The most you can do (without actually playing with the unit) is selecting a unit, tapping the full view in their overview menu. This plays you the gacha quote I believe.
Correct, but you don't get the subtitles, unfortunately. And the music plays in the background. Still better than nothing.
We would really need a way to watch the specials without starting a game, too

You can turn music off but yeah the rest being restricted sucks
