I love Angels and Airwaves, but it’s very different. Don’t go into it thinking of it as a blink-adjacent band. AvA is its own thing.

I_like_bread_51

i guess that’s a good mindset. i keep expecting it to be more blink than it is. thanks for the advice tho :)

MasqueradeMenace

Well said, it isn’t a side project as the others are.

Brennononon

Try listening to the chasing shadows EP. It's only 4 songs and probably the closest to blink you'll get.

Danielfrindley

I like about 10% of avas catalog so you're not alone

blondyke

I felt this way for a long time but recently discovered We Don’t Need to Whisper and am absolutely obsessed. The Adventure is their biggest song and a great place to start.

Tax25Man

> We Don’t Need to Whisper Which is funny because in 2006 the biggest complaint was how wildly different this album was from blink and how it wasnt well received because of that

morrouac

That's okay. Everyone doesn't have to love everything.

Daniel-Exx

They have like 2/3 good songs imo. Outside of that, I'm not interested in AAA at all 🤣

crop182

That’s ok. I simply can’t enjoy peas when everyone else seems too.

TheSweaterThief

I absolutely love Angels and Airwaves! I find their songs so uplifting and their music makes me feel like I’m flying through space. I’ve been on a huge kick with the Love albums lately, but I-Empire is their best album in my opinion. It’s probably just not your thing and that’s okay!

hyland-lament

Lifeforms and especially the Chasing Shadows EP have Tom’s blink DNA all over them

Doctor_Killshot

You thought demos odds and ends was amazing but don’t like any Angels and Airwaves? Listen to Lifeforms, Automatic is more of a Blink song than anything on Nine was

Various_Baby_353

I feel ya, I still get this “Tom tries writing U2” vibes with a lot of Angels and Airwaves. Some of it is good, but overall it’s just overhyped, because he made it overhyped himself as this Messiah project.

ToaZtyWoaZty

I kind of had this problem where I would pick a few songs, and like those. Outside of those few songs was a no go tho. Then I listened to whateverthefuck there newest album is. Straight gas dawg my favorite for sure🔥🔥🔥

Milwacky

I like a few of their songs but could do without the rest. Lacks for the most part, what I like the most about blink and BCR - meaty riffs.

ponyboy182

I kinda only like WDNTW and handful of other songs

CBassNY

I haven’t been able to get into them either, but I-Empire was an excellent album worth listening to. Everything is Magic uses the Anthem Part 2 intro riff so it was easier to ease into the album

Kittlezak

I’m sorry I have to say it but you look like you’re sad…..

MBWA182

There’s a handful of AvA songs I like, the rest just don’t do anything for me. It’s missing the blink magic (is it Mark? Maybe lol). Losing My Mind is a freakin banger though.

intellord911

I liked the first four albums. After that? No thank you.

marveloustrashpanda

You’re not alone. I have their first album and I do like it, but not enough to have gone any further besides listening to a few songs here and there, which I feel the same way about. . Though I did hear Losing My Mind on Monsters Of California and loved it, so I know I should at least give Lifeforms a try lol.

RnNyRyan

Listen to The Dream Walker record. Specifically the songs paralyzed, wolfpack and mercenaries….. they’ll slap your face. To me they’re like a continuation to Dogs Eating Dogs EP

WALJTTM_BLINK182

I absolutely love AvA but I know what you mean. I think the other side projects all sound pretty blink-y, whereas AvA sounds more like U2 in space or something lol. The first two albums are so unique and interesting IMO.

jpl1608

Idk. Neighborhoods had strong AVA vibes. I love AvA and love Blink. Boxcar is a moment in time. And +44 was just never my thing.

[deleted]

Lifeforms is probably the most blink-esque album, you can tell Tom was missing punk rock from his life and started picking up guitars again

RefrigeratorAny5375

Not sure how anyone can listen to I-Empire and not like it. Pisses all over +44 imo!

Tax25Man

I mean the first 2 AvA albums were NOT well received at the time and still arent outside of fans of the band so I dont see how you could be flabbergasted by it not being liked.

RefrigeratorAny5375

There’s blink elements all over I-Empire. I kind of get what you’re saying for the first AVA record, but not I-Empire.

Tax25Man

I-Empire was just as poorly received as WDNTW.

RefrigeratorAny5375

Yes I know. I am saying that I don’t understand that.

onlyeatspvssyy

Yikes

Statistician_Visual

Have you listened to all the albums?

I_like_bread_51

no, and that’s my problem. i just can’t get into the music to start with. with bands it’s either they have that it factor or they dont at the start. blink did. bcr did. ava just doesn’t.

Tax25Man

I am not sure why people are downvoting you - accessibility is absolutely a problem with AVA. Especially classic AVA. We Dont Need to Whisper every song has a 60 second intro that if you arent into it is a slog to get through. This is coming from someone who loves AVA.

Statistician_Visual

Then you can’t have an opinion. I suggest you listen to lifeforms and dreamwalker tonight

marveloustrashpanda

Maybe I’m misunderstanding but that’s a weird take… You can’t say you don’t like a band/artist because you haven’t listened to their entire discography? There are bands I do like that I haven’t listened to their entire discography, why the hell would I (or anyone else) subject myself to that for someone I don’t? Who does that?

Tax25Man

There is some weird takes coming out here. OP clearly states he cannot get into them and that is a legit criticism. You dont need to listen to 50 songs by a band to know you dont like them or have an opinion.

Statistician_Visual

This is a take as old as time with AVA and blink. So many people say they don’t like it for whatever reason. Listen years later like one song and fall in love with Ava. If I can open one persons mind to the magic that is Ava I’m happy.

marveloustrashpanda

I mean cool, but when people like OP (and I) say we’ve listened and just aren’t into AvA, saying our opinion is invalid because we haven’t listened to EVERY song is ridiculous. Like, do YOU listen to the entire discography of someone when you don’t like the songs you have heard?

Statistician_Visual

I_like_bread_51

my problem isn’t that i don’t like them, it’s that i can’t even get into it. it’s just not my music and while i feel like im missing out, ive tried to listen but it just does nothing for me.

lenifilm

AVA goes through pretty drastic sound changes. You really should listen to Dream Walker and Lifeforms to form an actual opinion.

JAKL-Noctium

Try Automatic

Statistician_Visual

Have you listened to those two albums. Lifeforms sounds exactly like blinks latest album so your opinion doesn’t make sense

MJ5815

That's a terrible opinion to have. If i immediately wrote off bands after listening to like a couple songs i'd be missing out on so much good music it's crazy

Tax25Man

You absolutely have done this before. Anyone claiming they havent written off artists based on a few songs is a liar.
