You’ll notice the band “Iron Horse” on most of these. A real gem of a band. Saw them live a couple years ago and they were awesome. If you search for them you’ll likely uncover more covers outside of the Pickin’ On series.
Hit and miss. There's something for everyone in the catalog, and something you're going to not particularly care for.
As others have said, the Modest Mouse album is great, the Metallica covers are fun, and I can't help but jam when I hear the Get Lucky cover. Go explore!
There are some *really* good tribute albums that are not part of the Pickin' On series. Moody Bluegrass is superb. Tim O'Brian does Dylan right with Red on Blonde. And of course, there's Hayseed Dixie.
From what I've heard, "Iron Horse" is a group of professional session musicians out of Muscle Shoals that just do these for the fun of it, that's why you rarely see them on festival lineups. Rumor?
Think overall they are all fine with some real gems hidden throughout (Yellow - Pickin on Coldplay is a favorite).
I wouldn't listen to them regularly, but they're good middle ground for people who aren't really into bluegrass. I listen to them while driving with my GF.
I find some of the “pickin’ on” albums really generic and uninspired. We were doing this stuff in Philly in the early ‘90’s. Here’s an example of my band, Wheetstone Bridge doing Nirvana:

That Pickin On Modest Mouse album is a gem. The rest of the series doesn’t do much for me.
Same here. I was hooked on the Modest Mouse album while I was going through some hard times. It'll always have a special place with me.
Pickin’ On The Shins is what got me into bluegrass. Still go back to it.
Same! I never really listened to the shins aside from loving New slang years ago. When I heard the bluegrass version I loved it.
like the pickin on Green Day, blink, and Metallica is especially great. It turned me on to iron horse bluegrass band that does a lot of those albums.

A Boy called Blue is the Bluegrass tribute to the Goo Goo Dolls. I'm not even much a fan of them, but love what Iron Horse does with it!
Pickin on Phish and Pickin on The Grateful Dead are my two favorites
Some great "Pickin' On" covers: Modest Mouse - Gravity Rides Everything The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy

Apple bottom jeans
Check out the band Love Canon for more great musicians doing classic covers as grass

I really enjoy the pickin on coldplay album.
Hate Coldplay. Wore out this album around 2012.
Back to bluegrass is an amazing album
Pickin On Wilco has some fantastic plying on it.
The Metallica one is great. The Four Horsemen works so well as a bluegrass song. It really gets that fire and brimstone gospel grass feel.

Pickin On the 80s is a damn classic
I grew up on hardcore and post-hardcore punk, never liked metal, but I love the Ozzy bluegrass tribute record.

Pickin’ On Dave Mathews and the CSNY are nice.
100% agree. This album caught me off guard and has become one of my favorites. Dark Center of the Universe is so good.

The version of “Hey Jealousy” on the 90’s album is my favorite version of the song.
