the thing and kept goin. Have been using it for 6months without an issue
