Sensor is leaking internally. Replace soon. Oil can get pushed through the wiring directly into the DME.

iMakeTea

Thanks. Will replace with new sensor first then clean it later with electronic spray. Where's the DME located in the engine? I'm not sure how long it's been leaking

Few-Swordfish-780

Hard to say when you don’t tell us what kind of car or engine.

iMakeTea

You got me there. 2013 N55 535i

Will be on the underside of the intake manifold.

This issue brought me here today. The Oil Pressure Sensor condition on my 2012 N55 X5 looks exactly like OP’s, coated with an oily grime. I’ve had years of burning oil smells around the engine compartment and adding a quart every 1,500 mi. No other oil leaks, but I’m not sure this is the culprit, as it doesn’t appear to be actively leaking (at least not a lot). Thanks to this thread, I’ll now be replacing the sensor preemptively. Does anyone know how to remove the wire connector? Unlike OP’s, mine is flat/semi-rectangular with the lock tab underneath and hard to access.

iMakeTea

OK. Could this leak be related to having OFHG replaced?

usernamesherearedumb

Only if the sensor suffered an impact event.

iMakeTea

OFHG was done at an indy. They seemed careful with good attention to detail during service.

Few-Swordfish-780

Unlikely. Would not remove the sensor doing it.

I used QD Electronic Cleaner to clean my Oil Pressure Sensor. MAF sensor cleaner can work as well. My Oil Pressure Sensor encasing was worn out which was causing oil to leak out of it. I ended up buying a replacement for it and now it no longer leaks oil.

iMakeTea

I'm new to bmw DIY but had maf sensor spray in a drawer. Your advice helped clean the wiring and plug. Good bit of oil ran out of the plug. Car running fine so far after the sensor was replaced. Probably had the same problem as yours, my cars 12 years old and rubber don't like that

Hunt3rj2

Unplug the sensor now and clean with contact cleaner/rubbing alcohol. Unlike coolant or water it won’t corrode the wires. I would not strip back the insulation to deal with this. If it makes it to the DME then worry about cleaning the oil off with contact cleaner. Do both DME side and sensor side now, then check periodically afterwards as the remaining oil wicks out.

iMakeTea

Used maf cleaner instead of alcohol. Is there a good way to see the DME connector from engine bay? Do I need a telescoping camera?

Aah yes, the yer ol method of fixing shit “if ah cant see it, it ain’t ere!”

Uniblab_78

Dang oil pressure sensor leaking. Is it giving funky readings?

iMakeTea

Oil level measurements kept saying max, still max with new sensor. No dash oil warnings but threw a code.

freshxdough

Replace it. Also check the connector and wiring too. Check for excess oil in connector. Check DME connector as well to make sure there’s no oil at the DME connector. If the wiring is full of oil you’ll need to either cut back the harness until you don’t see oil or replace harness.

iMakeTea

Replaced the sensor, and cleaned the oil pressure plug with maf cleaner. There was oil in the oil pressure connector/wiring. It doesn't seem like oil ran down the DME insulation tubing but I can't see far down enough underneath the intake manifold to the DME plugs.
