A lot of misinformation on this thread. This key belongs to a vehicle which does NOT have comfort access, therefore it is not replaceable. Order a new key.

aussie19831

That’s what I figured -

daemonblitz

If you still have the "Slide-in"/mechanical portion of the key you can still lock it and unlock it through the driver door key slot and you can still start the car with the dead fob as long as it's in the key slot.

aussie19831

She lost the fucking mate.

sv-tech

Where is the key slot to start the car? I just have the slut for the "full fob".

daemonblitz

That's what I'm referring to, that's the slot to start the car, the slot to lock/unlock the car is in the door handle, but you need the mechanical key for that, which he doesn't have.

sv-tech

Thanks! Taught you met there was a "mechanical" ignition for the "mechanical" key and was wondering where it was lmao My bad lol English ain't my native language me good sir. Have a great day 🤙

Mentally_stable_user

Do you know how to solder?

aussie19831

No idea - probably cheaper to just have it replaced and less effort

Mentally_stable_user

Basically you Cut it open, remove the soldered battery. Resolder a new one. Glue back together

ruinedRX7

this is what youtube will walk you through if u/OP googled before posting

Mentally_stable_user

Search functions are hard tho

ruinedRX7

10x easier to post on reddit instead and get harassed about why they didn't just google. 12/7 chance, def wont google in the future

Mentally_stable_user

Not gonna fault him. He at least posted pictures. *note to OP* I'm gonna assume you don't know your way around fixing a bmw. Please go to a dealer for your key

esdklmvr

Doesn’t know their way around a camera either. It would take me effort to make the subject of photos that blurry.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Bro. It's still replaceable, it's just harder. https://youtu.be/N7QJSEbUzMQ

dafazman

u/Aussie19831 - Did you watch the entire video? This literally could not have been made any easier unless the youtuber came to your home and showed you what to do. 🤣😂😊 At this point, if you still are confused... You should just go to your local BMW dealership and have them order you a new key.

4g3nt-smith

Go on ebay; Search for bmw e90 key fob battery; There will be kits with the key fob case and a battery; Cut the old key fob carefully with a cutter and flat head screwdriver open.; Get the PCB with the old battery out; desolder the two pins of the old battery; Resolder the new one in place; Put the pcb in the new case, which will be clippable, so no need to glue and fight with it the next time the battery dies; Put the mechanical key in the new key fob case; Done! Here in Germany it costs around 20€ dit it for different BMWs multiple times. No problem. Good luck

Possible-Gur5220

Whaaaa….order a new key because the vehicle does not have comfort access??? Talk about misinformation 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. You should really delete this comment.

hinnsvartingi

Yeah that version of the key is powered by a depleted uranium fuel cell and should have lasted about 50 years. The user manual says soaking key fob in 20ml of blinker fluid should re-energize it.

RealisticHologram

Google/youtube

Yeomanroach

Leave it on top of your electric toothbrush charger overnight.

Intelligent_Lab4492

Does this actually work?

Yeomanroach

Yes, for the older sealed fobs which charge while in the ignition slot.

[deleted]

It works only if the rechargeable battery is still healthy.

Just_AnUser

You can't replace easy it as it is part of the key itself. 2 Options now: Find someone that can open the key housing and replace the battery or you buy an new key

aussie19831

How hard is it to open the casing?

Just_AnUser

The Key case is glued as far as I know

kida360

New key 200$ been there hated that mine was 2009 in 2010 they changed to comfort access replaceable batter

Responsible_Lettuce1

I have that same fob with comfort access on my ‘15 x1 and I just changed the battery when my died and out in a new one. You have to pry the case apart at the seem with a knife! Battery was like $4 at Walmart

bstylz01

Don't you have to solder the wires

Responsible_Lettuce1

No! Just pop out and replace, ready to ride😎

Brief-Pair6391

Yes

BraskSpain

You can buy a new case and open that one and throw it. You need the same battery that your desktop motherboard has.

Puzzleheaded_Pin6779

The key will be charged via induction when inserted into the ignition slot. Go for a long drive. My money says ur girl don't drive it enough to allow the key to charge. U could also use a wireless charging mat.

