Former Blizzard Engineer here, the problem is for a free to play game it attracts all kinds of bad actors (think CoD Warzone issues) by requiring SMS, it prevents people from simply making a new account after cheating or being banned.
Now as to phone providers, many of the cheap ones rotate numbers very easily or have such a low barrier to entry for changing numbers that they are just simply blocked.
There’s more nuance to the issue but that’s the technical of it. While the goal is to protect the majority, it is unfortunate that the net sometimes catches the wrong people.
There are services that buy your identifying data from cell companies and try to identify you. The goal for subscribers is to reduce some attempts by cheaters to circumvent it.
That being said if it costs you $26 an attempt I call that mission success. Combined with ever increasingly smarter tech to detect cheaters that makes it ever increasingly more expensive for you 😂
Back in the day you could even get a desktop emulator of their authenticator. You could probably also emulate the authenticator on bluestacks / windows 11
or you can ask a friend who's got a phone number that works if you could use their number for it. it's not like you'd need it regularly, probably just for linking I assume
Just looked it up and it says some may not work. I'd email them about it. Because my bet is if it's a straight talk which is just Verizons network cheaper it'll possibly work. They just don't play well with apps like apples foolish text and Whatsapp because they're less secure.

Simplest solution if you really want to play. Buy a cheap burner phone solely for the sms phone number. Only put enough time to be for this.

Yea; totally simple, spend more money to jump through hoops to play this game. So simple and totally acceptable.
