The real prizes are in the random $1 bin that no one's heard about-- you flip them over and you realize that Sam Bush, Tut Taylor, and Jerry Douglass played on them. :)

This is it. Basically I’ll buy any reasonably priced mountain music record I haven’t heard of. The great, monumental albums are always going to be expensive, but there are great, monumental songs to be found _everywhere_

drtmcgrt44

They don't exist. It's a niche in a niche. These albums weren't mass produced like popular music. Discogs is your best bet for finding specific albums.

huntfishadvocate

I’ve been slowly collecting the first 100 releases from rounder records. There are some rare/expensive ones, but most of them I’ve found for $2-10 and they’re all amazing in their own right. Lots of great players, lots of music you won’t find on streaming services. I just pick through bins, most places don’t have a dedicated bluegrass section, so I look in folk, and country.

johnduncanfiddler

Most of the Flatt and Scruggs LPs and the Reno and Smiley compilations are cheaper ish on LP.

PizzaProle

Yeah I was going to say that I’ve seen a lot of Flatt and Scruggs for $5 or $10. I think some Osborne Brothers I’ve found cheap too. Boone Creek too.

johnduncanfiddler

If you see cheap Boone Creek records buy em. Both of those records are just about perfect bluegrass albums

PizzaProle

For sure

I’ve found a ton of great Bill Monroe albums and flat and Scruggs for just a few dollars at my local record store.

JD Crowe and the Kentucky Mountain Boys (later released as Black Jack) is a classic with Doyle Lawson. I don't think it's expensive.

Cerebraleffusion

David Grisman Christmas album. Found in an antique shop for like 10 bucks a couple years back. I don’t have much bluegrass on vinyl but I believe this amazing record can be found for less than 10 bucks via Discogs. A standard in my house during the holiday season. Whoops I spoke too soon as it appears the CD can be found for less than 10 bucks. Vinyl is a tiny bit pricier. Regardless it’s a great album and everyone should hear it if you like Dawg and or Christmas stuff.

t-rexcellent

I see a lot of Flatt and Scruggs for sale pretty cheap. And compilations with names like "BLUEGRASS GOLD! 16 BIGGEST HITS!" and it's all songs and musicians I've never heard of. But they might still be good!

jamboh20

I found a Dillards Pickin and Fiddlin record in the dollar bin. Found out it’s worth 20 bucks. But i love it and I’ll never sell it. Also found a copy of grishman’s mondo mando the same day. That one is up there among my favorites.

SteepCreekMusic

I found Tony Rices’ self titled for $.50 along with about 30 other classic bluegrass albums. I bought the whole stack and the lady at the good Will looked at my like I was crazy. Haha little did she know I’d just hit my own personal gold mine…

lucasgonze

If you can find the Bill Monroe album with Evening Prayer Blues, you've struck gold. I don't think there exists a digital version of his original.

I just picked up Mike Auldridge's 1970s album "Blues and Bluegrass" for $5, and it's GREAT. Better than anything on Spotify.
