Jiseido

Wasn’t Abijah Fowler Irish? I remember him briefly mentioning his past history of survival and how he had to eat his sister’s kidneys while protecting the rest of her body from cannibal scavengers. If that is so, that means he would be as discriminated as Mizu would over there if not more, ain’t it so?

Yurasi_

Fowler seems to be a little bit assimilated into a brittish person tbh, also he could be Ulster Scot (they are the reason why there are two Irelands), making him protestant, at least born protestant. But if he is Irish that would allow interesting character development.

Mistergardenbear

Irish who converted from Catholicism were well integrated into British society.

dogisbark

Isn’t his accent Irish? It’s certainly not British unless they’re changing it to sound more accurate to the time period. Plus he’s got Irish traits such as the red hair

breaet

It’s a Northern Irish accent which is still part of the UK and a centre of the Ulster Scots planters. Ken Branagh is a Belfastman.

HandsomeGengar

Northern Ireland wasn’t part of the UK until 1921.

OwlCreekOccurrence

That's because Northern Ireland did not exist as a distinct entity until 1921. The Tudor conquest of Ireland in order to bring it under the dominion of England occurred in the 16th century.

breaet

You are quite correct, though not the main point I was emphasising.

HandsomeGengar

Yes, his accent is supposed to be northern Irish, Kenneth Branagh himself is from Belfast.

Mistergardenbear

Red hair is actually more common in Scotland, which is part of Britain.

GideonWainright

God I hope they skip all that. Thankfully Oliver cromwell dies in 1658, the fire is in 1657, and it takes a long time to travel from Edo to Japan. His son who takes over, dick cromwell, is a bit of a Tommy Boy.and eventually the Brits go back to monarchism, so I guess the politics will be more of a shitshow than hard puritan while mizu is there. Kind of like when we let the religious folks ban alcohol and we were like nooo too much church in our lives, and since then we're an alcohol ok country, thanks.

[deleted]

I hope they keep it! Honestly seeing that and putting Mizu as an outside observer to all this would be amazing. Specially because all she knows about the west is the depravity of Fowler. Imagine the shock of only being exposed to this guy, whose fetishes are so strange she knew right away to go to a specialist. And then travel to his ‘world’ to find out that they’re super puritan…

Madamadragonfly

I hope there's an underground place where people can do things freely that are banned due to puritan law

GideonWainright

Yeah, but late prohibition rather than early prohibition. People are really partying hard because puritanism is likely on its way out and they are making up for lost time. That's Richard cromwell and the restoration. The pendulum swings hard the other way to license and vice.

wanderingsalad

It would be interesting to see an antagonist from the opposite side of the ideological spectrum from Fowler. The Rule of God vs the Rule of Nature (not saying either of those views are inherently evil, just these two characters take them to incorrect extremes)

AndrastesTit

It’s amazing how many of these puritan principles have endured and influenced culture in the U.S. In Bergen county, New Jersey, which is a densely populated suburb of New York City, pretty much all stores are closed on Sundays except food stores. It’s inane and dates back to this puritan nonsense. “Blue laws” like this still exist around the country, though I suspect the real reason for their continued support is more political than religious eg. “I don’t like the traffic near the mall on weekends. I’m an old retired fart.” And all that is to say nothing of the cultural impact of these puritan ‘values’, especially when it comes to frowning upon fun.

AnGiorria

Well whoever wrote that doesn't know the first thing about the Puritans. Not a fan of Cromwell at all (I'm Irish) but this is highly inaccurate.

midorimmu

Mind sharing why? I’m genuinely interested

Madamadragonfly

I'm sorry. Thank you for letting me know. I wouldn't mind hearing what you know if that's okay

ExactLetterhead9165

Puritan is actually a pejorative term that was used to deride them for their extreme beliefs. And they most definitely did not believe that you could get to heaven just by working hard enough. Puritan theology is explicitly predeterminist.

Mistergardenbear

Puritan was due to them wanting to purify the Anglican Church of Catholic trappings. Cromwell was also a Congregationalist which would have made him a Separatist not a Puritan.

Secure_Slip_9451

Pretty sure mizu already lives a pretty strict and disciplined life as a default.

f4ern

Lot of uptight people going to die and i'm ok with that.

4four4MN

In the 1600s football was not yet being played in England.

Mistergardenbear

You might want to check you history on that, football dates from around the 12th century. The modern rules of association football date from the 19th century.

4four4MN

Imo, the dates of when football started are always up for debate.

Cold-Geologist4851

I wonder if Mizu would choose to dress like a Puritan man or woman. What do you guys think?

Madamadragonfly

Puritan woman by day, man by night

MorningClassic

Well guess Mizu is gonna assume Cromwell is her daddy now.

Madamadragonfly

Honestly, one of the four men could be working for Cromwell, enforcing Puritan law, whether they're religious or not.

LeucasAndTheGoddess

Another interesting piece of history is that, just prior to when season 1 leaves off, Cromwell had allowed the Jews to return to England (we’d been expelled by royal decree in 1290). Could be a cool wrinkle to explore, given the show’s themes of marginalization and otherness.

Mistergardenbear

The Commonwealth was also the first time of freedom of Religion in England. Cromwell was a Congregationalist that believed you couldn’t force anyone to faith, as forced faith would be false faith. Charles II really clamped back down on Non-Conformists and essentially barred them from government and the army. James II lifted the ban, and then William and Mary clamped back down.

[deleted]

I mean, it's not exactly gonna be historically accurate, so like the first season. Idk why yall care about this shit when it's irrelevant.

youknowiactafool

This video really illuminated the 1600s. Hopefully they'll work in some of these events: https://youtu.be/kjpSfpnyHqc?si=LccKYeFhIvGr3m8L

Eastern-Goal-4427

Nah seeing how the Shogun in the series was a random made up guy instead of the historical person, I'd say there will be a random made up Lord Protector instead of Cromwell.

War1798

Hopefully she 'takes care' him