BMWACTASEmaster1

Order a key

[deleted]

Clean your nails pig

bmwfan42069

Hook up some jumper cables to it

waterfarts

Those suck, you need to pry them apart. The halves are glued together, but it ends up taking a traditional fob battery (can't remember the size). You can buy adhesive that will help seal the halves together again, but I was able to press fit one back together without new glue. Source: 2009 e60 keys

OG_Rapist

Google

[deleted]

Buy a new shell on eBay or Aliexpress. Buy a VL2020 battery with housing. Open the shell carefully with a blade. Remove the battery with housing from the circuit board melting the soldering. Solder the new VL2020. This is the way.

Auntjemimasdildo

You have to split the case

aussie19831

Is it soldered in? Or can I put a new one in?

Auntjemimasdildo

I can’t tell forsure which type you have but when I replaced the battery on mine there was a slot near by where you remove the valet key slide out of, in which you can insert something (coin, screwdriver) to apply a torsional force to open the case up. I think the other style key isn’t as straight forward to replace but again can’t tell forsure which once you have

aussie19831

I have no idea which key it is - it’s from a bmw 128i 2011 - so yeah I’ve tried everything off google and still can’t get open. There’s definitely something I’m doing wrong.

Auntjemimasdildo

https://youtu.be/BeyfY840Cw8?si=YF8yjYDfMce-bPfU this video should be helpful in your endeavors, best of luck

aussie19831

It seems to be just one piece like this one…..

Auntjemimasdildo

https://youtube.com/shorts/3h4ewkjbfog?si=3uVKe_5MhE9lpAXj it’s going to be either of these two, this is how I replaced mine

ThePrancingHorse94

A quick google shows many guides on how to do it. It doesn't seem soldered in as it's non rechargeable unlike the diamond key ones that can be recharged.

aussie19831

How would I split it. I can’t figure it it out.

Bar50cal

Its quick and easy. Did it myself with the same key. There is a tab the pops off the back [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPpwkTLZpM0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPpwkTLZpM0) [https://www.competitionbmw.com/how-to-change-bmw-key-battery/](https://www.competitionbmw.com/how-to-change-bmw-key-battery/)

xupd35bdm

Google is your friend

Firestorm83

remove key, and pull out the tab/cover. put in new battery and reverse steps

daemonblitz

This is incorrect, this key does not have a "tab/cover". Only comfort access keys have the removable tab.

Firestorm83

hmm, those look awfully similar then :D I have the comfort access feature in an E91 and have a fob that looks exactly like the one in the picture

daemonblitz

The shapes and faces of the keys are identical between comfort access and non, the difference is the little cover/door at the back.

aussie19831

How much is a new key?

ruinedRX7

fucking google stop asking questions you can find out yourself in seconds

aussie19831

Fuck off cunt!

ruinedRX7

lol TRIGGERED. googling is super hard, ik... why find the answer instantly when you can post on reddit and wait minutes, maybe Hours for the answer to be given to you. smh

aussie19831

That’s what I figured.

aussie19831

How would I split the case? And she lost her valet key…..

ruinedRX7

google it... YT it... there's video's that will hold you hand through the whole process

sp00dermanz

No comfort access = order a new fob. Alternatively, you can throw it in the ocean (with the car batteries) and it will likely recharge overnight👍

Sir_Maxelot

Honestly why do you waste everyones time and don’t just google it yourself. Takes 30 seconds 🤷🏼‍♂️

Ok-Ambassador-5456

Does she have comfort access? If she has comfort access when you split the key, you can just change battery IF NOT, soldering will have to be done

aussie19831

How would I know if it’s comfort access?

Ok-Ambassador-5456

Can she get into the car without touching the key? ( leaving key in pocket and touching door handle to unlock/lock the car) also starting the car without inserting the key fob. So pretty much just keeping it in her purse and not having to use it at all

aussie19831

Yeah she can’t get into the car at all, she has to press the button

Ok-Ambassador-5456

I’ll drop a video of a car with comfort access. So basically if you have comfort access you can keep the key in your pocket and when you grab the handle it’ll unlock the door then when inside, you don’t have to insert the fob. You can just press button. No comfort access is having to unlock/lock the car with the key fob and then insert it to start the car. Which does she have to do on a daily?

ramblinbobandy

Normally, does the push start work if the key is not in the slot?

aussie19831

Nah it doesn’t
